I watched some videos comparing power efficiency at 60fps cap
ahh I see
3000 series go 200W. Donβt remember exactly which one
4070 goes like 150W right?
is looking at the 4090 cause power and then looks at energy bill
at least we have 120% solar generation in our home
120% solar?
generates 20% more than our house uses in a year
but yeah thanks for the source
Interesting - I'm in the process of selling my solar setup so I can upgrade my hardware... How many watts of panels do you have?
holy shit 4090 draws 666W???
no
i forget i just know we spent like 45,000 usd worth
it CAN
youd need to be burning it out to draw that much
its not like you boot your system and the neighbors lights turn off
riiight yes that makes more sense
yes yes gotcha, thank you
thats it max rated/tested draw
if that thing would constantly draw 666W it would melt
I have an RX 580 π¬
they probably also have something like that
than add 20% to the value and you get an rough idea of how much it draws from the power plug
since your PSU also has some conversion loss
Emphasis on the 60fps cap.
Powerful GPU on a small workload requires a small powerload. It's been years (decade+ ?) since a GPU had to run at 100% to draw a single pixel.
yeah
i think they never had drawn 100% for a single pixel...
no one would have used that
I see, gotcha
It's a bit excessive to use a GPU to draw a single pixel, but for the sake of an example...
my RX 580 apparently draws 220W
so you're telling me that my future 4070 will draw... less than my current one?
yeah, it is, makes sense
Transistors have shrunk probably 10x since the 580. It wasn't a cool card either, but it was cheap.
newer systems can do more work on less power, thats kinda how rigs go
yeah that's why I got it lol
this PC goes 60C + easily
even my CPU is a Ryzen
welp
didn't need an 850W PSU at the end of the day
fair enough
Ryzen 7 1700
my new one will be a Ryzen 9 7900X
I could've listened to your advice and gone with a 13th gen i9 but it was $150 more expensive
wasn't worth it
As long as it doesn't fizzle.
this one has a 750W PSU
it works
sure, I've connected it to a 600W UPS that doesn't work but here we are
I can't afford a new monitor for my new PC ;-;
yeah, I did do that, thank you again
this means I'll be using a generic 1080p 60Hz monitor for the time-being, it won't cause any issues, right?
why should it
I don't know, it could've happened /shrug
The highest I've seen mine go was 470W
it is, tho that's when you really push the GPU with benchmarks or ML stuff
In gaming I haven't see it go above 350W, often sits at around 300W
ahh then I guess it makes sense
ML stuff on my 3060 isn't even able to get it over 75% power usage
how hot does it go?
unless you also had 3D load running, i doubt that it went full power
The highest GPU temp was around 70C
The highest hotspot temp was 74C
huh. that's pretty normal
was expecting that to be higher
Yeah it's running surprisingly cool
And it's completely silent, fans aren't even at 70%
A lot of the times when I'm playing something the fans are barely spinning
lol I have headphones on so I cannot hear the fans of my GPU spinning at all
which means it's prolly silent?
Pretty much all "aftermarket" or even founders edition 4090s have overkill cooling
better than having worse cooling
true
in my experience my water cooler is the loudest thing in my case which is unexpected
π₯Ή
I bought an AIO cooler for my new build but I have no idea how to install it
hoping there's a manual in the box
I look into water cooling allmost every build, but the price usually not really worth it
like i can get a fan, more cores for the $$
altho it did get a bit cheaper
i could connect a cupperwire to my heatsink and run that too my rainpipe
that would actually be pretty ghetto, wonder if i can just remove the fan if i do that
also lightening could totally strike that
mayB not the best idea
also not the worst idea i ever had
hmmmm
I dont care about the energy
I know what do u mean
But I just want to buy something that dont make any problem for me , Even in the biggest projects
Just think about these prices
let me write
3090 (24GB): 720$ or 748$
4060ti (16GB) : 510$
3080ti (12GB) : 600$ - 640$
4070ti (12GB) : 866$ or 750$ ( the 750 isnt available atm )
6900 XT CORE Gaming (16GB) : 530$
and lets think I have the 550$ atm
its will take a while to I get the 200$
for buy 3090 or 4070ti
what I do is will better?
I'm just going through the same decisions - from what I've heard a 16gig card should be minimum, I would have liked a 4070 but it's only got 12gig so I'm leaning towards a 6900XT
650$ will be 4070 for me (I forget to add this one
24gig VRAM would be nice
The problem about that will be the options that dont have like the RTX Cards
RT
I dont care about the power usage
UE's RT works on AMD well enough, but you might want CUDA.
noise and heat will be the problem
maybe I have to buy the iChill 3090 4x
its have 4 fan
TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XT OC Edition 20GB : 1020$
TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition 24GB : 1216
hmmm
4080 is near 1150 - 1200$
but I cant get these
bcs they are too much expensive
If we not going to care about the power usage & we going to list the best gpus which I was talk about for the UE5
what u guys will be put in top
What is the list
3090
4070ti
6900xt
4070
3080ti
3070ti
4060ti (16GB)
???
4090 on top, 3090TI, 3090, ....
the 4070ti Is really beat the 3090 in the game fps
no one cares about fps when they buy an 24GB card for UE
So the vram is very important inside the unreal?
depends
If you're working with landscape.
So please explain
large worlds need 24GB or more of VRAM to build the HLODs too
large worlds , Can u explain how much large will be need the 24GB Vram?
and how much the 12GB will handle
Some examples would be nice.
depends on the meshes, textures, etc. which you use
If you're creating a large level with WorldPartition (that is a UE system that breaks up the world into smaller, streamable parts), one of the optimizations needed is to build low-poly meshes of objects in the distance (other WP tiles) - that takes all the meshes in your tile and creates a mesh from those with a shared material - if you have a lot of meshes in that tile (which more often that not you do) it takes HUGE amounts of VRAM and CPU RAM to build them as it loads them all into memory to process them.
and on the features that you use, and how much your game benefits from them... e.g. virtual texture streaming
i'm not even sure if it has any benefits in the actual editor?!
so the dlss 3 is not important
well
According to my summary of your words
I Have to buy the 3090
Right?
to do what ever I want
can you define "large"? atm I could only afford a 12GB GPU so I want to know what problems I'll face
I will be dealing with all kinds and sizes of levels in my job
ack that makes sense, so let's say I am making a densely packed city district
with tons of buildings and roads
and maybe even crowds
yeah that checks out
I can't do that now so ig I'll get to it when I get to it
there is not any dlss plugin ( not the dlss 3 ) right?
if it will be there can use it with the 3090 too
Yes
Yes thats true
also about the cuda cores or memory bandwidth & memory bus width
what is your own gpu ?
OP XD
So 3090 will be the better for me?
Idk too ,
Lmao
I just dont know which one
4070ti or 3090
I think 3090 is better
cus of the more vrm
vram*
π€
Listen
both of the 4070ti & 3090 have the same price here
3090 a little cheaper
than 4070ti
but thats not much
also Idc about the power consumption
So which one atm
If you did go 12GB - there are people who offer to build your project on their hardware for a small price - that's if you did run out of VRAM.
Agreed i rather even spend the money on noctua fans instead of the water cooling
water cooling is meh
water cooling is meh??
Depends on your use case really
i've never been big into over clocking etc
usually though the temperature difference isn't that amazing
if you have good quality thermal paste and good airflow
yeah idc about overclocking either
I see
welp I already bought an AIO so there's nothing I can do
plus what's the harm
Ryzens seem to run very hot anyway
ive also outgrown the intrest of having RGB
yes yes I figured, it was rhetorical haha
I just want flat and minimalistic but that's too difficult to find
so I'm stuck with RGB
not eye-watering amount
but like a little bit
im waiting for windows 11 rgb integration
I'll check it out, thanks
oh yeah that reminds me, I'll need to make a boot drive for the new build
πππ
Comparing RTX 3090 with RTX 4070 Ti: technical specs, games and benchmarks.
Why 3080ti better than 3090
Comparing RTX 3090 with RTX 3080 Ti: technical specs, games and benchmarks.
why nobody test the UE Editor with the gpus
and pudget at least uses the same base system for the cards
instead of mixing up conclussions from different systems
ππ
dam - now I want a 4090
yea i'm surprised that it managed to almost double outperform the 3090 π
The trouble with getting such a powerful card is when you get to the optimization part of your development - this is what concerns me the most - can you underclock something like the 4090 to give you more of a bottleneck?
its tested the 4.26
you can powerlimit and underclock the card to a certain degree
but imho the best is to have some card/system around for testing
Yeah, I think you're right - I've kept my 1080ti and intend to keep the 3070ti as well for exactly that reason.
also good to have a replacement at home...
now it's not that bad anymore, but when i bought a gpu in the crysis... i wasn't really intending to do it again if the card has to go to RMA
what about going for a lower end one now then when the 5000 series comes out and the 4000 drops in price, grab one then?
I was think about that to
thats a good Idea
but cant wait for 5000 series come XD
it take long time
yes
I just late at seen ur msg
That's a good point - the power consumption/heat was another concern but that sounds like a good solution.
I have to say, nVidia is a prime example of why I dislike marketing!
INNO3D GeForce RTX 3090 iCHILL X4 for 748$
or
INNO3D GeForce RTX 3090 iCHILL X3 for 718$
30$ will worth for 1 small fan ?
make sure it fits in your case
Yes
I checked it too
its 13.5 - 30
My case can get up to 34
nice - plenty of room.
aunty google seems to think that they're very loud
Yes
I just found that cheap In my area
also the 3x model of that brnad
3 fan & 4 fan
let me check the vid of it on yt
about the repair yes
it will be hard maybe
but why that brand have to make an weak small cooler
like just for be a little special?
also the sound of the cooler
if its going to be more loud without helping the gpu temp
its bad
yes
I think the 4nd fan is just for making it beauty
bcs its rgb
ππππ
bling
Probably because it is
without creating a boot drive? how?
That sounds like the voice of experience! π
Good to know!
It's not a big deal
Use msi afterburner to tune the fans to run slower
And change the temp that causes fans to start doing their job to 70f+ so they're not running at 30-69f
I uninstalled afterburner when I saw some people mention it may be causing the GPU crashes I was getting (it didn't) and never installed it again
It can cause it to crash if you try to overclock gpu too much
The fans on my card are pretty loud, but I live in the country so I turn the volume up π
yes - the ti's overclock the VRAM too so I spent way to many hours trying to tweak that too - in the end I just reduced the amount of grass in my world and it stopped...
Wdym reduced the amount of grass
the GPU crashes seem to only happen when there are too many ISMs/HISMs being rendered - it's like the card bottlenecks out and times out
I had quite dense grass foliage in my game so I thinned it out and tweaked all the culling
Speak english man idk what a ism or hism is
oh - sorry! mesh instances
Hold on
each grass mesh is an instance
Why
Is a mesh the same as a noise map
I dont really use unity for game development, I just have a fetish for making beautiful scenes with 3D models and ue5s lighting system
So I dont understand these 3D game dev stuff you're saying
a mesh is the same thing as a 3d model - both terms mean the same thing
the term mesh is pretty much used just by developers so I can understand that
So, couldn't you use a noise map for the grass and have dense foliage like you want with even better performance?
Less strain on gpu?
you still need to render it on something and that something is a mesh, even if it's a just a flat plane to render the grass texture on
yeah that's actually something I've recently added to my grass system, with grass variations depending on the noise in the map
Render it on the worlds mesh
worlds mesh?
It doesn't necessarily reduce the strain in itself.
Whyd you delete I was enjoying that and learning
I mean yeah if you want a grass ground "texture" that's perfectly fine and pretty much everyone already does that, if you just have grass "cards" it's not gonna look that great
(I just joined the convo, haven't read it from the start)
typo, I butchered the message π₯²
I'm familiar with a little bit of game dev stuff, I watch sebation log or whatever his last name is on YouTube. Pretty entertaining
Oh yeah he is great
even if all his stuff is Unity the knowledge is still applicable in game dev in general
I dont like unity
welp you ain't alone with that one π
Never played a game from unity that wasnt optimized
Except ubisoft games, yet again the only games I played from them was ac4, brotherhood and syndicate. Liberation
Before the great copy paste saga of the modern ac games
Can I see the grass
ππ
there's a comparison slider I used a snapshot of my game level in on this page: https://recourse.nz/index.php/rdmeshtools/
Current Version: 1.20 (28th June 2023) rdMeshTools is an Unreal Engine plugin tool that resides in the Static Mesh Editors toolbar and in the Content Browsers Context Menu. This tool gives you the ability to quickly and easily change any static meshes scale, rotation and pivot point. Finally here is a tool that allows you [β¦]
Better grass than what's in my front yard
Mostly gravel for cars to easily get the hill. Living in the mountains is fun
I've got 6 1/2 acres of grass - I mow most of it with a ride-on which is bit dodgy considering how steep some of it is π
I may be southern but I still have no idea what the hell an acre is
I never cared about farming until it came in the form of a video game, although I lived on a farm and took care of the same animals for 10 years that I did in the game.
Nothing like being 13 years old, going to play outside in the same field as 5 month old calfs thatd lick your face for the sweat salt
that's just over 2.5 hectares. I grew up on a small farm as well - I spent a lot of my time in the trees building huts and forts. Yeah we had calves too. I don't have any animals here except my dog - but all my neighbors animals seem to love me and keep coming around and following me - chickens, ducks, geese, cows and pigs all over the place.
That's how my aunts used to be, and my cousins husbands dads place used to be. The animals are very very playful once they get used to you. They're amazing creatures
agreed
The fuck is a hectares
10,000 square metre
an acre is 43,560 square foot
we currently have 10
at my place
What kinda hardware do you use to mow that
like 2/3 is open horse pasture, but we mow with a simple cub cadet
I dont understand this joke with the cpu
Is this something only sound engineers would understand?
Yeah I've got a cub cadet too - awesome little machines!
Is that some kind of fancy riding mower
Ah yes the holy grail mower in lawn mower simulator, what a beauty
I have 4 hours in that game, and they're all from mowing one lawn. Very realistic.
do the virtual memory matters or the physical only matters
Total virtual memory: 29.78 GB RAM wasnt it 8 for a normal pgu? or its psychical + gpu + swap space thingy?
RAM:
GPU
(granted this is a laptop)
also is there a reason the new ram i added is rated at 3200MHz yet TM says its only doing 2400MHz?
thats 25% lower than rated
and if im rebuilding my media desktop is there any reason NOT to use the same motherboard as the powerful desktop? its a really good deal but didnt know if it might be better to find something cheaper
or reason to get more than 16gb ram for a computer whose sole life is to download things, play videos, and research things while the main computer is doing the heavy lifting?
I have a 450w power supply, 4tb drive with everything i like already on it, and a mid tower full ATX case. am i missing anything?
can't i just go to other pc and put my hhd and ssd and expect everything to work fine?
kinda, you'll have to figure out the drivers and stuff
GPU?
it's rated 3200MHz, you'll need to use XMP or something
it doesnt need one? its powering a 720p monitor or a newer 1080p tv
its ENTIRE REASON TO LIVE is to play movies, music and surf google when im gaming
or watch my youtube stream chat
it will however spend 20+ days in a row without shutting down downloading anything i need
why does it have 16GB of RAM and a $150 dollar mobo then lol
tbh idk what other MB to use, atm im seeing if the existing case can support ful atx
check if your CPU has integrated graphics
got it
the i-5 does
the current system is DDR3 old
with a single core $45 AMD cpu from 2016
and the current setup has 12gb ram
the entire rig was a barebones kit from tigerdirect worth like $400
is this mini or micro atx? https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-F2A68HM-H-rev-10
i cant tell but its whats in the desktop atm
Thing looks ancient
Is that a PCI slot?
Wdym
The motherboard has a PCI card slot.
Yes
the GPU slot lol
They all have those slots
PCI-E slots, yes, these days.
Not PCI slots.
At least it doesn't have an ISA slot!
Poke one of the crystal oscillators
Just a gentle poke
it was part of a cheap af barebones kit
like $400
in 2016
maybe it was 2015
its ancient
It's not that bad realistically
I do miss windows 7
its win 10
Purple place was fun
upgraded
but it needs to be physically upgraded
cause it has issues when playing music and working more than one chrome tab
The slots are literally different physically. Even if it supports PCI, the cards won't fit.
Look at the picture.
PCI and PCIe not the same
The spacer is in a different spot.
its also DDR3
lmaoooo whattt
It's easy being a engineer
even for 2015 that's insane
Also, if cpu only has 1 core, why upgrade to windows 10
free and i didnt buy windows for the original so i had the unactivated version
you can buy one of the cpu's in this computer for under $25 atm
and its a dual core
This new APU form AMD continues to revolutionize the microprocessor market. It is part of the first APU family to deliver H.S.A. (Heterogeneous Systems Architecture which defines how the CPU cores interact with the GPU cores. This APU also is Mantle capable, improving it's console-like optimizati...
so yeah still a single core
"2 logic proccessors"
still curious what motherboard atx type it is
Seems like a 2008 cpu
idk when everything is from just that i got it in 2015/16 as a birthday present
my first "custom" desktop
really a kit you saved cash on by building it yourself
like ikea
I wouldnt mind a ddr4 system
i uhhh... force the cpu into the slot backwards...
With a 1660 super and ryzen 5 5800x3D
Why
How
The triangle on the socket and the cpu brother
Cmon man
cause i was dumb, strong, and it somehow didnt actually perm damage it
Even 2002 cpus had that
my science teacher helped me diagnos it and was absolutely flabbergasted i got it in there
spent like 10 minutes with a toothpick fixing the pins
I wish I had science teachers like that
and miracle of all it works and has worked since
Most my teachers were enthusiastic at what they teached
my AP science teacher was a qualified vet from india, with 2 PHD's in chemistry and physics and doing night college to become a financial anylyst, and is currently an insanely successful one
My teachers were just in it for the money
i was also like the only one who could understand his accent and we got along great even if i drove him mad when id get 95's on open book tests without ever opening the book
i was the reason he could never curve grades
Ah yes I did that once
but my english papers and math scores sucked so bad i nearly flunked out of highschool
while #1 in my class in science
and history
8th grade science when I was in a alt school. I didnt get to take science or history classes that entire year but still had to take EoGs for them
I scored the highest on the science eog out of all 4 8th grade classes without taking the class at all.
yeah i had to cheat on my math final to graduate highschool because i sucked so bad at written non calculator math
I got caught cheating on a math test before
My math teacher was also my football coach
Who was also my moms pastor
but i plan to replace the guts of the old computer with a new MB, CPU, and ram
Does the case have decent air flow
i wanna keep the PSU, HD, and Case
it does
as long as your not shoving graphics cards in it
it doesnt need them
its ENTIRE REASON TO LIVE is to google stuff for games im playing, watch my youtube stream chat, and play movies it downloads
What's gonna help keep other components cool then
Does it have a compact disk driver?
I might get a case that has a disk bay, and a floppy disk bay
More or less support for it and buy the bays
its got 2 dvd-rw bays
one for old games (2010 and older) that require the disk in there and the other to play the dvd's i have
I can rip movies off disks as long as I dont hand out the file.
I have the rights to the movie as long as I have a physical copy
Would be nice to have a system that's just a better DVD player that works with a projector for in home movie streaming
hah
Without having to worry about untrained children getting into the display case and breaking the cds
tbh im gonna make the upgrade to a lower end i5 and 16gb ram
I5 doesnt mean anything without the other number next too it
12th gen
probably the 600?
enough to stay relevant another 9 years
the bios date is 12/2/2014
Why do tech tubers keep saying wait to buy pc parts
They've more or less been saying it since 2016-2017
"the newest gen is better"
"Wait because the new gen is around the corner"
At this point people who listen to them will never buy a pc
like yeah i know the 13th gen intel is the best, but why should i spend near twice as much for like a 17% increase in power i wont be using 90% of the time
Tiktok tech dudes π
All you need to do to make it look like you know what you're talking about is buy a bunch if empty pc component boxes and display them behind you as you record
unless im really really building a project, i cant imagine using the entirety of the computer's CPU
Start working with shaders
You are getting the i5 126000k right
for the media desktop yeah
You will see all the core/threads on 100% quickly :D
the i7 12700k for the battlestation
Battlestation?
big rig with all the frills
the media desktop just sits there for entire months without shutting down
downloading stuff at night and playing it during the day
it has no other design
Are you building a battleship
You know
and its gonna fight for its life
I'm tempted to just get a 64GB 6000mhz ram kit myself
I saw some benchmarks for some games I play on playing at 1440p
And my word the ram usage is crazy
18gb of ram used in hogwarts legacy
15 in warzone
Tarkov is irrelevant, itll use all your ram no matter how much you have
i mean its not bad given even budget gaming LAPTOPS have 16gb ram almost by default
in fact its hard to find work station budget laptops with 8
The last time I bought a laptop I also got a ram upgrade and storage upgrade along with it
i upgraded this one to 24gb last week
It had a m.2 slot available, but it didn't have the screw to screw it down so I used eletrical tape to hold it down
it could use a bigger SSD but im saving the 1gb one to transfer my old gaming laptop data to the new desktop then ill wipe it and transfer the laptop SSD onto it (assuming they are form compatible as i havent checked yet)
tb
Hawky boy, you ever thought about playing around with micro robotics
Like arduino or pi
oh yes
we had them in hs as part of ap physics
me and my henchman built one with a touchscreen and a sim card reader and prank called the school
hes a henchman because hes one of those mid functioning autistics (im high functioning)
he will never be independent, but he can follow orders very well
like "distract the teacher while i call the phone in the room and get him to answer"
I cant get the arduino ide to install
its been like 6 years for me
The precompiled version in the zip file also doesnt work
App refuses to launch
I need new pc
i graduated in 17 and havent touched them really since
The damn 7700x keeps going in and out of stock, only thing left is those overpriced mobo + 7700x bundles
Should I settle for r5 7600 and skip 7700, just save for r9 7950x?
Save for a 7950, end up buying an 8800
Yeah I'll buy a processor that isn't even out yet
Let me just shoot off into space near the speed of light in a vacuum for 10 minutes so when I come back 10 minutes later on my return itll be 2078, so I can buy a ryzen 19 19950x 128 core 256 thread cpu for 700 bucks and run ue20
It's just gonna be a ++++++++ refresh of i9 14900k
Cant forget the RtX 120800 ti
126k cuda cores, 7million threads, 8k mhz
New display cable type, hologram port
Augmented reality port
speaking of RTX, it seems more and more likely we are getting a lot more VRAM with the RTX 50xxx cards, the rumor is that the 5090 is getting 48GB
and according to the memory bus size that looks very likely
For the low low price of 7000.99usd?
welp I hope it won't be even more expensive lol
564mm in length, prepare to buy 6 anti sag braces and a new case
I think tech is outpacing requirements somewhat at that point.
Unless it's Star Citizen.
4090 is a card that's more often the choice for ML rather than for gaming or other game related uses
So 48GB would be perfect for it
5000 series are just productivity gpus
4090 is basically a "professional" card disguised as a gaming card
Games cant catch up to gpus
Pathtracing and raytracing says hi π
For example in Cyberpunk, it's a combo between rasterization + pathracing for lighting
Man
I just want a x3D cpu
R7 or 69 7000series one
8-16 cores, perfect for ue5, 3D cache perfect for gaming.
I'm lazy, I dont wanna flash bios. I want it to work out of the box
Maybe if I wait for a board that works r7 7800x3d right out the box I'd be happy
Or ryzen 9 7900x3d
Either one and I'm happily never upgrading cpu again until I spill coffee on it or radiator defects and bursts all over my system
x3D CPUs aren't good for productivity I've heard
only good for gaming and they tend to overheat a lot
Should I overclock my gpu just for fun
and costly for a toy
and unlike the computer i cant put them down as a biz expense
The 3D part is for my gaming needs, the rest of the cpu is for productivity. 8 cores is entry level for ue5 innit
Not like I'm doing anything crazy, until I put my big boy pants on and learn c++/c# instead of procrastinating it
They're like 12-30usd
Even the sensor kits are like 30-60usd
for the base board
Hold on fam
you realise i have turned one into a working phone right?
and kinda hard to fun something simpler than that
You can do more without a screen
hawk likes his screens
Thrust vector control, robotic arm, rc car controlled by infrared or bluetooth remote, drones, solar panel charging station with solar tracking.
worst case i pull the screen from my action camera
oh im aware. i actually managed to get banned from using the school ones after i managed to trick our schools RFID tracker into thinking the students where multiplied
everyone wore and used RFID badges for everything in our school and they could keep track for the most part of where you were
What the fuck kind of school is that
We really will do anything except make better gun control laws
i just found the main unit and used the board to send it false RFID data that made it replay the last 2 hours data
my teacher was impressed, the dean and the school security was not
They should've been
You found a very simple yet effective flaw in their stupid security attempt
i mean you had to know a LOT about the security features, and well i managed to get my hands on the user manual
and built a blocker so i could move around and hide if i needed to and the teachers would think i was simply elsewhere
when i graduated i gave it to my protΓ©gΓ© and i hear its kinda a tradition now that when a student graduates its handed to the top of the class science kid
i also know 3 others were made and it caused another scandel
i got called up by the dean and yelled at for 20 minutes
then there was the time we built a baseball ballista
the uhhh... goal was to make something launch a baseball at least 25 feet
What kind of badge tracking device was this
Thats incredibly simple
Few bearings, precision kinematic equations, when to release the satchel at the most optimal vector for the perfect launch
well the Ballista... it was made of 2x4's and used 4 foot diameter pipe gaskets as the launch mechanism
10 pound weight gets dropped by arduino
oh everyone else made a trebuchet, we made a ballista
we knew
On that scale just use a 50 pound weight
we managed to not only overshoot the football field but to punch a hole in the chain link fence around the tennis courts
the gasket allowed something like 600 pounds of tension
used a come-along to wrentch it back
I might build a trebuchet now
one of these:
Shoots lil glass marbles
i still have the ballista
Maybe 6 by 12 inches in size
think bigger
A lil model one
Noooo
Well yeah maybe
1 foot by a foot and a half seems appropriate
A foot is 12 inches I think
tbh my wife is afraid of it cause she saw when the first gasket snapped it cleaved a 2x6 clean through in half a second
oh it is
but please home intruder let me crank and load it ill put a 20 pound ball of lead where your head is
i also made a wodden crossbow that actually worked for when my school went to the local renn faire as part of a historical english class
it didnt look like it worked cause they knew i was one of those that would make it work
i miss those days
i kinda peaked in HS cause cash is a lot harder to come by these days
lol
big farmboi who splits time between building log cabins and playing fallout
Swinging a club and walking sounds more like 5000bc activities
Anyways
Other than a desktop I'm gonna need a laptop
i cant gamedev beyond godot with it but i like my elitebook
it is
For 2d game development
its replaced unity 100% for me
my main beef with unity is how it charges for teams
like ffs
i like unreals model of "we dont care what you do until you make a million dollars"
My main beef is that I've never played a game made with unity that wasnt well optimized
Because epic are way better devs than ubisoft
godot is like "heres tools go have fun"
i remember when it wasnt paid
game maker back when you had free and 1 time premium
i made so many crap games with GM3
Game maker is like 89 bucks now
And theres several versions that support different things
Vr, 3D and 2D
id prefer godot 3d over gm 3d
The only problem I have with godot is not remembering how to connect node signals together
Other than that I really appreciate the animation tree system
Very simple to learn how to use and setup
I never used ue5 to game dev, it's on my list to use once I learn c#
i really should get back into godot
So should I, my projects been sitting on a flashdrive for 3 months now
I just need sounds and more sprites, and I'm not a sound engineer nor artist.
tbh me myself am not a coder, im more a manager/writer/marketer
i can come up with ideas, and sell anything i get my hands on, but code and my brain just dont get along
Coding ez
Getting the syntax right and being able to spell correctly is the hard part
not for me, i have trouble with simply learning any other language
I might check itch.io for new sounds and asset packs
See if I cant get a small completed project
I've never completed a project
Might make a game like jump king, getting over it, and only up. Its quick and easy
Only need a jumping mechanic, gravity, collisions. π«‘
Add some procedurally generated segments based on what difficulty you pick or something
I have 1.5 completed
1 is "finished" and the other was finished but source fill corrupted
That's 1 more finished compared to me
Theres my small mini rpg game project, my demonic chicken demon game project, my discord.py bot, and that's pretty much it.
My mobile game project got annihilated by my daughter, along with my first gen discord.py bot
Xbox 1 uses ddr3 ram while ps4 uses ddr5 lol
Ps5 has 8GB of ddr6 ram dedicated as vram while having another 8GB ddr6 for cpu
HOW
she made a better game and bot
The files were on my laptop, which she brutally attacked when cocomelon went off for an adbreak
Yes they were on an m.2, afraid it wasnt salvageable
I still have the apk for the last updated version I compiled, but i dont think i can reverse engineer it
Same goes for my discord bot, I spent a year on it.
Acer aspire has a really fragile thin frame.
Never noticed it get hot when gaming or using ue5 other things
lol
Brutally attacked = enthusiastically jumping up and down and screaming/giggling
sadly my kid got my autism and ADHD, and extra lucky her mom makes 6 figures
i mean it caused a LOT of problems socially for me, and its doing the same for her
Future genius material
so when she breaks things her mom pretty much replaces them
I dont have autism, I dont think. I asked my mom about my diagnostics and she stays quiet when I mention autism.
she has a STACK of $80 android 12 tablets for her to watch tv and stuff on and slowly replaces them as they get food and water spilled, dropped in sinks, tossed at walls in frsutration
like 20
moms a major league company lawyer
makes more in a day than i make in a year
not really but close
We should move to dms or something
I dont feel comfortable keeping this up in a channel with strict rules on the topic
you two should get a hotel room together xD
I dont like being yelled at
still have no clue what size board this is
If you switch to the specification window it tells you. Took me a hot second, but it's at the top where it says overview. Absolutely A star website design.
Anyway, it's micro ATX :)
is this compatible? like size wise: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZQ416QM?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1
Intel LGA 1700 Socket: Supports 13th/12th Gen Intel Core Series Processors DDR5 Compatible: Dual Channel Non-ECC Unbuffered DDR5, 2 DIMMs Sturdy Power Design: 6+1+1 Hybrid Digital VRM Design Connectivity: PCI 4.0, Single NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2, USB 3.2 Gen1 Fast Networking: Realtek 1GbE LAN Dynamic...
this is the planned CPU: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09FX4D72T/ref=ewc_pr_img_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
and i wont need a mid range CPU cooler for it will i?
espeically if its got good airflow and wont really be used for anything but chrome and VLC
current planned parts list:
pretty sure the CPU fan is overkill
yeah i mean its gonna have to last probably another 8 years
the current one has lasted that long
yeah as stated, its entire reason to survive is VLC and chrome
it does need to also survive being on for literal months at a time
current CPU clock is like 40 days
and that was cause a power outage
longest time without shutting down was 83 days 17 hours
the 12400 has Igpu right?
theres literally a $10 difference between the 2
at that rate imma stick with the 600 and just be happy it can be used for low power rig testing for my games
in a reasonably controled manner, since i know everything thats in the rig its easier to see what the bottleneck is vs someone randoms computer where simply storing the desktop differently will cause issues
Im also assuming the noctua u125 is overkill cooling?
hehehe
"With great power comes... big arse heatsinks"
those come without any power either :))
Ok which one im tired of changing mind (Ryzen 9 7900x/7950x)
I typed 7 instead of 9 on accident in the search ππ
I keep changing because they keep saying item is no longer available from seller and glitching out sorta
Yes
Between the two ryzen ones
8, 12, or 16 cores
Well they all fit
Two are the same
Except ones 12 cores and ones 16 cores
Ryzen 9 7900 and 7950
I mean the numbers are the same
One has a 50
Nvm.
Yes but what I mean the same in this context is they're both ryzen 9s
The differences being irrelevant atm
I know this
I lost focus on what I was trying to say
So 7950x is out π
X3D cpus were crossed out once I learned I needed to flash bios
I feel like I've seen all the benchmarks for 7700x paired with 6750 xt
Yes, I'm going with the 7900x
It's easier to upgrade a gou than unscrewing cpu cooler, cleaning off paste, installing new cpu and reapplying paste, and installing cooler again
Also makes a lot more sense for game development
That too, but I was more scared about having to flash bios for it
Never ever done that before
Built pcs before so it's much easier and comfortable
The am4 board I picked out when I was considering the 5800x3d had flashback
Made sure of that
But nah too scary
I prefer gpu upgrading over cpu upgrading, gpu just slides right out.
I have everything picked out except for a monitor
1440p 240hz ips 24-27 inch panel. They're all so widely priced. Mbr isnt needed, and I do not care for curved monitors
This ones 1080p, but it's really nice. @iron zenith I can still play games at 1440p if monitor is only 1080p right?
Scratch the 1440p I forgot the cpu wasnt a 7600 or 5600. So using a higher resolution doesnt matter
Yes
5600x/7600x cant use the 6750 to its fullest at 1080p, so I was gonna reduce cpu usage and increase gou usage by using 1440p
I misspoke about the cpu usage
It will stay the same but the gpu will be used more
Wtf are the missing 12 games this system supposedly cant play π
you can't play minecraft that game is too hard to run
crysis
True true
somehow every single version of skyrim
arent there like 12?
Yes
Wouldnt mind one more, just everything it is now but remastered, cities a lot (like a fuckton or 2) bigger and diverse.
sounds like more work than simpkly adding a fishing pole
whats a good way aside from flash drives to transfer data back and forth between 2 computers? they are like 2 feet from each other, one however is simply better setup for long term storage
i feel like thats something i could accidentally break
isnt there some usb cable i can plug into both and transfer the data directly drive to drive?
just use a network cable?!
pretty much ALL modern NICs have builtin crossover capability
my problem is unless its like foolproof im 90% sure im gonna fck it up
does no one remember my whole "installed a cpu upsidedown"
and only one side has to support it actually
so you have twice the chance that it will work
I mean you're just plugging a cable into 2 computers. If you can't do that then you wouldnt be able to do it with a drive anyway :P
this an ethernet cable?
wouldnt i need a splitter too? since uh my desktops are all hard wired in?
...how?
because autism and autism strength
i can chuck 40 pound haybales 12 feet up into a hay loft, forcing a cpu into the wrong configuration by accident is kinda easy
Now I'm imagining someone using a clamp to crush a CPU into the socket.
no just size 15 ring finger
i have hands big enough to palm a basket ball
tbh it was a (now) $25 usd cpu
into like a $50 MB
ok so its a $200 mb
wtf
how?
thats more than the vastly more capable newer mb i have
Condition or attrition perhaps
jaws of life for cpu instillation
You don't really have to force them in, they just drop into place. If they don't sit flat, you did it the wrong way around.
does no one remember my whole "installed a cpu upsidedown"
CPU with pins up: oh no
nono, the triangles on opposite sides
Ah rotation, that's not quite as hardware gore as I was picturing
still bent the shit out of the pins and nearly gave my science teacher a heart attack
Did you break off any pins and leave them in the slot?
Or, by chance, rip off the entire slot from the motherboard?
Best to shave off the pins and use them for sprinkles.
no
that computer is living
and currently playing movies for me atm
its single core isnt really good for anything else
One question that any recommended CPU for UE5 workstation as a programmer? Don't need to be the super fancy one but most cost performance wise. All right, I just want to know is threadripper a reasonable price?
Just the cpu for a TR will be the price of a top of the line gaming system.
Is your work worth in excess of 300 USD hourly?
And the motherboard and ram will be twice the price of a regular gaming system's version. If not more.
Absolutely not, lol
Ok, I checked the price, that was really crazy.
If you want a TR system, you're looking at $5-6k
I've never experienced how fast it is. I just wonder like try at least once to see it worth paying. Now I feel it is too much
The only time you even notice it is when you're compiling the editor... or shaders.
Maybe lighting.
Yeah
That was the heaviest ones
All right. How about AMD's 7000 series with X3D? Anyone tried them?
X3D is a bit of a waste for dev.
Really? I saw they have more cache
Ah, ok. They removed cores instead, that was a waste.
X3D doesn't lose cores, but it loses clock speed to the 3d cache. The extra cache doesn't seem to help for heavy workloads. I guess the default cache is fast enough to keep up when the rest of the CPU is already overflowing with math.
I would look into 7950x or wait for next gen ryzen CPU if you don't need a new one right now, supposed to be a large jump
7950x is more than enough even for professional use
Hmmm, it will be in one month I think. Probably can't wait for the next one. How much is 7950x now?
should be like 550-600$
not including the MB
Thanks. I'll take a look.
Lived longer than the chromebook my mother gave me 1 year and 3 months ago
@mighty cosmos does UE5 utilize cuda cores?
I'm pretty nervous about switching to a 3060, just for the cuda cores.
Epic W
Ignore the search bar I was testing something on amazon
What do cuda cores even do
People say it helps with video editing, recording/streaming. But doesnt most recording softwares have things that also handle that
So it's just a generic thing every gpu has, just different names for copyright reasons
I see, I see.
I'm just trying to cut down my pcs price to get it quicker since laptop died yesterday
Happened so suddenly
Laura do you happen to know about cooling cpus
It's the one part I know extremely little about
do you lads think it's a good idea to build my PC in a cardboard box? or just exposed? it'll only be for a day because the cabinet will arrive tomorrow
(I'm desperate)
i wouldn't use cardboard, neither would i let it run long exposed
you pretty much have 0 airflow over passive cooled components like that
not to mention that it puts stress on pci ex connectors if you plug in a card, etc...
Exposed like a test bench system is actually perfectly fine. The rooms air pressure and air flow work the same
@hardy marten if you do run it exposed like a test bench system until case arrives. Just be careful with gpu, nowhere to actually hold it down aside from pcie slot
Good way to check if your system works and posts anyways
I've decided not to do that tbh
don't want to wreck the only hardware I have
Understandable
anything I need/should/would like to do before or after building a new PC?
didn't do this in a few years now
so I kinda forgot
I want to take the system drive from my current PC to use as a secondary drive in my new one
I'd also like to keep this one bootable in case something happens to that one
noted, I shall do all that
I do have a boot drive prepped
how do I install without a boot drive?
I feel very dumb right now
I made a drive using the second option from this
yeah I'm looking at it rn
more proof my old desktop needs upgrade:
running a dvd then opening chrome lowers the frame rate of the movie in vlc
do remember desktop is single core
its "technically" a dual core but its old amd so one of the cores is used for the gpu
this is the cpu
task manager literally says "2 logic processors"
1 socket
1 core
its from 2014
and it was a cheap POS even then
i mean it is a 3.9ghz
but it still has issues when running more than 2 programs, even without vlc
the 12th gen i3 is like what? 8 years more advanced?
and 5 times the price
my computer before it had an original pentium silver
like from way the hell ago
the laptop it was in was ancient in 2012 when i got it
256mb ram and 32gb ide
it was part of a barebones kit i got for a present in 2015
everything in it was old DDR3
2013-14 era stuff
also im glad i bought that MB for my new rig when i did because its nearly doubled in price recently
i got mine for $157 it now sells on amazon for $299
im also assuming cases come it pretty specific sizes? cause the mini atx mb is in what seems to be a mid tower full atx case. aside from the legs, its external size is the same as my new case (which is confirmed a mid tower with full atx)
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-F2A68HM-H-rev-10
whats currently in there
says micro
its tiny as fck though, and theres a larger set of hardpoints for MB screws in the actual case which is like 17x18x6 inches
mainly i wanna keep my PSU, drive, case, and dvd player,
the current problem is the cpu sucks, the ram is meh and id like support for modern early level GPUs the desktop does serve as a backup if my main rig fails, or its busy doing something + it never shuts down except during thunder storms and when im gonna be gone more than a week
my home wifi sucks beyond belief (think 90's DSL)
so it spends most of its time just downloading crap
yeah
and amazon has like a 15% of both if you buy an arc750 and intel i5 together
