vpn on windows side, docker on windows side (WSL 2 backend), code in ubuntu (WSL), IDE running on windows, ssh-tunnels required to access third party data sources configured on ubuntu (WSL)

#

and it works

#

!

#

๐Ÿ˜„

graceful sequoia
#

wsl is fantastic

foggy path
#

Why is your setup that complicated lol

#

I just have an Arch VM in VirtualBox and whitelisted IP in our AWS firewall :P

graceful sequoia
#

lol what you miss is that it's not more complicated than what you have

fluid bloom
#

client infra is only accessible via their internal network

#

thus we need vpn

foggy path
#

Ah of course

fluid bloom
#

and some servers are only accessible from some ssh bastions

#

so we need ssh tunnels for most stuff

graceful sequoia
#

oh fair on ssh tunnels

foggy path
#

That sounds mildly annoying :D

graceful sequoia
#

was just thinking of wsl versus virtualbox

foggy path
#

yeah WSL is probably a bit simpler to deal with than VBox depending on what you're doing

fluid bloom
#

yup

foggy path
#

with vbox the guest additions sometimes break randomly and then you have no idea how to fix it

fluid bloom
#

WSL handles network stuff pretty well out of box

#

so that VPN works well

graceful sequoia
#

there is some weird networking differences between plain windows and wsl though

fluid bloom
#

also docker forwards host ports to guest ports for containers too

graceful sequoia
#

for instance, in windows, apps can take ports that are non-exclusively claimed by services

fluid bloom
#

so I can run stuff in docker in ubuntu and access the address it exposes from windows side chrome

graceful sequoia
#

but wsl cannot do that, so port 3000 might not work if IP Helper service is running

#

but on windows plain, it works fine

#

ip helper just gets out of the way

#

it's definitely a bug not a feature, wsl apps should participate in port sharing like any windows app

fluid bloom
#

why

#

if the whole point of wsl is to allow using a linux subsystem on windows

#

I don't really know how it works on linux side tho

graceful sequoia
#

because if I start a nodejs server on port 3000 and it works on windows, why would starting a nodejs app on 3000 in wsl fail to work. I had to dig into netstat and learn that this specific service claimed the port, and I didn't know about windows port sharing features before that, so I was thinking in unix mentality, if a port is in use it cannot be bound to again

#

this is wsl 1 though, wsl 2 may behave differently

foggy path
#

I remember how Skype used to take over port 80

#

everyone installing Apache: why isn't this working

pearl elk
#

what is this Skype you speak of

#

Is that like MS Teams?

There'll be a threads menu where you can view all active threads in a channel. And there's also a split view where a thread can show up on the right one the app next to the main channel.

#

They say the prices of GPUs will rise again

could be a good chance

pearl elk

dare I say wait till you see the Intel DG2 benchmarks ๐Ÿ˜›

cursive crypt
#

No, it is the north which warms up

pearl elk

its abit funny I was umming and aaahing about paying the low price I did before the real jump hit

#

now Im just sitting here fanning myself with the $1000 I saved

sterile mesa
cursive crypt
pearl elk
#

well if the Intel chips performance is decent enough I expect them to be plentiful and cheap

#

its not like they are relying heavily on TSMC

#

certainly dont expect them to break any world records but that doesnt really matter if the price is right

#

at this rate Im skeptical that AMD and Nvidia GPUs will get down to MSRP before they launch the next gen lol

median wraith
#

@pearl elk My 970GTX is crying since 2 years already

#

I don't want to risk jobs just by waiting more tbh

pearl elk
#

Thats fair, its why I wanted to get my hands on an Nvidia RTX3080 FE

#

we really need some sort of PC game dev card we can show when we need a new GPU

#

oh you create the games I play, better let you go first then ๐Ÿ˜›

#

I still think its problematic tying upgrades in 2D performance to 3D cards too

#

plenty of people doing video editing buy cards like 3090 mainly for the decoding and RAM not so much for the RTX

#

I actually remember people raging pretty hard at 3DFX over the Voodoo 3 because it combined 2D and 3D lol

median wraith
#

yeah the other day posted a tweet about and the people were giving like lol

pearl elk
#

I have an old phone which is probably faster than your CPU if you want to plug that in ๐Ÿ˜›

#

I kinda wish Raytracing cards were a separate thing too, I know thats going to be one of the primary reasons I buy a new GPU since my current one should play most games for a long while just fine without RT

#

they got stackable chips so maybe we could just plug things into a CPU like lego

#

upgradable SOC, ship it

#

dip it

median wraith
#

Yeah I need a whole new PC but the GPU where the first need

#

Well the shader compilation times won't improve as need a new CPU but

broken sigil
#

I can't decide if I should grab a 5950x now since it's available finally or wait for the next generation ๐Ÿ˜

humble remnant
#

Tbh the 3D cache version might be worth it

#

Having extra cache will benefit gaming and/or UE work

broken sigil
#

Haven't heard any rumors on when the new amd cpus might release so yeah don't know if I should wait or just upgrade now

humble remnant
#

Kinda tough

#

Maybe wait for their release so that the other versions go down in price?

#

Idk for sure

light spruce
#

Pretty much whatever you decide will probably wind up being the wrong decision. That's usually how the "upgrade now or wait?" plays out.

pearl elk
#

Theres meant to be a Zen 3+ with some improvements but its tricky cuz you dont want to buy an AM4, if you already got a compatible motherboard its alittle less of an issue

tulip orbit
#

new stuff never gets released until after you upgrade

humble remnant
#

Chrue dood

#

So chru

pearl elk
#

tbh being on first gen anything is a bad experience

#

even if AM5 was released Id wait until the second gen chips

broken sigil
humble remnant
#

I was on 2700 (essentially shrunk 1st gen Ryzen) and now I'm on a 1st gen i7 effectively KEKW

humble remnant
#

Tbh tho first gens are still decent

#

I wouldn't call it a bad experience

#

Except both those 1st gens I have have their weird things

#

Ryzen loves low latency and the Xeon has triple channel RAM

light spruce
#

At least it's not like intel where they can't release a new CPU without making like 14 new sockets at the same time

pearl elk
#

Im happy with my 5950x but its not as fast in shader compiles as I expected, its fast dont get me wrong but it still takes awhile to get through 20-30k, enough of a wait to be an annoyance

humble remnant
#

Shader compiling depends on how fast your drive is for the project

#

(Unless it's an SSD where it basically doesn't matter)

pearl elk
#

part of the issue is there are parts of UE which seem to require a precompile so you cant boot before its finished doing that, its alittle less of an issue in the editor where you can work while it does it in the background

broken sigil
#

45 minutes UE5 engine builds is what's kinda pushing me to upgrade

light spruce
#

So AMD has been pretty good about keeping the same socket for quite a long time

pearl elk
#

Id probably recommend a Threadripper if you want to really speed up compiles tbh

#

Ryzen 9 is fast but its not like 30 mins faster or anything, you'd be lucky to get 10-15 more than the i9-9000k

light spruce
#

oh no... it's an older gen ... with a billion cores

foggy path
#

I was ahead of the core curve with my CPU purchase with the 6900K :P

pearl elk
#

I think Threadrippers are actually half a generation ahead

#

but they are aimed at workstations

humble remnant
#

MORE THREADS

#

MORE LANES

broken sigil
#

Ah might just wait for the new amd cpus, if my impatience doesn't decide otherwise ๐Ÿ˜…

light spruce
#

MORE HIGHWAY INTERCHANGES

humble remnant
#

Tbh after moving to my server I'm noticing just how bad I was bottlenecked in terms of lanes

pearl elk
#

maybe try distributed build if you have mutliple rigs

humble remnant
#

Because right now I can just move my graphics card to the bottom slot and get 2 extra ones to use

#

And yeah, just grabbing a server for stuff might be better than upgrading your current rig

#

My server has cost me like 400-ish$ for something that's good enough for usage and hosting of whatever I throw at it

#

X79 might still be a bargain if you need cores and cheaper RAM than DDR4

light spruce
#

is DDR5 actually going to be a benefit for anyone? Because shoving everyone from DDR3 to 4 that wasn't in a server environment was some bullshit memory manufacturer evergreening

broken sigil
#

That's my thinking too, it's not like I really need to upgrade

My i9 is still really quick

pearl elk
#

Its not just those two things but also theres chip stacking which seems to offer pretty sizable improvements to IPC

humble remnant
#

Grabbing a server and connecting with at the very least gigabit can be worth more considering second hand market is hella cheap

#

Slot in literally any graphics card you can find for 5$ and you have a compiling powerhouse

pearl elk
#

Intel are using it in their next gen stuff too

#

now theyre designing chips in 3d not just 2d so they can shorten distance between important pieces of the components and even share lanes where they couldnt before

light spruce
#

oh, right.. DDR5 is actually going to increase bandwidth

humble remnant
#

Probs not gonna be worth the price initially

broken sigil
#

Btw any news if ddr5 is gonna be backwards compatible with ddr4, don't want to throw away 64gb of ddr4 just yet ๐Ÿ˜ข

I mean I would upgrade to ddr5 eventually but maybe not instantly

humble remnant
#

I don't think RAM really is a bottleneck for many things

light spruce
#

I'm still upset that all RAM isn't ECC.

humble remnant
#

So the upgrade you'd get from matured DDR4 to green DDR5 won't be worth the upgrade really

light spruce
#

god that's so stupid.

pearl elk
#

tbh I wonder if DDR4 is worth the price these days, I remember peak DDR3 being pretty blazing but DDR4 just getting the ordinary XMP profile is annoying especially on AMD

humble remnant
#

Depends on what you do

pearl elk
#

so if you can actually run mature DDR4 speeds go for it

humble remnant
#

I'm recommending old platforms because they have triple/quad channel memory that actually rivals DDR4 dual channel

light spruce
#

It's not; DDR4's only differences: lower voltage, higher maximum capacity

#

Which is why it didn't matter outside of server environments

pearl elk
#

hopefully DDR5 improves on things better than DDR4

humble remnant
#

Tbh DDR3 still offers a solid amount of memory per stick

pearl elk
#

more bandwith is fine but if the latency is 4x as much ๐Ÿ˜›

humble remnant
#

Last I checked you could find 16GB sticks easily

light spruce
#

16G is the max per DIMM on DDR3. 4 pushed that to 64

pearl elk
#

Ive not actually seen fast DDR4 thats over a 16GB DIMM tbh

humble remnant
#

Aliexpress actually has 32 GB 1866 ECC available, although the price is hella steep

#

Although still cheaper than most DDR4 kits that total 32GB

#

Tradeoffs I guess

light spruce
#

ECC is more expensive

pearl elk
#

32GB is bugger all these days, I got 64GB and tbh its not enough

light spruce
#

non-ECC should have died off in the 90s

pearl elk
#

yay for 64bit apps being memory hogs

humble remnant
#

Well, depending on the platform you got, you can slot in 8x 32 GB RAM in there

#

Although even with Aliexpress pricing that ends up at 1200$

pearl elk
#

I got 2x32 but the speed is pretty average

light spruce
#

higher speeds have shittier timings too

pearl elk
#

I coulda got a fast 4x8 kit but I wanted more RAM

light spruce
#

clock speed isn't always the fastest

humble remnant
#

Or you can do like me and grab a higher speed kit, set it at a lower speed but better timings

#

Maybe not worth too much but grabbing a 3200CL16 vs 3600CL18 was like 5$ and the latter can run at 3000CL14

light spruce
#

if you feel like taking the time to do all the testing

pearl elk
#

5200CL14 ๐Ÿ˜›

light spruce
#

I've spent far too long doing it before

pearl elk
#

if my RAM timings fail I have to clear my CMOS, yay lol... cheap mobo

light spruce
#

happens on non-cheap motherboards too depending on how it fails

pearl elk
#

I do have a clear cmos button so thats not too bad

light spruce
#

I literally put one on it while I was doing timings

pearl elk
#

took me ages to find out trying to flash my cmos from a certain usb stick was causing it to fail though

light spruce
#

well, no, it's actually a toggle switch

pearl elk
#

it was formatted all good an everything, it just didnt like a specific USB gen stick being used

#

USB gen 3.1.2.3.11.12.4

#

goes well with HDMI hyper super ultra speed

light spruce
#

hell, you could have dropped the rom into the UEFI partition on your boot drive and pulled it from there

humble remnant
#

2.31213B

light spruce
#

Unless we're talking about a board that doesn't have its own flashing tool built in

#

in which case, I'd be reluctant to flash the damn thing at all

pearl elk
#

pretty sure it does, I was just using the usb at first to flash it up to Zen 3 support

#

it let me flash it without a cpu so that was pretty cool

#

back in my day we physically swapped the cmos chips for that sort of thing ๐Ÿ˜›

light spruce
#

These days, we just solder everything to the board and then throw it all in the trash

#

who needs cpu upgrades

humble remnant
#

Back in my days laptops had sockets

light spruce
#

Yeah, because they have the same socket, but the older board chipsets will go "What the hell is this?"

#

it has to do with updating the AGESA stuff really

pearl elk
#

imagine being able to plug in your PSU wrong and frying the PC

#

everyone is so spoilt with their 24pin

light spruce
#

My only regret is that I never had a Pentium Pro

#

Imagine being the dipshit engineer that thought "Keyed sockets? Why would anyone ever need that?"

pearl elk
#

I got a Pentium D collecting rust in the shed

light spruce
#

Asshole.

#

Like even people who know what they're doing have never flipped something backward

pearl elk
#

I managed to put my AIO liquid cooler on my CPU with plastic still attached to it

#

yay for thermal cut offs

light spruce
#

Yeah, they put that plastic on there because THAT COPPER GOTTA LOOK SHINY BEFORE IT GOES ON

pearl elk
#

Id honestly be more concerned with the film the adhesive leaves behind more than scratches in the copper

#

if something is strong enough to scratch copper plastic wont save it lol

tulip orbit
#

copper oxidizes pretty quick. the film prevents that

pearl elk
#

but thats why you have those little bags of silicate

tulip orbit
#

not by moisture, by oxygen

pearl elk
#

turns out plastic doesnt conduct heat at all

light spruce
#

It does. Just at a lot slower rate than copper.

pearl elk
#

CPU ran better with no plastic

light spruce
#

It also doesn't oxidize at a rate that's going to matter

pearl elk
#

and no heatsink ๐Ÿ˜›

#

what they should have done is have a peel thermal pad thing on there, then I woulda remembered to pull it off

light spruce
#

I don't know how many random copper heatsinks I've got lying around that could just be tossed right on. It takes quite a while to start looking like an old penny

humble remnant
#

Well, usually the AIOs I've seen have a sticker on the thingy itself with the sign

#

"Warning! Remove plastic peel before mounting" or something like that

pearl elk
#

this one was fully clear film, I did see it and knew it was there but was totally preoccupied with doing the paste at the time

light spruce
#

And that's exactly why that engineer that thought "Sure... just bare pins for a power connector is fine" was a dick.

pearl elk
#

its like the engineer at Ford who decided having the 6th spark plug under part of the firewall was a good idea

#

there is actually no single tool which can do that job, you need 2 socket sets to have 2 small extensions to get the job done, yay

light spruce
#

and hope it's a spark plug socket or you're still not getting it out

#

My old 300ZX was the worst

pearl elk
#

I do appreciate these things are complex and its not always easy to foresee the issues but that sort of thing is just like screw you guys we build these engines before we put em in the car

light spruce
#

The original toolkit for the car actually came with a spark plug pulling tool for it because of how deep they were. Still didn't do jack shit for all the wiring harness plugs you had to undo, mounts you had to unscrew....

#

You could swap an entire set on an I4 in about the time it took to do about one and a half on that damned thing

pearl elk
#

thankfully that was pretty easy on my Falcon, but I did snap a plug button. I think it was just old and brittle from engine heat. I put some masking tape on it and shoved it in, didnt seem to rattle off but I will recheck it when I check the spark plugs again

#

I considered super glue lol

#

some engines are made to just come out of the car and then be worked on, you take off the entire front subframes and drop it all out of the car

#

I feel like its only going to get worse too with electric cars

#

all the nuts will be hidden behind one secret nut you have to find to get anything apart

#

then you gotta crack out the heat gun to get past the sealant ๐Ÿ˜›

light spruce
#

secret nut

pearl elk
#

I bet it'll be a lock nut too so you'll need a special ultra torx-epx kit

#

or just multigrips

light spruce
#

You won't be able to get to any of it without taking half the car apart

#

or get parts for it anyway

pearl elk
#

interiors are the worst

light spruce
#

interiors are easy unless you care about them going back in

pearl elk
#

you finally work out the order it all goes back together and it never fits right

#

Ford loves these plastic screws called christmas trees, theyre horrible

light spruce
#

and you've also broken at least one part of it

pearl elk
#

lol yup, I did that putting my stereo in. Glad I dont do it for a living

light spruce
#

That's why they have a lot of them on-hand

pearl elk
#

Ive actually not broken PC components pulling em apart or putting them together

light spruce
#

Because if that plastic is older than 20 minutes, at least one of them is going to break

pearl elk
#

car interior, first thing pop, broken clip

light spruce
#

I think the next time I have reason to do any interior stuff, I'm just going to buy a full set of replacement clips and just break them off on purpose to save myself a lot of time

pearl elk
#

Ive got a bag of things I dunno where they go lol

#

to me the interior looks complete but something is missing somewhere

light spruce
#

There shouldn't be any extra parts... yet there always seems to be

pearl elk
#

see I dont have that issue with PCs, if there is something extra its because I took it from somewhere else or it clearly is an extra

#

its crazy cuz I swear my PC has about as much wiring as my car lol

#

but it doesnt have plastic screws

#

see with PCs you use cable ties to tie cables, on cars you use cable ties to tie anything including trim pieces to the car

#

maybe if PC makers worked on cars we'd get cool modular cars with heaps of LED and radiator options ๐Ÿ˜›

light spruce
#

oh boy

#

also, if you're still using those plastic cable ties in your computer.. you have something wrong with you

pearl elk
#

well I didnt have to cuz I got fancy velcro straps, technology

#

not sure having car parts held on by velcro is street legal though lol

light spruce
#

it's almost as if Australia got the idea to run a country like a prison from somewhere

pearl elk
#

its like Mad Max meets Deathrace over here

#

we just modify cars and then go around killing each other

#

unlike the US which is more like Blood Drive where people run their cars on human blood

I'll have you know I do my own killing

No listing for 3070 or Ti

#

There's a single 3080 Tie for ~1600 EUR

median wraith
#

yeah thats the price here

#

were lucky to find the 3070 lol

humble remnant
#

3070 for 1200 EUR

median wraith
humble remnant
#

I'm really surprised the AMD versions are just as expensive

#

As in, the equivalents in terms of MSRP

median wraith
#

whats the amd equal ?

humble remnant
#

6800/6800 XT/6900XT for 3070/3080/3080Ti respectively

#

But AMDs are at a lower MSRP so they should be a tiny bit cheaper

median wraith
#

well no its lower

#

but no that much

humble remnant
#

6700XT is 1000 EUR here, 6800 XT is 1200

median wraith
#

yeah here too as you can see

#

but is on sale

humble remnant
#

Ain't no sales here

median wraith
#

so the 6700 there is 750โ‚ฌ

#

and the 6800 XT 1100โ‚ฌ

humble remnant
#

There is actually 1 sale now that I look at it

#

For a GT 710 KEKWW

#

It's gone down from 50 EUR to 40

median wraith
#

look at that

#

this is the top notch

#

GDDR5 and 2GB

humble remnant
#

Same one is sold here for basically the same price

#

2700 EUR for one locally KEKW

#

Still a stupid price

#

Huh

#

One of the 3090s only has 1 year of warranty

#

And I'm pretty sure the EU has a minimum of 2 years that stores have to offer

median wraith
#

they don't even list the amount of RT cores lmao

#

they did just on the first gen

humble remnant
#

It's an upgrade of like 20% on the RT cores

#

The 3090 actually has a lot fewer tensor cores, but arguably new gen so maybe they're better idk

median wraith
#

still the difference between 80 and 70 TI are absurd

humble remnant
#

All of them obviously

light spruce
#

I'm colorblind; I don't get the joke.

#

Also still find worrying about RT cores hilarious

soft night
#

Justin there is red glasses what help

light spruce
#

It was actually my own joke

#

Though, about those glasses, some people oversell them a bit. You can't see the colors you can't see. They actually cut out wavelengths of light to help differentiate between colors. So, how effective they are depends on the particular nature of your color deficiency.

MMO games raised more money than Offline Rpg games ? Yes?

foggy path
#

not sure what you mean by "raised" but MMOs are significantly more expensive and complicated than singleplayer RPG games

shell garden

i think he means "razed", as in "levelled to the ground"

#

in context, it is wasted money that ruins the economy

io games are probably a good example of "small online games"

full blown MMO is definitely a tough thing :)

so make it a half-blown mmo instead

stoic turtle

Then what would u touch

foggy path
#

It's fine to go for crazy ideas imo, but you just have to realize that certain things have challenges, and adjust your expectations as such

#

but yeah if you have never done any gamedev before, some kind of simpler singleplayer game would probably be a better start in that it's something you could probably actually finish

#

without spending years learning :P

median wraith
#

I wish this store owners explain me how a 2300โ‚ฌ computer comes with a 500GB ssd, 16GB of ram and a 3070

#

the case must be made of gold or something

foggy path
#

3070 have come down in price lol

#

I think the cpu and gpu are probably like 1200 in total

#

depending on what model of 3070 I guess, some of them are still over 1000 eur

median wraith
#

well no the 3070 is at 800โ‚ฌ

#

the CPU it includes is a 400โ‚ฌ one

#

so yeah 1200โ‚ฌ

foggy path
#

I mean easiest way would be to just ask why the price is what it is

median wraith
#

bet 16GB of RAM and the HDD of 1TB lol cost 1000โ‚ฌ

foggy path
#

maybe you'll find out it is indeed gold plated

#

lol

median wraith
#

don't even come with windows

#

aside from that

#

its just me or the Ram didn't evolved in the lasy 8 years

#

because still cost the same and comes on the same sizes

#

and still waiting for the DDR5

carmine frigate
#

well it still needs a mobo, psu and case

foggy path

200-300 eur for mobo, 100-200 for psu, no idea how much cases cost

:D

carmine frigate

but a good CPU

still don't get that price from the other, here is 400โ‚ฌ under the other one price

#

and have 2 ssd and 64gb of ram etc

#

its like x3 times better

#

just missing fans

#

๐Ÿ˜‚

who needs fans anyway

foggy path

You don't really need extra fans tbh

#

never really been an issue at least for me, I just get an aftermarket cpu cooler because they're more quiet

median wraith
#

the case comes without I think

#

and usually the CPU one is kinda mediocre

foggy path
#

I mean they're good enough to run stock clocks

median wraith
#

to me never was the case tbh

foggy path
#

odd

#

I mean I've had stuff hit 80 C temps with stock cooling but it's not really overheating at that point yet lol

foggy path
#

my apartment is currently 30 C

lol

#

I was gonna put my table fan on the balcony for the night to force more cool air in

#

but then I discovered the power outlets on the balcony don't actually work at all :P

carmine frigate
#

you need to blow the hot air out, its better

foggy path
#

I don't think blowing the hot air out from the window which is the only place for cool air to enter would work very well

carmine frigate
#

it does

foggy path
#

How :P

median wraith

it seems like the performance differences on PCIe 3 vs 4 only comes when are fast moving games over the world on the input/output data and is minimal

carmine frigate
#

just try

stoic turtle
#

How about new laptops , are they any worthy

foggy path
# carmine frigate just try

I could but the air circulation here pumps air out of the apartment already, not into it. So all that'd do is make it harder for cool air to get in

#

or rather, it'd probably not really work, because since the air is being sucked out through the vents there's already lower pressure in the apartment which pulls the air in from outside

carmine frigate
#

well aim the fan at the vents than ๐Ÿ˜›

foggy path
#

lol

#

I guess in theory that might do something

#

too bad the vents are in the ceiling so I'd have to somehow get the fan positioned such that it'd actually work :P

carmine frigate
#

but thats even better

#

i build a few indoor growrooms, so i know how to get rid of hot air ๐Ÿ˜›

#

also i know how to hide the hot air from helicopters ๐Ÿ˜›

#

boom straight into the sewers ๐Ÿ˜›

foggy path
#

haha

shell garden
foggy path
#

yeah probably gonna have to do that but I'm gonna complain to the building management first to see if they'll pay for it lol

#

because they'd probably pay for one that actually installs into the window statically which are better than the portable ones

shell garden
#

but if gpu makers didn't upgrade the revision from 3 to 4, people would bitch about not having the "latest stuff"

foggy path
#

it's fucking 6pm and apparently the temperature just keeps getting hotter, now it says 31 C

#

ffs.

#

:D

shell garden
#

(some) pcie4 ssds, on the other hand, do utilise the additional bandwidth

#

so it's not COMPLETELY useless, just mostly so

carmine frigate
#

for 150ish bucks you can get one of those square boxes with tubes, those displace a load of air and you can use to tubes to get it from 1 point to another

shell garden
#

i half expect current cpu technology to not be able to reach full pcie4 bandwidth speeds, let alone the upcoming pcie5 revision

#

at least for meaningful/"real world" use-cases and not just benchmarking

#

on a related note, ddr5 will be interesting, given the current info on what jedec has released and/or leaked on clock speed and latency

carmine frigate
shell garden
#

i heard rumour that ddr5 has a fundamentally different internal structure to ddr4, in such a way that the timing/subtiming clocks cannot be ported across from ddr4

#

but i have done exactly 0 research on it

carmine frigate
#

they make some noise, but they pull all the air out of ur room in a few min

graceful sequoia

this is all basic stuff any company would do- you might not like it but if you're fine with chrome then there's no problem with audacity

ill admit that its stupidly broad but its a privacy policy and its probably best to cover that possibility

it doesnt mean they are going to force an update on you that starts sending your audio data to the cloud

graceful sequoia

right, unreal engine sends tons of stuff back to epic, you can tell because ahem theyre servers are down sometimes

kind of important to be able to switch them without restarting apps or interrupting output etc

yah, that's fair

yeah, gigabyte tends to give you ALL THE PORTS, which means stuff goes on shared busses

my unreal editor runs at the frame rate of a Disney film being rendered

Isn't film grain basically lights that didn't go through a frame of a film?

shell garden

my unreal editor IS a disney film being rendered

shell garden
#

depends on what type of grain you're talking about

graceful sequoia
shell garden
#

short version: air is dusty

quasi mantle
shell garden
#

again, depends on exactly what type of film grain you mean

graceful sequoia
#

Film grain or granularity is the random optical texture of processed photographic film due to the presence of small particles of a metallic silver, or dye clouds, developed from silver halide that have received enough photons. While film grain is a function of such particles (or dye clouds) it is not the same thing as such. It is an optical effe...

shell garden
#

cos there's grain from degradation too

quasi mantle
#

I thought film grain was from the chemicals in a film roll

graceful sequoia
#

my film grain post process shader has cigarette burns

#

to really give it that authentic feel ๐Ÿ˜›

#

(please ask me about why there are cigarette burns on old films)

shell garden
quasi mantle
graceful sequoia
#

well that too

shell garden
#

when i learnt about that, i started noticing it on 5 minute cartoons too

#

like roger ramjet

quasi mantle
#

Though from what I've seen, anime movies, they didn't have film grain, so I don't use it.

graceful sequoia
#

hmm im curious how traditional anime movies are handled from a media perspective

shell garden
#

ask miyazaki

#

traditional "celluar" animation was done by exposing a single film frame at a time

graceful sequoia
#

ahh, makes sense, and also PITA

shell garden

yah

graceful sequoia
#

but yeah not nearly the only PITA of any form of traditional animation

sage ermine

graceful sequoia

@sage ermine check back on Tuesday

quasi mantle
shell garden
graceful sequoia
#

maybe itll be all of fortnite

shell garden
graceful sequoia
#

for that matter, any digital photography used for modern films wouldnt (natively) have any film grain at all

#

not that we've seen the last great "actual film" film yet to come

graceful sequoia
#

just like my film grain post process shader, yeeee

quasi mantle
#

Or maybe because IMAX are still reels

graceful sequoia
#

^ true yeah IMAX is some amazing film tech

#

its like what 30 years old and has barely been changed and its still pretty amazing

shell garden
#
  1. character designs in all sorts of different poses and facial expressions
  2. storyboards
  3. voice recording
  4. animatics
  5. background art painting, inking the animatics
  6. motion colour layers
  7. music recording
  8. five minutes of bugs bunny tormenting elmer fudd
graceful sequoia
#

imax is from 1968

#

at least the original version is

shell garden
graceful sequoia
#

yeah didnt know about that but imagined gaming the sensor itself would be a good way to do it, assuming post process grain was not good enough and its acceptable to bake it in at the source

shell garden
#

iso100/iso400/iso800 etc., which are film sensitivity ratings, ported to digital photography as approximations

#

it's a different effect. being digital, cmos sensors and all that jazz, you end up with basically rgb noise

graceful sequoia
#

i doubt that gets used that much in big budget works- the financial incentive is for these films to be reprocessed at a higher resolution on demand as far out as possible

shell garden
#

yah. you don't want digital noise at all

graceful sequoia
#

well even if the director wanted it, studio would be like "wait so you want to throw away data at the sensor? um no"

shell garden
#

it's part of the reason why "phone footage" in movies always looks too good

#

the sensors and the techniques try to completely eliminate any digital noise, which phone cameras don't bother with most of the time

graceful sequoia
#

with AR, virtual production, and photo quality fidelity in unreal, we're going to see it, and other traditionally "consumer first" technologies used more and more in the productions of the future

shell garden
#

phone camera be like "moar pixel = smol noise"

graceful sequoia
#

there was a short film they mentioned on inside unreal they filmed and produced in a week or something making heavy use of unreal powered CG

#

and it looked pretty good

#

you want to see some absolutely fucking CRAZY good film technique, watch barry lyndon (dir. stanley "i'm not crazy, i'm just a genius" kubrick)

#

for animation, the thief and the cobbler (richard williams studio) is generally considered the best in the industry, despite never being completed (at least not by the original studio)

graceful sequoia
#

sounds familiar, i think i mightve checked this out years ago

shell garden
#

was in preproduction for like 20-30 years, finally got funding in the late 80s, but the funding studio was pissed that richard williams insisted on his crazy amount of detail

#

unmet deadlines, slow progress

graceful sequoia
#

not sure what warner bros thought they were gonna get here tbh

shell garden
#

ah right, it was WB. couldn't remember if it was them or paramount

graceful sequoia
#

you know i can identify with this guy. with independent funding and ambitiously complex (everything), my game should be out in a few years ๐Ÿ™‚

#

cant rush art

#

๐Ÿ˜›

shell garden
#

calvert cops a LOT of shit for what he did to the film. he ran a company that specialised in completing overbudget animations from other companies

#

richard williams was also a LEGEND in the animation world. respected as much as, or more than, disney, but not as well known outside the industry

graceful sequoia
#

btw, my friend is directing a film for miramax ๐Ÿ™‚ super excited to see how it goes

shell garden
#

ok that's cool

#

but it's also miramax so ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

#

they're not known for making high quality products

graceful sequoia
#

there are ups and downs with them

#

cant think of any storied works theyve carried that i love

#

i dunno about recently though

#

actually tbh i havent analyzed their whole catalog at all

#

still super excited for her regardless

shell garden
#

some day i gonna have to watch resdogs and pulpfic

graceful sequoia
#

yes, you should definitely

shell garden
#

kill bill 1 was good. well, the fight scenes were good, and the soundtrack was spot on

graceful sequoia
#

and inglourious bastards

shell garden
#

but just like every other tarantino movie, it could have done without the foot fetish and racism

#

also vol2 was a massive tone shift

graceful sequoia
#

lmao at the foot fetish, and if your context is kill bill then yeahh i think i know what you mean on racism

shell garden
#

for a movie called "kill bill", the bride and bill sure do a lot of fucking TALKING OVER A CUP OF TEA

#

@graceful sequoia not just kill bill, but also django, and pulp fic, from what i have read

graceful sequoia
#

well wait there's a difference telling a story about racism or that intersects with racism and being racist

shell garden
#

QT writes himself into his movies as a guy that tosses around the N word like it's dollar bills in a strip club

graceful sequoia
#

thats fair, but rarely in the wrong context, which is better than i can say for most white directors who would try

#

still, i see the criticism

shell garden
#

he's also been recorded saying it in real life, without the protection of "it's for my art"

graceful sequoia
#

oh wait i misread that

shell garden
#

and threatening journalists with violence, apparently because he thinks he's gangsta for casting samuel l jackson in everything

graceful sequoia
#

QT writes himself into his movies as a guy that tosses around the N word like it's dollar bills in a strip club
writes himself in ---- yeahhhh thats a good point actually hahah

shell garden
#

with all the industry cred he has, i got excited when one of my favourite (local australian) interviewers did a sit-down with him

#

he was arrogant and adversarial in what should have been a puff piece about his latest work

graceful sequoia
#

guy is not friendly or well metered

shell garden
#

"if you don't like my movies, that's just because you don't understand them. but you'll never understand them like how i do anyway, because i'm smarter than you"

graceful sequoia
#

he is also a terrible speller btw

#

if you read his screenplays, he mispells fucking everything

shell garden
#

i prefer my batshit crazy in the stanley kubrick or alfred hitchcock variety, not the QT or juaquin phoenix variety

graceful sequoia
#

eh fair

#

we've probably soaked it on film i guess; how bout dem games?

shell garden
#

i read one critic review of joker that was like "the reason the fight scenes are so amazing is because they weren't scripted. no one knew what he was going to do. the spontaneity was real"

#

and i was like HE COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE

graceful sequoia
#

which joker?

shell garden
#

the one where robert de niro gets shot in the face for laughing at the wrong time

#

though the same criticism probably also applied to jared leto

graceful sequoia
#

ahhh titular joker, I failed that parse

shell garden
#

difference being that joaquin phoenix's joker was a GOOD movie

#

not one i think i ever want to rewatch, but it was done crazy well

graceful sequoia
#

I haven't ever been super into DC, but actually I've been out of super heroes entirely for years, and really watching newer movies entirely

#

haven't watched beyond I think the first avengers, not really itching to watch

shell garden
#

infinity war was good

#

doctor strange was good, especially after the first act

#

captain marvel was CRAZY good

light spruce
#

Games are bullshit; writing terrible bash scripts is where it's at

graceful sequoia
#

everyone needs a good cumberbatching now and again

light spruce
#

"cumberbatching" sounds like a crime in most jurisdictions

shell garden
light spruce
#

Most games don't let you write terrible bash scripts in them.

shell garden
#

solution: write games in terrible bash scripts

light spruce
#

See: GTFO where the terminal isn't nearly cool enough

graceful sequoia
shell garden
#

hacknet comes close

#

allows you a pretty comprehensive in-game terminal experience

graceful sequoia
#

my actual bash terminal is fun enough for me lol

shell garden
#

bash is basically the girl i cheat on python with

graceful sequoia
#

eww python :-)

#

(I'm mostly kidding though I don't like it)

shell garden
#

"uuugggh i can't be bothered with all the extra effort of classes, imports, all of that, i'll just bash+sed+grep this shit"

graceful sequoia
#

not that I'd prefer bash over python

light spruce
#

I use zsh, but script it in bash

shell garden
light spruce
#

Some percentage of which would be fine as just a plain shell

shell garden
#

not that @light spruce can see what i say

light spruce
#

Speaking of which.. something did not work as intended on the new backup stuff

graceful sequoia
#

spit it out Justin, how many petabytes pushed to s3 accidentally

light spruce
#

pretty sure the windows side is where something shit the bed

shell garden
#

i saw a guy once who was "trying to learn python" by translating a bash script into subprocess calls

light spruce
#

zero. My stuff is onsite

shell garden
#

basically using python to store variables, and all the actual work was done by calling grep, or find, or whatever

graceful sequoia
shell garden
#

yah, it does depend on what you're doing

graceful sequoia
#

because you end up doing N+1 queries by default (this is a rails term which means a query per data item instead of a joined single query)

#

so the process overhead kills it and they are wondering why the bash version they made seemed to work fine

shell garden
#

pipes are pretty efficient in the unix world

graceful sequoia
#

exactly, but the main reason is because it avoids O(n) process overhead

shell garden
#

the other day i was looking for a way to do an in-place edit on a file with ffmpeg

#

google: "it can't be done"

graceful sequoia
#

without pipes, one tool for one job is in feasible

shell garden
#

me: "hold my fifo"

graceful sequoia
#

heh

#

speaking of NOT seeming to do one thing and one thing well

shell garden
#

mkfifo $(tempfile -n) # or whatever it is to get a safe temporary filename

graceful sequoia
#

unix noobs look at ffmpeg and say it's too complicated

#

it should be 50 programs

#

but that literally cannot work

light spruce
#

@light spruce Good work, dipshit. Way to not double quote your variable AND not set the permissions on your zfs filesystems

shell garden
#

cat input.mkv > $temp & ffmpeg -i $temp $processing_flags input.mkv

graceful sequoia
#

cue tik tok "Oh no, oh no, oh nonononono"

shell garden
#

of course, shitdows doesn't have fifos

graceful sequoia
#

it actually does, but fuck if you can figure out how to use them

shell garden
#

yah ok

#

PYTHON on shitdows doesn't implement os.mkfifo() ๐Ÿ˜‰

light spruce
#

it just threw up and didn't do anything.

graceful sequoia
graceful sequoia
light spruce
#

I didn't actually test the "script" before I made the scheduled task in Windows and had it run

graceful sequoia
#

I was hoping for "welp, the backup drive is empty now"

#

not that I'd wish that on you

shell garden
#

i just like the idea of only loading potentially large media files into memory once ๐Ÿ˜›

light spruce
#

hah. "drive"

#

because there's only the one

graceful sequoia
#

hey it's potentially worse when it's a volume, but I'm sure you've got a slick setup

#

still, maybe quote your bash

graceful sequoia
light spruce
#

It was only in single quotes because it used to just be a static include file for rsync

graceful sequoia
#

oh single quotes is just a typical error

#

I thought you meant no quotes

#

meh, not a tremendous amount of mischief can be done there

light spruce
#

it's barely a script.

graceful sequoia
#

with the right situation, missing quotes entirely (most commonly when starting procs from other procs) with the wrong permission setups and a lack of backups off of the volume (maybe it goes to tape a few times per month) you could lose a lot of data

light spruce
#
ssh justin@colony touch /srv/rsync/justin/malfeasance/"${1}"``` Aside from the top part that checks that it actually got sent a parameter... that's the extent of the Windows side.
graceful sequoia
#

so what, the /home/root/${1} was was single quoted?

#

so it did not delete anything (if i parse the command correctly, i rarely use rsync)?

light spruce
#

Yeah. It wasn't a valid path, so it didn't have anything to read

#

It was the initial sync for this new setup anyway

#

I've already got two other sets of snapshots

#

--delete deletes stuff that's on the target location if it doesn't exist on the source location

#

But the whole point of that touch command is that's the watch file to trigger a snapshot after the rsync is done

median wraith
#

Just if I knew a way to cast fake shadows :/

fluid bloom
#

decals? ๐Ÿค”

quasi mantle
#

Or just put a sphere mask plane below it.

quasi mantle
#

Deferred decals.

graceful sequoia
#

why fake shadows at all, im surely missing context

#

just do it

quasi mantle
#

The colour banding in Windows 11 Glow wallpapers kinda tickles me...

graceful sequoia
#

tell me thats a VM and not your workstation

quasi mantle
graceful sequoia
#

well sure as long as its not daily driver

#

i just dont get why (you would do that)

quasi mantle
graceful sequoia
#

what exactly is so compelling as to care

#

just have to have that centered task bar or?

#

the microsoft store updates excite you?

quasi mantle
graceful sequoia
#

the first one is an emphatic meh but the second is quite fiar

foggy path
#

you can finally play Fortnite Mobile on your computer

graceful sequoia
#

have you tried sideloading btw?

#

theres been speculation on how that would work

#

or rather, whether it would be allowed

quasi mantle
graceful sequoia
#

so i know its WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android) but what your describing (an Android KVM in WSL2) could be done in Windows 10 as.... well an Android VM in Hyper-V I guess?

#

im wondering if android APKs can be first class just like Amazon Store apps

quasi mantle
#

Windows 10 -> WSL2 -> QEMU KVM -> Android

#

All of that hassle are mainly just to play anime mobage without shady Chinese Android VMs.

graceful sequoia
#

also side note -- how long before Unreal Engine can launch an Android preview in WSA

#

haha fair

#

you do like your shady chinese anime mobage

#

๐Ÿ˜›

quasi mantle
graceful sequoia
#

the japanese mobage require a shady chinese android VM then?

#

oh wait i think i get it -- no available japanese VM to run japanese mobage

#

in any case -- the tech media seems to be way more excited for windows 11 than is warranted

#

and i just dont get why anyone would daily drive it- whats the point over windows 10

quasi mantle
#

I just don't like playing them directly in my phone.

foggy path
#

my japanese coworker is super into Uma Musume, I should ask him about the yakuza connection whether it's true or not lol

graceful sequoia
#

everything successful in japan has rumors of yakuza connections. probably only half of them are true ๐Ÿ˜›

foggy path
#

well in this case the yakuza supposedly literally own the whole game/company

#

which is a bit more than the usual connections lol

graceful sequoia
#

just a bit
