I'll raise you a second rate burger joint game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Wimpy_(video_game)

Mr. Wimpy is a platform game released by Ocean Software in 1984 for the Oric 1, ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, and Commodore 64. It was a promotional tie with Wimpy restaurants with their logos, company mascots, and theme tunes reproduced. The gameplay is based on the video game BurgerTime.

Because usually headphones are audio peripheral you wear on... head

quasi mantle
deep copper

i heard someone say "I believe Microsoft is making professional Headphones …." just yesterday, but idk what that is supposed to mean

quasi mantle

Though to be fair, I stand corrected with Microsoft having weird naming conventions

deep copper

that's earphones for you

quasi mantle

Tablet PCs aren't supposed to be worn on the head, y'all

proud jay

it's just dumb that it's all surface

deep copper

VR advancements can get there

proud jay
#

idk why they call the headphones surfaces as well

#

guess they want a "surface ecosystem"

quasi mantle
#

Then there's Xbox Series

#

Because polluting the OG Xbox with Xbox One name wasn't enough

deep copper

if the surface (material?) feels good, then it makes sense i guess?

I really dislike earbuds

deep copper
quasi mantle
deep copper
#

like, really love those, they don't want to be seperated

quasi mantle
#

I forgot the exact models, but I know few of them are recommended by audiophiles

celest musk
#

well i wouldn't take that as a reference

quasi mantle
celest musk
#

read some reviews, and take a close look of what customers say about the materials after a few months of usage

#

some stuff may sound good, but the "leather" may rub off, or something similar after a while of usage

quasi mantle
#

Anyway

celest musk
#

or it gets sticky

proud jay
#

yeah my current headphones leather is starting to degrade

celest musk
#

because they all use fake leather nowadays, and there's a wide span of quality

quasi mantle
#

I now prefer earbuds, because I tend to move around a lot and easier to bring to sleep than headphones

deep copper
#

headphones keep changing and then there's the whole changed products, some well knows headphones' recent reviews are bad because they are now using different making processes or different manufacturers, watch out for super old reviews

celest musk
#

that's another problem for sure

#

but you have to take some risk anyways 😄

deep copper
#

also, keep in mind whether you need mic or not, and detatchable wires

#

if you are into wireless, goodluck charging and dealing with lags

celest musk
#

also a lot of the headphones that are popular among "audiophiles" require an external headphone amp or a soundcard with integrated one

quasi mantle
#

I think earbuds are more durable and less maintenance in that regard

The worst it can get is cleaning the silicone rubbers from earwax

celest musk
#

as they have higher impedance and therefor a normal audio output won't be enough

quasi mantle
#

Just look for those that has flatter frequency response

#

That's all I'm going to say

proud jay
#

Yeah I'm not an audiophile, just looking for something wireless for daily use for meetings and background music

deep copper
#

i kinda get earache after using earphones for long, headphones feel much better, but I can't keep my head on a pillow easily then

proud jay
#

same

quasi mantle
#

I tend to headbang a bit when playing drums as well, so falling headphones are common for me lol

deep copper
#

but again, I don't know your listening standards, and preferred genres

celest musk
#

if you like bass, you won't get around full enclosed headphones

deep copper
#

or just, sleep

celest musk
#

or put them next to your head and set them to 100% 😄

deep copper
celest musk
#

most stuff can be fixed by EQ anyways

#

but if you buy something cheap that can't go below or above a certain frequency, you can't fix that with EQ

quasi mantle
#

With jazz and prog rock, balanced frequency response is priority

quasi mantle
celest musk
#

most music these days is mastered like shit from a audiophile point of view 😄

deep copper
quasi mantle
pearl elk
#

If you like bass you need 2x12" subwoofers minimum

quasi mantle
#

Being a generalist motherfricker that I am

celest musk

deep copper
#

quasi mantle
#

I was about to play drums in middle school, but someone else beat me to it, and I had to live with painful acoustic guitar strings

#

At least nowadays I could be a drummer in my own term, and look for electronic drum kit for home practicing

deep copper
#

freedom!

quasi mantle
#

I really want to play jazz, metal, and prog rock drumming lol

proud jay
#

yeah I think electric drum is very nice

#

it makes you feel less self-consious of annoying other people or being judged when playing if you can use headphones

#

I think at least, never done it myself

deep copper
#

that's quite decent

proud jay
#

If I would ever buy drums again it would definitely be electric

#

electronic*

quasi mantle
#

I think Alesis Nitro Mesh is one of the good option, as it also has side stick support

#

Which is more common on jazz fusion tunes

deep copper
quasi mantle
#

Not all drummers headbang

deep copper
#

i have only seen nango star drumming videos so idk much

#

nyango*

quasi mantle
#

I kinda started with metal more, thus the headbanging

proud jay
#

I think playing like smooth jazz while headbanging is kinda strange

quasi mantle
#

Then bleed over to prog rock and jazz

deep copper
#

headbanging to jazz would be strange

quasi mantle
#

Somewhere above 140 BPM

deep copper

if you really feel the rythm, i guess that makes it possible?

conrods go between the piston and the crank

deep copper
#

i have heard of piston before but like that's it 😅

deep copper
deep copper
pearl elk
#

well lets say the conrods transfer the linear motion of the piston when the engine fires to the rotational motion of the crank

deep copper
#

crank = tire?

pearl elk
#

crank is the main shaft which drives the flywheel

#

looks like someone might have made carbon conrods which work 😛

fathom wadi
#

huhuhuh shaft

deep copper
#

huh, so they made quite a vital component of the engine

pearl elk
#

Im not sure there are many parts in an engine which arnt vital 🙂

deep copper
#

true 🤣

#

but like, it's a big chunk of it

pearl elk
#

yeah you dont just go and mess with engine balancing of components like conrods

#

you can mess with injectors, over and under size no worries

deep copper
#

will it explode 🤔

deep copper
pearl elk
#

weak metal conrods can tear the engine apart from the inside

deep copper
#

so it DOES explode??

pearl elk
#

the carbon fiber ones just delaminated and pulled apart, bit like plastic

deep copper
#

that's quite, heartbreaking

#

if it broke you mean

pearl elk
#

they only replaced 2 conrods of 4 luckily, so they probably got it back on 2 cylinders

#

here we go, this is a metal conrod failure lol

deep copper
#

that looks, horrifying

pearl elk
#

thats pretty clean tbh 😂

deep copper
#

😨

pearl elk
#

stock cars shouldnt do this if youre running them on recommended fuels

deep copper
#

wait they can if you arent?

pearl elk
#

lol if you put a wet NOS system on expect worse than this

deep copper
#

what about electric cars though? they shouldn't have this right

pearl elk
#

they did a 100 shot of NOS on a VW as a joke on one YT channel I was watching

#

it spat the gearbox out

deep copper
#

:/

#

brutal

pearl elk
#

electric cars still have mechanical components, Id be more worried about popping the lithium cells

deep copper
#

😭 why is it all so fragile

pearl elk
#

but electric could still shred gear teeth, universal joints etc

#

thats why performance electric tend to go direct drive

deep copper
#

"direct drive"?

pearl elk
#

the engine is directly on the wheel hub vs connected via a shaft

deep copper
#

so less middleman?

pearl elk
#

yeah less places for mechanical stress

#

as I like to call them possible points of failure

atomic hedge
#

Hey guys, a bit of a side question, but do you have idea where I can buy windows 10 activation key?

deep copper
#

why don't normal fuel cars have that then?

pearl elk
#

I suppose you could make little engines and put them closer to the wheels but its not ideal. That sort of thing is easier done with electric

deep copper
pearl elk
#

it wouldnt have actually been possible to sync up engines until more recently with improved ECUs anyways

deep copper
cursive crypt
deep copper
pearl elk
#

yeah electric are easy with just wires, no fuel worries

atomic hedge
#

and Im looking just for activation key

pearl elk
#

believe it or not in the early days of motor vehicles electric were actually ahead, they were faster, easier to use because old engines needed cranking, were unreliable etc

#

no computers though 🙂

trail wedge

pearl elk
deep copper
deep copper
celest musk
#

no

#

a electrical engine has some bearings and a shaft, thats pretty much the mechanical parts ok, apparently modern eletrical car engines are a bit more complex

#

an mechanical... don't get me started

pearl elk
#

that and materials tech, those early days it was basically electric carts but once they got into making big steel sedans batteries wernt good enough. Now we can make larger cars alot lighter with alloys

cursive crypt
#

Like, the key is on the USB say with the OS.

#

So, if you decide, you don't install it. Just use the key.

pearl elk
#

aluminium car parts are so annoying for aftermarket guys they usually just avoid it all together lol

#

but Tesla stamps most the car out of it

deep copper
pearl elk
#

carbon is too expensive for large production numbers, there are a few manufacturers who make most the car out of it though

pearl elk
#

fiberglass is cheaper or steel

#

abs plastic is used alot on stock vehicles, some aftermarket parts you can get in plastic

deep copper
#

carbon and fiber"glass" really don't sound strong like metal to me, maybe i am stereotyping materials by their names ... 😅

#

plastic...

pearl elk
#

well the sheet metal isnt the strength of the car anyway, its the structural steel that is but carbon can be very strong when done right. Fiberglass is really just used because its easy to work with and light, Corvettes have been made out of it for awhile but its not as nice fitment as steel since steel keeps its shape better

celest musk
#

while alot of things are structural these days, even the windshield is structural part of the body (on a lot of cars)

deep copper
#

science really works like magic

verbal junco
#

it's our world's magic

celest musk
#

some say it's physics

#

some say it's magic

pearl elk
#

glass is heavy which is why it can be prime real estate for race cars, those have cages though so structure isnt overly important

celest musk
#

and glass is unnecessary dangerous for racecars 😄

pearl elk
#

even things you wouldnt expect like paint and sound deadening can add alot of weight

deep copper
pearl elk
#

raw carbon is light as but not very UV resistant, same with polycarb but theyve made some headway with protective coatings

celest musk
#

nah, paint is like 15-20kg max

deep copper
#

so a car with no paint actually makes a difference..

celest musk
#

~5l primer, ~5l basecoat, ~5l clear coat for a middle sized car

pearl elk
#

lol Ive seen entire carbon bodies which weight 15-20kg

celest musk
#

but i really wonder why fiberglass isn't used more for fenders and such

#

pretty much all the body parts which aren't structural or could touch the ground

pearl elk
#

abs is easier to mould

#

in terms of tooling though fiberglass isnt more expensive

celest musk
#

well abs is also better for bumpers as it isn't as hard as fiberglass

#

so if you bump into something, abs can deform

#

fiberglass would tend more to break

pearl elk
#

I think thats why they like it, it deforms so you can just deform it back where fiberglass needs filler and repair. Though arguably fiberglass is easier to repair

celest musk
#

ABS is pretty easy to repair, too

pearl elk
#

could be easier just to get a new plastic one

celest musk
#

you can kind of weld ABS

pearl elk
#

yeah weld and fuse it depending

#

there are glues which melt abs and you can fuse it together without seams

#

I used to do that for a living funnily enough, we made caravan parts

celest musk
#

neat, when i messed with that stuff i wasn't aware of any glues 😭

#

and had to use a hot gun

#

and a big solder iron 😄

#

that was quite messy tho

#

and probably toxic af 😄

pearl elk
#

I think the benefit of fiberglass is if you screw up you just sand it back add gel coat and voila

#

where plastic can go bad if you over work it

celest musk
#

yea

pearl elk
#

acrylic polishes up nice, abs not so much

#

I miss the tools I had access to at the plastics workshop, vac formers are very cool

celest musk
#

but you need molds tho

pearl elk
#

thats what the 5 axis CNC machine was for 🙂

celest musk
#

do you just make a negative with the original part before?

#

well, that works on easy shapes...

#

but complex shapes like car body parts?!

pearl elk
#

yup

celest musk
#

what are the molds made of? aluminium?

pearl elk
#

there were even trimming programs when the part was formed it would go back to the 5 axis and it would trim the edges

#

nah, MDF, plastics and other hardners

#

the force of the vac form pull was always considered, a few times the mould pulled off from stress

celest musk
#

yea but lets say you want to make fender mold, you don't do that on the CNC unless you got somehow access on the original construction files

zinc matrix

We in the game

#

Now I just need to get selected

deep copper
#

ohhh!

#

congratulations !!!

verbal junco
#

so selection before selection

#

🤔

#

what is this for even

thick belfry
#

They get a lot of applicants

#

I'm applying for a study program

#

Creative media and gaming technologies

deep copper
#

so what now

verbal junco
#

which is the pre selection for entering the games industry 😂

thick belfry
#

I have to make a 5 minute presentation and then they'll ask questions

deep copper
#

presentation on your game?

thick belfry
#

Yeah they have a 85% job in desired fields within 2 years so it's a good bet on a solid start atleast

#

Don't have much of a game dev community where I'm currently living anyways

verbal junco
#

which country

thick belfry
#

I'm going to go because i wanna be around people with similar ambitions and get collab experience

#

Netherlands

#

But not in a heavily populated area myself

#

Just a small city

celest musk
#

is there much going on beside of amsterdam maybe?

#

blender has their head quarter there iirc

thick belfry
#

I want to study in Breda which has this school, and there's another game program in utrecht

#

There's some national indie groups

#

Who organise events

#

But its mainly in the randstad

fathom wadi
celest musk
#

utrecht is pretty close to amsterdam tho

#

while it's probably way cheaper to live in utrecht 😄

thick belfry
#

Rent prices are nuts in pretty much every city atm here

#

We have a 1 million house shortage

#

And we are only like 19 million people

deep copper
#

that's a lot of missing houses

thick belfry
#

In Amsterdam you can pay 700 for 8 Square metres

#

That's 86 square feet according to google

deep copper
#

700.. what currency?

thick belfry
#

Euros

deep copper
#

and per month?

thick belfry
#

Yes

celest musk
#

and probably cold

#

no heat + electricity

thick belfry
#

Well for 700 I'd hope heating and electricity would be included but still

deep copper
#

that's, not good

thick belfry
#

You'd probably pay a maintenance fee tho

deep copper
#

blender headquarters might be in trouble

thick belfry
#

It's worse case

celest musk
#

well 8m² probably don't need much heating anyways 😄

thick belfry
#

But I've seen listings like that more than once

#

Tuition is pretty cheap though

celest musk
#

yea, also looked at some point, but honestly it's a privilege to live there

thick belfry
#

Relatively speaking

thick belfry
celest musk
#

also you pay tourist prices in restaurants etc.

deep copper
#

so purchase is not even an option i assume

thick belfry
#

Amsterdam is not worth it

#

Honestly the city isn't even all that great

celest musk
#

its not bad either in my experience

thick belfry
#

I'll return to maastricht if I ever get the chance 😎

celest musk
#

they have a good infrastructure with the tram

deep copper
#

have you been there Ben?

celest musk
#

yea

#

but i can't remember in detail, because... well 😄

thick belfry
thick belfry
#

My grandpa lived in Amsterdam all his life so I was there often, he had one of them old rental contracts so he lived quite cheaply there

#

Then it'd definitely be worth it

deep copper
#

value for money rn is not good basically, otherwise, generally it's nice

#

right?

celest musk
#

it's not bad

#

but its way too expensive

#

everything

#

netherlands has alot of cozy towns which offer the same for a better price

#

from a tourist point of view

thick belfry
#

Amsterdam is like Disney world

celest musk
#

disney world for stoners 😄

thick belfry
#

There's a bunch of other attraction parks like it that offer the same experience but with way less tourists

deep glen
thick belfry
#

If it's a room not apartment/studio it's often included

#

But else yes, flat rent

verbal junco
#

I wish I could pay 700 for rent 😭

He married maid Marrion. Obv!

I dunno what all this talk about spouses is

cursive crypt

It is a side quest.

verbal junco

Not everyone was such a nerd. Sometimes people took a break.

I was keeping my chat logs for long time. I have no f clue what I was talking about.

#

foggy path
#

lol

#

I was wondering about my icq number at some point

#

but I can't remember any of that

verbal junco
#

icq lol

#

I remember the update that came out where you could no longer press enter to fire off teh chat msg

foggy path
#

icq was the very first IM/chat type thing I used I think

#

before that just email

verbal junco
#

I never really used it

#

just text messages really

foggy path
#

I was probably like 10 or 11 at the time so I have no recollection lol

cursive crypt
#

What I loved about ICQ (apart from that message sound) was that you had a cool profile where you can say your interests and info.

#

Discord can't match this.

#

And you were able to find friends based on that.

foggy path
#

Oh yeah it did have something like that

#

If they made it today you would probably just have to swipe left or right based on the user's profile picture alex

cursive crypt

Meh... Most memorable thing was my crush back then.

fleet tangle
#

I just missed out on having a 7-digit ICQ number. 😦

cursive crypt
#

Yeah, was kinda UCN

foggy path
#

I had a 4 digit steam id but I can't even brag with that nowadays because games no longer show or use that format

fleet tangle
#

Heh

verbal junco
#

someone offered me $100 bucks to buy my steam ID

foggy path
#

well yes it still exists but there's no games which really show that in any way, because even the games that do display steam id's use the more modern format instead of the old STEAM_0:0:1234 format

verbal junco
#

hmm maybe we're not talking about the same thing

foggy path
#

no idea :)

verbal junco
#

community IDs?

foggy path
#

steamID is the original format used by steam

#

they introduced the other formats later

verbal junco
#

oh yeah it is

that

#

no nevermind

#

steam id is the first line

#

I only got into steam around hl2

verbal junco

cursive crypt

Nah.. pirated

#

Yeah, I just saw. Trine, lol

Playing with bro.

#

At the same time I received some weird gift. Witcher 2, I haven't found anybody to give it away.

cursive crypt
#

For example, there was one old house next to school.
Some uncle turned his basement into one.

#

Gosh, I miss computer clubs.

#

Especially the night shifts, lol

verbal junco
#

well I think most people got CS because most people got steam for HL2

cursive crypt
#

There was no Steam at these clubs.

#

It was mostly a local network.

#

So, you were able to yell at your buds over the next room say.

verbal junco
#

I mean yeah but we were talking about the first steam game lol

verbal junco

so you must have gotten steam quite late

I got steam on day 1 for the first steam game... CS

#

:D

deep copper

is zomg flexing their 18 yo steam account?

foggy path

gotta flex what i got

foggy path
#

Have you ever thought about how annoyingly complicated something as simple as a door is as an actor

verbal junco
#

a timeline?

foggy path
#

Okay so you want it to open when interacted with, ok easy peasy, just slide it to a direction. Okay you also want it to not open unless some item exists, ok np. But then.. you want it to open in a different style for a different door... right so you'll add some support for it to move into different positions based on configuration

deep copper
#

just keep them always open, for everyone, and, everything <3

foggy path
#

Now you realized you sometimes want to have double doors...

#

A naive idea might be to just put two doors side by side and have them open into opposite directions... but that won't work if you want them both to open at the same time from interacting with either one

#

:P

deep copper
#

doors are complex irl too

#

locks, opening area, hinge maintenance

#

and then other stoper or whatever those accesories are

foggy path
#

Imagine if unreal supported nested actors properly instead of that mess that is child actor component... that would perhaps help a bit with the double doors sitch

verbal junco
#

doors are like the fundamental game design challenge

#

because of all the cases you have to think of

#

you also can't really design it like you would a real door

cursive crypt
#

Doors are prized as hard to make in a game.

verbal junco

anyone got any good knock knock jokes for this?

The Millennium Prize Problems are seven well-known mathematical problems selected by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. The Clay Institute has pledged a US$1 million prize for the correct solution of any of the problems.
To date, the only Millennium Prize problem to have been solved is the Poincaré conjecture. The Clay Institute awarded the...

it can probably print them bigger

quasi mantle

Considering how 3D printing is done, those ugly stripe textures have to be sanded away

deep copper
#

ugh that sounds trouble

#

then there's probably going to be some assembling work too

quasi mantle
#

Also I think PLA is less heat resistant than PVC, which used for most anime figurines

deep copper

so you if you bake them they melt?

quasi mantle
#

Well, it's easier to melt PLA prints than PVC

deep copper
#

then, the figures better not be too hot

quasi mantle
deep copper
#

technically

verbal junco
#

millenium problems are a rabbit hole

#

so in order to understand yang mills existence gap you have to first understand gauge theory

#

which is

#

In physics, a gauge theory is a type of field theory in which the Lagrangian (and hence the dynamics of the system itself) does not change (is invariant) under local transformations according to certain smooth families of operations (Lie groups).

#

which begs the question, what is a Lie group:

In mathematics, a Lie group (pronounced /liː/ "Lee") is a group that is also a differentiable manifold.

#

which begs the question, what is a manifold:

A manifold is a space that locally resembles Euclidean space
