 can you make me a video game?
:8ball: Outlook good.
Another 10 days of blood sweat and tears (but mostly blood), submitted to Mashup jam
Haven't seen anyone in the city for days. Everything is dark except for the glowing vending machines. And all I can hear is these damned groaning zumbebs. Gotta find the train and get out of here.
only 3 days till the unreal jam results come in
cant wait to pretend I feel happy for someone else
(my hopes of winning arent high anyways)
Wish they put the scores someplace so you could see how they thought everyone did
I am starting to worry that this game is still on the submission list.
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1675249
It was submitted in the first day, and has gameplay video days before the jam started.
Also a steam page and a whole devlog well before anything. With the same gameplay as submitted.
it really should have been removed and I can't recall the reason given why it wasn't
ive seen a couple other games up there that i also think were created before the jam (tho that one is prob the most obvious)
It's about participation and experience. (At least for me). It's like thing that you started and finished and being part of something, at this point is this whole community
yeah, i didnt join because I thought I had good chances of winning
bro 23 ppl are waiting here for the stream to start in 19 hours ๐ https://youtu.be/g6UsRLy2yyM
In the epic conclusion of yet another fantastic MegaJam, this Thursday weโll be sitting down to announce, discuss & play the winning entries. Join us as we celebrate the incredible games our community has put together!
ANNOUNCEMENT POST:
https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/inside-unreal-2022-epic-megajam-winners-announcement/677638
make it 24
5am my time, nice , perfect lol, not. I go to bed 2am.Watch the replays as always ๐
2 hours to go!
wooooooo
22m left...
pages are now unlocked - if you wanted to upload a new version ๐
I know I did:
https://ambershee.itch.io/the-kybalion/devlog/444103/post-jam-non-rtx-version-now-available
same, didn't show on the reel
I got a shoutout, which was more than I was expecting, but no, didn't appear in the reel, lol
My big question now is how do I get better?
Mine neither not show up on reels. I'm feel sorry for myself. Because I have ability to make projects that win this year. But I didn't knew about direction to go, or the judge would like to see
Enjoyed the stream, but the state of the title at time of submission doesn't even reflect where we are going anymore, haha.
Can't even tell the game is in the stream due to so much changed.
https://www.tiktok.com/@vanthsdemise
@dim stream @faint dune @maiden loom I think maybe it's select randomly. It may not be confirm but that can let us not disappointed too much.
Yeah they sad the reel was like 16 hours long from all the trailers xd. They just play it random.
Congrats to all the winners!! ๐ฅณ๐ฅณ ... And hey congrats to all us non winners too haha ๐ฅณ I saw so many amazing games it would have been a nightmare for the judges to pick the best ones
I think participation goodies would be nice
also same game winning multiple times gives less chance for new / weaker participants
(although the winning games deserve it)
The better question is, did you learn something? These jams are simply opportunities to skill up, challenge yourself and build up your portfolio/experience. Yea winning is awesome, but the real value is in the intangible things you gain from the experience. You always gain something, even if it's not a shiny new GPU. ๐
@trail trellis I have that answer for question already when I decide to join the Jam. So that why i asked that next question after Jam
this was my first playable game & first game jam
I was satisfied that I was able to actually make this game & submit on time
but the stream, blogs etc has no mention of the non winning games feels like my submission is non existent
@dim stream Yes, Winner is something prove our skill and if have it will a big motivation for next step
Not only just for a price
winning is not necessary
but something to encourage would be nice
For context I have won twice, and yet most times my work barely sees the highlight reel so trust me I have been here before! Embrace the opportunity. Keep working on your project if you think you can make it better. Use it to start a new one! Take inspiration from other's entries (try and replicate something interesting, ask them how they did it etc).
I agree. But winning also better for portfolio. As we see there is no encourage here and we must accept that and go forward.
@trail trellis Sorry but you can tell me which one is your?
It's actually why I wanted to reply. You left some kind comments on mine. It was this: https://nocturnalarts.itch.io/all-above-soon-below
@trail trellis Yes, I actually love your game. And it does show up on stream. I think you game may be win "Army of One".
As I said my weakness now is my vision. The project win this year we probably can do it with our skill but there is something not right.
And I don't know. That why I ask how do I get better? Of course I will keep going forward
But I totally lost
I sent you a friend request just so we don't spam the channel haha. ๐
looked through your portfolio of games and I remember these ๐
department of truth correction broke me
Hahaha. Yea it does that. That was... special.
I have stumbled into your games too, they have been good inspiration! ๐
The cat-earth society was a masterpiece.
fun fact, that artist was on 1st place team this jam
So your team always have someone win the jam since 2019?
We didn't win anything in 2020 ๐
Ah, I see
(And I wasn't on the first place team this year, just the artist)
Your team should be professional and this jam is a right place
It's a long road to go from jamming to getting paid
This jam honestly isn't the best for getting feedback if you didn't win, if you think you're spinning your wheels you might want to check into Ludum Dare or even some of the smaller jams on itch where the organizers stream the entries
Yes, this is very helpful. I just think this Unreal MegaJam is not the right place for me anyway
The megajam is only once a year so plenty of time to refine your approach between ๐
It's nice seeing what's possible in a week specifically with Unreal
honestly, it's all just practice and experience - don't be hard on yourself, when there are 500 entries, even being mentioned is almost like winning the lottery
I've been doing this for fifteen years and this year all I got is a shout out, which is absolutely fine and more than I was expecting ๐
solo is literally hard mode ๐
I just looked at your entry this year
not only do you have to be skilled in multiple disciplines, you have to split time across multiple disciplines
yes, it's absolutely brutal
it doesn't look all that bad though ๐ just more practice and refinement like ambershee said
I think if I had teamed up with artists this year, I'd have probably been in with a decent chance at prizes - I had the whole core game implemented by Monday morning (which is by far the best I've ever done in that regard) - but as a solo entry it isn't enough, there's just so much more to do and I couldn't even vaguely hit the quality / polish bar you can with a bigger team
hey, if you wanna post up your build I'd be happy to give it a try, similarly I'd love it if people could also give me some advice on what I could improve next year!
@blazing quiver Thank you. How do you think about project that winner this year?
This is my build https://vuphan.itch.io/jelly-quest
if people dump their games in there and tag me, I'll try to give them a spin over the weekend and give whatever feedback ๐
I thought that all the winners were great actually ๐ The Solo project was especially inspiring to me, I wanna be able to make stuff like that in 1 week too one day
I'm downloading your game atm I'll make sure to leave you some feedback ๐
@blazing quiver Thank you
But general it's not about the game. It's the idea we go with. Maybe I'm pretty weak to see what the judge and other people will like
I'm totally can make that project which win this year, but I may go wrong direction and couldn't see judge doesn't like my game
part of it is making a guess at what design ideas you'll be able to pull off spectacularly ๐
recognizing limits and strengths
(I am the artist from the 1st place team)
we actually struggled quite a lot with the theme on this. I think we didn't really start making our game until Sunday because we kept being unable to commit to an idea, or we thought that it didn't really match the theme, or we thought that it would be too complicated to understand for a jam game. in the end, we had to pick something just to start moving, but we were still changing it as we went to try to make it simpler to make and simpler for players to understand (it was still too complicated, but we always struggle with that). I was really happy to hear that the judges watched our how to play video because we worried so much that they wouldn't know what they were supposed to do! I always dream of making smaller scope games like yours. ๐
I find it's very difficult to guess how people will react to or like your game, because everyone has such different tastes, and you don't personally know the people you're making a game for. but we always perform better if we find an idea that we like for ourselves and can find passion about
if there's one thing I do like about this jam format, it's less of a popularity contest
lots of games I've never even heard of placing ๐
(having a popular game is nice for getting playtesting feedback though ๐ )
@warped fossil Thank you and congrats to you. I have a same worry player don't understand the game when pick idea. So I choice simple game as you said. But final it's not right
Is there a link to sizzle reel and list of winners? Can't be bothered watching 2.5 hour video today lol
you can see them on the blog post here: https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/presenting-the-winners-of-the-2022-epic-megajam
Thank you ๐
hey it's @maiden loom and @static wind on the blog! ๐
@warped fossil Thank you. I even didn't know that. haha
it's unfortunate that people who don't win don't get feedback, but it's probably a good sign that they wanted to feature you there
Was there a sizzle reel in all that ? Does it feature at a certain point in the livestream? I have looked for it and not seen it.
Basically over the whole stream
Is there a list of winners? Video is too long for me
Oh I see the blog post above now ๐
It's not terribly meaningful feedback even if you do win since no one can put everything they have into a game made in a few days and a lot of it would just boil down to time constraints
I was expecting a proper sizzle reel, in my mind's eye I saw a 4 by 4 or 5 x 5 array of games in a video for about 5 seconds each or something like that to give everyone their few seconds of fame. Most people would have been happy with just that.
what is the next big game jam?
I use this page find it easier to parse than the calendar view https://itch.io/jams/upcoming
Hey everyone just wanted to congratulate all the participants and winners of this year's 2022 megajam. Our game [Bilateral] (link in bio) got featured on the Megajam main page. We didn't win but looks like we're on the right path ;) if anyone wants to collaborate dm me https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/presenting-the-winners-of-the-2022-epic-megajam
Hi folks! Just wanted to know if someone has any info regarding updating our megajam games now
I won the first student place and I'm happy as hell
and just noticed today! I thought that I had lost, like one usually does in gamejams
and I want to push a small bugfix update
you can freely upload new versions etc now
I actually pushed my updated version during the stream ๐
congrats on your win btw, well deserved
Thanks for the tip and thanks the the congrats!
Hey people of MegaJam'22. Congrats to all Participants and Winners. You guys made a lot of amazing games.
To be honest I didn't even thought my game could win anything, so thank you for all the love.
If anyone is interested what came into the all process of making it, there is my blog post a month ago about it on Unreal Forrums.
And again Congrats to all participants!!! ๐ฅณ
If anyone would be interested or have questions about my project I would happy to talk about it or even do the voice chat.
I will upload updated game next week.
Big Love
Hi UE Dev community, decided to dissect and write about mine game for this years Epic Games Mega Jam 2022. was thinking maybe people can find something relating and interesting in my project. So before I begin little disclaimer: All game from Idea to Build was created by me (music, 3d assets, code, animations, rigs etcโฆ), the decision was to t...
Hey guys missed the livestream but so happy that our game Backstage Shenanigans got some love. Looking forward to bug fixing and improving it for the longer run. You guys rock!
You guys deserve more than 1 comment on this one
Another Unreal jam in the bag, 4 days of part time work. These jams are addictive lol https://spwlz.itch.io/the-crossing
My first time doing a jam in mostly C++ working with someone else, was nice not having to worry about .uasset merge conflicts!
And you remind me why I will never use git ever again ๐
you shouldn't get merge conflicts in P4 on account of it not working that way
You talking about git file locking for uassets?
What are the other ways?
that has worse risks of collisions
since all it takes is for two people to move an actor
OFPA is also absolutely terrible for version control, so many small files
much better to use streaming levels
but even then, that only solves the problem for levels
better to use exclusive checkout, there's really no sane reason not to
Yeah conflicts in Blueprint have been the bigger issue for me in UE5 after using OFPA. Like I add in some Wwise event and another person changes the gameplay logic at same time. I've gotten used to communication to reduce the issues but still miss my text merges ๐
I can't afford Perforce and often work in teams of more than 5 people, would be cool to join a project where someone had it set up properly though
Someone enabled git LFS locking on the last project I was on but the integration didn't quite seem to be there yet with UE5, or maybe I didn't have enough practice using it. Maybe this development fork of the UE Git plugin will take care of that in the future, would be cool ๐ https://github.com/SRombauts/UEGitPlugin
Will have to look into streaming levels, thanks!
doesn't mean it's not terrible
operations like syncs and reconciles take a lot longer when you deal with lots of small binary files
Does anyone know how to redeem the rewards from Epic Megajam 2022?
if your team won prizes, an Epic representative, and/or representatives from individual sponsors will contact your team at some point
@thick breach Hey! I was wondering if you were a judge on the Epic MegaJam 2022 and if so, if you could give any feedback on the VR game my team submitted? To be blunt (but hopefully not arrogant), we thought we did a really good job this year, but didn't get any feedback (good or bad) Here is our submission for reference: https://plus2studios.itch.io/butterflies-and-beetles any insight you (or anyone else who sees this) could give would be amazing! Good or bad
Hii @worn hamlet , when are we suppose to get back the DocuSign acceptance form email? We sent the replies a while and just getting a bit worried. Thanks!
Hello everyone! im new to the server, my name is Ellie and im a 2D/3D artist ๐ ive never done a game jam before but it sounds super fun, anyone got any advice about who to do it with and what skills imma need to learn to do it??
You can make a game using only blueprints, since the blueprint system is visually seing the flow of code data and creating complex codes without the need to learn all the therms that you have to Remember of c++
Anyone interested in joining a game jam?

Hello i m looking for a team
The N64 style graphics jam starts tomorrow! Join me for some low poly N64 graphics fun! https://itch.io/jam/winter-n64-space-jam
Hey all, hosting a 2D shooter game jam for $10,000. Starts next month. Hope everyone had a good turkey day yesterday ๐
very awesome project
Anybody knows C++ and looking for a team?
/job volunteer
is anybody doing the Voxel jam ?
We got a game jam hangout
interesting
excited to see this channel begin to come alive~
Me, too!
Mega jam is october right?
Yup
#Nightmares
going to be so hype
@random parcel didn't love our time together in MegaJam?
anyone doing the ue4 gamejam? could use an artist to team up with
MEgajam is gonna be the week of my honeymoon. Epic and their timing! ๐
Assuming it's the 10-14th or whatever that week
I can see participation doubling
I't s a nonstart for me, which is kind of a bummer
Ah, that's a bummer @pale eagle. ๐ฆ
I'm definitely hoping to participate in the MegaJam this year. Was a blast last year.
im #4470
i was confused about the megajam thing... its just an anniversery thing huh?
so i guess not many people are gonna be doing the one this month ๐ฆ
since the mega one is in oct
I don't remember. Did mega jam had longer time limit than normal?
Yep. It lasted for 7 days last year.
That would be nice to try. I always run out of time to polish my games
Yea, me too. I need to try working with a team for a jam
I have a few times, I go to meetups in town and got a few people that way
got a couple people from community college once
but lately no one IRL has been willing
๐ข
hmm with the upcomin megajam mayB i should team this month
is discord less fps heavy than slack? ๐
Did anyone else here attend Splash Jam earlier this year? Or plan to attend it next time around.
Hey there, I'm interested in teaming up with people. I've never taken part in a GJ before but would like to work on 3d or music.
well my art and bp skills aint great and really n00b at collaboration software but im up for a team
We are looking for an art dude for our jam
https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/images/Support/Builds/ReleaseNotes/2016/4_13/image_11.gif
WHAT
Jeremy Ernst and Jurre de Baare are coming on the stream to talk about a lot of the new animation features that are in the 4.13 build of Unreal Engine. They'll be exploring Alembic Vertex Animations, Node Watcher and more! There's so much to cover, we'll be doing a follow-up stream later to show off all of the amazing animation features.
Also in this exciting stream, Alexander will
Mega jam will be really hype, probably will take a few days off work
yeah, I'm considering taking days off work to do it this time
I have contract work, not sure if I will be done until the mega jam
that is always an option
last megajam I worked full time and did the jam xD
when is megajam?
Are there any infos about the next megajam?
no, people are just assuming there'll be another one
I think I've read somewhere that it will happen or at least there are plans
okay, but thats enough to be hyped ๐
think ill go make some food B4 the jam starts ๐
Yep October
I just checked an upload date for my submission
they need to announce it soon if it's gonna happen
by the way today is the release day for Calm Down Stalin, a game originated in one of the past jams
not my game
should be very convenient for the author. done with one game, start the next one immediately
the funhouse jam seems fun, too bad its in berlin ๐
*Hamburg
i'd be willing to do programming if anyone needs one for the upcoming jam
I try to avoid doing that
\o/
\o/
And there it is ๐
woot confirmation~!
yep time to lock off the calendar
heh
@ruby cradle - can we get some clarification on rules (e.g. team sizes)? I assume it's the standard fare?
I hope it's not bigger than 5
that would start to get even more unfair towards smaller teams
I personally think it should be more like 3 max
but that's just me ๐
teams are hard to coordinate, I'm going in by myself
will be 1 year of unreal jams for me, last year megajam was my first
oh I hope it will be a good one
but will not try to force myself into BP land this time
to be honest I kinda hate most of their themes
You don't wanna be the BP Man? ๐
I couldn't get anything done on last jam as UE4 editor kept freezing on BP debugging and every time I stopped playing
and I didn't even do anything special there
I dunno, BPs been a real struggle for me on past few engines, I mainly use c++
I know how to code in BPs since I started using ue4 with them when 4.0 came out
They've gotten a ton better on the BP debug, it runs pretty well now.
no I mean, debugging was completely broken for me
I dunno what's wrong with this setup
if I put breakpoint, it stops
but I can't continue anymore
Like, freezing when you would build/run?
it just freezes everything
nothing responds on the editor for a while
but..
if I right click the UE4 editor icon on taskbar and tell it to close, it responds immeatidly, asking if I want to save unchanged parts
if I just tick the X on top right
it doesn't do anything
obviously, it's not something all people struggle with
Hmmm
my main project is in c++
No issues in c++ right?
there's barely any BPs in it and I can debug everything just fine on VS side
also
my main project works properly on PIE
but last two BP only projects I've done have been pain as PIE lags like no tomorrow
there's obviously some engine side timeout thing going on for..
I guess I should check logs
output window is normal
all in all, next jam I try to do will be in c++ ๐
All C++ , that indeed is plus plus painful
I still have not get used to long compile times
yeh, something is hanging definitely
c++ is way better for many reasons, but I get the appeal people have on BPs
with text based code, you can always save your work
I like BPs because it's easy to see the logic flow when prototyping
and you don't need to wire minutes for loops and equations that take few seconds to type on c++
yeh, there are benefits to that ๐
and since Epic mainly documents BP API, it's easier to approach when you learn new parts of the engine
you can do a C++ project without a source build
C++ API is still pretty bare bones
@maiden loom I know
but I there's something on master I want to include if possible
it's isolated change, shouldn't break anything
Yeah, I agree. I'm with you in that when it comes to the grind of it, C++ is my preference but I've come to really like blueprints. It can just take a little longer to set :)
talking of not finishing jams, it's usually been some editor or engine issue but I guess that's same for every team
I guess my failure there has been that I've always wanted to solve the root cause, instead of working around it
for example, this is one jam I almost finished but didn't have time to finish the art side:
spent 2 days fighting physx bug on constraints on that
Here's my workaround "totally not a fix" solution for you @small fern , put UE on an SSD
they worked fine on leveled surfaces but when I put the table in 7 degree angle, they went bonkers
turned out, physx couldn't handle constraint joints that were just 10 unreal units wide
had to make them bigger, but somehow struggled to find out it was scale that was doing that
I mean it wasn't jittery, it just wents totally nuts
@thin viper I've had UE4 and VS on SSD since 4.2 ๐
I actually did comparison on SSD vs HDD on 4.2 times while building the engine from source
took 17 minutes to build when everything was on SSD
took 45+ minutes when everything was on HDD
didn't expect that huge difference
you should never spend 2 days of a game jam on one problem!
I know
I actually worked around that issue first
I just put the table so it was on 90 degree angle
calculated new gravity value so ball's gravity would be same as on table that was on 7 degree angle
but figured that wouldn't have worked on loops that weren't at same level
so returned to the orignal issue
could have hacked that part too but it would have gotten even messier
also, as physics guy, I was more worried why it didn't work than finishing the jam ๐
haha
figures
that's okay, last time I did a game jam by myself, I spent so much time focusing on atmosphere and some scripted events I completely overlooked the part where the player could just walk off the first edge of the building they came to and land on the end-game volume instantly
and then Allar proceeded to do just that in his stream
hence how I found out!
heh
@scenic venture that's actually fantastic hahaha
he was nice enough to try it again, where he broke it again straight away also. He threw some of my glowing orbs that help you see in the dark, it rolled off the building, and landed on the end-game volume and triggered it because I didn't filter it down to players only
I did really great that jam! ๐
Speaking of jams, i've never done a ajm, and one coming up (the Game Dev League one) will be the first I will be a part of.
they're pretty fun, it really helps you learn to just get things done and not worry so much about little things
^ if you play smart
in general though, what's nice about game jams is that they set strict deadlines, makes you more focused
so... where is our GameJam Voice Channel
who do I need to contact to make this possible? โค
I assume that most teams would make their own private voice channel for their project
but it might be nice to have a few permanent ones
Na, I don't know. We have no passwords on them so they would need to be private somehow.
But you can add yourself as friends, create a Group Chat and call there
Or just create your own small server for that week
It's free after all
you could gather and team up pretty easily
I'm not talking about a channel for people who already have a team
I'm talking about lone wolves like that have no connection whatsoever
*like me
it would push the motivation of all jammers
you act like I should go back to my shelter :3
well you're technically in that channel! You can always move to one of the empty lounges
hm... can someone of the other lone wolves explain what I mean? :3
You guys excited to find out what this month's theme is? ๐
i think you would of gottin a yes but evenyone is already on the stream to find out haha
Only if it's awesome!
There should be a UE4 plugin jam. I'm better at making plugins. Haha
A plugin jam could be fun.
Now that's an idea I like
we wanted to do a tutorial-jam with the ue4 facebook group
but then I got kicked XD
Anyone want to work together for the gamejam? May end up going solo again ;o
maaaaybe
Im a programmer, so you wouldnt need to worry about that
Ive done like, 5 epic gamejams lol
jk 4
I'm not trying to brag, but I more or less know how to do everything outside of good level designing and audio work. I've spent a lot of time solo-developing at this point
which is why I'd like to do a team effort this time around
Im more or less the same
Ive taken quite a few 3D art classes at community college, and I have degree in comp sci
join Lounge 1, maybe we can set something up? <
not announced yet. yeah its live.
just came back home
We will announce the theme on the September 8th stream, when the jam officially kicks-off. The stream starts at 2 PM EST.
Make an amazing game by yourself or with a team (up to 5) around the given theme in Unreal Engine 4.
Submit a download link to the SUBMISSION THREAD before midnight (EST) on the night of September 11th/ morning of September
Topic is updated with the theme. Go jam, folks!
The link will be updated.
so
Uhm how do I fit my physical animation movement to this theme? :D
what song is it from?
There's gotta be a way
this theme doesn't seem too bad
hey @glass fossil give me a miliondollaridea
@glass fossil a miliondollar game jam idea
Oh man. I better hurry up and finish Unrealbot. You guys need your game ideas!
Yeah!
lol
finished at midnight next sunday ๐
Nope
I have.... none
Yes.
Something with invisibility
i had an idea but its gone
^lol
lol
something with procedurally cut limbs
oooo
I don't want my ideas to be stolen, but a game where you lose something, and you need to find it
wow thats a really good idea. wish it was my idea lol.
but someone actually did a game jam similar to that
@stable kiln but now you should know the idea right?
Your legs. and you need to get them back
pretty much
think ill just start making blackjack and hookers
monty python themed
would also fit the phsical animation thingy
or well, learn to live without
Don't share your ideas here if you don't want them to be stolen, because if you say something that we already thought of, we can't pretty much use it
or... we could say aloud the most obvious ones, making it more challenging for others to make up original ideas?
i really have to thing of the sligs from oddworld now
I was trying to think of something to do with the slice procedural meshes. jealous of your idea lol
hard to top that
@small fern true
@quiet thistle btw did you get the slicing figured out?
My only question is, why doesn' that monster just hold the shotgun with the fingers from it's mouth? Be way more convenient
didn't I help you at IRC on that?
those are tentacles
I may mix names
@small fern I did, apparently creating the procedural meshes was the problem?
ok, i have an idea
yes
pretty much yup
but if i manually create verts and stuff, it doesnt work
im just gunna resort to fart humor ๐
I have an idea that uses the physical animation feature and I don't want my idea to be stolen pls dont use physical animation
(jk)
@quiet thistle you may need to make the collision manually in that case
physics would then work again, but I don't know about slicing
yeah @small fern I kinda figured there was some collision thing going on
like i would have ot procedurally make the collision mesh as well
to get the physics working
@grizzled zenith Mine involves UE4 :/
Aaarghh
@quiet thistle yup
;/
...much easier to just copy from static mesh component if you dont need to create the meshes during runtime
I'm just going to throw it out there, if anyone is interested in an Animator/Rigger/Character Artist combo, let me know. I can do more than that, but I'm trying to find ways to focus on my "speciality" field
but 500 mb assets... whats that about? ๐
If someone has a good idea, I can team up with you lol
I want a sound guy
you can't have enough of them
;P
JESUS; I GOT THE IDEA
the MILIONDOLLARIDEA :3
it's about being a millionare
and going bankrupt
ok, I'll not spoil any more idea, promise :/
@quiet thistle it's why I became it, never could find any of those three, let alone the combo
ok, im just gunna make a cow that has 2 asses that both can fart, not quite sure how im gunna connect it to the theme tho
link shortener
the sound guys I met in my life were always awesome โค
wow i got a idea for a VR game. but no idea how i can do it properly in time
@quiet thistle I confess, I thought about game like that before the jam already but didn't expect the theme to be so fitting for it
was just thinking what kind of game you could make with these new feats
talking of new feats, I just got ue 4.13 compiled with new simple vehicle class
but I don't think there's any use for it for this jam
Hm I got an idea that could build up a real idea. Damn thats deep.
i dont have a real idea yet, but my farting cow is making progress ๐
@small fern cheater!
๐
my friend just gave me a really good idea, might go with it...
does he get the t-shirt if you win?
I think when I win the T-Shirt someday, I don't want it anymore ;P
I got a collection of free game dev tshirts going from meetups, got like 3 so far lmfao
Unity, VR t-shirt, and an unreal tshirt
it feels better to EARN the shirt though
true ๐ฎ
really? Now I want one even more
didnt know that, wow thats super cool
this is the last chance to pre-find a team to train with so when the MegaJam comes next month we're prepared
I need a t-shirt to replace my poster that was signed by Tim Sweeney for participating in the beta program. I had stored it in a box, and there was a leak from rain......completely ruined. So disheartening
Hey I have that one too!
this theme is hard, i still have no idea ๐
I sense a lot of puzzle games coming from this one
Ok, here is one idea for you all (and if someone wins with this one, I will be mad :P) :
Searching for a wi-fi signal
๐
You walk around and point your phone at the sky
rule #2 don't make a game that you found on google image search ;P
I've been in the club just as long though! I have that exact jam shirt. :-)
@robust basalt still no swag? :P
Swag bag usually takes 2 months or more.
I imagine it's because the shirts are custom made for the jam.
Which means the order for the shits can be delayed if Alex has to chase down the winners.
Shirts**
<_<
Can always ping Alex about it if you are curious.
Would be neat if we could see the post process (ha) online
Like where is it currently at
just read the jam rules
"Submission must be packaged for Windows and playable on Windows 7 and 8 or MAC OS X"
I don't have any of those ๐
still pretty safe to assume it works on those if it works on win10
unless you go and make DX12 only game :p
glad to see I'm not the only one who refuses to switch from Windows 7
Win 7 was last windows that didn't have any huge annoyancies
Win 8 allowed pausing on file transfers, only improvement apparent to me as user
and win10 is just horrific
That feel when you come up with a great idea for the theme and your usual team is unavailable for the weekend :(
i got one idea but it's bit too political
I checked the rules and they didn't forbid it
if your idea is better than mine, I'll join your team Kappa
but I don't think it's good to mix politics here
I'd play a game that had a smart political commentary
I don't think anyone else would find it funny but finnish people ๐
I heard Stalin's game just got release
yes
keep in mind your judging audience
lets just say we have a gov atm who takes from poor and gives to rich, so you could something along that scenario
I know but things weren't as bad and obvious before around here
but I don't really want to go into politics
say your opinion and just put a questionmark after every sentence ๐
why not just take the idea and give it a more harmless spin?
it's not easy to execute either, would require a lot effort
I have other idea that I'm considering though
I'm shocked! ๐ฎ Will work on my prototype and say good night! โค
might reduce the vert count later
really starting to like blender sculpting, u really brutalize that cube ๐
is that for the gamejam ๐ฎ
yea, bet the animations wont be 100% smooth
@scenic venture How is your art and your animating? (did you have a different alias in the beta days? I don't recognise this one)
Looks interesting
well im gunna try get this thing running
its just a prototype for now
still no idea about the theme but gotta make someting i guess ๐
he will prolly lose something and than he knows what it was
or something
maybe a hat
he looks like a hat lover
I have a feeling I wont finish my idea, but screw it
I'll give it a shot
It will be good practice for the megajam
I was pretty quiet during the beta days, I rarely posted if ever
@maiden loom this is just random tidbits from throughout the years https://www.facebook.com/Pocket-Sized-Animations-161851797198436/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
Most of the projects I worked on didn't want me posting stuff, so the only thing I have uploaded of my animations currently is my weapon animations from Black Sierra from UT3 days where I co-created it
;P kinda fits that Channel
https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/epic-megajam-2016-announced
very excited, no way that one can be skipped
lets just hope that this time around there will not be as many trying to cheat as last time
those prizes make people do funny things
last year some started like month advance
or at least many weeks before
argh, all my ideas are so frickin dark
lol, well I think I'm going to have to go with the darkness as I can't see any light in any of my ideas. All pretty depressing stuff
I'd tell my worst ideas but I kinda promised I wouldn't spoil anymore ideas
@small fern I will tell you my idea if you want to tell me some of the ones you got
loool mmk
oh olento, that's an interesting idea. It could be reversed
Yep, getting married the day after the jam starts and then I'm on my honeymoon. Bummer! Good luck to everyone in the megajam!
Haha, I think it's fine. I dunno any of the protocol with weddings. I am pretty much just along for the ride.
My responsibilities: show up.
Excited about this theme though. Got an idea, gonna run with it.
We're allowed to enter vr games, aren't we?
yes
Nice :-)
Oh fuck the jam starts today
Unless internet gods are merciful, I will not be able to do a playthrough stream
In the middle of a move. All my stuff will be there today but internet... iunno
All you need is a box, a power outlet and wifi ๐
Lol wifi stream.... nope
:F
only if you lived in Finland
even kids around here got mobile phones with mobile internet connection that would be capable to stream
so basically you are never without internet around here, even your landline fails
I could stream better from LTE on my phone than from my normal connection, lol.
Megajam...
whats the megajam theme?
ah I thought they had announed iit already
even last year when they just announced prices, people started building games beforehand
they definitely don't want that
๐ฎ well thats cheating
true lol sadly
but some were actually stupid enough to post their progress online
and got caught for it
xD well thats great thinking lol
also, some who got caught, claimed they were innocent ๐
and the others? who didnt post their progress
or did they get caught with file creation dates or something?
I don't think the project that looked that had way more work in them than one week were even considered for winning entries
I only know the ones that were obvious
it is
I hope they don't announce more prizes early on this year
we already know winners will get shields
and people horde those enough as it is
yeh
one part I didn't like last year that they raffled the main prize, which was titan x I think
Winners don't lose drugs
๐ฎ a titan x nice prize
there wasn't any real measures they could have taken to filter out extra team members
to maximize the odds
and I think there were some really quickly done entries so they could just attend
yeah thats whats always bugged me about some game entries
it's just so easy to get uggly
the worst thing about communities are the people
also, it was clearly hinted beforehand that art for art awards should be original to impress the jugdes, one art prize went to project that used infinity blade assets
game was cool, I don't deny that
but it was kinda odd choise for those reasons
well, there were other categories for that
"do you have an artist on your team? no? then we'll ignore the art quality"
ah i see
do note that I'm not bitter about these because I didn't win, I didn't even submit a game myself ๐
I just didn't think everything went that smoothly
for example, for the titan x raffle, I think it would have at least been fair to raffle it amongs teams and then amongs that teams members for example
that way people couldn't get better odds by making game with all their relatives for example ๐
haha
I think they raffled it so that there was no "inner team" bickering
on who deserved the titan
yeh, that's one good point though
it just leaved room for cheaters
although I don't really think the person who won did that
if I remember correctly one of the team members I was working with got something raffled to him, don't remember it being a Titan X though. I think it was the digital subscription or something
they raffled a lot of items
btw
I got a really fitting idea for the jam
still working on the details, but I think nobody would doubt there's no theme connection
are you submitting one for this jam?
I dunno, this one wouldn't require that huge amount of coding, art side is another thing
considering 2D atm
most gamejam entries have been 3D I think
but I know few finalists that won with 2D too
but all in all, 2D entries seem to be pretty rare
I don't think I've done 2D game myself in 20 years
last game was browser java tetris ๐
2D that is
in 2D you have different issues to solve, I dunno if it really is easier
maybe for asset creation
thing is, I need characters for this, and that not my speciality
it's simpler to make a fully curated experience
and not have to implement all sorts of expected 3d shit like wall running
but I think I could get something done with Spriter
do you know what wall running is in 2d? jumping royale.
just use 3d characters
orthogonal camera
smash a cell shader on it
pretend you drew it all that weekend
yeh, if I used existing content
adobe fuse
heh
yeh, I have fuse installed for prototype chars
I know it's allowed, just feels bit cheating to use existing char and anims
it's the same as using clip art
if it's just you, you can't get a whole game done in time
I was thinking of just handdrawing stuff ๐
well, I think I'll start with fuse now, at least I get something quickly done
๐
i dont have any ideas so i got that going for me
hey this is the first gamejam im thinking about doing So i was wondering is it ok to use meshes Like a box or character you already made?
Going to try out the Epic Megajam. I've been on a few gamejams before but nothing this long.
@indigo bobcat you can use existing assets as long as you haven't made them yourself before the jam
you need to mention what you used on your submission though
So is it ok to use assets bought on the marketplace?
it is allowed
@small fern thanks good to know
I think one game won even with vehicle setup bought from marketplace
Ok thanks. I am a programmer and not a artist so that's why I asked.
is it yours? ๐
you should also check the rules ๐
the part that tells what is allowed and what is not isn't that long
should take a week off work so I can work on mega game jam
The September UE4 Jam is under way! Theme - YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT UNTIL IT'S GONE Registration & details here: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?121421-September-UE4jam-September-8-12th-THEME-TO-BE-ANNOUNCED
We will announce the theme on the September 8th stream, when the jam officially kicks-off. The stream starts at 2 PM EST.
Make an amazing game by yourself or with a team (up to 5) around the given theme in Unreal Engine 4.
Submit a download link to the SUBMISSION THREAD before midnight (EST) on the night of September 11th/ morning of September
cheers
๐
Submission may include sourced (non-original) assets, but the sourced assets must be noted. Submission must not include assets created prior to the Contest period (outside of noted sourced assets).
seems fair
there are rules, but they are pretty loose on them
they just dont want you retrofitting games you made the month before for the current theme
but i mean, its the honor system... just dont be a dick lol
it's still pretty odd set of rules
like you can't use anything you've done yourself in past
but can use everything anyone but you have done in past
I like the Ludum Dare Jam rules more
well, I dunno if they still have them like that
but in past you could use your premade functions, art etc if you made them publicly available prior jam
so that anyone else could also use them
that's also bit questionable rule if you are the one who has figured how to use certain engine feat and have made extensive example on wiki / forums out of it
anyone else can use that code but you
I don't think the rules are meant to be that strict but if you interpret them literally, that's how it goes
main thing that they want to prevent is that people build the game beforehand
everyone should have their brain wiped like from men in black too so everyone is on even playing fields. cant use information you learned from past gamejam.
heh
๐
but yeah its definitely so people dont prebuild games, thats why they have hte rule
frankly, they shoudl just say: "Dont make your game and retrofit it for theme"
thats esssentially what they want to avoid
but to play with the idea little further
if I make a tutorial
and someone else implements it and shares it online
I could use it again ๐
lol
!gameidea
A fighting game where you slay giant spiders in an abstract space.
!gameidea
A racing game where you fly jets because the world is a crazy place but you lose health every time you do it.
hahahahhaha
that's a total ironman ripoff
lol
oh jets, not jet engines
close enough
!gameidea
An adventure game where you go to school with extra-dimensional entities to gain levels in a giant terrarium and the sun gives you more power.
well thats interesting
!less specific game idea
!gameidea
A fighting game where you quiz flowers in a cabin in the woods.
That is... interesting
nice ๐
heh
that looks almost like my first unity platformer
the platform layout is similar too
yeh
I should get some sleep, maybe try to get the gameplay running later on
Rocket League's rumble-mode has messed my plans now
sleep is for the WEAK
I guess :p
Haven't even started yet
my theme connection wil be super weak, this theme is a bit too emo for me ๐
how can u make a funny game with a depressing theme ๐
tony hancock made a living out of depressing comedy
steve o made a living from getting hurt and snorting wasabi ๐
im not meant for that kind of stuff tho ๐
My humour is very dark so I could fit right in with a depressing jam. However I don't have the time as I am running heroin into the projects as part of a CIA initiative to depopulate the inner cities. erm..... I mean.... erm.... I am washing my hair ยฌ_ยฌ
ok my idea is this. Altzheimer's - the game. It is about a guy who forgets... erm.... thingy and then goes on to ... erm... do something, I can't remember what. Then when he finally gets to finish his........ 9.45am I think but my watch is broken. Cheese for tea mum thanks !
Got our game idea sorted, it is a dark one.. Got to start coding now! Going all post apocalyptic.
man this theme is either depressive story or turn based puzzle stuff
ok, monkeys from space come steal all our bananas and then they are all gone
What is this gamejam's theme?
Can't take part because I'm still on vacation, but curious :)
its in the title
Idea : You play a lone man, wandering the desert looking for his family when you come across an oasis. But it is a mirage. Then when you get to Baghdad, you realise all the oil is gone and sold to China and various other allied countries and your family is dead. 'Murica.
If I want to make my game online multiplayer, how basicly would I make it so that you can host a game and join from other network? (I'm pretty new to this stuff)
I know how to do it locally
would it not be the same as locally but with a public IP?
Idk, probably
Gamejam Idea : Nope.... it's gone.
a bunch of time is gone ๐
@lament oar is there any guide that shows you how you can connect with public IP?
I haven't actually done networking myself yet. Downside of working on a game, you end up along the path the game requires. I could really use a month off to blast through some networking stuff.
Yeah same, but this would be great way to learn some of it. I also do only blueprint
Holy moly you just had an idea. "Everybody's come back from the rapture". You walk around a town where lights turn into people and they say things like "yeah it was alright. Glad to be back though".
well thinking about the theme is getting me nowhere, im just goin bac to blender and make stuff
I'm sure there's plenty of jokey ways to approach the theme. Losing things and it has a comical effect, rather than going down the depressing route.
yea, i think i have something now
Who is doing the september game jam?
Hartleys
im doin the jam ๐
i just had a frankenstein its alive moment ๐
those are the best ๐
I live next to a graveyard. It's probably best I dont have any frankenstein moments.
this thing is gunna carry my jam
everything is im gunna make is gunna support my new creation ๐
I was worried yesterday, but I did come up with an idea.
More particle effect than I ever did before ๐
*effects
my idea is kinda low , but it has to be done
@marc - You live in Blackpool, surely every other day involves Frankenstein moments
True. I try not to go outside though. I don't have enough 20pences to fund the "i have to phone my sick mum" scavs
we're doing it for the first time. I've only even done 24 hour hacks before though, finding this 3 day thing a bit odd, I'm just faffing around the whole time thinking "oh there's plenty of time", which means Sunday is going to be a manic rush no doubt
there is plenty time untill its all gone ๐
hmm i feel like i can make a better run cycle
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know I'm up for some gamejamming. I'd prefer to do 3d assets or music. Hit me with a PM if you want to team up! ๐
!gameidea
A simulation game where you team up with bloodthirsty rabbits on Mars but you're made of light.
going to start soon, but first bit rocket league because of the new update
So you on mars with your rabbits and they try to kill themselves you need to stop them
but you body made of light so then night comes you die and it this time you discover that you have a body
this game is about discovering new things in your body before night time comes (almost rogue-like)
So you can build things from your body and you try to stop rabbits from killing in that time
!gameidea
An adventure game where you crush tigers to become the ruler and you can only make one mistake.
my particle system is done
still a lot of work to do on my skeletal mesh
and gameplay i still have no idea
might have to resort to platform jumping if i dont think of anything '
so exciting when owninator does a game
get hyped, this is gunna be good ๐
my great idea doesn't look so great anymore...
What was your idea?
something with virtual reality (in game, not irl), but it relies on particle effects, but I have no idea how do create sound effect for games.
and it feels terrible without them
i will have to think of something else ๐
jam jam jam
use a soundpack ๐
Freesound: collaborative database of creative-commons licensed sound for musicians and sound lovers. Have you freed your sound today?
bah i can't find my jam resources page
man this is old, i need to update this
I would add to sounds/music now, Sonic Pi, that thing is awesome
I know about freesound.org, but it's hard to find fitting, matching sounds.
http://www.bfxr.net/ which looks like a newer version fo Sfxer on the web
Sound-effects generation for your games in flash.
I used that sound generator before, but I would need something that is more like that last Tron movie, and not like something from an 8 bit game
bookmark all the things
@low carbon Is the max teamsize for megajam still 5
yes
I'd vote for 3 :p
started finally working
wau, who is the guy behind stormgs.com?
not going for the online idea
he even has some cool 3D stuff there
I don't like the Gladiator music on his videos, but the low Poly stuff looks cute
not to mention i wunna know how he did the evil voice ๐
ow, i didnt see any of his videos ๐
some1 posted the link in slack dunno if it was his
megajam?
yea they have like a billion dollar in prizes this time ๐
alex wil be handing out bundles of dollah billz like it aint no thing
golden mousemats and stuff like that
ok I just did something
the game crashes right when I play it
every time
ah nvm
huh, torrent only though (stormgs)
would need a better reason to install torrent software to my computer
I had to post this here because of the theme http://youtubedoubler.com/?video1=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DetvTHU-cyW4&start1=0&video2=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZgMEPk6fvpg&start2=114&authorName=aphrocarlin

aww no, not the sad trash panda again
controls are done
"I haven't even started" <one hour later> "I just finished core gameplay"
stop being so efficient ๐
haha
had some fun in blender now time to start up the engine again
found soem mistakes and bac to blender ๐
this is why I always leave Maya and Unreal up at the same time :p
all fixed again i think
I got super distracted and made this... https://gfycat.com/FlakyPlushFennecfox
Watch loop GIF by fpwong on Gfycat. Discover more GIFS online at Gfycat.
what was the theme again??
Hahaha ๐
infinite tunnel game, where the tunnel is made out of mannequins
yess finally SOME progress on the procedural city
(yes, that's what I'm going for on a game jam game)
hmm
I might scrap the whole procedural city progress and do it differently
yeah, rip 4 hours
you was thinking and stuff
so not scrap
Is it important to register for a jam now or i can do it latter? I not sure yet if i will complete anything
I think it's okay to just put the finished sub in and pm the details they need.
but like better for them to orangize stuff if you register
but doesn't seem to be a requirement
also count down says it's August ๐
@indigo harbor How did you achieve that effect? Haha.
@ruby cradle Hey, thanks for the heads up, I missed this!
afaik just a load of models, in a square formation, and then offset + rotation
heh
I got sidetracked again
I'm really good at this
I really wanted to get the whole thing to run in forward renderer
No prob, I'm interested in how it was made too
but 4.13 didn't package with forward
now compiling promoted build
I know it's asking for trouble, living on the edge ๐
I'm more curious about the perf on low end hw though so put the engine to compile in the background while making pizza
whoops made an infinite loop accidentally
I surprized myself doing that on c# few days ago
it's a really hard to do that mistake in code
I mean, sure you do while loop with bad exit condition and it's done but it's something you automatically handle when you create the loop usually
I guess it's easier to get to that point with BPs when nodes are running around the loop node
The standard skybox works quite nice with my background image ๐
Dumb question but can you make a vr game for the unreal game jam?
you can
people have done that in past too
although I don't know if it goes 100% by the rules
well, they don't deny it
"Submission must be packaged for Windows and playable on Windows 7 and 8 or MAC OS X"
but there definitely has been VR only games in past
@ruby cradle can probably verify that as well
yup
hm.. I asked it yesterday and got a yes from somebody here. I'm halfway in development of my vr game jam entry now
yeh, they've mentioned on official streams too
๐
There aren't any real exclusions to the jam. Just needs to be an original work really.
and made in ue4
that too
because.. yes.. people submitted unity games
you can try to make a unity game, but it has no chance against an Unreal game ๐
Oh snap! Ha ha
Any advice on convincing the people you live with that this is an acceptable thing to do with your time?
If they need to be convinced, forget about it
^
or, use a long stick
it's just one weekend
@safe halo it only mattered to my wife when I started bringing home the dough, then she stopped complaining, just go out and bring home the dough
Lol. Ok. I'll go to the grocery store and get some dough. Easy
Been to many a game jam, people who needed to be convinced, or were never really down, end up tuning out the event, or stop showing up (harder when they live there)
^
Cause eventually the new/fun factor wears off off after you've been at it for 16 hours
