#Black Screen / Game stuck after game end screen

I have this issue and it's a tough one. Black screen happens on nearly every game that I try to exit after the scorecard. Sometimes I can control-alt-del and end task, but it's extremely tough to do because the YR windows wants to stay on top. I found a tip by someone here on discord, that you can select 'always stay on top' in task manager, which definitely helps to get out of the black screen and force the game to close. But it's not a fix, it's just a way to deal with the problem. The problem there is that other players in lobby always see me disconnect when I am early to leave, and my rooms gets closed if I were the host.

About 1/3rd of the time my whole PC gets stuck and I even need to force reboot the computer by holding the power button. It will then not respond to task manager. This is not a small issue...

I play a lot with 'kirmizinokta' and he has the exact same issues as I do.

  • Both modern PC's
  • Nvidia cards
  • Latest drivers and updates
  • Windows 11
  • Tried all render settings

It started happening about 2-3 months ago after a client update, but not sure which one. I got so used to this problem that I simply end task instead of clicking to go back to lobby when seeing the scorecard. Force-closing the game before the black screen occurs, is more or less a workaround but let's be honest, a very bad one.

I really hope this can be investigated. I see many more topics with this issue, so I hope we can find out what goes wrong.

as to some other troubleshooting options:

  1. Have you experiemented with/without borderless windowed mode?

  2. Where did you purchase RA2YR from? Steam, EA, or disc?

  3. Have you tried a full reinstall?

  1. Yes, tried everything. Different game resolutions, borderless windowed, client resolutions, firewall settings in windows, reinstalling game, reinstalling cncnet client
  2. EA app
  3. Yes. Both game, EA app and cncnet. Including several reboots.
#

Also tried it with windows display drivers (deleted all nvidia drivers), same issue.

i see

#

are you running a 2nd screen by any chance?

No just 1 🙂

Attached are some of the old ddraws from before recent updates. Extract it to your game\Resources folder and try the renderers again. If it breaks things, reinstall cncnet again.

Idk that it would help any, but try edit RA2MD.ini in the game folder, add SkipScoreScreen=Yes under [Options]

i'm really wracking my brain here haha

[EJ] is one of our community devs. please try his suggestion!

#

if your network is slow, or you'd rather not reinstall, I'd suggest to make a copy of your game folder, and install the .zip to that copy instead

#

iirc, a legacy renderer (cnc-ddraw i think) will be available in the next update (8.71). @golden zenith is this that same legacy renderer?

I've lost track! More than likely though...

I have a 3gbps fibre connection so reinstalling is a matter of seconds really

#

Ill let you know if the workaround does any good

I tried the fix you suggested, but the issue is still there.

#

I did however notice that it does work 'sometimes'. Which means, sometimes I get back to lobby normally, sometimes I don;t. Where before I tried your fix, it was more or less 100% of the time.

Yes playing right now. First game went fine, no black screen!

#

Let's see how the other games do

craggy bear
#

Black screen again....

yes

#

Well hold on, maybe not. I did update the game yesterday again

#

or cncclient updated

In your game directory, can you rename the Client folder to Client.Old and see if that fixes anything for you, iScarePPL?

#

We've found if you have played a lot of games in the past, the statistics get updated after closing the score screen, and the more games you've played, the slower it will be to return to the client (it will lock up with a black screen).

Hey, that is a good thing to try. Sorry for the late reply, I am not very active on discord. I will give it a go and let you know.

#

You might be on to something here.... the client_previous text file is 40+ MB. Even opening it outside of the client was slow and I have a very fast 2025 PC...

To be continued.

UNfortunately it did not make any difference. The issue still persists.

hey @craggy bear have you tried the latest update? we included a potential fix for your issue

craggy bear
#

I am running yr-8.72.1, is that the latest one?

spare pond

does your issue still occur?

craggy bear
#

Yes 😦

# craggy bear Yes 😦

ok. could you go to \Command and Conquer Red Alert II\Resources, open cnc-ddraw.ini in notepad and check if singlecpu= is true or false?

craggy bear
#

It sais: False

#

I have no other issues whatsoever. Gameplay is extremely fast, unplayable fast even sometimes on this PC.

#

Only black screen at end of games, nothing else. Hope that helps

#

If you have any other things to try, I am happy to help and test where I can.
