It's not just #volunteer-projects some stupid ass teams post the exact kinds of posts you mentioned on #salary-jobs too

They look for years of experience but have no money to pay, only revshare

# rigid dragon We also don't have the time to moderate all of those posts.

Not too knowledgeable about forms and discord but can't you make certain fields required such as what he suggested below?

It shouldn't require extra moderation to enforce that.

Ask job posters about how they plan on keeping their word about rev share etc. (if any).
How long does a job poster expect your work to last?
Perhaps share something more about the project progress it self.

He's not asking for more moderation. He's asking for more details being required upfront which seems perfectly reasonable and pretty low effort.

rev share is dumb anyways because most projects don't make any money

#

so I don't see the point of that

#

if ppl want this info they can ask themselfs

#volunteer-projects exists partly to keep the kind of posts you see in #volunteer-projects out of the other job board channels. As the others have said, not only don't we have the capacity to manually vet all those postings, we also simply don't have the standing to decide who is legit and who isn't. It's always going to be up to both parties to protect themselves appropriately, legally and otherwise.

Hi there!

I wanted to create a bit of a discussion about unpaid-gigs and express my concerns about it. Currently anyone can just post to the bot "Hey I have a project and am searching help / people for it" which I think is fair. I work my self for free currently on a project and think it's good to have people be able to search for others who want to help or for those who want to find a project. However I find when I'm looking through the channel occasionally that people have the most absurd expectations and requests.

The problem I see with it is that it's often one of these things:

  • People want entire teams of others to help them on their project. We're then talking about asking for programmer, modelers, animators, level designers etc. etc. there's usually no end to it.
  • People offer some kind of revenue share or payments once the game launches and makes money. However with no information about how this will be done whatsoever.
  • There are the most ridiculous expectations for projects, from making entire (MMO)RPGs to years of work including full featured multiplayer games.

The channel description quite literally mentions this is for hobby projects and revenue share projects. But often this isn't the case or has the most big red flags ever for a work environment.

So my question is can there perhaps be thought about some ways to protect people that are interested in these kind of things more? Like I said I'm fine with the option it self but so many of these feel like a really bad place to be. I also understand that it's partially up to people them selves to protect them from this stuff, there's only so much this server can do about it but I'm really hoping there could be done a bit more to protect others.

Some ideas that I had my self are for example:

  • Ask job posters about how they plan on keeping their word about rev share etc. (if any).
  • How long does a job poster expect your work to last?
  • Perhaps share something more about the project progress it self.

Is there a summary?

TL;DR Can we do more to protect people from malicious job posts in #volunteer-projects as I see a lot of them having absurd expectations.

west eagle

No, we can't

Sure we can. I put some ideas in there too. I did mention yes it's not possible to prevent everything, people should be careful them selves too. But there's currently nothing at all forcing people to at least clear up some things like how they plan on managing rev share or similar stuff. There's absolutely some things in my eyes that can be improved.

While we could add some more question fields, in the end it's up to the person who's looking for a gig to protect themselves.

#

We also don't have the time to moderate all of those posts.

If anything, I think #volunteer-projects is oversaturated by absurd vacancies, we took it more as entertainment than looking for something to put spare generosity on.

#

Also success rate for those in general is low even if it's used properly, considering lack of incentive for applicants to move forward past the Q&A

IMO unpaid gigs will always suffer from the flaw that it is... unpaid. People want money for their work, so without being able to hire a good team, the only people you attract are people that dont know their worth, people looking for a hobby project, or absolute beginners, and the only companies you will attract are the ones that are extremely desparate for people or overzealous indies that want a full AAA fighting force for revshare.

I don't feel there is much you can do about this, I agree with eXi here, if you're looking for a project to work on its up to you to avoid the bad actors. A lot of these people dont have plans for revshares cause theyre fellow newbies that dont have a fully formed plan, and honestly those with a fully formed plan are more likely to seek publishers or investment than a channel in a discord server

#

TLDR; absurd expectations will come with the territory of a channel for volunteer services

If you get rid of unpaid gigs, everything you mention will spill over into the other channels. Adding some extra question fields would be a great idea.

we took it more as entertainment than looking for something to put spare generosity on.
A typical user here will look for at least 3 key point in each unpaid-gig, to be able to gage the legitimacy of a post, if even one of those things are found, the post will most likely not be taken seriously. Would be great to have some more questions that would instantly identify some key intentions in the post

This is why I will never work on any charity or royalty projects again. Most of them are shovelware and will soon be vaporware.

#

And the teams are often terrible pieces of shit and wastes of time.
