If you want to avoid Facebook, the good choices are Valve Index or HP Reverb G2. Getting a Vive is probably the worst choice you could make. It’s a (does math) 5 year old headset

Since you would have to run Oculus Home if you want to use SteamVR with official Link, with Virtual Desktop you skip the requirement of having to run the Oculus Software while using SteamVR

To be fair they send you the replacement before you have to ship it out. So as long as it’s not totally broke you are fine. I did have to RMA both of my controllers as they were launch versions, but the replacements have been flawless

I'm not sure about the first part, but I am 100% certain about the second part. Right as it changes, I put in the new code, wait for the bar to go 1/2 down so VRChat had time to recognize the new pin, then I put in said pin.
