Not everyone has the itching. I've tested for many things over the years. Ive completely changed diets, quit smoking, quit drinking caffeine, over-showered, had lots of blood tests and my kidneys and liver are fine. I waited almost 3 years to see a dermatologist who only looked at photos of my hives and said it was thyroid related. So pretty much I have done everything I can except moved out of my house, which I have even considered I am allergic to. I mean, I've ran the gauntlet on trying to fix it.

Honestly, going for Kickstarter has more risk of miss than hit anyway, and you have to prepare for A LOT of PR work.
I think it's better to get funding from your own personal money first, then pitch your project to publishers (if you want to).
Also prepping for backer perks is not something that can be taken lightly.

Ive been present on one (barely) successful kickstarter campaign and it was a month without much sleep and constantly promoting it.
We also didnt reveal the game until the kickstarter started, which resulted in way less buzz than actually building that buzz naturally over time which made it much harder.
In the end we did reach the goal, but along with the costs related to kickstarter and its high tier bonuses, delays in productions it was barely worth it.

@zinc matrix I'd always choose a publisher over private sales. They have the money and workforce to promote the game and already have avenues to get it known and out there. Most of self-publishing is either pure luck or lots of advertising money and work

Pitch to publishers, by telling them about your project as clear as possible, and send them the working build. Your goal is to convince them to get your project going.

Mods and free open source projects often relies on donations, as opposed to royalty share, and often aren't commercialised. Also often times mods and FOSS projects don't have set deadline for completion, thus it can be worked whenever the contributors have free time, even if it takes so long.
I was (and still is) modding games since 2007.
