I cannot find a "general design" channel, so I am going to post it here. I am toying with a mech based game, with mostly automated weapons. The mechs are composable, so you have legs, body (possibly rotatable, possible with a weapon), arms (possibly weaponized), weapons attached to the arms, shoulders, etc. Lots of weapons, and by extension, lots of possible things which target other things.
Now the fringe problem. Lets say I have a body with a cannon on the front, which also has arms that can have guns. These can "aim" independently. However, that is only half true. Because the bodys horizontal aim would be rotating the body. Its possible that the body in order to aim rotates such as the arms can no longer reach their target, or a number of similar combinations. Basically "aiming conflicts".
So I am brainstorming how I can deal with this properly. Currently my mind is rolling around the concept of "aim priority", as in "which weapon controls the primary aim, and other weapons will release their aim if the priority aiming object rotates it out". If anyone has any alternative suggestions or ways to refine this, I would be all ears.

Crucially, the firing arcs were displayed visually on screen and you would click on them to fire the weapons with the associated firing arcs.
its not as simple as "damage" unfortunately. for instance, some weapons will be heat based, some will be electric, some will be projectile, some will be explosive. the idea is that players will have to balance their energy and heat and damage and make decisions about what to set "active" when

tbh everything but the arms probably will be facing forwards. but note that the core rotates 360 on the legs
perhaps that is the restriction I need, core controls primary aiming, everything other then core only acts within the range the core gives it (rotation range)
i can see the end boss.... a mech with 10 spinning cores so that he isn't limited by those restrictions ๐

I'm having trouble picturing it. You control a mech that moves on a 2d plane, and have no control over where the mech aims its torso, and the mech might have weapons that don't aim forwards, and the problem is how to deal with the mech deciding what to aim at if ... some unspecified condition.

Directly controlling the rotation usually feels moer sim-like. Good for slower pace and strategy games.
if I made the cursor basically local to the mech (as in , local space not world space), so one joy controlled the mechs position (in world space), and the other joy controlled a local-space target position that moves with the mech (used only for rotation, basically a direction vector). I could then display the area of effect of the various weapons over top of the map basically during action.

UE saves annoyingly frequent. I sometimes even take the time to Cancel... Like, I know what is worth saving.
and then half of the time after you press save, don't modify anything and exit the editor it tells you you have unsaved changes

autosave can be configured but it feels like playing with fire
Autosave has literally not once saved me from losing work because of a crash
when I'm exiting and it tells me I have unsaved changes I prepare for the worst
So as far as I can tell it doesn't do anything at all

I've run into some sublevel bugs in ue5 where it wants to save a new sublevel with the same name as another but with _auto after it
but it can't
I guess it's the auto save copy

yeah my main thing is i had only just recently started using UE4 sometime last year. the other thing being the many plugins that I have that'll break (as well as some of my own stuff, possibly). oh and how I keep literally everything in one single project, making it very large, so migrating that would be a pain

In my case it would be worse
- Porting over the engine modification, who knows what changed in 5.1 release
- Porting ALL the plugins AND making sure they all work with UE5 code
- Porting ALL the C++ code AND making sure they all work with UE5 code
- Processing the source assets for Nanite AND Fallback LOD meshes
- Making sure low settings works without Lumen and provide consistent visuals
- Reworking the entire animation system to make use of UE5 new features (which some of them I already reinvent in UE4)
- Reworking the UI system (which also have C++ code and fills the gap that UE5 common UI fills)
- Changing the world composition map to world partition map
I'm sure Ben doesn't consider it too large to be ported over, but eh
in your case it would be worse yeah, due to your personal changes to the engine
im sure for me, things would be completely fine, i just dont feel the need to atm

we happy few was the worst game I was compelled to complete. It has a ton of great ideas and the setting + story are well done. But it's let down by the bland gameplay. The random generation was really its downfall - the premade sections are by far the best parts of the game and the rest just feels like padding.
Unfortunately it was always meant to be randomly generated - which does somewhat lend itself to the story they wanted to tell, but it just doesn't work as well as something more handmade for what they actually ended up building.

the problem with big stuff is, you can't think about what to simplify. it's human tendency to complicate things.

xD trust me, simple gameplay mechanics are awesome
Have to say Titanfall 2. It was an almost perfect game. I took points away because it was a bit too short. I wanted a longer story as it gripped and immersed me. The control system was fluid and you really felt like you had the control to do what you needed. I cannot fault the game.

ok so far in my suite of tests to find out if its me or if its unreal:
- full windows memory test: no issues
- 30m of VRAM testing in OCCT, no issues
- 30m of 3D Standard in OCCT at shader level 3 with error detection, no issues
