fluid bloom
#

it's pretty useful in all cases

fathom wadi
#

not taking anything away from it's usefulness but they make it sound like you get better performance when you don't. You get your core split on performance between two commands.

fluid bloom
#

a ton of cpu cycles are spent on CPU cores waiting for data from memory

#

it's better to spend those cycles doing something, which is what multithreading helps with

fringe sundial
#

intel is also not ahead on singlethread any more

#

AMD ryzen 5000 series is stronger than any intel cpu core-by-core

#

and it also has moar cores

#

there is absolutely no reason, none at all, to buy an intel CPU these days

#

unless you are minmaxing for absolute value on a gaming rig, going for one of those 6 core but fast intel cpus, which is not a good idea and they cant even do PCI 4.0

#

and doing that is mad stupid

fathom wadi
#

I've Intel since I dropped my AMD Thunderbird chip. Never regretted it but my next upgrade is going amd.

fringe sundial
#

hyperthreading is also something amd has had too since the first ryzens

#

and it works exactly the same as intel hyperthreading

#

just different name, but thats just trademark. Its exactly the same exact thing

ancient hornet
#

Intel might be changing for the good with their new CEO and stuff

#

but this won't materialise until a couple years anyway ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

pearl elk
#

if you like expensive paper weights you could go Intel discrete graphics ๐Ÿ˜›

fringe sundial
#

currently intel cpus are only selling due to marketing

#

amd cpus are better at every single price point

#

outside of some very specific things

#

intel just hasnt been able to improve cpus for about 5 years

#

they have been completely stuck

#

so they just get a cpu and clock it to oblivion

pearl elk
#

OEMs are just trying to dump old stock, thats why Intel are selling lol

fluid bloom
#

it's like P4 days all over again

spark granite
#

You know I forgot about ryzen, they do seem to be competing rather admirably

pearl elk
#

DDR5 though, I mean if Intel get the best performance on older architecture Im not sure it'll be enough

#

AMD arnt competing on price they are competing on features which puts Intel in a very sticky spot

cursive crypt
#

More the better. However, cores any day before htreads (for some number or very close ๐Ÿ™‚ )

iron token
#

I got INTC calls, just saying. It's funny how people count them out

zinc matrix
#

Should I try โ€œThe World Next Doorโ€?

iron token
#

Just wait for alder lake

cursive crypt
#

There is something always better on the horizon. I'm curious too, tho.

pearl elk
#

Intel need something past the lake finally

#

they've been on the lake so long theyre gonna drown

#

See for Intel its not just about hardware, its their naming conventions, you have to spend a week studying Intel language just to know what theyre talking about

cursive crypt
#

What do you mean?

pearl elk
#

AMD look at their line ups, very simple even in the GPU space, its none of the -20GB suffix or other little numbers to trip you up. The worst of it is the 6800 and the 6800XT

#

oh I want an intel one zero one one zero one zero zero one

cursive crypt
#

Ah, for the product names? Like 4970, 6700, 10900 etc?

pearl elk
#

Core Duo was great, nice and easy to understand

#

then i7 was good but they got hung up on it now when you say i7 you could be talking about a decade old chip or a brand new one

#

You say Zen 3, people know exactly what you mean

cursive crypt
#

Well, if you have a diverse portfolio, guess they got confused with names.

pearl elk
#

Nothing wrong with a diverse portfolio but consumers, especially every day, they arnt buying Intel cuz theyre the best

#

theyre buying Intel cuz its what they get sold

#

some salesman somewhere is like yeah sure babe this laptop rocks its got the i5, its an amazing chip

cursive crypt
#

That's how relationship forms.

pearl elk
#

Im nerdy as hell and I had trouble with Intels lineup when I was buying a PC few months back

#

I mean it makes sense when you look at the numbers 10th generation i9, 10900 but thats just the CPU, then theres the chipsets and sockets. AMD is pretty much like duh Ryzen go in here

#

Its crazy because 6 months ago I would have been trying to defend Intel and Nvidia

soft night
#

well intel have so many lineups what dont match and its they mess, but there is things what is good on 11th generation

#

for arm chips well nvidia own that thing

fluid bloom
#

intel's CPU names and branding in general has turned very confusing

#

imo

soft night
#

amd have so confusing naming it own for long long time

remote brook
#

Shit, the job I had today got cancelled this morning, just as I was getting ready too. Time to program instead.

pearl elk
soft night
#

there is risen cables what also confuse

pearl elk
#

But those numbers wouldnt need to change with a rebranding, I just think Intel could use its own Ryzen where it tries to stick to a socket for longer and focus on feature set

soft night
#

what if i could say in future all the motherboard become more modular

#

then you could just swap things to it like socket for example

pearl elk
#

trouble with that is the tablet, laptop and console markets are all the opposite method, its all large single boards

humble remnant
#

Intel did have a solid socket, it's that they decided to sell more chipsets

#

See the 6000 to 9000 series

Where have you seen this nonsense? O_O
JB is not having anything like that.
What we actually do right now is running UX sessions:

  • Looking for people with UE4 experience, but who have never tried JB Rider before;
  • We run a 1 hour long session where we have a video call to watch peoples live reaction to Rider + do some basic stuff like edit code, navigate around and share their experience with us.
As a reward for that we give out either all product license or Amazon gift card, you choose what you want.
All of it under GDPR, not showing this video anywhere, not storing any personal data, for our own production to find where people are looking at and how they are trying to find things that they want to do in IDE.

the more you can afford, the less waiting

dense storm
#

yeah but he asked for base

#

i would class that as base

umbral totem
#

im guessing thats inflated - whats a standard ballpark

dense storm
#

5800X is about 500

quiet narwhal
#

well base for what tho? like browsing website with chrome needs atleast 12

dense storm
#

lol ๐Ÿ˜„

umbral totem
#

dw, not on chrome my friend

quiet narwhal
#

but yeah if you can get 8/12 you should be happy, 6/6 or 6/12 is fine, 4/8 feels bad nowadays

umbral totem
#

firefox is life now

dense storm
#

yeah never get a 4/8 or 8/8

quiet narwhal
#

I had a 2700x before the 3950x and I was content

umbral totem
#

its fine

dense storm
#

you want those threads just as much as core

umbral totem
#

8/16 it is

#

even if i have to sell my kidney

quiet narwhal
#

yep 2700x is a good cpu if you can find one honestly

#

and it clocks nicely ๐Ÿ™‚

dense storm
#

good for price aswell

#

but the 3700X is a bit faster

#

and not much in it iirc

quiet narwhal
#

yep so x700x is a good entry point then based on what you can find

#

I didnt think the x800x was worth the price bump

dense storm
#

but the 3900X/5900X is a briliant CPU for price/performance

#

if you can afford the hike a 3950X/5950X

quiet narwhal
#

yep the base line when you go up to the next set of cores seems worth it

#

when you compile the ue4 editor in like 12 minutes is when you realize the price was worth it lol

dense storm
#

yeah 12-14mins for me

quiet narwhal
#

and you can still use the machine at the same time lol

dense storm
#

depending on system load

quiet narwhal
#

like ugh trying to use a 4 core and compile the engine made me cry

dense storm
#

put it this way, the 2700X would compile work project in around 300 seconds

humble remnant
#

You go out to work, come back and it's done just on time

quiet narwhal
#

and for a point of reference if it matters, the new M1 macs are very comparable to a 2700x and they only have 8 cores

dense storm
#

my 3950 does it in 70 seconds

humble remnant
#

2700 is pretty decent even for a full engine compile

quiet narwhal
#

yep I want to say about 45m?

umbral totem
#

hah - try compiling on an i7 single core

humble remnant
#

Takes one dinner time

#

Including preps

dense storm
#

that is still respectable

umbral totem
#

i gave up on doing anything with source builds until I can re-spec

humble remnant
#

Uhhh i7 single core?

dense storm
#

i hear quite a lot of people in #engine-source saying its been building overnight ๐Ÿ˜„

humble remnant
#

How does that work?

quiet narwhal
#

yeah I was surprised the m1 was pretty much spot on for the compile times as my 2700x

umbral totem
dense storm
#

intel noobs ๐Ÿ˜„

#

jk, but you needs those cores/threads

quiet narwhal
#

ugh... intel. lets put a 2 core CPU in a machine and call it an i7... wtf

humble remnant
#

I still have mad respect for my X5680

#

10 years old but still a beast

dense storm
#

yeah 2010 or somehting iirc

humble remnant
#

It's about half the speed of a 2700 but considering it runs on half the RAM speed, damn nice

#

Cheap to get one these days too

quiet narwhal
#

I started ue4 with my i3 3rd gen so in a pinch anything works if you need it lol

umbral totem
#

same... but life sucks without a proper rig tbh

humble remnant
#

I member compiling on my laptop's i7

umbral totem
#

i've been using laptops for dev for the last five yars

humble remnant
#

But it was at least a real 4c/8t

dense storm
#

i have a dell server, rocking 2x E5-2670 cpu's, thing is fine for me

humble remnant
#

Mine's a frankenstein

#

It started as a Supermicro but I swapped the mobo for an HP z400

#

Half the RAM sticks are aliexpress

#

There's makeshift work to even connect front USB and power buttons

humble remnant
#

Solid

#

Mine has a higher frequency but it's older so maybe worse IPC

dense storm
#

i use it mainly for perforce, dedicated server testing etc

#

at home

#

runs Arch Linux

humble remnant
#

Yeah, mine's about that too, except it's also a sort of backup PC

spare glade
#

Ohhh R720

#

Ive got an R610

humble remnant
#

It came with a Win 10 Pro key and I've used it for that

dense storm
#

i had an R610 (1U unit)

spare glade
#

I dont use it anymore, costs to much to run for how often i was using it.

#

Was worth the money though when i bought it. Used it constantly for a couple of years.

#

Its just a dust collector now.

dense storm
#

problem is they are not energy efficient

#

i have a NAS for my backups, runs 24/7 costs nearly nothing
