@tight osprey .. victor would be right person to ask about that (He is on Epic games community team)
@solid abyss where can I get hold of him? In the forums?
VictorLerp#1337
he is here ... you can @ him directly .. if you want
he will respond when he can ..
@solid abyss Thank you very much!
np .. but I also suggest that you give Blender a look as well (since it is totally free) .. and now a major contender
download Blender 2.81 beta
I have dealth with both in past (Houdini and Blender) but for what I need - Im more familiar with Houdini
@tight osprey it was only before jam started
Looking for an audio designer and level/environment designer for the gamejam!
Obligatory donβt forget to take a breather outside. Healthy just as productive π
I've already done two prototypes but still no good idea ...
Two prototypes? I'm working π¦ Best I can do right now is a notepad and a ton of one liners for ideas... π
I usually read the rudimentary mechanics to see if they are funny or not
i could run my audio files from cloudstorage to save some data but not goin for 100mb
heh, streaming audio in from the web, now there's an idea....
can get a valid endpoint for UE4 media player on firestore
video files too
dunno if putting 6gig 4k pictures there for compositing is a good idea tho
grabbing 4k textures for materials might be possible but never tried
i made a rig π
its a space cat
should prolly finish it up fast so i can set up a physics asset, that usually takes a while
downloaded a 3d character, it's kinda messed up, will probably take 2 hours to clean, should I maybe model it from scratch? π€
looking for an artist for game jam , pm me
Do people who do voice acting and nothing else count as team members?
i.e. do i have to list them as part of my team for the entry
imo, list everything you didn't do, if a guy volunteers to do some voice samples, list those voice samples
Yea that was the plan if they don't have to count as team members
also I'd say it depends on the character and what you need it for re: the message you sent, sorry for distracting w/ another question π
imo, if it's just a few lines and the guy is okay not getting any prizes and you are already 5, just list them
I'm doing it by myself and have a couple spots where voice acting would be nice, but isn't completely required, and i was mostly just curious i suppose
Also- if the character is already rigged/UV'd, I'd say it's probably more worth it to fix the model than do it from scratch
unless you're comfy w/ 3D tools enough to make your own things
that's still a lot more time to make it from scratch if those things aren't done tho
@eternal edge nice looking megascans there
As a general rule of thumb, anything you or your team didnt do specifically during the jam is better to list and then how you used them. The judges are fair and will take it into consideration, but better to be over cautious then to be disqualified for not listing it
Still at work trying to power through so i can get home and start working on the jam. Been just doodling concepts in meetings π
I'm home in 20 mins, then it's time to get started π
I'm just not super happy with the ideas I have, but they will have to do
@zenith gust haha nice! i have 4 hours then this is me all weekend
Thanks twi7ch
i was definitely going to be crediting him regardless, as with any premade things i use, just didn't know if it would be an issue if they weren't listed as a team member
one of the winners had friends do voice acting iirc
gotcha
@stable kiln kill it, kill it with fire
wil take another 10 hour B4 i get to texturing
Looks great for a horror theme though π
modern take on space invaders
I totally see it now, nice!
How are you all feeling? π
Struggling to come up with something today, but hoping I can make a start later this afternoon π
Just getting started on some prototying over here, try to nail down the basic mechanics
or at least get a very small vertical slice done tonight in terms of mechanics
can't find a game idea -__-
@copper patrol me neither
welcome to non-creative people club lol
dont forget !gameidea is always an option π
Try not to overthink it
Yeah keep it down to earth
I want to make this game and show it to a women i like that work with me XD
Well waking up as a Solo Dev for this Jam, instead of a Team that I originaly planned
Now that steam networking is working, it's time to move on to programming the different issues that pop up in this game
Pretty basic one just to get it started
Work In Progress Pre-Alpha Footage made by Imagine-Games, LLC (Reinaldo Vieira) #RuleTheWorldGame #ImagineGamesOrlando #UE4
no real gameplay yet, but i think this guy is so adorable i cant stop playing
I have no idea where to start in terms of animation/rigging, does anyone have any good places to start? I seem to remember making very basic animations in UE4 with a rigged character at one point, is that possible?
Am I doing something wrong?
Did you use it before the jam?
yeah, it doesn't work here either
I didn't hurry activating it as it used to activate during the jam before and there was no note it would expire during the jam
I do have huge audio library tho
Maybe they got their weeks messed up? It was fine like two weeks ago
wonder if they used the original schedule
as jam was initially going to start week earlier
@tranquil matrix you know anything about this?
I activated the code about 12 days before the jam and it lasted for 10 days, so ran out just before the jam started.
lol
(for soundly code not working anymore)
sounds like they did not get the memo that the date changed
guys is there a way to draw pixels in game, i mean i have this game idea where the player collect colors then draw on screen
You can use render targets to paint on
@marble marlin @small fern I'll follow up
I was able to activate the code in Soundly like 18 hours ago
Hmmm is the WorldGridMaterial allowed? ^^
Nope, that's the one you have to replace
hey in this Jam the soundly promo code does not work
there was a discussion about this above
they screwed it up last year as well.
yea without resolution..
so i had an idea, but now i'm thinking it has too big of a scope
are you doing this solo
yeah
I see, I'm stuck doing things solo, my team fell apart
I'm solo as well
@mental walrus @sonic echo what do you do ? (programming / design / sound...?)
I try to do all
@brazen badge Designer, and Programmer (blueprints), some 3D modeling to
with my team, we'd need someone to do a few character meshes, we're thinking of a low poly / cartoon style because it's for a casual / party game. We are 4 programmers. You can ask me if you have questions about the game etc
well I'm a decent 3D modeler, but can't say if I am good to make solid character meshes. Plus part of me is thinking of going with an Idea I have that I feel is very important to develop
I'm Autistic (Asperger Syndrome) and I felt I should create a game that give players an experance of what it's like to be autistic and show why we have issues with socailizing.
great idea man, actually I'd love to try your game ! Do you think you can send me the link when it's done ?
I try to, issue right now is trying fiuguring things out on to make the game. wonder of of using assets or not
Since I'm currently participating to the game jam, I don't really have much time to help you, sorry ! I wish you the best of luck though and I hope you're gonna make it
If the choice is between your game looking boring without cool stuff in it and using assets, definitely use assets to make it look nicer.
Lost a day to migraines but think I have a workable idea now
Anyone looking for a team? Im working on a project with another guy and we need another programmer
would probably help, but I'm focus on my game idea, which I think is something important that I should develop
Hey all, the soundly promo code has been updated to work for the rest of the week
Hey folks! How are your projects going so far?
my idea is great but i need another programmer
Haven't fully work on it yet I have Idea I feel like it is something important to make, but my worries is on how to tackle it now that I'm a solo developer, while I can use a lot of assets to help me in such as the sounds, visuals, and some of the programing. and I know they won't be negativily judge. part of me worries that it really decreases my chances of hitting the high ranks in the Jam
just try to have fun and learn
Getting into the jam-mood!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFRbZJXjWIA
that doesn't help that music can be more stressful to me then soothing
Sounds like you need some Black Metal π
Sometimes music with words is a little distracting for me.
@graceful oriole that doesn't fully help, I like what I do, but there is some strong importance with this Jam
Projects going good π Hardest part so far is brain storming
I need to learn more about what makes games fun
wut
fun is a very hard word to quantify, so it's better to not use it
Yeah I made that one for the summer jam
try thinking about things like challenge, satisfaction, etc.
that one was cute
Thanks π
@maiden loom I'll keep that in mind thank you, the main thing that I'm struggling with at the moment is creating challenging puzzles for the player that they have to communicate with their teammate to solve. It's finding that balance of making them hard so they're satisfying to complete, but not too hard to where they just blow through them
I'm deep in badly designed systems, but it's coming along π
Don't try to predict what would be fun for other people. Make something that you enjoy and find compelling. At least that's how I approach it.
hope to have something playable sometime tomorrow, a few parts are working so far, but as usual I opt to go for many systems that depend on eachother rather than a lot of separate mechanics, makes things tricky
you participating @civic dock ?
I also recommend following Allar's advice from the first Epic MegaJam: make one minute of fun gameplay first, then add to it if you have time.
I am! π
How's it going?
Well I hosted a meetup last night to kickoff the MegaJam, so most of my day was spent preparing for that, giving a presentation, then helping others brainstorm.
ooh, that's neat
So today I'm exploring my own ideas. If I don't find something compelling to do on my own, I'll join the others from my meetup and probably do audio.
Where was the meetup at? That seems like a ton of fun to do
@civic dock I could share the idea I'm thinking of developing
@wet rivet UnrealPDX, the Unreal meetup for Portland, Oregon.
What I am working on is "OK" gameplay. But it's very comical. Does that count, ya think?
Im sure thats fine, as long as it's enjoyable.
Many of the most popular jam submissions tend to be comical, so that works in your favor.
I'm still in a bad place, now as a solo dev. I mean most of my games are solo projects but none were required to be develop within a time frame (did a 48hr jam though) and some important prizes on the line
Don't worry about the prizes, just focus on having fun
Indeed.
The prizes are great, but shipping a fun game that you enjoy is way more satisfying. π
Building a fun game is what these are really about
Yeah, even if you make something super awesome, there's probably like 500 other teams also making great stuff, so the chances are super small. π
I like to think of the prizes as a pleasant surprise if I earn them. π
All I want to win is a t shirt, but I'm doubting that is going to happen. π
heh
I agree. If my game is good enough that some people play it I'm happy
Great minds think alike π
I'd take whatevet
@vapid thistle I get that but issue is that for me is that some of those prizes can be very helpful for someone really trying to make a living off of game development. Like I'm prod and happy with the games I develop in the past, but its honestly get frastrated when it seems like it gets ignored, and now your trying to make another game that hopefully gets some added attention and such.
@sonic echo there are a few prizes and 2000 entries. Odds of winning anything are slim to none. I'm sure there are at least a few teams of experienced developers that will most likely win these
so just don't think about it at all
Which prize are you talking about in particular? And that is what indie game developers go through. Most of the games are passed over. I've participated in over 6 game jams and the most hits I've gotten from one of my games is 150 ish
From over a year
Joining one of these with the mind set I'm going to win something isn't the best idea
@glass quarry yes I know the odds are very slim, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't try
I enrolled the jam hoping to improve my creativity, instead the absence of ideas is frustrating me...
@vapid thistle and yes I know we all go through the issues of making Indie games that mostly get ignored, but doesn't really change the way it makes me feel and the frustation
@cinder mist you working with a team or something?
Of course, and I'm not saying don't try to win. But don't focus on that aspect. I'm participating because I love making games and this is a great excuse to spend the entire week making something, hopefully, awesome
@vapid thistle it can also be the enter this Jam with a team and having that part fell apart on me
Iβm solo because I didnβt want to slow someone in a team
Hey guys, anyone using assembla here? I'm unable to create a repo for the project. it gives me a log error saying something went wrong. Anyone facing this?
@cinder mist what you mean
I have gone solo for every jam but this one
I just had to use premade assets
But that is cause I'm not good with art
The whole idea is just to have fun
Iβm not an expert in unreal, I didnβt want to be a weight for the team
I see how much experance?
Never finished a game in Unreal, only two games in unity
ah I see
Iβm an hobbyist...
okay
Is there any team for the epic game jam i can join?
what are your skills
Man, not making any progress on my game
What are you stuck on?
honestly everything. I do have a game idea and some of the mechainic, but not fully sure on how I should set it up and everything.
that's the fun part about a game jam, you just have to dive in and "do it stupid" π
like always in software dev, think of what you need to implement, then split it into smaller, more manageable chunks
and then start building piece by piece
and since it's gamejam, don't overthink it
yeah that is what I'm thinking about doing and such
I'll say that it could be that I was working on a game before the Jam, even show and sugested the game as a possible idea for the Jam, then the team fall out which now worries me on doing the jam a worry one of the past team would take my game idea and make it before I finish it after the jam, etc, etc
for me the hardest part is thinking of an idea that's fun and with a small enough scope
@sonic echo i can do BP and C++ programming, and i can also do a little netwoking with bp
Anything i'm missing on using component tags to identify a actor when colliding with it? The getTags function always returns 0 tags on both the player and the object its hitting (other in event hit)
I see
is there anyone who already has an idea and is making something?
many π
I'm here just sitting not being able to get my brain to work
0% usage and it can't go up lol
I have an Idea, but jsust can't get my mind to work on the concept
guys, we can't decide on a game idea
can you just decide for us or force us to do something? π
even spreadsheets are not giving us answers!
roll dice?
are you out of your mind? then someone will be forced to do something π
lol
we need someone from outside who forces everyone
i'll help you eliminate... i'll tell you which one to do and you'll immediately look at it and go: ehh, nah
Same. What are the choices so far?
@somber hazel i can help be impartial if that helps
Let's narrow it down. π
we decided, we all go solo
that... is an option
I think we should paste ideas here, see if #game-jam-chat thinks one is amazing
Go for it.
ideas are just ideas, implementation is what gets the million dollars π
I do! but feel it is bad form to paste our ideas if team wants to keep them secret
though, I agree, asking for help in this context makes little sense π
@radiant acorn That's mostly true. Not all ideas are a dime a dozen.
maybe go with the one you are most clear on how to implement
If your team wants to keep the ideas secret, I can respect that.
I just didn't get the impression that was the case since @somber hazel explicitly said they wanted outside help with making a decision.
Give everyone in the team 1 vote, and base that on
- How excited you are to spend a week working on it
- How big the scope is
- How easily you could take your next action tonight
Other than that the only thing i can see is getting someone else to decide for you, but as you said thats bad form if the rest of the team doesnt want to
βοΈ unless you want a random choice
I'm Autistic and I thought of a simple TallTale style advanture game in a crowded area where you play as a person who is autistic who is trying to socailize in this crowed with out suffering a mental breakdown. Basicaully it is a game that helps people experaince what goes in the mind of an autistic person and understand why people like me have issues with socailizing with people and have difficulty with things such as being in a crowed area
in that case definitely pick the second one on your list
@radiant acorn I like that except I think restricting everyone to one vote isn't useful. For example: you may run into situations where a 3 person team votes on 3 ideas, and each person chooses a different one.
I think it's better to let everyone vote on every idea, because then you'll see which ideas have the strongest support.
@sonic echo i can relate. Its a great idea but difficult to get the feel right in a week
Yeah - we have tried voting with "free rating" - and "ranking ideas in order" - results are coming out fairly even either way, no clear winner
@civic dock jepp your absolutely right, it depends on how many ideas there are.
You could also give everyone 2 votes, and they cant place the second vote on the same idea
(I even tried normalising free ratings)
@radiant acorn yeah I already have the idea on how to create the feeling and everything. before I develop games I did some educational speaking about being Autistic
eliminate by hate?
It's revealed some ideas no-one is keen on...
well that's something
but we still have several that at least one person does not want to do
How about this: for each idea, each team member must rate their enthusiasm for the idea and how doable they think it is, both on a scale of 1-3.
how many on your team?
Ah! good rating on multiple aspects - I like it
Then at the end, add up the totals for each idea and pick the one with both high enthusiasm and high do-ability.
@sonic echo Its a very hard challenge but would definitely score highly if done right. I would love to playtest it if you have a build
yeah hopefully, I'm still trying to figure it out by myself
@civic dock thats a good one as well π
Otherwise here are some that we use quite a lot at work. In particular Dot voting for features we need to build next
https://www.mountaingoatsoftware.com/blog/four-quick-ways-to-gain-or-assess-team-consensus
Nice. Those could work too!
I'm serious for once: If you can't tell which idea you want to pick, just flesh it out on the whiteboard, write down what every member could do...
but we'll probably write back in an hour, when we realize it's not the right choice, but we will flesh out the next one, mb it works π
backup plan is UT99 FFA deathmatch - winner gets to pick π
so hows the devving going everyone
I would just say give yourselves an hour or so to get it to a voting stage. Otherwise you'll end up spending more time deciding on what you should be making than the making
@slate salmon trying to finish up work so i can get started properly π
I'm busy exploring ideas. π
i got hung up on the idea phase for way too long during the last jam, ended up forcing me to drop it π¦
so ive committed to the first idea i had this time around, hopefully ill have something playable this time π
@radiant acorn i was lucky enough to get the week off π
I try to limit myself to the first 1-2 days for ideas and design.
I like to have a fleshed out idea before diving into Unreal.
Helps me avoid blank page syndrome.
I just DL soundly and got it going. Playing cat sounds and my cat lost its mind
MrrrrEEeeeeeOOOOW!! Haha
Ha! My dog had no reaction, which surprised me.
Probably, I think he's learned to ignore most of the noise coming out of my speakers.
Understand
@oblique cairn I'm pretty scrolled up in chat so this might be resolved π but our team came up with several fleshed out ideas then started weeding them out based on our proficiencies. So as a programmer I voted out a couple that would require a lot of AI work, the artist voted out a couple that would require too many unique models for her to make, etc
and additionally weeding by adherence to the 3 judging criteria
and we still had 3 ideas at the end that someone just said "Hey why don't we move forward with $RANDOM"
We have a new issue now - wanted to duel in ut99, but dont have it installed
So we are now stuck deciding on a game to duke it out in - seems to be an even harder problem π€£
though really - we may have a concept now - fleshing it out a little to see how it looks
Thanks everyone here for suggestions & advice
good luck!
fortnite \o/
fork-knife?
Nortfite.
Someone has already submitted a game...maybe it was a test upload.π€
I saw that. It's a game that was uploaded 4 days ago, too.
There's always at least one. lol
I had a sensible chuckle during the theme announcement livestream when Amanda explained something along the lines of, "If your game asks us to subscribe to a service outside of Itch.io, or asks for money, we will not be judging it. We will not pay for your submission."
And then explained that yes, multiple people really had tried that stunt in the past.
Yeah hahah. I remember those.
Gah
Hey can you judge my game? it's only $5
I think the game already submitted maybe they just want someone to try their game. Dunno
"List any content that was created before the jam that was included in the final submission.
- Dog
- Doghouse
- Bed
- Door
- Microwave"
...isn't that all of it π
there have been unity games submitted before too π
@maiden loom that made me rofl so hard π€£
Hahahahahaha
has anyone else had issues with quixels megascans not being free with their epic account?
man already past a day and I really haven't made any progress to my GameJam game
@spring magnet -> Try downloading Bridge. If you login using your epic creds it all works smoothly. You just need to make sure when you export meshes/etc. you set up the right locations. π
@sonic echo - Don't feel so bad - I've been working all day, got home and the boss wanted to watch me play some Death Stranding... Now it's 12:10am and I'm only just sitting down to start setting up my project. (Most people I've spoken to suggest getting the core gameplay down by the end of Sunday is the main goal for success) - So that's the plan! π
ive been stuck on animations so far, so im in a similar boat!
I'm still in the ideation phase myself. π
Planning to settle on an idea by tonight and start fleshing it out before I even jump into Unreal.
The game concept I'm doing is so much different than I expected I would do..but I will have fun trying to do it.
I'm finally done with other stuff and ready to start the jam
I've got a couple ideas, gameplan is doing some research into which ideas are possible with the limited time
@wind aspen same. im doing advanced mechanics than im used to, as well as larger scale. and multiple inputs.
Oh have a question, there is a Plugin called MeshTool that can let you edit models and even make some 3D models in Unreal, what would the GameJam opinion on useing the plugin to make you own models?
I'd say it's the same as using Maya/max/blender/etc if you use it for making 3D models and it doesn't give an advantage over those in some big way
Then again I'm not a judge so not sure what the official stance is
a wild buddy appears
i wasnt going to participate in this jam btw, but im glad i did
That looks very bright and colourful
looking for a level designer to join our team - had someone leave and we have a project well under way
@carmine kindle its mainly the post process effect (Advanced Cel Shader) from the marketplace.. yeah i can't keep my daughter away from this game lol
its not fun its work!!!
the Ui is ready π
Fancy
Time to clock out from the first actual day for me, went decent, stuck with a bit of bugs because I made the systems a tad more complex by adding another dimension, but I'll tackle that in the morning.
How's it going for everyone else?
Finally settled on an idea and ready to start fleshing it out tonight.
Nice!
Day one went well...got the plan for the rest of the week
As an added bonus, this idea will almost definitely fit under 100MB.
Good stuff, my plan involves having the basic gameplay loop done by tomorrow, so hopefully I can keep that timeline ^^
Aiming for the same thing here. Flesh out the design tonight, prototype the core loop tomorrow.
Shoutout to the incredible physics systems built into Unreal engine and my very scientific method of using them by throwing in random numbers
thought I make some simple NPC's for my game about autism, might fit the feeling of talking to faceless people
I have to mentally restrain myself from making it pretty too soon
?
Progress from today, still struggling on gameplay mechanics, but figured I'd get some basic environment assets together while I think it through π
(Also a good excuse to play with 4.24's new sky/atmosphere features)
Just saw that it's 3:30am, might be time for sleep π
ohhhh boy we've got some fun stuff coming together https://imgur.com/a/HsE6qZe
Reminds me of audiosurf
@minor hemlock that track makes me think space tree
Sigh... starting to think maybe I should not bother with the Jam, while I have an idea for the Jam, but I'm having trouble really thinking much on setting the game. and maybe part of is that I was heavily working on a Horror game and am getting a good amount of work done on it and part of me felt it could be remade or something during this Jam with a team, but that fell apart
if there's any point to give up in a jam it's at the last second π might as well run with it until then!
first day of dev is always stressful, team or not
lol true
yeah dont quit @sonic echo your already entered. why give up? who knows, you may even be the one to make the next 5star title
true, be nice and could just need to hit the right trigger
Just make something that you have fun making. Even if it's something silly and dumb.
they know its a jam, they arent expecting 6k 3d photorealistic VR masterpieces. they just want to see what we can do
I didn't even work yesterday for same reason @sonic echo but it clicked today
Take a break, just not a 6 day one π
lol
https://firehuskystudios.itch.io/colonial-betrayalMy progress so far
right now its all "default" minuss the earth. i used a test mat
think you messed up your link there a bit
Neat, some kind of shooter coming out of that?
yep. you start off in space in a capitol ship. youll receive an auditory distress call from earth, you go to earth, shoot the enemy squad, bring the survivors back to the capitol vessel. (thats all i can do right now, but i will most likely polish it later)
@limber bear what's the material on that air pulse look like? Asking for a friend
you mean the glass or the sky
ah
check out the HeatDistortion amterial
in starter content
should give you an idea
alright guys. bedtime for me. chat withh ya tomorrow. good luck to everyone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEf8qIsla0s day 2 of the JAM!
Reworking all player controls, remade climbing, added thrusters, physical force and physics. Added player hands and various more models
@indigo kiln woah did you make that earth?
thats so cool, great job
@indigo kiln this is looking great...
the issue is, atmosphere is inverted...
unless it's meant to be a planetary shield, which is exactly what i need for my project π
yea, the atmo is odd, it needs to be more of an outward glow
to fix it, use 1-fresnel, and apply it to sphere that has inverted normals
yea, i can fix, just havent gotten around to it
just kinda going off my imagination, not really pulling up reference
there, fix'd
why people can make such a goodness in 2 days and yet we have really crappy games in general?
The more stuff you have time to add, the more likely there's something that makes it look bad
i have slept 5 hours, thats how xD
Looks good @indigo kiln
thanks π
I actually did similar earth once for ue4 project as well
Same source images :p
You basically just put light side image as color input and dark side image as emissive input and it works itself out automatically
mine is actually unlit, using sun projection and alot of blending to create some depth
i suspect that i might not be able to think of a fun idea.. but as in every jam right as it ends I'll have the game of the year idea that I could've made π
I'm going to trim sheet/tilable the shit out of this game π
lucky its a side scroller
how to force ur brain to work? mine is just not wanting to cooperate..
solve small problems
then you'll feel amazing from solving that small problem and want to solve the next one
π€
hey so it's 5am for me and im failing at something that i think should be easy
i modified the ue4 mannequin and when i reimport it into ue4 i get this:
i didnt change the skeleton or anything, i dont understand π¦
what did you use to modify?
i just imported the mannequin into maya, moved a single face a little bit, then tried putting it back into ue4; as a test
Autodesk Maya LT specifically
try importing it back into maya and see if anything is different in the skeleton. sounds like another root got added or something
notta, looks exact same (in terms of outliner stuff)
what happens when you import as a new skeleton?
aha
when imported as new skeleton
hmm
omg now it works, aha
so you got it right, it was a new root :P
when i export the mannequin and throw it into maya, it groups it under SK_Mannequin, and when i export that, it uses the group as the new root
thanks π
π yay
Time to start day 2 for me, how's it going for you all?
hey, has anyone ever encountered this issue where in the message logs it states something along the lines of:
"Failed to load Outer for resource.....SubstanceTexture2D"
@zenith gust wiggling my gamepad stick wondering why it doesn't work. Forgot to plug it in. So.. well?
Haha, it's always the obvious stuff that gets you eh
I spent 2 hours late yesterday night when I ought to have gone to sleep debugging problems with null pointers, couldn't for the life of me figure them out
turns out my if was checking that it WAS null, rather than that it wasn't π
lesson learned is just try to go to sleep earlier, despite the hype
Jammin'
Player character mockup π
that reminds me, I needa build a character for my game D:
My character is just a camera at this stage, depending on time I might keep it as that π
seems like space is a common theme this time heh
also, placing a planet mesh and making it work wit the sky atmosphere shader is hell
low effort zero g gif whilst taking a break
I really need to get some assets done if only just for motivation, I'm just debug rendering my stuff at the moment and it always feels so far off then π
how we all doing? π
Finally ironed out the bugs in my map generation, at least the very basic ones, so now to add some more things for it to work with
how about you?
gotten the local multiplayer working ideally with a shared camera, but I'm having to use a fake shared camera instead. so I'm just focussing on some environment art right now, then tommorrow I'm going to start the character.
well the shared camera ins't working
well i finally got a game idea xd
so instead I'm just using the sequencer to push the camera along the level while it carries blocking volumes to the end.
aah, well that does work too tbh
well it was because @limber bear post xd
good enough for an mvp/jam π
its not ideal, but I've spent the whole last 2 days mucking around with the multiplayer and shared camera too much I gotta move on haha
yeah its very possible for that sort of thing haha
that'll be basically me with the character I think
@copper patrol haha glad I could help
The cosmos man source of knowlege XD
watch this to chill a bit
Puritan Roommate Finds Love. Jedidiah Diligence Breckinridge III, or commonly known as the 'puritan roommate' is back! And this time, despite the devil's work, he's lucky enough to find love. This is a joyous occasion no dooooooubt! Cleanse yourselves and watch now!
Watch al...
not gonna be any GOTY or something but as long as I see shadowriver play it I am pleased lol
but that's a bummer that i didn't start earlier, would've had 1 more day to work
still plenty of days left, a theme you feel is worthwhile is more important imo
also can someone please link that project template that takes up little space when packaged
Nano, it's on github
I think there's that option that only packages whats called in the editor
Someone already submitted? or is that something else?
Either they didn't read the rules and used something fully premade, or they made something so hasty that it's not anything to worry about
sometimes there's that one person that submits a 2 year old game, it'll just get filtered out
π
haha wow
haha fairnuff. this is my first game jam and looking through this discord is super discouraging π
people are so fast its nuts
game about a dog
don't compare too much, especially if it's your first time
youtube tutorials on steroids for the week
some people have jammed many many times over the years, naturally they have the workflow down
is it not allowed to watch tutorials XD ?
I'm fast at making but I'm not making anything most of the time, that's why I might look slow at making games
just focus on yourself and your plans/estimates, and remember to scale down so you actually have time!
no @copper patrol you're not allowed to watch tutorials, you have to work it all out yourself just like the original devs did π xD xD
you have to make your own engine lmao
and you have to get it pre approved by epic before submission
i had my own rendering engine lol
oh nice!
@zenith gust yeah thats definitely what we are focusing on. the main goal is to create something that is complete. no matter how small. ofc something preferably fun too : P but ty for the tips and encouraging words : )
but seriously u can use anything
Also, remember that even the very experienced professionals look things up, it's not like everyone has it all in their heads, they're just quicker to look it up and remember what they did the time before π
@wintry beacon I hope you have fun! It's all too easy to compare yourself to others etc
I really gotta make a note book
@zenith gust true true π π I am !
Hell, my entry still only looks like a lot of debug spheres being rendered, but at least I am getting there on the mechanics π
a funny thing that level designers would encounter quite a bit with 3D side scrollers is set pieces getting in the way
would probably needa make a post process material and have that as a tinted box so I know where the player is going
custom depth/stencil usually does the trick and looks good enough for me ^^
I'll probably skip this one
giving in to the inevitable?
I think the theme is good but I'm not really feeling it in terms for the ideas I've got
fair
my engine crush while importing texture -__-
Some progress π
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude
Environment mostly done, working on my character now
https://i.gyazo.com/9704f61ce082ad818a03605a42adc35d.mp4
@uneven fractal looking good, what's the game about?
trying to make a realistic Risk of Rain 2 lol
how does a space cat look? π€
do u guys know about spacescape ? it create skyboxs for UE4, however it rotated in wrong direction
@copper patrol https://sourceforge.net/p/spacescape/bugs/30/#81e0
Has anyone encountered an issue opening projects on ver 4.23.1?
everything is fine for me on 4.23.1
Darn it - I'm trying to open my project and it loads up, but then just shows me the epic launcher again and doesn't seem to open the editor. π’
Working a new issue now, this one is a hole in the ship
Still gotta tweak the values to get a nice vacuum feel but it's getting there
Looking good!
Does anyone know how you can get the specific location of a tile in a tilemap? When I get the hit location it gives me the origin of the tilemap
another day passed, now I can sleep;
@vapid thistle you cannot afaik
Hmmm, I thought I had at one point, but maybe I was doing something else.. Thank you!
@vapid thistle try to make a complex collusion box for your tale and return the hit location again
my ass hurts from how much i was just sitting and making a game
Well just finish watching the film Klaus, and man put me in a heart warming good mood, gonna get some launch and relax and think of my game
Hello. Have anyone have had any issues receiving Assembla accounts for the Jam?
oh forget it, I just received π
@copper patrol Thank for the suggestion but I found a workaround using linetraces
@mental walrus could you not. I DONT NEED U TO SHOW ME HOW AWESOME YOUR PROGRESS IS XD
unreralated to games, but today I'm offically an Uncle
ay congrats
Congratulations!
thanks
Any reason why I cannot change the local transform position/rotation?
because you can't change the root components rotation
Even the box collision
can you click on the box collision and send another screenshot?
don't use attachto in construction script
No? Oh, okay
use SetupAttachement(OtherComponent)
wait, that's a weird way to set the root component
can't you just use:
RootComponent = Mesh;
or
SetRootComponent(Mesh);
did you also try SetRootComponent?
finally a character.... lmao
what really demotivates me now is that whenever i test package my game and try to launch it it says DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL and closes
and i have no idea what causes that
4.24?
4.23.1
btw whats the difference between fullscreen and that other fullscreen
other is true fullscreen, other is borderless fullscreen
if you tab out of true fullscreen, it can minimize the game window
where borderless is just regular desktop app just made to fill the whole screen and have no borders, so you can tab out just fine and keep the game rendering on the background
it still keeps showing
anybody else going for MP based award?
and if so... are you using direct connect?
thought to use steam, but then that would require i give out keys..... seems really not worth it for this jam
but would be nice to just connect via steam
if you use steam, you'd use 480 spacewar for steamid
I'm doing steam but using app ID they allow people for development
usually the safest bet is to just do direct ip connection
but, for them to download it... they would need steam? right?
or i could do compile and just send that over and it would still work
they would need steam running but not for download
you can play dev builds without downloading them through steam
hm.....
but seriously tho, if you haven't done this before, it's a steep learning curve during the jam π
you could just do direct IP connect
just never done it without keys
we have direct IP right now, but silly and annoying unblocking ports and all that jazz
steam connect so simple π
people need to be on the same steam region for that to work
at least for spacewar I think?
nods
unrelated steam picture
cat space warrior looking dope π
and ty for the info, didnt know i could do it without distribution through steam
FINALLY the packaged game works!
i'm so happy
thanks @small fern
Hello, sorry, do you know if there is a discord for Assembla?
I need to setup my perforce project and they haven't setup my enviroment.
I received this email but I don't know if I need to receive another.
Character half done https://i.gyazo.com/aa5f716d5eb434192565dff8fd06d95d.mp4
another caveat with using spacewar ID is that you have to have the players set their steam clients to the same download region
otherwise they can't connect together
yeah we talked about that briefly later as well
here's what I have so far, feels pretty good π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oyZcgPEIjA
@rocky raven Wow that's an incredible movement system, it's so fluid
Can I use a 3d model with cc attribution?
Updated my simple characters for my game, which might call it The Autism Experaince
aanybody have advice on how to merge like 5 geometry shapes into one?
put them in your scene select them all and right click on them and use the merge tool
yeah, on import you can do that
its an option
or group them
ctrl + g
HATE CONTROL RIGS
hardest part is now done... time to animate this mofo
i keep getting an "Insufficient mesh components found for merging" error
they arent props or anything. just basic geometry
no clue
never tried to merge bsp
google merge bsp
UE4 merge bsp**
that would be best search results
thank u so much. also your pc rig looks great
hehe, thanks! β€οΈ
Here is the little spherical world I made for the game jam. Quite technically challenging, I have a base actor with a movement component that can make anything move in an orbit π There are no hacks here. The rockets go around the world and hit you π€£
EPIC MEGAJAM 2019 - RIUTHAMUS Working on our submission for this year! #gamedev #gameart #indiedev #ue4 #unrealengine #unrealjam
Mmm... I thinking of an idea that helps with my game, could use some people opinion on it
Its terrible! What is it?
well my game is so far am calling The Autism Experance and it's a game to help people get to experance a bit of what it like being autistic (I have asperger's). I was having trouble thinking of what scenario that will give this issue and what is the goal. and now I have a simple idea it basically the lead player is trying to delever a note to his ex-girlfriend who works at a night club. an extreme crowed/loud inviroment, a place that can easily put me in a mental breakdown easy.
that can get creepy, considering the note is for ex
depending on the context of course
the game ends with the note saying... "you told me that if I really was a man I could walk in to the club and see you, well if you got this note then I prove to you I am. I'm sorry that you just couldn't understand what goes on in my head. I wish you the best of luck"
@minor hemlock I'm going to lose my mind if that spiral in the center doesn't turn π
no, it's like a warning sign
I'll be attaching obstacles on those sections
oh the one on the center of the ship
no, but there are moving parts planned for the ship
The barber shops everywhere will be so disappointed
anyone looking for team still? we need a level designer! project well under way
@sonic echo its really cute, good luck with it ;D
thanks good luck to you to
folks, we're looking for animator and coder. There's crowdforge team link π https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/5058
If we make an android game, can we upload the APK to itch.io or do we have to put it on google play?
someone suggested I fake the planet sizes and heck, it feels good π https://imgur.com/a/bWoZAql
noice
Looking good!
damn @minor hemlock that looks super good
ty ty
the editor view is pretty fun
even knowing the trick, you're still pretty well fooled by it from the player POV
Hi, is character creatos softwares allowed for ue4 jam??
Yes, but make sure you mention them when you submit the game
Improved thrusters with fuel, reworked interactibles, climbing in airlock, better head collision
@rugged plaza everything for the jam should be submitted to itch.io
read the rules please, you need to publish your game's page (on itch.io / make it public), and then go to official jam page to submit the project to epic... theres always that last minute struggle to figure out submission rules
be prepared (mufasa voice)
im heading more and more towards a kids educational game, so i hope the judges have time to procriate and have babies to play my game
Under the rules it says Android submissions "can" be put on google play, but it doesnt say if they have to be. That's where the confusion came from
how do you go about changing the field of view on the Side Scroller Character Camera?
when I select the component the details panel is empty
Great to see everyone's progress so far! Lots of cool stuff being made. π
Keep on keeping on!
Still slow on mine, but getting there, decided to post a WIP video of a game I was developing before the Jam in #work-in-progress if anyone wants to see and give there thoughts
0 clue if it will make in our game, but...
https://i.gyazo.com/1ac679e867c64be39b73a8badeb14d95.mp4
Does the shooter game fall under Epic games starter template?
Still trying to make my idea smaller
@onyx moon probably just replace the Side scroller camera with a new one, and also you can probably use post process volumes to change the camera settings.
I think my problem is making a side scroller template in C++
oh, thats fair enough I'm just doing mine in BP
ya gonna make it in BP and migrate it in
there we go
camera component no longer inherited and details hidden
@onyx moon if its not showing up in BP maybe you didn't make the component Blueprint ReadWrite editable in its header file? , no expert on subject
I tried making it ReadWrite in the C++ version and it didnt work
but then again I don't know much about using C++ in unreal
LoL gamejams are fun, i was like, time to switch to niagara, oh boy look at all those options, nevermind
ya lol
watching youtube tutorials hoping for the best
you could manage a real basic particle in niagara
but it'll take a few days to get a good handle on niagara
im pretty good with cascade, but niagara threw me off with all that timeline stuff
its mega different
nah haha
I got it working now
awesome
the C++ threw me off
When we submit, does the engine folder have to be in the zip file? Noob, sorry
from what I remember from the stream, they're not interested in the source code
just the game, and the files it requires to run
just everything that gets built
you submit published(compiled) game
everything where the .exe is made
Quick question, when we are packaging for Android it doesnt specify in the rules, should we package for multi or ETC1?
what is the best method for importing a .dds into unreal? Im trying to make a custom skybox
Are you ready to answer Commander Drumpf's call over his latest screwup? https://streamable.com/a7942
Submissions may not contain personal attacks on anyone or any discernible product, including competitor products.
Hmm the game doesn't mention that name, but it is using his likeness + the character is expecting you to fix his mistake π€
Does that count as a personal attack?
if you have to ask π
Better safe than sorry then
You'd probably be better off not going political
Welp, time to mish mash it into another face
Pew pew
Prototype still not finished properly: aw f it, I'm going to look for sound already π
Changed him π @minor hemlock
is that a picture of you? π€
is that kitboga?
finally done modelling my first full human
equipped with facial-feature-blocking goodies to avoid modelling that stuff
lmao its so long right
thanks π trying to make him classy
@somber hazel Nope lol
cat helmet
Hahah nice. π
I spent the whole day designing and fleshing out my concept. Just getting started on development now.
Haha yeah.
I'm keeping things pretty simple and focusing on my strengths, so I'm confident I'll be able to ship something.
Pretty excited.
Managed to get something packaging and deploying properly, as well as quite a bit of the designs. Tomorrow is going to be just bashing them together and see if i can get the core mechanics working
Had to rework some of my ideas, but new fresh day here starting with a few more mechanics, feeling decent about it
haha its 6am here so not so fresh in the head π
7 am here, but I woke up at 6, trying to keep my sleep schedule as normal π
yesterday did not go as planned, had to rework some stuff etc, but it's feeling pretty solid now with a lot of helper/convenience stuff done so implementing actual mechanics feels good
speaking of packaging, good you mentioned it, should do the daily package check
Level Blueprint, just slapping 1 event after another ;P
1 switch that starts with music fading, then weird stuff happening
sorry for the repost, the video didn't seem to play, so work in progress to show the experance of autism, with what goes on in my mind when I'm in a huge crowd. Also added a mechanic base on the routeine the people like me do at times (Taping the Head, Wiggle fingers, etc.) could get some opinions on the WIP
Hmm, still does not move at all when it plays for me, does it play properly on your computer?
It plays if you download it, must be something to do with discord
yeah seems to only work when download, maybe I should do a simple unlisted post on Youtube
Okay sense the videos I post are not working (unless download) I decide to post an unlisted YouTube of the work in progress of the Autism game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK58G5ZKlEg
serious question comming from me: does anyone know if the epicleaderboard compiles and works for 4.23?
been a while since I used it last time and the website shows latest version is 4.20 π¬
@somber hazel I somehow have it working on 4.23
goldcat
I think it was by recompiling it a lot of times on different versions
that gold cat lookin hella thicc
so for a game I'm making I really need a destructible mesh and I need it to have complex collision when it's not broken, but when it's not broken it just has one big box of collision around it
@glass fossil thanks for the info! π₯
Anyone know where I can find some decent animations for melee weapons?
Not sure how fun it would be to extract them, but there's always the free Paragon assets in the marketplace
yeah i remember trying some of the paragon animations once and it was super easy to get them working with the ue4 mannequin, basically plug and play
From my experience over the past 3 days doing this jam, I have come to a conclusion that I am having trouble wrapping my head around the theme.
You don't have an idea for the theme?
I have one but idk how to implement the thing that's the game is fully based on
theres a song by SIAMES that i reaaaally want to use in this > . <
I'm having too much fun with these.
haha man, thats great π
Making an entire game in a week, for the Epic Game Jam day 3 or 4, ive lost track, added SFX, bathroom sink for thrusters, breathing heavily into a mic, and ...
That looks amazing!!
with an offline renderer, shitloads of time, and a render farm?
So whats the average game jam length (days)? this is my first GJ and im hearing this GJ was pretty long [Which im grateful for, I'm still nooby and need the time! XD] ?
The Unreal jams are usually about a week, maybe a little less.
ah ok cool. thats a good amount of time. would struggle to do a 2 day GJ so about a week is awesome
Back when they started, they used to take place every month and were about 3 days long. It's a different experience doing a long weekend vs a whole week for sure.
yeah true
Crews Quaarters
Quick question..
Im wanting to add ar oom to this build that would be "still under development" during the final build. is that frowned upon?
What would "still under development" mean exactly?
I think in general less content but with higher quality is what goes the best
rather than a lot of unfinished / low quality content
we are building a prototype π
yeah for sure, in some sense everything will be still under development ^^
Only if you plan on developing it after submitting it to the jam
@zenith gust what im meaning is i want to build a room on the ship for a kitchen with a door that says "innacessible" or "under construction" as Im wanting to polish it after the game jam for distributing.
You can just put a locked door there if it's not a critical part of the gameplay and no one will even have to know.
Thats what i was thinking. it will be used at a later time, but for the purposes of the jam, its not a required aspect of gameplay
As long as it's not any default textures etc
but if it truly wont be part of the jam gameplay then why have it there at all?
pretty much as a place marker so i dont accidentally build in its spot
and for aesthetic purposes
I mean i was planning on a door that non-functional. but i could just "wall" the area
What I'm getting at is, if you dont want them to see the innards of the room, but rather just the locked door, add the locked door and then add a big temporary shape/brush/whatever where said room would be so you don't have to worry about building in that volume accidentally
or rather, don't overthink it ^^
Day 2 is over. π (For me, skipped day 1). Off to bed. Current Progress: https://streamable.com/av1xx
Nice!
Random question are line traces expensive (if used by around 40-50 enemies?)
Depends on how often you use them
if used by many enemies every tick it adds up
it's all about how you scale it really, any one single thing is rarely that expensive on its own
laughs in GetAllActors
π
@zenith gust hmm ok . well every 7 seconds i'd make my enemies fire 5 line traces (40ish enemies)
but i see what you mean
i guess imma have to test it n hope n then optimise
to anyone looking for team, we (3 people currently, music/sound, concept/art direction, 3D tech/secondary coder roles) are looking for animator and coder. We've done some stuff, if you're interested, hop in for more info/talk π https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/5078
That looks so neat
That hurts
well, the last Overlap is called Fight for a reason, you better don't freeze π
@pine fulcrum I hope you're playing jam games again, because I've got another elevator game with lots of fiddly controls
@minor hemlock is that a space elevator?
heckyeah
f-zero-space-elevator
now that I say that out loud why didn't we make this a multiplayer racing game
i wonder how many games will be about Cats... rhetorical question
@brave current nice design, does it have a backstory?
@maiden loom i think this look can be achieved in ue4...yet, i think it will take 3-4 days to make, and a can't tell anything about performance
we have a ... substantial number of cats
this may or may not be a planet in game π
guessing a few
oh, a realistic cat...is it made from scratch?
The cat yes, the animations were purchased. too much work
and my game idea required a realistic cat
like a cat cat
might give it a helmet if I have the time
So I'm trying to build a VR template so I can grab the input settings but for some reason Unreal is stuck at 45% when creating it
probably compiling shaders
How many shaders does a default template have?
4.23?
OH SHIT it finished
20 min
so according to the output log there are roughly 5425 shaders in the VR template
yeah, that's slightly above empty project
yea but when I first started my project I used the FPS project just so I had a walkable character and that took seconds to compile
yeah, I think that's only because less people use VR and they don't precompile or something, dunno
anyone used gimp 2.10 ? can't save dds file to cubemap
I feel that @somber hazel
maybe use lesser overclocking..or roll back some drivers
Lmao
Only at 4.5ghz on a 3800x
Could be the mem oc... soon ill make some toast and jam on my motherboard anyone want sum
Is there a way to do Sessions in multiplayer without having players port forwarding and not using Steam or another service?
@stable kiln that is what nightmares are made of π (not being mean i swear)
@glass fossil nope (at least not within this game jam)
that is the main reason why steam is widely used as it has almost 100% nat punchthrough success
Probably out of the scope of this jam, though I imagine the graders have already thought of this
... and have their ports forward
they've had 5 years worth of buggy games to test their setups for sanity, so probably π
@limber bear great looking HUD, how's it implemented? worldspace widget object?
widget component
which is screen space
tied to a spring arm
with a rotation lag
π
@civic dock, did they give us contact information to ask them questions if we need to?
is there animator wanting to do a jam? We're currently 4 people (coder/3d tech/art direction/music/sound roles covered). We need someone to make game world more lively π We have a fairly settled art direction and gameplay, PM me if you would like to know more π
How's everyone going? I got all my programming 'must haves'. Now its time for visual art work. π
@glass fossil They who? Who do you need to contact for questions?
One of the graders, essentially if we're expected to find a 3rd Party Service for multiplayer sessions
No multiplayer service is being provided for the jam, if that's what you're asking.
@wind aspen pretty much in the same boat, taking a programming pause to make some basic textures and trims, got one bug that eludes me and I've picked a bit too complex of a system for such a short time π
I decided to go for a wavefunction collapse based map generation, was not too hard to get going, but converting it to 3D took time. The issues now have been re-running it on modified data, to make it generate new layouts fluidly when interacting with the game. That logic has been a bit of a headache
Yeah I kept my scope really small for this one. I usually run out if time so i wanted to be sure I finish this time.
I thought the scope would be small but underestimated just how few resources were out there on the 3D version of it, so I had to dig down deep to learn how it all worked
been very fun though so far
and still a few days to make art/audio once I get this final issue resolved
your game mechanics up and running now then jay?
time to package π΅
Yeah i got all my game mechanics going. There's a few of 'like to have' features i will do after I do the art end if I still have time.
Yeah I need to try packaging today. Thanks for the reminder π
@civic dock Yeah, but I was hoping to find out if they'll be testing Multiplayer locally so we dont need to worry about finding a service
@zenith gust cmon, screenshots!
quick question guys, I have a bp actor that will break when sufficient impulse force is applied, I want to have lots of props have this behavior. Is it wise to make a single core bp and make lots of child bp from it with the only change being the static mesh or is there a better way?
@minor hemlock I'll post a gif once I figure out this darn bug, though it's all just placeholder cubes still π
@craggy zodiac In most cases it would be better to make child classes if they share functionality
well these objects all do the same
they are objects that have physics/can be picked up/ will be damaged/and will return a score at the end
The only difference will be their static meshes and some internal values
damn. I didn't want to participate, since I don't have time. But I fooled around the last two days and I might have some VR stuff going that is actually fun.
Yeah i envy those who can free up an entire week. I just dev whenever I can.
so this may sound like a dumb question.. but how can i build my project with only content specific to the project? I imported some marketplace content, some of which i am not using, and the packager is cooking everything
@spring magnet There are some good guides on this - but main thing to do is in project settings "cook only maps" and select maps you want to cook
I'm having a small problem, my character gets destroyed when it goes below z: -1000. Anyone here know where to modify this?
@spring magnet i feel your painπ
I appreciate the help @wind aspen i really do. thank you. and yeah.. it really sucks lol
@zinc juniper world settings Z kill
@wind aspen Ah great, thanks!
@spring magnet I think this methods only significant downside is if you have lots of maps, annoying to list them all
one more thing.. how do i change it from windowsNoEditor when packaging
