I'm never surprised to learn how many places don't know US states, since it's a pain to know even for people who live here. I am consistently surprised to learn how few non-US residents actually realize how huge this country is, in terms of actual space/population density.

And how that size affects everything about how ridiculously we operate XD

They practically do, in a lot of ways.

I keep telling ppl it's easier to envision the US like a bizarro version of the EU. States are essentially micro-nations with their own rules, and an overarching set of federal rules that usually (but not always) apply across the board.

And each state can vary wildly on a range of things. There's no universally applicable "american" template, in terms of culture, food, etc.

California's not even universally applicable. The southern, central, and northern sections of the state are nothing alike.

New York's another great example of that. Everyone thinks of NYC with New York, but it's a section of the state. Buffalo, Utica, Ithaca, Geneva, Albany, Amsterdam (still called that), all nothing like NYC.
