#

We need to have a serious chat about priorities if that is the case.

light spruce
#

Yeah. It does kinda break the pyramid construction analogy though by the grouping

#

The implication is that you need all of the bottom levels satisfied first

tulip orbit
#

well, you pretty much do

#

cant pursue your goals if you dont have food and water

light spruce
#

I was really just referring to the bottom two levels there

primal spoke
#

You really can look at it as death% kinda.

light spruce
#

Because in.. situations that are not ideal... you're going to do some trading

primal spoke
#

death% goes down the higher you get

light spruce
#

Where you'll give up rest for security

primal spoke
#

You'll die without rest tho.

light spruce
#

or you're weighing a source of food/water against the safety aspect

primal spoke
#

So its only temporary.

#

You can't completely forgo food.

light spruce
#

Well, sure.. if you aren't considering a timeline ever

tulip orbit
#

the pyramid is more of an overall generalality of needs. There's always exceptions.

primal spoke
#

But you can literally get punched in the face everyday for the rest of your life.

#

or abused.

light spruce
#

well

#

to a point

primal spoke
#

but you gotta eat sleep and drink

#

gotta

tulip orbit
#

how do you eat sleep?

light spruce
#

You can go way off the rails on that one

primal spoke
light spruce
#

Because, while technically, you need those things to survive... it's not really a hierarchy that holds true if you don't want to

primal spoke
#

But thats actually a good skill for a monster or something. They eat your sleep.

#

I call dibs.

light spruce
#

I do enjoy that "warmth" is in there

#

Not ... "temperature that you can survive"

primal spoke
#

Also, I don't recall seeing warmth on other examples, tbh.

#

what does that even mean? lol

#

warmth is uber subjective.

#

Definitely shouldn't be there. I'm not risking my life to move from being cool to being warm.

#

So...I would say....bad chart.

light spruce
#

"However, it has been pointed out that, although the ideas behind the hierarchy are Maslow's, the pyramid itself does not exist anywhere in Maslow's original work.[9]"

#

So, a step beyond bad chart

#

My takeaway from this: It's a rough concept that people can see and understand... parts of it are unscientific... and aspects of it have been portrayed as more rigid than they really are

#

So, not too different from my argument that there's some trading to be considered along a timeline. Then again... it's psychology. And psychology has a rough time as a science

#

How long does it take to learn C++ to a sufficient level if you're a complete beginner?

tulip orbit
#

that depends on you, and where/how you learn. so anywhere from 1hr to 10 years

red pewter
#

woops, wrong niagara

regal pecan
#

Probably 2 to 5 years. Depends on the scope of 'sufficient'. My sufficient was "I don't want to learn C++" and it took about four hours.

red pewter
#

UE4++ is a fair amount different from regular workflows

light spruce
#

Isn't every skill supposed to be that roughly a thousand hours thing or whatever?

#

I never learned C++. I had to work around not knowing shit about C in general when I had to fix some obj-c a million years ago to ship something on... whatever Apple's store is called now

#

But, not everyone can do that

#

I can pick things up and work with shitty documentation and make shit function

#

And I could turn that into actually learning it if I did it enough

#

tl;dr - it depends on who you are

tulip orbit
#

thats what i said.

#

if you're like me, it'll take forever. if you're a prodigy, it'll take no time at all

regal pecan

10 years could be a 30yo who started at 20, or a 20yo who started at 10.

Yeah, that might have been a valid counter-question... "Do you know any other languages even if they're scripted?"

primal spoke
#

C++ is ridiculously difficult comparitively.

light spruce
#

You kinda have to learn that "syntax is a thing" and "different languages have different syntax" and "holy shit common library functions"

regal pecan
#

Then there's the IDEs and compilers.

#

8.8.8.8 is just the Google resolver

#

As far as I remember

#

Dns resolution isn’t an indicator of your speed

#

It’s a very different thing

#

A ping to resolve a domain to an address is a pretty small packet of data, and has no bearing on what your speed is

median wraith
#

@quasi mantle on the phone connected to the same Lan it loads

median wraith
frosty halo
#

If you are suffering from a slowdown in internet speed and you’re positive it’s not an external factor like a squirrel getting nuked after chewing the wires in the exchange cabinet or your isp throttling you on purpose, and you noticed a significant dip in your speed, you should probably turn off the wifi antenna on your router, connect only one test device via Ethernet cable and run an independent download test by grabbing some huge file off the internet and measuring it that way. Speed tests like Ookla’s or Google’s aren’t guaranteed not to have a priority set on them so the results would show up better than your real world downloads. Grab something big off a cloud drive or a website with a huge download of ā€œsomethingā€ and test. If it’s not as fast as it used to be - your isp is fucking with you

#

If it’s as fast as you normally should get - somethings siphoning your bandwidth.

#

It’s that simple.

#

And yeah goes without saying that to get a clean result you’d probably want to use something like a USB bootable Linux distro that’s lightweight and guaranteed to be fresh without any fuckery on it.

#

That’s pretty much the cleanest way to troubleshoot your speeds.

Not sure which channel to ask this in so i'll ask here. So first off, I'm an Australian and in Australia there are laws for getting games rated, one is an unusual law. That law is that your not allowed to incentivise drug use in gaming, and that drug use should be infrequent and isn't meant to replicate realistic effects. In State of Decay, They have a health system where you pop painkillers, but they changed it to "Vitamins" for Australian players, anyways, I can think of 1 example where this law is broken which is in Read Dead 2.

#

Why is it that you can use cigarettes to get dead eye energy in Read Dead 2 but other substances are illegal? like painkillers?

spare glade
#

I dont think there is a question in there?

#

What exactly are you trying to ask?

trail sequoia
#

Why is Rockstar allow to distribute a game in Australia, that breaks one of it's laws, which is the incentivised use of drugs?

#

not illegal drugs, just drugs.

spare glade
#

Because the rating board allowed it?

trail sequoia
#

I know that, there is also GTA V.

#

It seems to me like Rockstar and other big game company's get preference here

spare glade
#

Probably 🤷

trail sequoia
#

Do you have any drug user based games in your country?

spare glade
#

Which is probably part of the reason why the rating board makes such weird decisions.

#

Considering we live in the same country, you tell me šŸ˜›

trail sequoia
#

oh

#

nah there's nothing

spare glade
#

IMO the ratings board is a joke. In theory it should perform a pretty vital function, but in practice its just a method for controlling what people see and have access to.

#

Instead of slapping an R18+ on every game that breaks the "rules", they just simply outright ban it.

#

Because they feel they know whats best for people.

#

Instead of allowing the people to make their own informed choices (based on the rating) on what entertainment media to consume.

trail sequoia
#

I was also reading that there is a way of becoming a person who can approve games

#

I was considering doing this just to cover my ass if i taboo topics

spare glade
#

Entertainment Media shouldnt be "approved" at all, it should simply be given a rating, then people can use that rating as a guide for their own choice as to whether its appropriate for them or not.

trail sequoia
#

There are some pretty extreme ideas that could be turned into a game

#

but i agree with you

#

I think games that would be too obscure anyways would just be ridiculed by people and they might break non gaming laws haha

Documentation is for finding useful stuff to add to your notes. Documentation often deal with more than you need but not in sufficient detail on what you need. The notes should break it down to the specific things you actually need and add little tidbits you find elsewhere.

Writing it down also helps structure the information in your head, which makes you remember more.

Perhaps this is mostly when new to something. Once you've got Unreal Engine figured out maybe the documentation will be enough. I'm not at that point yet so I'm still making notes.

social media algorithms are broken AF. You can get banned for defending yourself, banned for quoting someone else, and more. It's stupid.

the mods on twitter only turn up when you appeal and sometimes not even then

quasi mantle
#

Facebook had worse bots IMO

fathom wadi
#

the thing about these sites making mistakes, is that a lot of the time people use them for business reasons, or they are the only consistent way to communicate with friends/family these days. They need to have some accountability for it

quasi mantle
#

Doing nothing and you'll get banned.
Heck, even Facebook bots applied cancel culture like behaviour, banning for shit you said years and years ago, as a comment to a post that barely has any interaction.

fathom wadi
#

not to mention that I have only ever been banned from social media for defending myself against others being the aggressor. We should have the right to defend ourselves without losing access.

#

Like the time someone from Insomnia games called me a paedo to her 7000 followers and didn't get banned. It's all truly ass backwards.

#

also tried to stop people employing me.

#

God bless Twitter.

humble remnant

#

So currently I'm being called a p-word for out of context jokes

fathom wadi
#

I don't miss Twitter but I do miss some of the folks who were showing good content. The only social media I really have left for such things is LinkedIn but not as many people use it. However I appreciate the fact that there is less bullying, group harassment, etc. People tend to stick to actual work issues.

light spruce
#

They're calling you a prostate?

humble remnant
#

Nah, they're calling me a ped-antic

#

But it's a mix of out of context jokes and them thinking I'm talking about one person when it's actually another

light spruce
#

Just say, "Whatever, dudes. At least I don't huff my own farts out of a paper bag."

fathom wadi
#

social media is full of bullies who get away with it yet those who defend themselves for catharsis get banned. It's literally ass backward.

#

you can literally get banned for that from the algorithms.

#

All it takes is a report.

light spruce
#

And it's probably an improvement in mental health

foggy path
#

It doesn't take a report... if you suddenly get repoted a lot then yeah

#

it's not a perfect system but honestly if you look at how much shit some people get thrown at them on twitter for completely innocent posts it's a better system than not having it :p

median wraith
fathom wadi
#

There have been times I've been banned on Facebook before a report could be given. It's scanning messages for phrases targeted at who you reply to. Twitter might be report driven but it certainly doesn't have a human element besides that. You don't get a sniff of a human interaction there.

foggy path
#

It's plausible especially if it's a popular user/page

fathom wadi
#

There is a case to be made for automation, but it has to have an almost perfect success rate otherwise there are going to be false positives. Which can ruin a business

foggy path
#

since those tend to get more garbage comments

fathom wadi
#

There is no automation taking regional and dialectical based comments into account. It's also biased based on celebrity and other stipulations. Like Ricky Gervais can use the c-word at people without recourse. Yet a regular person can't use it at all. Where I live we call each other c-words as part of our banter and it doesn't mean anything, but the algorithm will auto-ban you for it. Without critical thinking, algorithms fail to accurately moderate.

foggy path
#

Yeah I don't think that's the case, I can shitpost as much as I want without repercussion

fathom wadi
#

what you think is irrelevant. I've been banned for using metaphors. People have been banned for quoting people.

foggy path
#

It's possible you got reported before for something else and it just coincided with something else, or your account has been flagged for previous violations that didn't result in a ban

#

Yeah I saw your metaphor and it didn't sound as innocent as you insist... I'm not saying you got banned for a good reason at that time, I'm just saying that what you're saying about "you can't say anything!" is just FUD

fathom wadi
#

i never said that. Dont put words in my mouth. I said there are false positives because algorithms and the non-human element draws mistakes

foggy path
#

Yeah I just mean that it's not entirely the way you are describing it

fathom wadi
#

and I would think what I said to the guy about putting him in a burning boat was pretty obvious I wasn't trying to harm him physically.

IN GENERAL, a b550 is a b550, an x570 is an x570

#

there has been a revision to the x570 chipset that improves power consumption and performance in some cases

#

the differences come down to:

  1. power delivery (vrm), important for high power overclocking, where a large watercooled heatsink is essential
  2. ram overclocking, affected by pcb layer count and topology
  3. what ports you want to have, as different models have different usb and m.2 counts

but if you just want to chuck a bunch of components in a box and power on, then with very few exceptions, there's no "unsuitable" motherboard once you decide on your minimum usb/lan/m.2/whatever requirements

#

and the rules around GPL are extremely important to know

#

it's not piracy

#

like, straight up

#

piracy implies copyright infringement

#

yeah, the licenses specifically states that it's not, so it literally cant šŸ˜›

#

the word "pirating" here is a poor term because it really doesn't apply

#

"redistributing open source works" is encouraged

not piracy šŸ˜›

#

that being said, support addon developers

even open source ones

give them money because if they saved you even an hour of work, they extremely deserve it

cursive crypt

Yeah, but at the end the mass is what matters. Or the group of ppl who fall for these words.

foggy path

You should keep in mind that most folks who write pieces like this aren't actually experienced authors

They aren't necessarily aware of the style they're writing in... but to be fair, it's entirely likely that they just don't like microsoft so they put those in lol

cursive crypt

On side note, f Adobe

foggy path

it's pretty clear they're heavily anti-DRM and since this whole tech seems to revolve around DRM...

light spruce

Hence why I said they should shut the fuck up

foggy path

Yeah saying that is a good way to shut down otherwise legitimate research just because they authors let their personal feelings leak through a bit :P

light spruce
#

It undermines their entire point

foggy path
#

Maybe for you

light spruce

Because proper research should be impartial. It's about facts. Not how you feel about it.

That's how science and research work

regal pecan

foggy path

Well either way, they cite microsoft's on statistics and figures later in it, and point out they're false, and that the attacks TPM supposedly mitigates are extremely rare, and existing tech other than TPM's virtually eliminates it

#

but of course that comes after the vitriol

#

lol

light spruce
#

Yeah.. maybe they should have led with that then

#

It's like how I'll never take anyone seriously if they drop an M dollar-sign in their argument

#

I've been around a long time and seen a lot of dumb shit

light spruce
#

People will champion one corporation, damn another.... say that everyone should Linux, but only with 100% free and open source software while completely ignoring reality

You see dipshits roll up in here and think that dunking on Unity devs makes them cool or edgy or whatever. It's the same kinda stupid shit

regal pecan

With TPMs, Microsoft M$ can now let you use that unregistered copy of Windows while also knowing it's a genuine and up-to-date version of Windows.

#

Whereas before they could let you use that unregistered copy of Windows while ... knowing it's almost certainly a genuine and up-to-date version of Windows.

The year is 2022. Society has collapsed from the weight of revelations that Microsoft M$'s real motivation to enforce TPMs was because CEO Satya Nadella had a fetish for true random number generation.

yah i get what you're going for at least

thing is, the win11 with mandatory TPMs is as of yet a LEAKED copy

and i'm way more than cynical enough to suggest that it was deliberately leaked with mandatory TPMs so they can lock out certain types of piracy, or at the very least as part of a wider data collection/usage tracking program

#

my bet is that the rEtAiL release will not require TPMs

fluid bloom
#

isn't TPM just a store for keys?

regal pecan
#

The TPM is mostly redundant. It's useful if you want to verify anonymous hardware data. If you're spying, you don't want it to be anonymous in the first place.

shell garden
#

the mandatory TPM thing is burying the lede though

#

mandatory TPM implies mandatory secure boot

#

they've tried mandatory secure boot in a beta release before

that wasn't even a leak. it was a genuine beta

they are once again trying to make it difficult for you to EVER use anything other than their shitty OS
