It won't last long though. The game reveals its bottlenecking pretty quickly, even me as a day one player.

I mean, I would say that my experience was that it was mostly an interesting job, but relatively normal. I never tended to think about how many people would be playing the game I was assigned to at the time. But tools engineering is a bit different to working on specific games, I'd imagine.
I also didn't get to pick the games - just moved onto projects as needed, so it's not like I was like that guy was and was super interested in the game I was on

Hmm lots of things generally. One example is a tool that would load a world, teleport to various locations and record things like frame time, polygon count, memory to build a map of how under/over budget the current build of the game was. Would do that every build and alert team leads if their work was over budget. Then more normal things like implementing an audio engine like WWISE into a game, asset pipeline stuff like data import/conversion for artists.
Coming up with a game file archive/monolith format and implementing it, etc.

the thing is paper2d is a rigged sprite. It's not just a normal sprite. Giving sprites a bone hierarchy is essential for time saving in 2d work. I remember Flash before it had bones and it was a piece of crap for quality animations. Mostly tweening rotations manually on origin points but with no association. We could probably learn a lot from how that system worked, or even implement it into the engine via another rendering method

The customs here are rather weird, putting things on hold quite often, unless paying for a hefty amount of money, which sometimes surpassing the buy+shipping price.

it comes up with a screen this process is preventing your PC from shutting down, so I forced it to restart, turns out that process was the update process
but it gets better
the computer I told to update and shutdown restarts, updates then finally shuts down
its like whats the point of the update and shutdown button at all, might as well only be the restart and update button
