probably because of rendering.
the FAQ gerhale suggests you to look into should explain that the ts-ddraw is suitable for the campaign as well as windowed mode on the client, often deemed as a recommendation by others around here.
if you change that on our multiplayer client's settings, it should reflect on the YR campaign, as it alters their .ini file (ra2md.ini)

I tried that already, YR just closes immediately
What seems to work is disabling Win98 compatibility on gamemd.exe, until opening the YR client reverts it back

all it does is launch ra2md.exe or whatever's tied to the EA app, I believe.

You can launch these two files manually from your game directory. This will launch the campaign if the cncnet client is not doing this for you.
