Gradient maps are a good way to generalize this, but I'd recommend using an additional mask texture for smooth edges. Limits crossings somewhat, but if you can live with that compromise it's a fantastic solution

The VATS battle system is repurposed for attack command. So you can have both realtime combat for normal attack and VS-like combat bubble for item use/special abilities
I think the twist could add some positioning strategy when executing abilities, so it's not just select an enemy and unleash it no matter the range

I thought that game was excellent except for one thing. You get upto the last mission fairly quickly and if you run it, you have to reload a previous save game. Which sucks and I'm not sure why they didn't just let you back out into the open world to finish up. So I have the last mission on hold until they add the post-game.

And also you can use Shadow Pass Switch in either Forward and Deferred to manipulate the shadowmap projected from the mesh

I actually did several months ago. The suggestions I got were post effects, which don't produce the same results I wanted. Anyways, it's a wish-list item now.
