I setup a little guide for my team, seemed to work fine:
I need to (re) learn how to setup perforce. I've been out of the game industry for too long so I'm always using git

we use UGS, which is a nice interface for perforce and hooks into Unreal quite nicely
Is there any notable difference? Is perforce a standard in gamedev?
Git is not great for large binary assets
perforce is especially nice for unreal since .uassets are binary files and can't be merged.
i've used git with UE4 before though

our publisher doesn't have access to our perforce directly

One nice thing I've noticed, too, is just how many more jobs are remote-friendly these days vs. a few years ago. It was always frustrating to see companies which could be totally remote but insisted against it.
Yeah. Granted, there are some nice perks to working in an office. But it's really hard to beat rolling out of bed and walking to my desk.

Yeah, even if commute is relatively short (40-50 minutes), it's still exhausting on daily basis. That time you could've been spending on getting some rest and work more effectively later

Anyone here used Houdini for game jam?
I have a question about packaging game using Houdini for Unreal Engine 4.
We packaged our game for game jam but some Houdini generated assets were missing from built game. We found out after we published and that made me really sad.
I generated assets with Houdini and Baked it. Someone else packaged it. It looked fine in Editor, but when we built some assets were missing...

We used Houdini with Houdini Engine v2. We have set the Houdini Engine plugin to Editor-only and baked the results to static mesh actors. Are the baked meshes present in the world outlier? Did your baked static meshes get marked as "Editor only" by any chance? Once you bake the results it should behave as any other static mesh...

Oh we also had a weird bug when baking houdini assets on different maps due to name conflicts. Baking one map deleted assets from other maps. We fixed it by using a separate baking folder for each map
somehow houdini engine defaulted to the same name
or you could put appropriate unique names in unreal_output_name attribute
Right. I baked all into one folder. Maybe I should have baked separate. But in our case we did not have problem with that.
But programmer said we should not use underscored for naming coz he has some issues with levels.

It's VR-only (both quest and PCVR), but we plan to upload a full playthrough once we rest a bit.
We made procedural platforms, keyboard buttons and this sci-fi-wire-pattern-thingy in Houdini. Just started learning Houdini a couple of days before the jam, it was super fun.
Managed to finish it right now for the first time :D
Initially, it was really hard and after tweaking balance on the last level I was too tired to play somewhat alright
almost got screwed because of the windows logo on one of the keys, apparently that is illegal lol
I dont have VR ๐ฆ . But I wish I had it.
But video looks nice! Looks fun pressing those buttons, haha.
thanks! yeah, buttons are super fun, I wish we had more control over the haptics, but we tried to mimic the force response curve of an actual mechanical keyboard

OMG, i had exactly the same, i couldn't fall asleep last night - I kept replaying the level again and again in my mind
kept finding bugs in my head, kept bumping into bad collisions
my wife wanted to beat me up because i didn't let her sleep haha

We had an issue where the Vive trigger and grip didn't work at all in the final packaged build, but worked fine in editor. Was fine for oculus though.

We didn't have the time to fix it for our submission. I read some stuff about that online about people changing it to something else and then back again working, but I didn't really test it. Because the game still works fine for Oculus, we're not panicking about it too much.

Got 1248 views, and almost no downloads. Probably because there's another similar sounding good game that people are actually looking for.

What if you try starting the second monitor while in the game settings, then switching the resolution real quick?
Also is the 2nd monitor a tv? And if so, are you plugged into the hdmi arc?
- i had no issues for the past 3 weeks ๐
- I only had this issue after this game was run
- I plug the HDMI cable into the back of the computer, this mouse lag happens
almost unsuable
- I remove the cable, no lag
- yes the second monitor is a TV
- I have no way to control the TV, they have a janky remote for the hotel that turns the shit on and off, no settings can be changed
I have checked refresh rates so that they match
I tried to reduce my settings on the PC to 1920x1080 to accomidate the offset, computer freezes and dies
installed new drivers, removed old drivers, did it again, tried studio drivers, no change to any of these
people were saying turn off shadow mouse, and do this and do that... tried them all, non work from 2012 ๐
some guy said disable chrome dark mode
i dont have chrome installed
so...
i have a few ideas... i am going to run this screen to a monitor (take one from the hotel lounge)
see if the issue replicates
if that doesnt work ill try to force the display to the TV/monitor you know FN + F7
ill even try to install the older drivers, god knows it could be a windows update that was forced on em

i thought maybe one of the power supplies blew

that game did something wiht the Display adapters (I think it forced the TV/Laptop) to a UI that isnt supported

In 4.26 there was turbojpeg.dll though, I wonder if OpenImageDenoise is doing the same job

Super glad to hear that. This was my first GameJam ever that I participated with. My day job was bringing other people's dream to reality and I had to do it for the past 10 years as a game programmer.

Major concern was the RNG feel of how things ended up
i get that was part of the purpose, but it didnt feel like I had any real control of the outcome

Our game (Human Isolation) is 17th in popularity on the list and has 35 downloads. And 3-4 of those are probably the team members downloading it as well.
Ah, cool, we're at like place 70 with 16 downloads. Guess it's as ambershee said, most games can count downloads with one hand.
I've got games there with around 5-10 downloads long term that have been in previous jams
And even my winning game after all the extra exposure only has 45 downloads total in two years

It really sounds like a rough time! I tried to play like half of all vr submissions and I can't even imagine streaming that, especially since you have to try different headsets most of the time and getting stuff to work is sometimes tricky

so checking analytics - our third place winning game from last year is sitting on 336 downloads to date, 72 of which were in the first week, 35 in the second
our game this year (different team) is sat on 40
my 2018 game that wasn't amazing has 108 downloads, and my 2017 solo entry has just 22 (ouch ๐ )
I would actually suggest the quality of the artwork on your game page is probably the biggest indicator of number of downloads
We are sitting with 32 downloads so far (in space no one can hear you click).
Our previous VR game (deconcretizator), a submission to a noname jam with 3 submissions, got 240 downloads in a month. We made a juicy video that got 1.6k upvotes on r/virtualreality, which brought us about 200 page views and put us at the top of several itch categories for a couple of days (vr, parkour, 3d platformer).
Surprisingly, we got most of our page visits from itch, not reddit (about 1k views total rn). Did not expect itch discoverability to work so well.
I think itch claims credit for any arrival that it cannot determine the origin of (e.g. through Discord)

I'm thinking on it since I have some ideas for expanding it but I'm not sure if it's too much deviation from the standard. No words for a typing game and sick controls for a platformer. Its taken me the whole day to figure this out. It's not perfect but its close to what i want. Will see what animations will work nice for it but the next part is calculating the jump distance.
Think this same system might actually work for the high jump event as well. Still a lot of testing before I implement it into the game. Still need to go...

@shrewd vapor I played it but gave up quickly, slashing only on some cubes is kinda no fun. the slice effect was cool though. everything worked no bugs or something like that. I used Quest 2
Thanks for the feedback! Do you know why it didn't feel fun to you? Did it not feel like you were really slashing the cubes to pieces? Or not enough motivation to slash them? Or just not a slashy type of person?
for me it was fun until things got completely out of control. I think most fun for me in your game was the initial feeling of power when you slice the first poor couple of slimes to pieces. But when the corridors were 100% slime (for me it was after like the second powerup), I stood no chance at all ๐
So I'd say maybe turn it down a bit and add more mechanics/fighting styles to empower the player?
Like chopping down one slime took more time than for other slimes to grow and fill that space
but maybe I need to git gud
Awesome feedback! Thank you! There was so many slimes to really help feed into the "Running out of Space" theme, but for the full release I think you're right in that we should reduce the amount of slimes that spawn and how big they can ultimately get.
We do plan on adding more weapon variety too! Such as a war hammer like weapon that can hit the slimes back and make them 'splat'.
We also hop to add some other mechanics just as spell casting into the mix to help mix up the fighting style like you said ๐

even though both of us are very new to game development, I really think we did a lot of things right, especially since we ended up with a *working* *VR* game for both PCVR and Oculus Quest. Having an academic background really helped.
Here are our keys to success:
- Release a small finished game beforehand. You do not want to experience the full stack of building a game for the first time during a serious jam like Epic MegaJam. Nailing basic stuff beforehand allows you to experiment with the fun stuff!
- Study the winners, the judging system and the unwritten rules of the game.
- Prepare a good template and have a shipping build ready before the jam.
- If you canโt turn the idea into the complete vision for the game, start doing something, and let the game write itself.
- If you are developing several different mechanics, separate minimal testing levels will improve your iteration speed. Having a level for stress testing is also crucial when developing for mobile VR.
- Organizers know their stuff. Package early, package often. We had a shipping build ready before the jam, packaged multiple times a day every day, and had no problems with packaging.
- Stay organized. Have a plan laid out as early as possible and put a large buffer in. Adjust daily and even more frequently near the deadline. Use version control, name your builds. Have team members with low-spec PCs? Set up a shared DDC and forget about compiling shaders ever again.
- No pressure - no fun!

maybe if houdini had a runtime engine hint hint
who gave the robots a gun

works pretty well to make procedural platform tools for platformers for example
but yeah a runtime engine would be amazing

But some of the people we tested on have actually never played gorilla tag or anything like that (and almost no vr) and completed it from like 2nd or 3rd try

one thing i learn from megajam they dont really care how much asset you used you just neeed a great concept and great game play

yeah, thats what the double trigger press teleport recall is for as mentioned in the comments, i didnt hit it much in testing
but thats testing bias for ya
the slimes were a bit too much haha, I was running out of space a little too quickly
needs balancing, but it was fun

My personal thoughts are that the art is a little weak, the balance is off and that is just isn't quite fun enough. I'm pretty proud of it overall but i'd love to hear some thoughts of you lovely talented people.
talking about VR games, I also really liked the shooting style in Gravitas and the bird game (skylight) has a super neat style
and the noir game was soo pretty too

I suspect they put pretty much all of the clips together and just played them in a random order

Thanks for the jam everyone! We had a blast creating BotiBoi and learned a lot along the way. The updated version of our VR game is live too! Much better graphics on quest, better sound, fixed bugs, added saves, etc. Also the Quest version is hopefully coming soon to SideQuest and AppLab.

Is anyone interested in learning unreal together and building an XR application? I know little about unreal and came from learning unity over a couple of years (non professionally) I can 3d model and texture and would be happy to contribute to a project in that way while learning unreal blueprints!
