If I make a head with 9 meshes, 14 materials and dynamic bones for every strand of hair the sdk will let me upload it anyways even if it'll butcher everyone's fps to an unusable degree

To be honest, polys can affect preformance, but only when you go to insane lengths (over 100,000). Having a 63,000 poly limit (the one used by the unity engine itself) would be more reasonable tbh.

Also, trying to make an avatar that's over the unity poly limit will give you a second mesh, which will basically pose an issue on its own.

I've got enough experience in building games like Garrysmod, Minecraft, Blockland, or even ol' ROBLOX to build primitive structures. But I'll see what all probuilder does. Appreciate it : D

Baking sounds complex, but I'll give it a shot at googling how to do it. I literally have just been making worlds with terrain, dragging prims that are frozen, and deleting the world when I no longer like what I've done to it.

The best way to handle it is be happy with what you make, whatever that may be. Looking at other people's finished work is a weird one, because sometimes it can be inspiring but can also make you sad you're not at that level.
Set realistic goals that you can meet, then try to go a little over.
