from the core count differences though between the 3080 and the 3080ti, the extra RAM its almost like the cards arnt hardware limited at all but software isnt hitting em hard enough to make use of all those cores

even with the 3090 you'd expect much higher performance for the difference in hardware, the 6900XT does so much more vs the 6800XT and its specs are only mildly different

IMO the Turing GPUs should have lower end ones, and by lower end, I mean a solid entry level "RTX", not the expensive 30xx series.
DLSS can be a godsend to low budget builds, and it would be somewhat a waste if it only applied to high end RTX GPUs only.

Any of you know of oss software that lets you (for lack of a better word) build a map that looks kind of like a google map? Sort of like urban planning, but with simplified drag/drop of basic stuff like road pieces, houses (just square blocks really), and stuff like foliage and terrain. the thing with games vs the real world is that games cheat

#

when you see a dense urban area in a game its no where near the complexity in terms of foundations, just block off a heap of space with a nice big flat in games no worries, its not like 20 different building foundations all bolted together with sub basements etc etc

#

you'll notice it with levels too, in games lots of the elevations above ground match too because of standard heights and whatnot, that can happen in real life but it also doesnt happen so you end up with buildings right next to each other where the floors cant connect at all

#

urban planning can turn into a mess of squeezing in little buildings into gaps so to try to make it all conform to a grid is actually not something that happens often even in the most grid shaped cities

So it's unavoidable. And as you said, rightly, how many toilets and bedrooms can you look at before it's all samey? I hope to offset that with lore and collectibles, but it's nothing that hasn't been done yet. There's a mechanic in the game which makes those interiors unsafe unless you perform an action, so there's that sense of urgency to be safe.

one thing I like about war or post war games is the environment is interesting because of the destruction and can lead the player abit more even in a more open world MP scenario

Mmm.. Interesting observation. Unfortunately my plot revolves around a whole town vanishing in an instant, so there's no destruction to speak of, save for some car crashes.

if you have gates or some sort of design which opens up areas as you go its alittle different to a whole free roam scenario

adventure games tend to do that sort of thing alot, you progress in the narrative and unlock more of a towns buildings to explore

I've got mostly puzzles and threat to ensure that. Some areas are puzzle-locked until much later into the story, some outright blocked unless you play as another character, and some are blocked by insta-kill threats that only disappear on certain triggers. The idea is to keep things explainable. Like my starter area very clearly outlines that you get boxed into a building, and if you try to go outside - it results in your death, but to progress the story you have to enter a puzzle-locked room. TO keep things believable I use lore to explain how the puzzle came to be. SO for instance in that starter area theres a keypad on the door with keys missing, and the lore explains that one of the people who worked there got pissed off with another employee hiding out in that locked room so they ripped the keys out and hid them out of spite, Which IMO makes it a bit more clear as to why there's suddenly a keyless keypad there. I am thinking of using narrative to keep doing this, so that you don't suddenly get the situation like in Silent Hill 2 (I love this game) where there's a clock puzzle in the room and it covers a hole in a wall, but no context as to how it came to be. Like who put it there or why? Makes no sense

sounds pretty good, while Nanite and Lumen are amazing Im sure we still have to keep things within reason in regards to level traversal. It seems to be better suited to slower transition rather than rapidly moving around a large space

I also am trying to play around with darkness a lot. I don't like how some games make characters almost have some weird night vision. If it's pitch dark, you don't have the ability to make out a lot in the distance, so I am tweaking lots and lots.

Interesting you mention that, I had hoped to let people roam in third person and autoswitch to first person when threats were present as a mechanic. But Idk if that's way too jarring. Haven't played with fixed cameras, not sure I like that idea as a constant option myself. Although some games would not be what they are without fixed cam

In terms of back tracking have some free space can help there, you can let people go through a new area on their way through or just have it open so they can explore something they havent seen. If everything is always open you dont get that new discovery as much

Ive played some games which are all open and I just get abit bored because it doesnt feel like theres an attention to detail that more linear games get. There has to be a middle ground in there somewhere, that way theres the best of both, you get open sections you can freeroam out on a farm then other bits in town more where its dense built up and you cant get over the tall fences

Mhm. That's the thing, largely empty spaces are worthless in any decently open world, have to be able to fill it out with something worthwhile

This is where procedural clutter generation could be nice, designate zones for it, and have the game randomly drop lore/items normally not found elsewhere each playthrough

Like if you mark sparser areas with it, you could have something be placed there automatically that makes the area worth exploring, but new each playthrough

Waiting on PoE2 and then I will revisit. I think I've burnt out. My progression was always weird too cause I began as a HC player, then went SC, then SSFSC cause you can't really play PoE hardcore when you have a toddler who tends to come over and twack the keyboard randomly

I know the pain. I was a HC player for the first 2 years. But when I last died to my hard disk being too slow to load in Docks level I stopped. It was too traumatic. Now I play on an SSD though so I might have another run at it before POE2

the thing is, there isn't a build that you can make that will be ideal for HC. Some of the fights are just too insane with the combo modifiers. I've seen super tanks get 2 shot in a blip with no way to avoid it so I see no point if you are only going to play the safe content.

Like I’d love for AMD to be my go to for graphics. But my personal experience has shown me that this cannot be for now. I’ve owned plenty of AMD gpus that failed and in my whole time owning nvidia - only one failed and even then it was cause I screwed up an overclock with safeties off

But what I mean is that if it’s a blend file first and foremost and has a sculpt in it, then it’s the same as a raw zbrush file and can be modified and altered. It’s a source file. And then if you wanna chuck that into UE you just export as FBX. AND FBX can be as complex as you want. There technically isn’t a size limit for it. And next to blend format, FBX probably carries the most source info.

So yeah, FBX isn’t ideal as a start point, but it should never be one anyway. If you have the blend file - modify the geo there and then export. That’s what I meant

hey folks, so i want to make a game based on the anime Attack on Titan. but obviously the story is too long for me given im on a 3 month deadline. So I brainstormed with a friend and came up with something. However, it still feels like it was too long, and also it had more cutscenes than the gameplay.
Hence, been scrambling around playing around with the story but unable to come up with something solid, that's ambitious yet achievable.

I can't even parallely work on the mechanics as it depends on the story. (could be mission based like RDR 2 or could be cutscene driven, etc etc)
