so
now we have one week time to try to inject some theme ideas into your head
!gameidea
A fighting game where you pinch rocks in the year 30,000.
A role-playing game where you pound the fabric of reality in a cabin in the woods but you have no legs.
well, that would be a seated experience..
The theme has to be random
Because I'll want to participate sometimes
So I am just using some random generators online
Any theme I deem crappy, I will add the following: "in the bed" at the end
I think "hit" is missing
And this sounds like a perfect "in the bed" ending
Chinese Fortune Cookies
op
well, if you randomize them, you could do like 10 of them and then run a poll like one day before it starts
Aye, that's another way of doing it
just going with one randomized thing could mean the theme would put a lot of people off
if it's just some nonsense thing
True true, but isn't that how we did it every month though?
But, I like the idea of a poll
I guess for next week's, anyone tuning in can just vote
well the epic jams themes still had some thought on them, if it's just one thing from random generator, it can be something totally unusable
"some thought" ?
๐
yeah, I didn't like the early ue4 jam themes
they've been better on second year though
They have gotten better for sure
oh right
this will mean that those Game Jam Finalist star badges will be more rare for new jammers too
Aye, I still need one more for prestige ๐
my chances of ever winning have vanished
@ashen meadow Only lessened a bit
Unless the prizes are rediculous
and participation is equal
more prizes = more competitive
Right, and sadly, it shouldn't have to be
(that people only participate when there are prizes)
glad to hear the other ones will still be weekends at least
I dunno
I expect quarterly jams to have way more people attending as they aren't that common events anymore
so getting into top-3 might be a lot more difficult
agreed
on a slow month maybe i had a chance
with teams competing the entire time for big prizes, forget it
unless they add in some of those incentives every month like they had for the last megajam
not every month. every jam
you mean the special categories?
yeah
Well, if they don't, I can
Obviously need to get at least the participation of last month's before we can expand
@small fern - Today at 3:13 AM
@digital fern why you don't have a star on marketplace badge? You have 3 items there
as allar said need 5 :p
rip
you need to get the marketplace pack of the month to get this
damn I gotta finish the replay system
Vote for mine
voting already closed :p
^
I gave you a little social media love and broke out the good cat gifs for you @rigid fog
Thank you sir
That sure is a good cat gif ๐ฎ ๐
UnrealAlexander - Today at 12:00 AM
I'd rather have you all really competing then just sending me raffle entries :p
I smell chicken, oh wait, that's me, I got roasted ๐
๐
yeah, I don't like the community pick thing either
it's not fair at all
it can become a popularity contest more than people actually voting for the best asset
But isn't it what community pick is all about?
voting for what you enjoyed/find interesting/beautiful/funny ?
@small fern
@sweet flame that's what it should be about but as people cough promote and ask people to vote for their thing, it unsets the balance of the whole idea
๐ฆ
as marketplace seller, it makes sense you to do that kind of thing as you'll get tons of visibility for the asset
I like the idea of community, as you have a large group of people voting, so it isn't like 2 people's preferences, but yeah, biasing etc is a thing :9
Can we see the community pick list somewhere?
I just don't like the separate voting scheme at all, it should be rather some statistic from people who've actually bought the asset
that would be way better metric
Yeah a voting button should appear in the marketplace asset page once you buy it
altho with quarterly jams this place is going to be quiet
Technically there is rating I guess
So Epic are looking at LD success and trying to mirror it + give more time to their community people to promote fewer, bigger jams? Should be a neat experiment.
Definitely trying to do something
Kinda sad about losing my monthly 'oh god it's 5am I need to stop watching the Jam stream and go to sleep' day.
the quarterly jams are for you!
ha ha
alex didnt want you to get burnt out anymore
just looking out
I did 9/12 jams last year, and I missed two due to just straight up burnout.
wonder how many i did
right in that ballpark
the ones i missed either couldnt come up with a good enough idea
or went too far down the rabbit hole on an idea that ended up just sucking
I think 9 anyway. Missed December, October, and...August?
but i mean so you were burned out and took a month off
nothing wrong with that
you still came back
ha ha
i dunno. it was a dumb excuse when there are plenty of other reasons why they are doing it
October I wanted to do but the wife didn't want me ignoring her and jamming on our honeymoon.
yeah thats a tough one
August/December I had the mechanics done for a game, it wasn't fun, and I just stopped.
yeah
ha ha
i had a couple of those too
or it took forever to get what i wanted working, then i realized it was awful anyways
and i mean real awful
Spent the team actually playing video games for a weekend. Was nice.
i submitted plenty of awful games
ha ha
but yeah should be interesting to see
especially come december or after a few of them
see if they are still getting 100+ entries for them
which i am guessing what they are hoping for
wonder how long it'll take now for the results to arrive
they may come one month late now =p
Yeah. I'm thinking the point of the Jam from Epic's standpoint is to get people creating with the engine. Bigger carrots at the end of that stick may work.
that would make sense
can you not just say that?
ha ha
still not sure why they cant do both?
like just have 4 bigger ones every year and keep the monthlies
i dont think big prizes on something where u can cheat easy is a good idea
that would burn out people even more ;D
this will bring shitstorms and fingerpointing
I just think they need to get rid of raffles
see this is all the stuff they could test during the monthlies before the next big one
different rules etc
actually enforcing a deadline
Wait, this means I have 3 more months to prepare and make assets for the next jam :3
I don't mind if people submit late, but it would need to affect the scoring
yes, it means exactly that ;D
Nearly used all my assets, next jam it would start to be obvious if I reuse my old stuff
Thanks god I have more time now

I'd like to see it be more of an event since it's less frequent now...theme voting, group plays at epic, stuff like that. @ruby cradle
ha ha
yeah, I'd love theme voting
like even ability to vote for the final theme day or two before jam starts
you could kick of the voting on tuesday stream
A theme you can't think of anything for in 72 hours kills jams for you for six months now instead of one.
@ashen meadow did u start ur last 2 project from blank btw?
i did
I'm pretty sure the pipetetris was from scratch
it was buggy enough to make it believable
lol i totally cant do that, i dont get any ideas staring at a gray lvl ๐
wish i had tried tetris before
i think so
And then - I think it was - Derzo, who just made a great game with like 0 assets and beat teams :3
i looked at it during the decemebr jam since they are both on the epicleaderboard
plus if you really want to watch me struggle, i stream most of the jams at twitch.tv/shattyue4 #marketing
And this other guy who pulled out f<3king Age of Empires
And all doubt about cheaters were gone
Epic is actually smart
well, strategy game reused some assets without disclosing them
menu system was obvious but if you don't discose the obvious bits, who knows what else you reused
Yeah that rps thing was a bit shady
starts fingerpointing ๐
I mean it looked like it was just a few assets and perhpas a tutorial bunged together ๐
But let's be honest, he did a great job adjusting things for the theme
But who knows, it could be legit
I don't mind reusing menu and using tutorials
but if you use existing stuff, they would need to be mentioned
hey i disclosed my crappy menu ๐
The trick is to cheat without cheating
You need to be a liar, but an honest liar, people respect that.
๐
He obviously had a strategy game in his Library, but adjusting all the stuff for the jam, I still give him probs
and my menu was only like 20% left of the original ๐
I don't think people who do it honestly get less points, I mean Derzo won, probably one of the most honest submission... I think ๐
i might as well not disclose anything , im not gunna win anyways ๐
I didn't mean you couldn't win by doing it right
So, what are "less points"?
It's not like there is ranking or something, you either win, or you dont
^^
I just said by picking winners from people who don't play by the rules lowers the chances to win
it should be obvious
as that already happens all the time
of course you can still win but you need to work twice as hard when playground is not even
you could go solo and make it 3x times harder ^^
that's the plan
but so far, no one came up with a good solution for an "online gamejam"
and usually just run out of time with my ambitious plans because of it
except everyone streams their s<3t ๐
I can speak on behalf of me and @pearl roost: As someone who makes their gamejam games from scratch, we find it pretty discouraging seeing people who has already made a game and just shove the theme into it. And then goes even on to win. It kinda sucks.
Then again, there's not much we can do about it.
That's right, you can't proof how much time someone put in
I like a man that's honest about his lying, but never lie about about being honest
This is the way of the cheater
I trust Epic and if they pick a black sheep, at least it looks good in the highlight reel ;P
@glass fossil are you hinting you didn't actually make the chicken? ๐ฆ
chicken meter was a lie!
nah I definitely made that chicken, which is why it has a missing face on it's back ><
only realized after submitting
there is a tiny sliver where I forgot to put a face
didn't see any missing bits ๐
yea you can only see it from very specific angles that aren't visible in the game
worked as designed then
๐
f<3k these cheaters, I'm out, need to check out my aimbot for Widowmaker, going for Grandmaster, peace ๐
^ an honest liar if I've ever seen one. godspeed
I still don't get the 2nd part of what you said before, welp, can always argue with "english is not my native language"
What do you think would be the most unfair gamejam prizes?
That's not unfair. Just torture.
credits for the game maker asset store
last megajam main prize was pretty unfair
What was that, the Tiki?
I wished they would have done smaller prizes so they could be split with the team
yeah
Ah yeah, well, there was more incentive to participate then
Alex joked about dev kits
As prizes.
For these quarterly ones.
Well, I am assuming joking. But maybe not.
if they were VR headsets, that would make more sense
but devkits for consoles you never planned to dev for would be weird
Um, no I meant rigs
A book on how to use Unreal for the winner of an Unreal gamejam is really unfair to the winner.
Heh, Unreal books are poop atm
Yeah
I have read almost all of them
That's the whole point, and why it's unfair
yup
Heh, I just bought one not too long ago.
Which one?
"Learning C++ by Creating Games with UE4"
Yes
Playstation 3 dev kit + unity license?
Because you already have the knowledge to make fixes on your own
Ue4cpp api undergoes quite a bit of change every release or so
wasn't that book the free book on packtpub?
It is almost stupid to make a cpp book
It would be outdated by the time it got piblished
I was hoping I'd learn more about C++ in a familiar UE4 environment, because I know how UE4 mostly works.
Right
I mean, did you enjoy the book overall?
It was fine. Nothing super awesome though.
For me anyway.
ah, it was the free one
yeah, that was terribly outdated
I do like seeing how drastic people are when it comes to using Cpp in UE4
Not using standards
Totally butchering classes
I read the How to make an RPG in Unreal one
And was like wtf is this shit
He did some crazy things.
I like when Epic actually does Cpp streams
Will there be a jam this month?
no, but Victor is hosting an unofficial jam
So, most of you have already heard, but perhaps not, that Epic's #ue4jams are no longer being held on a monthly basis for a variety of reasons. For those who competed or at least tried to compete on a monthly basis, this is a pretty sad outcome. Epic's official #ue4jams will be held (until further notice) in March, June, September (Megajam) and finally December.
But, just because Epic is no longer holding it officially, it does not mean the community cannot come together and hold their own
Why isnt this in the channel topic yet? ๐
@glass fossil cough
lol
Done. Will update again to remove the first message after a day just in case stragglers are unaware
Hello Everyone
I am one of the local organizers for the annual Global Game Jam in Lagos, Nigera
Nigeria
Our local game jam site kicks off a bit early
on the 17th, 3 days earlier than the scheduled 20th on the global calendar
the 3 days have been scheduled for talks, presentations and demo's
I have scheduled one of those days to cover Unreal Engine tutorials and presentations
though I do have some videos from youtube to present our local attendants
I would like someone to call in our jam center and just talk to the attendees about their experience using Unreal Engine
@sour trail you don't have your own experiences to share?
Nah
My pc is quite limited with its graphic card
so I have not been able to use Unreal Engine 4
I am however familiar with the Unreal Interface
and my past experience has been with UDK
@rigid fog, can you help with this?
No idea TBH, I can't plan out that far ahead, too many moving parts as is, I have other priorities to ensure get accomplished first. Sorry. But you can ask again that week if you haven't found anyone.
ok, I am open to anyone really
if anyone is interested, they can post here
and then we will discuss the timing for the Skype call
I wish I was good enough to take part in a game jam. Regrdless, @masterxeon#3869 I wish you all the best hosting yours!
maan i was gonna do this ue4 gamejam too, just read about it only being in march, june, september and dec.
maybe for the best though, I did get a little burned out doing them frequently
@quiet thistle Never heard of you in a jam recently though?
done like 6 this past year
Also, the jam this month starts next week Friday 12PM EST.
I got honorable mention once a few months back
yeah i noticed that unofficial one. I might do it, been kinda bored lately.
but honestly i dont really feel like doing another one by myself. I also dont feel like gathering up a team... so if anyone wants a programmer
pm me
Or not
You can follow the directions in the thread
Many potential teammates are there waiting
hm yeah I guess I'll post there later. its late over here, 3 AM
That Central time
yeah
why did the official montly jams stop ?
Lots of reasons
https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?133153
Unofficial monthly jam starts next Friday. There will be prizes and a few special categories to compete in.

@glass fossil u still wunna jam?, things got changed up a bit..
friday after the stream
friday after the thursday stream
its not after that stream anymore, click the link in the channel topic ๐
Right. This is mainly a test to see if the regulars like the shorter time frame and/or can submit something while lowering their scope even more. While obviously a day and a half being taken away may feel like a punishment or unfair to some. I am hoping that the majority will feel more energized and focused in the time crunch. One of the key techniques to game jams has always been about keeping in scope anwyay, so this will be a pretty good test to those who have never done a 48 hour game or one hour one ;)
I have some particle emitters to create tehn
then*
With @digital fern 's face
๐
Tbh, i participated in a ONE HOUR jam the other month...
And I was shocked at wtf people came up with
Haha well a set time frame can boost productivity
I mean, people try to make this one hour game, when it doesnt have to be
Just one solid level
All it takes to win
Best thing about it is small levels can be super unoptimised and the player would not even know
so no need to do any refined work xD
Right, tbh, anyone trying to optimize in a game jam before completing their mechanics is silly
Anyway. I am also hoping for new faces with it just being two days, devs may be more inclined to participate. We'll see.
last slack jam had 5 teams so dont get ur hopes up ๐
5 teams is better than 0 ;)
Also, don't forget to sign up on the discord channel if you are participating.
You will have to submit your links on there.

-|-
/\
kinda cool you are doing the uue4jam btw @rigid fog
Someone's got to do it. A lot of devs looked forward to it, even if they couldn't participate, they knew it was going to be monthly, and there would be another chance the next month.
Obviously with only 4 official jams a year now, that cuts down on their chances, because if they miss one to work, well, there's a chance that they'll miss out on them all
yea, fo sho
cant say i like the idea of fancy carrots dangle in front of me when i cant reach em either :/
big prizes wil add more frustration than motivation for me ..
@stable kiln can't reach what?
Do you mean, because you think you can't win a jam?
And won't get a chance at those super prizes?
Heh, who knows.
Maybe they'll be a lot more like you and they won't do as well and then you will come up with something crazy good because everyone else slacked off
And bam, you won one.
Don't give up so easily ๐
Not everyone can perform at their best all the time.
last I checked Victors thread doesn't go into the changes to the official jams, but essentially jams run by epic will only be four times a year now
March, June, September, December
yup, just read that
September will be the Epic Mega Jam
should have read before asking a question
did epic provide reasons somewhere visible to the public?
i expect it would take a bit of time out of their employees workday to organise and judge entries
so what would happen is that every 4 or so jams they'd get a lot of participation, with dips in between
it was also incredibly hard to get universities to be interested for anything but the mega jam
so Alex is attempting to make each one count for more, also allows them to consolidate prizes
so that winners get even bigger stuff
I hate one week jams
@glass fossil did they tell that?
I kinda fast forwarded the last weeks stream so I might have missed something
I was under impression they didn't tell any details yet on how the jams will be held
ah found it
I must have missed that part before ๐
[12:46 AM] UnrealAlexander: Yes
[12:46 AM] UnrealAlexander: That's the September Jam now
[12:46 AM] Alice R ใValkrysaใ: so then can we assume that non-mega jam will still be 3.5 days?
[12:46 AM] UnrealAlexander: Correct```
Monthly #uue4jam starting this Friday! Details: https://goo.gl/mW51ew Prizes: SOMA, Vermintide, Project CARS + more #ue4 #gamedev #ue4jam

Me too :)
Hey, where can I request to join a team for the upcoming game jam?

Thanks @rigid fog
Switcharoo!
Two teams swap games halfway through the jam and finish the other's game.
@rigid fog Are they not doing an Official one for January this month? I haven't been paying much attention the past couple of months.
@dusky vessel they are not
Did they give a reason at all or was it just not announced?
"to not overwork jammers"
Oh I see... but what other Unreal jams are there apart from this unofficial community one? I feel bad about the idea of joining an itch.io jam to do Unreal stuff because everybody else is doing 2D or basic Unity things...
Not that I'm super good at Unreal though
also
UnrealAlexander: Alice nailed it: March -> June -> September -> December
so, next official UE4 jam on March
Sept is next megajam
oh right, this channels topic says that too ๐
I wish those titles were more obvious, I never notice or even look at them on my own
me either
Jams are the only way for me to poop out a finished project, sadly. For everything else, the project size grows beyond my ability to organize and manage so I never finish it.
deadlines are good
that was main reason why I attended all game programming courses at uni
I did those only to make game projects with deadline, didn't really care for the courses themselves (didn't attend lectures)
I was the complete opposite kind of student as you @small fern
well, one course was an exception as it was mainly about talks from gamedev industry folks
that was interesting
well, school group projects do suck
but I did many solo there
as it was often easier
but it was nice to have the projects around
pls no memes
Is there a consistent day each month when the jams (official and unofficial ) take place? Always seems to be around the middle of the month.
Want to try and plan ahead this year ๐
First unofficial ue4 jam is tomorrow to my knowladge
So I think the official jam gets the theme announced the second week of the month during the thrusday stream (not sure tho)
hmm yeah. going back over 2016's jams it looks like that was the case for almost all of them. Thanks!
No think the unofficial one starts to.morrow :)
Yeah tomorrow, ty for confirming ๐
@rigid fog did provide a link to his discord for the unofficial jam. I think you have to check for information and submit entries there.
is the theme already announced?
Theme will be announced at that countdown on the stream
Awesome.
@rigid fog Looking forward to the game jam.
@faint magnet Good, should be interesting. I'll be going over some quick little reminders/rules and then the theme, shouldn't take too long.
@rigid fog will the theme also be put up on the official ue4 forum thread?
Nope
so watching the stream is mandatory?
I read the question differently
I read it as your thread, on the official forums
At the very least participants will need to be in the discord chat
Because that's the only place I am accepting submissions for now.
I'll post the theme over there for sure. Maybe over here I guess.
I suppose I could do it over the forums, whatever.
as long as the theme ends up here I think it'll be good

@glass fossil @rigid fog that is what I meant by official forum thread. Thanks.
@faint magnet Oh ๐
I dunno about accepting submissions only on discord
it means people who do not attend can't try the games themselves if they want to
(unless they join the discord group for that but it's unlikely)
Could just be done on a google spreadsheet, and then also posted to the discord (or not)
True true, didn't think about that
โฒ
@glass fossil https://goo.gl/vJXMDK
Not sure this is the right place to ask, but still, not sure where else to post. Would anyone be interested in teaming up for the upcoming game jam?
You may have better luck on the jam discord server, people are teaming up over there
@potent sluice Isn't this the jam discord server? Sorry, really, pretty new to discord.
This is a discord used for basically any gamejam, however as there is no official gamejam this motnh, @rigid fog started his own gamejam <3! He requires you to submit it to his server, so he can keep track of evertyhing @faint magnet more info and server link can be found here: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?133153. January #uue4jam THEME: Goodbye Clone
yay
@rigid fog how many people are you expecting for this jam ?
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
If it's only my team that submits, it's a win
๐
But, I can see maybe 5-10 submissions
awesome, good luck man! considering participating, but i'm terrible with ideas
@nova oxide Sometimes the most terrible ideas are the best ones
vr poop flinging simulator here i come!
@rigid fog wasn't about government clones or something at the first ?
They wanted it reverted

@glass fossil something tells me you are not jamming
in my soul I am
with Unity ๐
he said only rule is to use Unreal Engine
and after that he said no rules
and then he said there's a rule you have to submit before deadline
nothing is true, everything is permitted, this is the way of the assassins creed
except you must use unreal
yep, that thread has been completely dead since
I'm about to start streaming my work on the unofficial jam if anyone cares to watch :)
https://www.twitch.tv/shaunbanshee
Still in doubt if I'm going to join in on this jam
Here's my submission for the Unofficial jam:
https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B6OUPl5nDshSYzVFYWI4UGM1cEU&export=download
Solo submission with some Marketplace assets and pre-made main menu
15 minutes to spare. Phew ๐
we still doing submissions in this channel @rigid fog ?
oooooooh. Thanks
@raw kite What's your plan for it?
Yes
Well, I'm never putting in any effort into any game jam with physical prizes ever again. Got a notice that my "swag bag" has arrived in my country and... FedEx wants 70+ euros to handle customs for me or the customs office wants me to deal with hours of paperwork and nonsense and pay a slightly smaller fee. Neither of which are things I particularly want to do. I'm considering just letting them send it back.
@carmine kindle Was it a special prize or your standard swag bag?
Just a normal one
Well... in that case, not to demean @ruby cradle 's wonderful prizes
I'd probably not pay that 70
:p
I'm about to deal with simillar nightmare
Yeah, that's my thinking too
I bet if you yell at @ruby cradle enough he might do something, maybe
just got email from fedex about handling customs
But for 70, he can probably like send you 6
Well it's my customs office being the problem really. Those bastards.
posted that in lounge erlier
I just got email from fedex about dealing with customs.... holy sh*t. I have to register at customs to get some number, send them list of thing that are in the package with description of what material are they made of, send how much does the shipping cost me (which I don't know) and fill another form and add copy of my id. And since the package say the value of those things (t shirt, pen and button) is 50$ I'm probably going to pay 17% tax, because tax doesn't apply only on packages under 25$. You would think, that we live in a modern world, where all this crap could be handled more elegantly.
but yeah, it's the way customs work. It's such a stupid system
maybe it would help to list smaller prices
List a value of $0
$
WHOA damn
@sweet flame Ok, I had seen there was a holdup here and the shipping department was not able to find it, but if that's what happened, I can see if we can have that paid off
Pinging them now to see how we pay for it or send you funds
@ruby cradle Don't worry about it. The customs thing is not your fault, it's just the way it works.
Yeah, but we have a budget through Epic
I haven't actually been billed anything yet
It's not like it's my money
just sent the forms today
OH HO HO HOOOO
As it turns out we have paid them already for this and they are probably just daft
So, it's getting late here and the staff is leaving, but we're calling them in the morning
Bohrium had more serious situation happening
a little bit up
That's the same situation
yeah, but If I'M bill it'll be like 10$ or something like that. Nothing serious. And that's if.
waiting to hear from them
So there is clearly an issue where either we didn't pay and thought we did, or they didn't get updated
But all of the swag we send should be covered
I don't think you can pay for it
Yeah, all the duty is paid on it, so customs should just push it through I think
But I may be totally wrong because that's just here maybe?
if there is a package from outside EU (above 22โฌ) are charged local tax
I think there is different rate for gifts, or something like that
I never had anything sent from outside EU that was above 22โฌ, so I'm new to that too ๐
Maybe it's all ok and they just needed the form that let's fedex handle the customs, idk.
@ruby cradle I don't want to be ungrateful or anything. I was just surprised about the process of how customs work in my country
Oh no, I don't think anyone is ungrateful. I'm more annoyed at the customs folks.
The most difficult are the russian ones... I can barely get anything in there
In my country (fi) you only pay customs for the price you paid for the item
I can't get anything there
Many times I have had to find people who are outside of russia to give the prize to and have them send it through a friend
If it is truly a gift, I dont think they can force customs for it
US -> Russia mail is so hard right now due to politics
We also have nice online custom service here, you just fill the form online and pay online the fee if needed
It's not tedious to handle directly on customs either but it takes time
I don't really have an option to handle it directly. Would have to drive 400km to Prague ๐
Huh
Wow
You sure there isnt like small side office anywhere near?
I already sent everything they wanted, so now I'll just wait for their response
nope
It arrives to Prague and that's where it's holded
You could maybe somehow make them to move it elswhere, but I don'T know how
and they would probably charge you for it
Around here it doesnt matter where it arrives, you can have it transferred to nearest office without extra fee
Done that couple times in past when I didnt live in capital area
I usually order stuff from EU countries and that works differently.
Or buy some small stuff from china and that rarely exceeds 22โฌ
China packets dont usually get stuck in customs anyway unless it is big or heavy packet in my experience
They always stamp $10 on top
OP
this is why i try never to win anything
if you make bad games you dont run into these problems
๐ค
#NeverStopMakingBadGames
Lmao
I didn't have any problems with the swag delivery this time
Took me most of a day dealing with customs, but finally got my swag bag now. ๐
Yeah, in the end I had to pay VAT off of the marked value. Which was like 14 Euros.
The bigger trouble was trying to tell them I didn't actually have a receipt for ordering it, because receiving something for free from a company is an outlandish idea and they don't know how to handle that.
well, that's actually on Epic
not on customs
if epic would give you 0 USD receipt for the items, you could hand it to the customs
of course customs want the receipt as everyone just marks things with lower value / gift to avoid customs
they know it and that's why they want the receipt
Well they understood it eventually, after about the third email I sent them about it.
i had a problem when i won the ssd and the jam at once and they accidently marked the t shirt as 300 value so the value of package was stated at over 1000 and customs stopped it, epic fixed the problem real quick for me though i think i recieved it within a week after i told epic
Y'all excited for the GGJ?
@small fern Basically, that's my strat going forward. Being honest has not helped our shipments at all
@ruby cradle well, it's still honest if you give receipt that the person who got the goods didn't pay a dime to the sender about them ๐
as it's true
I can understand customs as those people probably don't know anything about the arrangements here, they still have to deal with lots of people who genuinely try to avoid paying the customs
Oh yeah
I know that on some countries you still have to pay for the value still
even if you didn't pay anything yourself
I'm still following up on this payment stuff btw, I want to make sure no one is stuck
Oh man, I hope that Falcon NW Tiki PC didn't get stuck ๐ฆ
yeah, that would suck
there's still one video online (but it's in finnish) where some finnish guy won the biggest prize on lottery but he lived aboard by the time it happened (in Sweden), by the time that happened they could somehow doublecharge the taxes for the winnings in such case as the prize paid into another country
it was absurd case
guy who won it, had to pay more taxes than the prize he won was worth
and lost everything he ever owned
bit extreme example what can happen when you win something ๐
Does anyone know of any Unreal-eligible game jams happening right now or starting soon? Because the itch.io ones are the only place I know of to look and all of their jams are either other-engine-specific or not feasible (e.g. university class or club doing their own inhouse thing)
@dusky vessel GGJ
Or mine
but that's not for another few weeks
GGJ starts tonight though
Yeah I wanted to do your thing last week or whatever but I was part of another jam coincidentally that overlapped it beforehand
Yeah we entered it. idk about any prize or whatever because that's not why I do it
I looked into GGJ because I heard about it just a few hours ago and the closest one to where I live had an application period and already started it earlier this afternoon
Good good
?
Um, as far as I know...you can do GGJ by yourself
You can apply online to make your team
That's news to me
Now, it may be location based though
I'll look into it in a bit
I've only ever done it at SCAD
But I know we do our team registration online
Won't be doing it this year because well, damn professors are not taking any late assignments... and so there's no point in me failing any classes for one game jam
It was much easier to do them in my other years
Not as a Senior though ;)(
I can't believe I've actually touched Paper 2D... Tried so hard to avoid it since UE4 went free :3
Welp, at least it was an experience, but no thanks, not again ๐
@somber hazel It's not the best out there, but at least it's something
I try to complain as much as possible whenever possible, but I am only one voice
At least it's working, but it misses features and I had to do some workarounds that were pretty dirty , which were also mentioned on answerhub, but welp, no love for Paper2D :D. To be fair, I would also not focus on this type of games ;P
But you know, sometimes you end up as programmer in a group of new artists and they all specialize in 2D ๐
@ruby cradle following your convo from saturday, when you guys shipped me a vive I was really surprised, because my country DOES make you pay the value regardless, but they said you guys had left a note to charge it to epic
or.. something along those lines
going off what @small fern said about some countries making you pay it
Hi, i am new to this, can anyone drop a hint or help with starting up the game? I have been through couple of discussion groups and posts but had no luck finding the solution for my initial crash of the game after i launch it.
I want to share our game Nami made at GGJ17.
We had a team of 6, here in Brazil, Curitiba. We got the best game made with unreal and best game by jammers vote.

@celest cradle awesome work!
Hope to you see you guys doing UE4jams every month also!
Check pinned msgs
@celest cradle great job~
@celest cradle #blender masterrace ๐
@stable kiln haha for sure
@loud basalt Good to hear! Yeah, I want to make sure these get paid for by us (or reimbursed at the least)
@ruby cradle That's awesome! ๐
Hey guys I found a Game Jam specifically for Unreal: http://jams.gamejolt.io/TheUnrealJam
Where does high quality games come from? The Unreal Engine of course! It makes things so Realistic! But have you tried it before? Make a Game using the Unreal Engine!
It's got 6 days left. Anyone want to get together and make something?
Game Jams are the only thing that motivate me to actually finish projects, sadly. I just want an excuse to make something, that's all.
Just wait for mine next month if that's really all that motivates you
And...gamejolt jams?
THey trying to be the next Itch?
I just googled game jams because everything on the itch.io calendar was either more than a month long, was about local irl stuff, or were specific for a particular engine.
@ruby cradle Swag arrived! ๐ And so far they did not want any money from me ๐ Thanks a lot ๐
@ruby cradle Even better than I imagined ๐
Great!
Man, everyone got some cool winter gear and backpacks. OP
A racing game where you drive trucks to score points.
That is incredibly tame, what is wrong with you unrealbot?
A strategy game where you sell androids in a secret research facility.
A puzzle game where you control bread to save the environment in cyberspace but you can't see anything.
@dusky vessel @DragonFyZex#5821 i could do a few simple models and stuff, but its a month long jam with 5 days left ๐

Hello guys, I'm programmer & I searching for a team to join for next Epic Game Jam...
Why wait?

So, most of you have already heard, but perhaps not, that Epic's #ue4jams are no longer being held on a monthly basis for a variety of reasons. For those who competed or at least tried to compete on a monthly basis, this is a pretty sad outcome. Epic's official #ue4jams will be held (until further notice) in March, June, September (Megajam) and finally December.

@glass fossil The title of this channel seems outdated ๐
If Victors Feb jam is already planned I'd be happy to update it. But I'm currently unaware of his jam details.

any news about the dates of the jam in march?
I crave an excuse to sit down and poopsock out a video game project quickly
it should be the second Thursday of March as per usual
thanks
hello everyone, im a newbie who's willing to attend some gamedev competitions
what is gamejam?
and how can i take part in it?
various jams have various rules, but generally you make a game from scratch in a time period that has to follow theming outlined at the start of the jam
can you recommend a jam
ue4 does a quaterly jam, I think
Victor does a monthly jam
For the UE4 community.
Another jam might be GDL
^^^ then there are these
thx ๐
np happy jamming
An action game where you clobber tombs on a recently discovered planet.
!gameidea
A simulation game where you raise tigers to find the cure for a terminal illness at the top of a volcano.
Anyone want to work together for the game jam next month? Send me a PM
there is a game jam next month?
i checked out the link above and realized the more appropriate question is, which one?
@summer storm I doubt there will be unofficial game jam parallel to official one
whole idea of the unofficial ones was to fill in the gaps since epic didn't do monthly game jams anymore
I haven't seen any recent official info on official game jams but everyone expects there to be one on March
@ruby cradle can you deny or confirm that? ๐
awww, he escaped
I can swear he was on green when I asked
anyway
I think the only reason why there's no announcement for the forthcoming game jam yet is that they want to announce the whole deal at once
if it were up to me, I wouldn't at least announce the possible prizes that much in beforehand, because that have always put people on the move before jam has even started
people making jam games prior to jam used to be more of an issue with megajam but it could now affect all epic jams as there's only few around
why not link the actual page instead?
jam entry is made with ue4, so at least I'd think it's related to the channel
any game jams happening right now?
train jam starts on thursday, if anyone is going
@modest garden Most of those jams are local-specific or engine-specific, though. Otherwise I'd be doing jams left and right
@austere glade I just looked at it -- that sounds really cool, actually. Too bad I'm nowhere near Chicago
I really don't understand this Weekly Hour Game Jam though. How is it possible to make anything in just 1 hour? I mean you could maybe do gameplay in 1 hour... but then how do you do the UI and whatnot? That's gotta take an hour as well. Do you just spend the whole week planning out the design and then crank it all out in one hour, throwing it all away and starting over it you fail the challenge?
an hour seems kind of naff, you can barely get anything done in an hour
it's enough time to string together some really basic blueprints and that's about it
if you do minimalistic UI that you've DONE BEFORE, it's doesn't take many minutes
but yeah, doing everything in one hour is silly
or even 2 hours
it's like speedrun for the engine, you can't explore anything new, you have to know each thing you use really well beforehand
that pretty much takes away all learning experiences from it, and doesn't really provide you much IMO
most of us don't speedrun games either
I feel really bad because the only time I can make any progress or sit down and grind out work on a project is if I'm doing it for a game jam
I wish I could find these game jam things more often
Have you checked ludust?
Hi everyone.
We are a pair of game jam artists on the lookout for experienced coders / scripters/ blueprinters for the next upcoming UE4 jam.
When it comes to jams we are long timers with over 15 entries under our belt, multiple 1st places and sponsor awards.
Our latest jam endavours can be viewed here -
http://jakayaki.com/game-jams
http://slapunas.artstation.com/pages/projects-i-worked-on
Our skillset covers entire pipeline for both characters and environment that includes:
Concepting > modelling > texturing > rigging > animation > Anim blueprint setup (Anim blending etc etc.)
Currently we are on the lookout for equally passionate coders wishing for a team to make a next killer jam game and, if we are a good fit, possibly work together on future projects / contests.
You can pm me directly or drop me an email at Slapunas@gmail.com
Bear in mind we are going to reply only to individuals who can show examples of their previous work.
That's it! We are super excited and looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers!
What's the date for the upcoming jam?
Does anyone have a source for the game jams no longer being monthly? Was that said somewhere?
@slate salmon it's the 2nd pinned message on this channel (by Derzo)
@dusky vessel That's victors thing, I was hoping for something official
You're right I am stupid
@slate salmon Alexander confirmed it in Dec... Also no official gam jams since is pretty good proof it's not monthly anymore :p
Not sure if he mentioned that on some stream as well
@Tyler#3861 you'll have to look through the history of this channel
@slate salmon for posts from Unreal Alexander
there is also a little bit in a stream
don't remember which stream though
It was the first community stream of 2017 if I remember correctly
@slate salmon 5:10
@[IT] Steyr A.K.A Rapid#7372 I tried checking out Ludust a while ago but unfortunately it seems that all of the Unreal projects listed there are long dead and were each posted at least 6 months ago
.. can't mention
I feel like I'm twiddling my thumbs, going through official livestream tutorial VODs until the next game jam. ๐
oh
30th
I was expecting it earlier ๐
ha
Best Game Under 100mb
it has returned!
wish they would have split the prizes between major and special categories though
like give SSDs to major and houdini licenses to special cat winners
To be honest, I had expected better/more prizes
well, main cat prizes are nice
they actually give SSD + houdini to each teammember on winning teams
SSD's are nice.
I didn't even know it was possible to package an Unreal project such hat it's under 100MB. I thought the base, barebones thing was ~750MB
splitting up the top 3 into 3 main cat winners makes little sense to me
if u dont like the theme there are still 5 categories that have nothing to do with the theme? ๐
@dusky vessel you should talk to @small fern he has gotten down to 20mb I think
that's bit fo an exaggeration tbh
I only got into 25 MB on blank project
@dusky vessel default fps template takes over 300 MB packaged
That is black magic afaik
I mean, if you just package it with default settings
confusing
are there winners and then additional winners for the special categories
and the special cats dont get additional prizes, just the swag boxes
hopefully no one goes for those and i can pick up a swag box
@glass fossil can you update the pinned message?
Wait, can you go for Best Game Under 100mb AND Best Android Mobile Game? I don't think you can, but I don't see a rule that makes it clear.
i prefer game honey
@somber hazel in past they said in rules that you could technically win multiple categories
but I somehow doubt they'd do that
so it would kinda suck if you would have qualified for the top-3 but won special cat ๐
in fact, on megajam, some special category winners didn't make much sense, it seemed like they gave those to project that almost won the main one and only vaguely fit into special category
@ashen meadow did you read the post? ๐ each member in 3 winning teams will get SSD, houdini, swag and Panda Studios assets
special category winners get Panda Studios assets only
oh snap
it was me who didn't read ๐
they mentioned the swag beforehand
and now that I read it again, I see that houdini swag is another swag
so main winning teams will get 2x swag
also, main category winners get highlighted on launcher but special category ones don't
seems kinda odd since they could easily arrange space
speciality categories exist, but you'd still be judged on use of theme, so you can't just throw anything up there
I've noticed the dates are absent, but I assume it's running from Thursday to Sunday as normal?
@maiden loom In Unreal Engine game jam tradition, we'll be kicking this one off and announcing the theme on the livestream on March 30th and giving participants a bit more than 3 days to create and submit an awesome game built in the engine.
aha, cheers
so normal way as always ๐
aye good to know
unfortunately it is also my birthday, so chances are once again I will not be able to take part
chances are I won't, but it is also my 30th
The Sptring #ue4jam has been announced for March 30th to April 2nd!
Theme: TBD
For more details - https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?138407-Spring-ue4jam
you heard it folks, theme is "Track before detect"
TBD is an abbreviation often meaning in ordinary writing "to be discussed" "to be done", "to be defined", "to be decided", "to be determined", "to be deleted", etc. It may also refer to:
The three-letter code for Three Bridges railway station
Douglas TBD Devastator, an torpedo aircraft from World War II
TBD Records
Track-before-detect, a method used in radar technology
Triazabicyclodecene, organic soluble very strong base for various catalytic organic reactions
Torpedo Boat Destroyer, a type of naval vessel...
I like Torpedo Boat Destroyer and Triazabicyclodecene too
lol
slightly tempted to make a game jam template
people use all kinds of third party menus etc anyway
what I haven't seen though is that someone would make a game unrelated shell and publish it before the jam so anyone could use it
IMO that would be fair to all (vs mention that one used his/her own template that nobody else can get)
@small fern I like the way you think
downside of course is, that I'd be giving out a template that can build 50MB game out of the box ๐
