wsl is fantastic
Why is your setup that complicated lol
I just have an Arch VM in VirtualBox and whitelisted IP in our AWS firewall :P
lol what you miss is that it's not more complicated than what you have
Ah of course
and some servers are only accessible from some ssh bastions
so we need ssh tunnels for most stuff
oh fair on ssh tunnels
That sounds mildly annoying :D
was just thinking of wsl versus virtualbox
yeah WSL is probably a bit simpler to deal with than VBox depending on what you're doing
yup
with vbox the guest additions sometimes break randomly and then you have no idea how to fix it
there is some weird networking differences between plain windows and wsl though
also docker forwards host ports to guest ports for containers too
for instance, in windows, apps can take ports that are non-exclusively claimed by services
so I can run stuff in docker in ubuntu and access the address it exposes from windows side chrome
but wsl cannot do that, so port 3000 might not work if IP Helper service is running
but on windows plain, it works fine
ip helper just gets out of the way
it's definitely a bug not a feature, wsl apps should participate in port sharing like any windows app
why
if the whole point of wsl is to allow using a linux subsystem on windows
I don't really know how it works on linux side tho
because if I start a nodejs server on port 3000 and it works on windows, why would starting a nodejs app on 3000 in wsl fail to work. I had to dig into netstat and learn that this specific service claimed the port, and I didn't know about windows port sharing features before that, so I was thinking in unix mentality, if a port is in use it cannot be bound to again
this is wsl 1 though, wsl 2 may behave differently
I remember how Skype used to take over port 80
everyone installing Apache: why isn't this working
I'm looking forward to hack through Windows 11's Android app thing
Ask Luos to make it in UE4
thats more something that Klemen Lozar would make
There'll be a threads menu where you can view all active threads in a channel. And there's also a split view where a thread can show up on the right one the app next to the main channel.
lol
This is how you can try them out early. It's got strict requirements since it's meant for bot developers to prepare
thinking about getting a new sports watch and HR monitor combo and I'm pondering between Suunto and Polar ๐ค
garmin can just go fuck itself, their web app for viewing data is crap
anyone have any pointers on either one? ๐
Don't have Win10 Pro so don't have Hyper-V :P
Does the 4.27 comes with Epic store integration ?
huh?
guessing games begin
on the edge of the super hot area, I think most of this heatwave is over, starting to cool off a bit
topped at about 40C here. was pretty terrible
glad we didnt hit 50!
yah, anytime I come back in from being on the balcony, it feels cooler inside.... for about 10 seconds...
๐
back when it was 31 C outside here I seriously considered reverting to a child like state and place some sprinklers on the yard and just run around them
in the evening when it dropped to 30C, it was finally cool enough for me to open the windows and get some air moving
I'm probably gonna have to put a fan on the balcony to blow in more air from there in the evening lol
I'm eating hot & chilly noodles.
Ppl in warm climates tend to spicy foods. There must be some benefit of it.
that sound nice
Shin Ramyun great
Kinda expensive here but with a few additions it's great
I tend to slice ham into tiny pieces, add it in and it becomes better
Nah, some fast food snack. Spicy beef + some veggies.
Shin Ramyun is in like a black and red cup
Aah, that from the chinese store?
It's technically Korean but aight
I think I know it.
It's been popping up in the "foreign kitchen" departments here
I mean from where you buy it?
I see ๐
All the local supers around me have those places where you can grab some fine imported goods, like those noodles, great soy sauce or others
kikkoman
They have some varieties, still I dunno which one is the best.
Actually I need to make sure if it's kikkoman or something else
I know I saw it at the super but I dunno if I got specifically it
Bamboo shoots + these garlic mushrooms are nice add-ons to these soups.

if it makes you sweat, then yes it will help
same idea as with drinking hot beverages, you start to sweat
Yeah, I remember drinking all the day a black mint tea in Morroco. With ton of sugar ofc.
it was too hot and humid here for sweating for a while ๐ฆ
You buying?
not sure
will be gpus soon ?
because this is the first time I see stock in almost 1 year
Whack how non Ti is more expensive
I'd jump in on a 3070 Ti too, but I feel like UE would need more vram, at least 10
yeah 8GB is kinda mediocre this days tbh
that's x2 of my GPU, and its 4 gens older lol
I woke up today at the same time as David Lynch. Whoa.
I have a 1060 6gb, so 8GB is not justified
oof, flashback to when this was $499 for 2 months last year
My dilemma now, 3060 12gb or 3080 Ti 12gb? Like, I could playtest games on a lower end card and make sure it runs good, and save some money ๐
and my dumbass was like "herp I'll take the 2070 Super please"
499$ ?
Man the GPUs here never were that price since the 900 series
here cost about 700โฌ for the 70 series since 1000
yeah in europe they invent the prices so
Oh rip
Lol the reviews are like
Pros: Nuclear Torpedo
Cons: Cost the same of a nuclear submarine
@sterile mesa
Spain is out of stock at Newegg
Jesus! And I thought the scalping was bad at the beginning of this year
Does that ship to the rest of EU?
Spain is out of stock, but the trips to Spain never end
*disclaimer: The S is silent
whats the difference between GDDR6 and GDDR6X ?
lol
One of them is XTREME, the other probably locks their doors & stays inside
Okay
They say the prices of GPUs will rise again
and this is 200โฌ more expensive than default price so
could be a good chance
dare I say wait till you see the Intel DG2 benchmarks ๐
No, it is the north which warms up
its abit funny I was umming and aaahing about paying the low price I did before the real jump hit
now Im just sitting here fanning myself with the $1000 I saved
This gif gave me weird Gabriel Knight 2 vibes
$ should fall a bit later I think
well if the Intel chips performance is decent enough I expect them to be plentiful and cheap
its not like they are relying heavily on TSMC
certainly dont expect them to break any world records but that doesnt really matter if the price is right
at this rate Im skeptical that AMD and Nvidia GPUs will get down to MSRP before they launch the next gen lol
@pearl elk My 970GTX is crying since 2 years already
I don't want to risk jobs just by waiting more tbh
Thats fair, its why I wanted to get my hands on an Nvidia RTX3080 FE
we really need some sort of PC game dev card we can show when we need a new GPU
oh you create the games I play, better let you go first then ๐
I still think its problematic tying upgrades in 2D performance to 3D cards too
plenty of people doing video editing buy cards like 3090 mainly for the decoding and RAM not so much for the RTX
I actually remember people raging pretty hard at 3DFX over the Voodoo 3 because it combined 2D and 3D lol
yeah the other day posted a tweet about and the people were giving like lol
I have an old phone which is probably faster than your CPU if you want to plug that in ๐
I kinda wish Raytracing cards were a separate thing too, I know thats going to be one of the primary reasons I buy a new GPU since my current one should play most games for a long while just fine without RT
they got stackable chips so maybe we could just plug things into a CPU like lego
upgradable SOC, ship it
dip it
Yeah I need a whole new PC but the GPU where the first need
Well the shader compilation times won't improve as need a new CPU but
I can't decide if I should grab a 5950x now since it's available finally or wait for the next generation ๐
Tbh the 3D cache version might be worth it
Having extra cache will benefit gaming and/or UE work
Haven't heard any rumors on when the new amd cpus might release so yeah don't know if I should wait or just upgrade now
Kinda tough
Maybe wait for their release so that the other versions go down in price?
Idk for sure
Pretty much whatever you decide will probably wind up being the wrong decision. That's usually how the "upgrade now or wait?" plays out.
Theres meant to be a Zen 3+ with some improvements but its tricky cuz you dont want to buy an AM4, if you already got a compatible motherboard its alittle less of an issue
new stuff never gets released until after you upgrade
tbh being on first gen anything is a bad experience
even if AM5 was released Id wait until the second gen chips
I'm on i9 9900k at the moment, that's what bugs me, if the new cpus are gonna require a new motherboard
I was on 2700 (essentially shrunk 1st gen Ryzen) and now I'm on a 1st gen i7 effectively
Yeah that's true
Tbh tho first gens are still decent
I wouldn't call it a bad experience
Except both those 1st gens I have have their weird things
Ryzen loves low latency and the Xeon has triple channel RAM
At least it's not like intel where they can't release a new CPU without making like 14 new sockets at the same time
Im happy with my 5950x but its not as fast in shader compiles as I expected, its fast dont get me wrong but it still takes awhile to get through 20-30k, enough of a wait to be an annoyance
Shader compiling depends on how fast your drive is for the project
(Unless it's an SSD where it basically doesn't matter)
part of the issue is there are parts of UE which seem to require a precompile so you cant boot before its finished doing that, its alittle less of an issue in the editor where you can work while it does it in the background
45 minutes UE5 engine builds is what's kinda pushing me to upgrade
So AMD has been pretty good about keeping the same socket for quite a long time
Id probably recommend a Threadripper if you want to really speed up compiles tbh
Ryzen 9 is fast but its not like 30 mins faster or anything, you'd be lucky to get 10-15 more than the i9-9000k
oh no... it's an older gen ... with a billion cores
I was ahead of the core curve with my CPU purchase with the 6900K :P
I think Threadrippers are actually half a generation ahead
but they are aimed at workstations
Ah might just wait for the new amd cpus, if my impatience doesn't decide otherwise ๐
MORE HIGHWAY INTERCHANGES
Tbh after moving to my server I'm noticing just how bad I was bottlenecked in terms of lanes
maybe try distributed build if you have mutliple rigs
Because right now I can just move my graphics card to the bottom slot and get 2 extra ones to use
And yeah, just grabbing a server for stuff might be better than upgrading your current rig
My server has cost me like 400-ish$ for something that's good enough for usage and hosting of whatever I throw at it
X79 might still be a bargain if you need cores and cheaper RAM than DDR4
is DDR5 actually going to be a benefit for anyone? Because shoving everyone from DDR3 to 4 that wasn't in a server environment was some bullshit memory manufacturer evergreening
That's my thinking too, it's not like I really need to upgrade
My i9 is still really quick
Its not just those two things but also theres chip stacking which seems to offer pretty sizable improvements to IPC
Grabbing a server and connecting with at the very least gigabit can be worth more considering second hand market is hella cheap
Slot in literally any graphics card you can find for 5$ and you have a compiling powerhouse
Hmm that's interesting
Intel are using it in their next gen stuff too
now theyre designing chips in 3d not just 2d so they can shorten distance between important pieces of the components and even share lanes where they couldnt before
oh, right.. DDR5 is actually going to increase bandwidth
Probs not gonna be worth the price initially
Btw any news if ddr5 is gonna be backwards compatible with ddr4, don't want to throw away 64gb of ddr4 just yet ๐ข
I mean I would upgrade to ddr5 eventually but maybe not instantly
I don't think RAM really is a bottleneck for many things
I'm still upset that all RAM isn't ECC.
So the upgrade you'd get from matured DDR4 to green DDR5 won't be worth the upgrade really
god that's so stupid.
tbh I wonder if DDR4 is worth the price these days, I remember peak DDR3 being pretty blazing but DDR4 just getting the ordinary XMP profile is annoying especially on AMD
Depends on what you do
so if you can actually run mature DDR4 speeds go for it
I'm recommending old platforms because they have triple/quad channel memory that actually rivals DDR4 dual channel
It's not; DDR4's only differences: lower voltage, higher maximum capacity
Which is why it didn't matter outside of server environments
hopefully DDR5 improves on things better than DDR4
Tbh DDR3 still offers a solid amount of memory per stick
more bandwith is fine but if the latency is 4x as much ๐
Last I checked you could find 16GB sticks easily
16G is the max per DIMM on DDR3. 4 pushed that to 64
Ive not actually seen fast DDR4 thats over a 16GB DIMM tbh
Aliexpress actually has 32 GB 1866 ECC available, although the price is hella steep
Although still cheaper than most DDR4 kits that total 32GB
Tradeoffs I guess
ECC is more expensive
32GB is bugger all these days, I got 64GB and tbh its not enough
non-ECC should have died off in the 90s
yay for 64bit apps being memory hogs
Well, depending on the platform you got, you can slot in 8x 32 GB RAM in there
Although even with Aliexpress pricing that ends up at 1200$

I got 2x32 but the speed is pretty average
higher speeds have shittier timings too
I coulda got a fast 4x8 kit but I wanted more RAM
clock speed isn't always the fastest
Or you can do like me and grab a higher speed kit, set it at a lower speed but better timings
Maybe not worth too much but grabbing a 3200CL16 vs 3600CL18 was like 5$ and the latter can run at 3000CL14
if you feel like taking the time to do all the testing
5200CL14 ๐
I've spent far too long doing it before
if my RAM timings fail I have to clear my CMOS, yay lol... cheap mobo
happens on non-cheap motherboards too depending on how it fails
I do have a clear cmos button so thats not too bad
I literally put one on it while I was doing timings
took me ages to find out trying to flash my cmos from a certain usb stick was causing it to fail though
well, no, it's actually a toggle switch
it was formatted all good an everything, it just didnt like a specific USB gen stick being used
USB gen 3.1.2.3.11.12.4
goes well with HDMI hyper super ultra speed
hell, you could have dropped the rom into the UEFI partition on your boot drive and pulled it from there
2.31213B
Unless we're talking about a board that doesn't have its own flashing tool built in
in which case, I'd be reluctant to flash the damn thing at all
pretty sure it does, I was just using the usb at first to flash it up to Zen 3 support
it let me flash it without a cpu so that was pretty cool
back in my day we physically swapped the cmos chips for that sort of thing ๐
These days, we just solder everything to the board and then throw it all in the trash
who needs cpu upgrades
Back in my days laptops had sockets
Yeah, because they have the same socket, but the older board chipsets will go "What the hell is this?"
it has to do with updating the AGESA stuff really
imagine being able to plug in your PSU wrong and frying the PC
everyone is so spoilt with their 24pin
My only regret is that I never had a Pentium Pro
Imagine being the dipshit engineer that thought "Keyed sockets? Why would anyone ever need that?"
I got a Pentium D collecting rust in the shed
Asshole.
Like even people who know what they're doing have never flipped something backward
I managed to put my AIO liquid cooler on my CPU with plastic still attached to it
yay for thermal cut offs
Yeah, they put that plastic on there because THAT COPPER GOTTA LOOK SHINY BEFORE IT GOES ON
Id honestly be more concerned with the film the adhesive leaves behind more than scratches in the copper
if something is strong enough to scratch copper plastic wont save it lol
copper oxidizes pretty quick. the film prevents that
but thats why you have those little bags of silicate
not by moisture, by oxygen
turns out plastic doesnt conduct heat at all
It does. Just at a lot slower rate than copper.
CPU ran better with no plastic
It also doesn't oxidize at a rate that's going to matter
and no heatsink ๐
what they should have done is have a peel thermal pad thing on there, then I woulda remembered to pull it off
I don't know how many random copper heatsinks I've got lying around that could just be tossed right on. It takes quite a while to start looking like an old penny
Well, usually the AIOs I've seen have a sticker on the thingy itself with the sign
"Warning! Remove plastic peel before mounting" or something like that
this one was fully clear film, I did see it and knew it was there but was totally preoccupied with doing the paste at the time
And that's exactly why that engineer that thought "Sure... just bare pins for a power connector is fine" was a dick.
its like the engineer at Ford who decided having the 6th spark plug under part of the firewall was a good idea
there is actually no single tool which can do that job, you need 2 socket sets to have 2 small extensions to get the job done, yay
and hope it's a spark plug socket or you're still not getting it out
My old 300ZX was the worst
I do appreciate these things are complex and its not always easy to foresee the issues but that sort of thing is just like screw you guys we build these engines before we put em in the car
The original toolkit for the car actually came with a spark plug pulling tool for it because of how deep they were. Still didn't do jack shit for all the wiring harness plugs you had to undo, mounts you had to unscrew....
You could swap an entire set on an I4 in about the time it took to do about one and a half on that damned thing
thankfully that was pretty easy on my Falcon, but I did snap a plug button. I think it was just old and brittle from engine heat. I put some masking tape on it and shoved it in, didnt seem to rattle off but I will recheck it when I check the spark plugs again
I considered super glue lol
some engines are made to just come out of the car and then be worked on, you take off the entire front subframes and drop it all out of the car
I feel like its only going to get worse too with electric cars
all the nuts will be hidden behind one secret nut you have to find to get anything apart
then you gotta crack out the heat gun to get past the sealant ๐
secret nut
I bet it'll be a lock nut too so you'll need a special ultra torx-epx kit
or just multigrips
You won't be able to get to any of it without taking half the car apart
or get parts for it anyway
interiors are the worst
interiors are easy unless you care about them going back in
you finally work out the order it all goes back together and it never fits right
Ford loves these plastic screws called christmas trees, theyre horrible
and you've also broken at least one part of it
lol yup, I did that putting my stereo in. Glad I dont do it for a living
That's why they have a lot of them on-hand
Ive actually not broken PC components pulling em apart or putting them together
Because if that plastic is older than 20 minutes, at least one of them is going to break
car interior, first thing pop, broken clip
I think the next time I have reason to do any interior stuff, I'm just going to buy a full set of replacement clips and just break them off on purpose to save myself a lot of time
Ive got a bag of things I dunno where they go lol
to me the interior looks complete but something is missing somewhere
There shouldn't be any extra parts... yet there always seems to be
see I dont have that issue with PCs, if there is something extra its because I took it from somewhere else or it clearly is an extra
its crazy cuz I swear my PC has about as much wiring as my car lol
but it doesnt have plastic screws
see with PCs you use cable ties to tie cables, on cars you use cable ties to tie anything including trim pieces to the car
maybe if PC makers worked on cars we'd get cool modular cars with heaps of LED and radiator options ๐
oh boy
also, if you're still using those plastic cable ties in your computer.. you have something wrong with you
well I didnt have to cuz I got fancy velcro straps, technology
not sure having car parts held on by velcro is street legal though lol
it's almost as if Australia got the idea to run a country like a prison from somewhere
its like Mad Max meets Deathrace over here
we just modify cars and then go around killing each other
unlike the US which is more like Blood Drive where people run their cars on human blood
I'll have you know I do my own killing
Spying on lounge for ideas
Where can I find some nice free character models. I'm wanting something stylised that would fit with the currently free stylised forest.
On the MP
1: Check if you got some through the free marketplace promotions
1.5: See if there's free characters on the marketplace
1.75: Wait until Tuesday for new assets that will be released for free
2: Check out some sites that offer models, like turbosquid
3: If nothing else worked, remove one of the words in "nice free" and re-evaluate your options
Make๐ค
Thanks ๐
I'm sure people would be happy to work for free for me.
technically the 3070 vs TI version is absurd for 100โฌ
still with the same VRam it could at least added 2gb extra or so
just added 0.2 extra clock
For 500$ more you get 2 more GB VRAM (3080 vs Tie)
And costs double
Tbh Ampere hella buttcheeks as a generation of GPUs I feel
Nothing is really particularly exciting if you factor in the costs even before the scalping prices
Lemme check local sites to see how they've reacted to prices, brb
No listing for 3070 or Ti
There's a single 3080 Tie for ~1600 EUR
3070 for 1200 EUR
I'm really surprised the AMD versions are just as expensive
As in, the equivalents in terms of MSRP
whats the amd equal ?
6800/6800 XT/6900XT for 3070/3080/3080Ti respectively
But AMDs are at a lower MSRP so they should be a tiny bit cheaper
6700XT is 1000 EUR here, 6800 XT is 1200
There is actually 1 sale now that I look at it
For a GT 710
It's gone down from 50 EUR to 40

Same one is sold here for basically the same price
2700 EUR for one locally
Still a stupid price
Huh
One of the 3090s only has 1 year of warranty
And I'm pretty sure the EU has a minimum of 2 years that stores have to offer
It's an upgrade of like 20% on the RT cores
The 3090 actually has a lot fewer tensor cores, but arguably new gen so maybe they're better idk
All of them obviously
I'm colorblind; I don't get the joke.
Also still find worrying about RT cores hilarious
Justin there is red glasses what help
It was actually my own joke
Though, about those glasses, some people oversell them a bit. You can't see the colors you can't see. They actually cut out wavelengths of light to help differentiate between colors. So, how effective they are depends on the particular nature of your color deficiency.
This has been education time with your host, Henry Bustos, and I'll see you next time with some tips on boating.
I love posting memes around UE5
Why putting one if you can make one?
because im focusing on making the scene rather than organic memes
that feeling when everything's going great on a play test and your loading level 4 and then suddenly your player character is flying in the air and then game over. and you use the restart from auto save and it softlocks. gamedev life
at least it was entertaining
if your game doesn't have fun glitches, it's not worth playing
oh jebus
bridge constructor walking dead
who the hell thought that was a good idea
guess we'll find out next week when it's free

MMO games raised more money than Offline Rpg games ? Yes?
not sure what you mean by "raised" but MMOs are significantly more expensive and complicated than singleplayer RPG games
i think he means "razed", as in "levelled to the ground"
in context, it is wasted money that ruins the economy
How can an individual make an mmo , whereโd he rent a server
their mum's basement, duh
I donโt have a basement
are you a mother?
Nope
well there's your problem then
you need a mother with a basement
Damn
mmos are not big deal
Any server provider. AWS and Azure are used a lot I think
@stoic turtle just forget about it, impossible. Make small games instead
@unborn lotus indeed but canโt it be a small online games
io games are probably a good example of "small online games"
agar.io and what have you
full blown MMO is definitely a tough thing :)
so make it a half-blown mmo instead
yes, moustache
one thing i wish EGS would have is an indicator of how much download is needed before you click the "yes download this please" button
I wouldnt touch anything online as a solo dev, too much work or stuff that can go wrong and way too hard to make and maintain a player base
Anything less than open world mmo rpg story based and physically correct animations is not worthy for solo dev.
Honestly I wouldnt touch any characters either , too hard ๐ no AI either
Then what would u touch
It's fine to go for crazy ideas imo, but you just have to realize that certain things have challenges, and adjust your expectations as such
but yeah if you have never done any gamedev before, some kind of simpler singleplayer game would probably be a better start in that it's something you could probably actually finish
without spending years learning :P
I wish this store owners explain me how a 2300โฌ computer comes with a 500GB ssd, 16GB of ram and a 3070
the case must be made of gold or something
3070 have come down in price lol
I think the cpu and gpu are probably like 1200 in total
depending on what model of 3070 I guess, some of them are still over 1000 eur
well no the 3070 is at 800โฌ
the CPU it includes is a 400โฌ one
so yeah 1200โฌ
I mean easiest way would be to just ask why the price is what it is
bet 16GB of RAM and the HDD of 1TB lol cost 1000โฌ
don't even come with windows
aside from that
its just me or the Ram didn't evolved in the lasy 8 years
because still cost the same and comes on the same sizes
and still waiting for the DDR5
well it still needs a mobo, psu and case
i7 doesnt say verry much tho, could be a cpu from 10 years back ๐
says 11700K in the title
I mean it'll be close to 2k I think in total price with everything
so maybe it's not really that far off :P
ahh k, i dont fully read stuff, i find it not really needed to comment on stuff ๐
Me having a PCe v3 checking for new GPUs speeds and performance
๐ค ๐
2 FPS what a hardware upgrade
Yeah at the end you end in 2000โฌ without a decent GPU
but a good CPU
still don't get that price from the other, here is 400โฌ under the other one price
and have 2 ssd and 64gb of ram etc
its like x3 times better
just missing fans
๐
who needs fans anyway
You don't really need extra fans tbh
never really been an issue at least for me, I just get an aftermarket cpu cooler because they're more quiet
I mean they're good enough to run stock clocks
to me never was the case tbh
odd
I mean I've had stuff hit 80 C temps with stock cooling but it's not really overheating at that point yet lol
spain gets hot in the summer ๐
my apartment is currently 30 C
lol
I was gonna put my table fan on the balcony for the night to force more cool air in
but then I discovered the power outlets on the balcony don't actually work at all :P
you need to blow the hot air out, its better
I don't think blowing the hot air out from the window which is the only place for cool air to enter would work very well
it does
How :P
it seems like the performance differences on PCIe 3 vs 4 only comes when are fast moving games over the world on the input/output data and is minimal
just try
I could but the air circulation here pumps air out of the apartment already, not into it. So all that'd do is make it harder for cool air to get in
or rather, it'd probably not really work, because since the air is being sucked out through the vents there's already lower pressure in the apartment which pulls the air in from outside
well aim the fan at the vents than ๐
lol
I guess in theory that might do something
too bad the vents are in the ceiling so I'd have to somehow get the fan positioned such that it'd actually work :P
but thats even better
i build a few indoor growrooms, so i know how to get rid of hot air ๐
also i know how to hide the hot air from helicopters ๐
boom straight into the sewers ๐
haha
yah gpus just don't need pcie4 bandwidth at the moment
yeah probably gonna have to do that but I'm gonna complain to the building management first to see if they'll pay for it lol
because they'd probably pay for one that actually installs into the window statically which are better than the portable ones
but if gpu makers didn't upgrade the revision from 3 to 4, people would bitch about not having the "latest stuff"
it's fucking 6pm and apparently the temperature just keeps getting hotter, now it says 31 C
ffs.
:D
(some) pcie4 ssds, on the other hand, do utilise the additional bandwidth
so it's not COMPLETELY useless, just mostly so
for 150ish bucks you can get one of those square boxes with tubes, those displace a load of air and you can use to tubes to get it from 1 point to another
i half expect current cpu technology to not be able to reach full pcie4 bandwidth speeds, let alone the upcoming pcie5 revision
at least for meaningful/"real world" use-cases and not just benchmarking
on a related note, ddr5 will be interesting, given the current info on what jedec has released and/or leaked on clock speed and latency
i heard rumour that ddr5 has a fundamentally different internal structure to ddr4, in such a way that the timing/subtiming clocks cannot be ported across from ddr4
but i have done exactly 0 research on it
they make some noise, but they pull all the air out of ur room in a few min
suffice it to say, i don't have money to pick up a discarded pc off the street, so my next system upgrade is no doubt going to be ddr5 or later
you guys got some strange lookin subwoofers
at which point it won't matter to me what the underlying technology IS, how many nanometres the process is, or whatever
new pc is new pc
and it still gonna be amd-based, unless intel drastically changes their prices and allows similar performance-per-dollar ratios
they should start making luxury CPUs
I'm sure there'd be a market for that at this point
Fully dynamic time of day with procedural building tech done @UnrealEngine
#ue5 #visualeffects #techart #lighting #postapocalyptic #nature #props #cars #texturing #rendering #lighting #leveldesign #realtime #gameart #indiedev #gamedev #3dart #unrealengine #screenshotsaturday https://t.co/91InGmDA94
Technically with Nanite and such things this should better to manage ?
Because before all these procedural techs where kinda costly in realtime due all the small elements
mainly for far vistas
ew, vista
they kinda already do. intel 11900k
CPUs do need more gold bling tbh, maybe some diamantes
rgb thermal paste
with glitter
Finns give you vasta

amd cpus are buggy this days as soneones claim?
When you spend hours debugging why an animation thing is laggy and realize its because something ELSE TOO is bound to your test button
do you think pixar released USD as their way of "contributing to society", so they wouldn't get sued by the US government, like AT&T did when they were forced to take a % of their earnings and create a research lab? Is nvidia doing the same with omniverse? are they creating these things to try and level the playing field from competitors? I just don't understand
Didn't someone post clips of that game on #work-in-progress
yeah not sure, I definitely saw bits of that somewhere ๐ค
or something extremely similar
Some people are getting over paranoid because Audacity no longer """"indie""""
well the data collection clauses on it were a bit strange
I wonder how many flying undesirables are going to be in my apartment if I leave the balcony door open for the night...
but gotta do that because the damn apartment is like 30 C and it won't cool down otherwise :P
yeah I know hard-drive is satire but that is a rather bizarre headline still :D
I don't give a shit if it gets my foley work done.
Yeah I guess it doesn't make a huge difference but it's the principle of "why would you need to do that you stupid software vendor"
Psh
Play My Summer Car and fill the van with fireworks
It'll slow the game to a crawl just to have that many, I think I had like 5 fps
and it won't even crash when you blow them all up!
That piss poor BeamNG clone?
I think the only thing it has in common with BeamNG is that you can drive a car in both games :P
no try, only don't
It's not like Epic doesn't collect usage data in Unreal Engine anyway
Guess stalling someone's work is more important
Well, I'm picking fight with those damn FOSS people.
Wish me having fun.
Yep, I had quite of fun fighting them.
check your dates
was just posting to show the existence of program to peeps in lounge chat
the fireworks start going off and slackers goes dark ๐ many a hotdog being eaten im sure
ew fireworks
LA is a battleground (of fireworks) rn
It's GTA Online alright
So my fight with those people haven't ended yet, but I guess I have talent to be a scambaiter.
I trolled them with a fake MasterCard number.
I was imagining him in a fistfight screaming "proprietary code!" and "digital rights management!" while pounding the teeth out of a giant stuffed animal.
but, but, you are being imprisoned by your software!!
the software has rights too you know
hah, twitter
I don't think twitter is open source.
true, irony
I'm all for open source, but free software zealots.... more power to them but the dogma is a bit much
was it about unreal or?
are we all talking about the same "foss" here?
About me using latest version of Audacity
free and open source software, is there another FOSS?
the TENACITY
lol
the fuck are you throwing credit card numbers, fake or not, at audacity users on twitter?
Trolling
so you're proud to be an asshole
I don't think that's trolling.
it's not trolling. it's just being an idiot
Either way I win.
wait wtf are they talking about
He's being trolled.
yah sure, YOU win
Audacity being no longer """"indie"""" and buzwords about spyware
I'm not getting paid nor paying for ratios.
- has the spyware claim actually been validated?
this is all basic stuff any company would do- you might not like it but if you're fine with chrome then there's no problem with audacity
ill admit that its stupidly broad but its a privacy policy and its probably best to cover that possibility
it doesnt mean they are going to force an update on you that starts sending your audio data to the cloud
Also the same thing with Unreal Engine and Epic.
so the only person claiming they're spying on what you're recording is @quasi mantle
right, unreal engine sends tons of stuff back to epic, you can tell because ahem theyre servers are down sometimes
and you see it trying to send stuff
frankly, if it means theyll fix the hundreds of bugs we all run into on a daily basis ive got no problem with it
now look, IF audacity starts sending all the audio to the cloud
also: is there an opt-out of the analytics collection?
that is a different matter
avid does this with pro tools (but it's opt-in, even on their gross free version)
i wonder how many gigs of data they have to store from that system
They would've get a lawsuit by companies who used it.
audio isnt too big, i bet they are pulling it in some form of light compression
yeah. for sure.
point is that exactly 0 people are claiming that's what they're ACTUALLY DOING NOW
right, they are like ISNT THIS SCARY, IT LOOKS POSSIBLE MAYBE ONE DAY I GUESS
sigh
well fwiw i dont like audacity
i heard it has got better, but im a music guy and youll pry (the proprietary) flstudio out of my cold dead hands
OpenMPT still a good alternative
heh nahhhh, ive used FL for ten years at least
never going to change my DAW
i guess im a fanboy
i'm a protools user in general, because that's what i was taught at college/uni
And I've been using trackers for years. Mainly OpenMPT and Schism
but ardour seems very nice
ardour is an interesting one
i always found audacity clunky to use
ardour + jack can be very powerful but jack is a pain to configure BUT
PipeWire is amazing
Though ironically I still can't compose platinum certified musics
pipewire?
Yeah! it's JACK + PulseAudio + Desktop Sharing with node based configuration
since its JACK compatible, you can use qjackctl to get a great way to visually build audio pipelines between applications
ew jack + pulse
no no no
it reimplements these
^^ good article on it
i left desktop linux a long long time ago, but damn, i wish i had something like this on windows
i don't like pulseaudio but these days it's the closest to "just works" for semi-complex setups
Audacity is a bit clunky, but I've experienced with it for years too.
it does the job of straightforward audio recording and editing for sure
shoulda just been alsa + dmix ๐
I know the workarounds for achieving many tasks, and know a teeny bit of Nyquist.
And also create sound effects for my Unreal projects.
"PulseAudio brought some really nice features to Linux, like moving sound streams between devices and dynamically resampling streams as needed."
something alsa/dmix cant do
i had a firewire audio interface for a while, configured it with jack
once i found the right tools, it all worked nicely
is Nyquist the name of a feature or language or system or do you just mean Shannon/Nyquist?
yah i understand its advantages for user friendliness
Audacity's scripting language
I wouldn't call that user friendliness per se, just basic features that are needed
but i still think the real solution would have been alsa plugins
I have some 5 or 6 different audio interfaces on my machine
kind of important to be able to switch them without restarting apps or interrupting output etc
yah, that's fair
also weirdos wanting bluetooth headphones to swap between devices and stuff like that
I call that one "the dream", I'm eying up the new Sony wh1000s but the Bluetooth swapping is not as seamless or capable as I'd really want :-/
only annoying thing for me these days is my interface doesn't have native linux drivers, unless i plug it in over firewire
and firewire doesn't exist anymore ... ๐
now that I use Bluetooth (headphones) for my phone, I'd love to be able to just keep the same headset unless I need my Sennheiser hd 6xx or my overhead speakers etc
i do have a pci-e firewire card but i'm pretty sure my 2nd nvme is using up the channels that it would have plugged into
i upgraded to rtx 3080ti (finally, from 1080ti) last week and I noticed that I do have a second nvme
but yeah unfortunately a lot of the lanes on my board are shared as well
no, intel
gigabyte mobo, I like their mobos but they are shit about shared lanes
yeah, gigabyte tends to give you ALL THE PORTS, which means stuff goes on shared busses
it's an older Intel, Skylake i7-7700, but it should be more than enough if the mobo is set up right
itching to jump to amd 5950x tho
i'd like to do a service on my desktop, blow out the dust, repaste the thermal compounds, double-check the gpu thermal pads from the last repaste i did ๐
just because i can't afford to upgrade any of it
but i don't have a datavac
only need aud$160
but that's also aud$200 more than i have
amd is killing it rn, but the one downside of switching to 5950x is that it's literally the tail end of the socket
It's actually happened in UE4 with SSGI
ok, turning it on then
i want a UI made out of 100% global illumination
real-time raytraced menu bar
none of that denoising crap either
AMD powered raytracing
it's not noisy, it's film grain ๐
lol I did mean just run more rays but yeah it's a feature not a bug
my unreal editor runs at the frame rate of a Disney film being rendered
Isn't film grain basically lights that didn't go through a frame of a film?
my unreal editor IS a disney film being rendered
kind of
depends on what type of grain you're talking about
i think it's more than just that but somehat
short version: air is dusty
As in films used to shoot for movies
again, depends on exactly what type of film grain you mean
Film grain or granularity is the random optical texture of processed photographic film due to the presence of small particles of a metallic silver, or dye clouds, developed from silver halide that have received enough photons. While film grain is a function of such particles (or dye clouds) it is not the same thing as such. It is an optical effe...
cos there's grain from degradation too
I thought film grain was from the chemicals in a film roll
my film grain post process shader has cigarette burns
to really give it that authentic feel ๐
(please ask me about why there are cigarette burns on old films)
does it have that burnt dot every 20 minutes, to indicate the projectionist needs to swap reels?
Because people back then were heavy smokers?
well that too
when i learnt about that, i started noticing it on 5 minute cartoons too
like roger ramjet
Though from what I've seen, anime movies, they didn't have film grain, so I don't use it.
hmm im curious how traditional anime movies are handled from a media perspective
ask miyazaki
traditional "celluar" animation was done by exposing a single film frame at a time
ahh, makes sense, and also PITA
yah
but yeah not nearly the only PITA of any form of traditional animation
it's kinda crazy how much work goes into hand-drawn animation
@sage ermine check back on Tuesday
I'm referring to more modern one, not the classical Ghiblis
hopefully money
maybe itll be all of fortnite
no film grain because it's digital all the way
for that matter, any digital photography used for modern films wouldnt (natively) have any film grain at all
not that we've seen the last great "actual film" film yet to come
They're just added in post
just like my film grain post process shader, yeeee
Or maybe because IMAX are still reels
^ true yeah IMAX is some amazing film tech
its like what 30 years old and has barely been changed and its still pretty amazing
- character designs in all sorts of different poses and facial expressions
- storyboards
- voice recording
- animatics
- background art painting, inking the animatics
- motion colour layers
- music recording
- five minutes of bugs bunny tormenting elmer fudd
digital cameras have a "virtual" film grain, which is basically a gain dial on how sensitive the sensor should be
yeah didnt know about that but imagined gaming the sensor itself would be a good way to do it, assuming post process grain was not good enough and its acceptable to bake it in at the source
iso100/iso400/iso800 etc., which are film sensitivity ratings, ported to digital photography as approximations
it's a different effect. being digital, cmos sensors and all that jazz, you end up with basically rgb noise
i doubt that gets used that much in big budget works- the financial incentive is for these films to be reprocessed at a higher resolution on demand as far out as possible
yah. you don't want digital noise at all
well even if the director wanted it, studio would be like "wait so you want to throw away data at the sensor? um no"
it's part of the reason why "phone footage" in movies always looks too good
the sensors and the techniques try to completely eliminate any digital noise, which phone cameras don't bother with most of the time
with AR, virtual production, and photo quality fidelity in unreal, we're going to see it, and other traditionally "consumer first" technologies used more and more in the productions of the future
phone camera be like "moar pixel = smol noise"
there was a short film they mentioned on inside unreal they filmed and produced in a week or something making heavy use of unreal powered CG
and it looked pretty good
you want to see some absolutely fucking CRAZY good film technique, watch barry lyndon (dir. stanley "i'm not crazy, i'm just a genius" kubrick)
for animation, the thief and the cobbler (richard williams studio) is generally considered the best in the industry, despite never being completed (at least not by the original studio)
sounds familiar, i think i mightve checked this out years ago
was in preproduction for like 20-30 years, finally got funding in the late 80s, but the funding studio was pissed that richard williams insisted on his crazy amount of detail
unmet deadlines, slow progress
ah right, it was WB. couldn't remember if it was them or paramount
you know i can identify with this guy. with independent funding and ambitiously complex (everything), my game should be out in a few years ๐
cant rush art
๐
calvert cops a LOT of shit for what he did to the film. he ran a company that specialised in completing overbudget animations from other companies
richard williams was also a LEGEND in the animation world. respected as much as, or more than, disney, but not as well known outside the industry
btw, my friend is directing a film for miramax ๐ super excited to see how it goes
ok that's cool
but it's also miramax so ๐คทโโ๏ธ
they're not known for making high quality products
there are ups and downs with them
nah
cant think of any storied works theyve carried that i love
i dunno about recently though
actually tbh i havent analyzed their whole catalog at all
still super excited for her regardless
some day i gonna have to watch resdogs and pulpfic
yes, you should definitely
kill bill 1 was good. well, the fight scenes were good, and the soundtrack was spot on
and inglourious bastards
but just like every other tarantino movie, it could have done without the foot fetish and racism
also vol2 was a massive tone shift
lmao at the foot fetish, and if your context is kill bill then yeahh i think i know what you mean on racism
for a movie called "kill bill", the bride and bill sure do a lot of fucking TALKING OVER A CUP OF TEA
@graceful sequoia not just kill bill, but also django, and pulp fic, from what i have read
well wait there's a difference telling a story about racism or that intersects with racism and being racist
QT writes himself into his movies as a guy that tosses around the N word like it's dollar bills in a strip club
thats fair, but rarely in the wrong context, which is better than i can say for most white directors who would try
still, i see the criticism
he's also been recorded saying it in real life, without the protection of "it's for my art"
oh wait i misread that
and threatening journalists with violence, apparently because he thinks he's gangsta for casting samuel l jackson in everything
QT writes himself into his movies as a guy that tosses around the N word like it's dollar bills in a strip club
writes himself in ---- yeahhhh thats a good point actually hahah
with all the industry cred he has, i got excited when one of my favourite (local australian) interviewers did a sit-down with him
he was arrogant and adversarial in what should have been a puff piece about his latest work
guy is not friendly or well metered
"if you don't like my movies, that's just because you don't understand them. but you'll never understand them like how i do anyway, because i'm smarter than you"
he is also a terrible speller btw
if you read his screenplays, he mispells fucking everything
i prefer my batshit crazy in the stanley kubrick or alfred hitchcock variety, not the QT or juaquin phoenix variety
i read one critic review of joker that was like "the reason the fight scenes are so amazing is because they weren't scripted. no one knew what he was going to do. the spontaneity was real"
and i was like HE COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE
which joker?
the one where robert de niro gets shot in the face for laughing at the wrong time
though the same criticism probably also applied to jared leto
ahhh titular joker, I failed that parse
difference being that joaquin phoenix's joker was a GOOD movie
not one i think i ever want to rewatch, but it was done crazy well
I haven't ever been super into DC, but actually I've been out of super heroes entirely for years, and really watching newer movies entirely
haven't watched beyond I think the first avengers, not really itching to watch
infinity war was good
doctor strange was good, especially after the first act
captain marvel was CRAZY good
Games are bullshit; writing terrible bash scripts is where it's at
everyone needs a good cumberbatching now and again
"cumberbatching" sounds like a crime in most jurisdictions
why not both?
it's true ๐
Most games don't let you write terrible bash scripts in them.
solution: write games in terrible bash scripts
See: GTFO where the terminal isn't nearly cool enough
is this a stealth announcement of bash simulator 2021?
my actual bash terminal is fun enough for me lol
bash is basically the girl i cheat on python with
"uuugggh i can't be bothered with all the extra effort of classes, imports, all of that, i'll just bash+sed+grep this shit"
not that I'd prefer bash over python
I use zsh, but script it in bash
same
Some percentage of which would be fine as just a plain shell
not that @light spruce can see what i say
Speaking of which.. something did not work as intended on the new backup stuff
spit it out Justin, how many petabytes pushed to s3 accidentally
pretty sure the windows side is where something shit the bed
i saw a guy once who was "trying to learn python" by translating a bash script into subprocess calls
zero. My stuff is onsite
basically using python to store variables, and all the actual work was done by calling grep, or find, or whatever
what's amazing about using bash from a real programming language is how utterly inefficient it can become, when the same thing in bash would have been orders of magnitude faster
yah, it does depend on what you're doing
because you end up doing N+1 queries by default (this is a rails term which means a query per data item instead of a joined single query)
so the process overhead kills it and they are wondering why the bash version they made seemed to work fine
pipes are pretty efficient in the unix world
exactly, but the main reason is because it avoids O(n) process overhead
the other day i was looking for a way to do an in-place edit on a file with ffmpeg
google: "it can't be done"
without pipes, one tool for one job is in feasible
me: "hold my fifo"
mkfifo $(tempfile -n) # or whatever it is to get a safe temporary filename
unix noobs look at ffmpeg and say it's too complicated
it should be 50 programs
but that literally cannot work
@light spruce Good work, dipshit. Way to not double quote your variable AND not set the permissions on your zfs filesystems
cat input.mkv > $temp & ffmpeg -i $temp $processing_flags input.mkv
oooooh THERE it is
cue tik tok "Oh no, oh no, oh nonononono"
of course, shitdows doesn't have fifos
it actually does, but fuck if you can figure out how to use them
it just threw up and didn't do anything.
not surprising, like I said, no one knows how to use them
well that's anticlimactic
I didn't actually test the "script" before I made the scheduled task in Windows and had it run
I was hoping for "welp, the backup drive is empty now"
not that I'd wish that on you
i just like the idea of only loading potentially large media files into memory once ๐
hey it's potentially worse when it's a volume, but I'm sure you've got a slick setup
still, maybe quote your bash
a nice uncompressed 16k two hour piece, throw some serious ram at it and let your encoding fly
It was only in single quotes because it used to just be a static include file for rsync
oh single quotes is just a typical error
I thought you meant no quotes
meh, not a tremendous amount of mischief can be done there
it's barely a script.
with the right situation, missing quotes entirely (most commonly when starting procs from other procs) with the wrong permission setups and a lack of backups off of the volume (maybe it goes to tape a few times per month) you could lose a lot of data
ssh justin@colony touch /srv/rsync/justin/malfeasance/"${1}"``` Aside from the top part that checks that it actually got sent a parameter... that's the extent of the Windows side.
so what, the /home/root/${1} was was single quoted?
so it did not delete anything (if i parse the command correctly, i rarely use rsync)?
Yeah. It wasn't a valid path, so it didn't have anything to read
It was the initial sync for this new setup anyway
I've already got two other sets of snapshots
--delete deletes stuff that's on the target location if it doesn't exist on the source location
But the whole point of that touch command is that's the watch file to trigger a snapshot after the rsync is done
decals? ๐ค
Or just put a sphere mask plane below it.
Deferred decals.
The colour banding in Windows 11 Glow wallpapers kinda tickles me...
tell me thats a VM and not your workstation
It's running in bare metal.
well sure as long as its not daily driver
i just dont get why (you would do that)
It is daily driver.
what exactly is so compelling as to care
just have to have that centered task bar or?
the microsoft store updates excite you?
Rounded edges, and potentially hacking through the android VM.
the first one is an emphatic meh but the second is quite fiar
you can finally play Fortnite Mobile on your computer
have you tried sideloading btw?
theres been speculation on how that would work
or rather, whether it would be allowed
As in Android KVM inside WSL2? Yeah, but Andrea isn't having a good performance. The QEMU VM runs though, with KVM enabled.
so i know its WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android) but what your describing (an Android KVM in WSL2) could be done in Windows 10 as.... well an Android VM in Hyper-V I guess?
im wondering if android APKs can be first class just like Amazon Store apps
Yeah, I started experimenting it in Windows 10, way before Windows 11 is a thing.
Windows 10 -> WSL2 -> QEMU KVM -> Android
All of that hassle are mainly just to play anime mobage without shady Chinese Android VMs.
also side note -- how long before Unreal Engine can launch an Android preview in WSA
haha fair
you do like your shady chinese anime mobage
๐
Nah, mostly Japanese ones.
I don't like Chinese mobage (Genshin Impact included)
the japanese mobage require a shady chinese android VM then?
oh wait i think i get it -- no available japanese VM to run japanese mobage
in any case -- the tech media seems to be way more excited for windows 11 than is warranted
and i just dont get why anyone would daily drive it- whats the point over windows 10
I just don't like playing them directly in my phone.
my japanese coworker is super into Uma Musume, I should ask him about the yakuza connection whether it's true or not lol
everything successful in japan has rumors of yakuza connections. probably only half of them are true ๐
well in this case the yakuza supposedly literally own the whole game/company
which is a bit more than the usual connections lol
just a bit
