"Judge Rogers questioned Epic on when, exactly Apple became a monopoly given that its ‌App Store‌ rules have remained unchanged since the ‌App Store‌ launched, which Epic had no solid answer for, responding only that it was a monopoly when Fortnite came to iOS in 2018. She also said that walled gardens have existed for four decades and that what Apple's doing isn't too different. "They created a platform," she said."https://www.macrumors.com/2020/09/28/epic-games-apple-dispute-possible-jury-trial/

MacRumors

The ongoing legal dispute between Apple and Epic Games continued on today, with a preliminary injunction hearing taking place this morning. We're...

#

I'm more than a little concerned about the uncertainty of UE support for IOS in the future.

#

"‌Epic Games‌ continued to argue that Apple has an ‌App Store‌ monopoly and charges excessive fees, but the judge pointed out that the 30 percent rate that Apple collects is the "industry rate" collected by PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Google, and more. "It's all 30 percent and you just want to gloss over it," the judge said to Epic's lawyers.

In response, Epic claimed that consoles are "different" because the hardware is sold at a loss, but the judge was unconvinced. "There doesn't seem to be evidence supporting what you're saying," she said."

#

::The only thing I care about in all of this is whether we still have the ability to put something on IOS or not.

light spruce
#

That point isn't wrong, but it's a poor argument to make.

plucky pagoda
#

I don't see the difference at all. I've thought from the start that if Epic were to win the argument they're making it would effectively be the end of consoles.

#

I don't know that that would be a bad thing though.

spare glade
#

I highly doubt that, if Consoles were in such danger, we would hear about it....

plucky pagoda
#

If they can't enforce a closed environment I don't see what the incentive is to put so much into them.

spare glade
#

Simply closing off competition isnt enough?

plucky pagoda
#

I don't follow.

#

The same argument that supports that anyone should be allowed to have their own app store on IOS would seem to apply to consoles too.

light spruce
#

It's true that console hardware is subsidized by software sales, and without that percentage, that market would be a lot smaller because the hardware wouldn't be nearly as affordable. So it's that they have a greater cost because they're not making their profit from hardware, it's from licensing revenue, instead of only being a storefront and backend provider. But it's a bad argument because you can easily say that it's a distinction without a difference because 30% is 30%.

plucky pagoda
#

It doesn't seem relevant though. I don't see how the cost involved has an impact on the argument they've made.

north torrent
#

I just hope for my own selfish reasons that this in one way or another ends in Epic not bothering with Apple products in the future.

More focus on PC is always good for me.

rigid shoal
#

There's a lot of money in mobile games.

north torrent
#

Not my money.

#

So like I said, my own selfish reasons.

spare glade
#

This time around they may have simply tried to bite off more than they can chew. They certainly have expanded rather quickly into many different areas.

rigid shoal
#

You could put your game on iOS, perhaps.

north torrent
#

No.

plucky pagoda
#

I hope they don't end up walking away from IOS. I really need to be able to port to IOS. I'm locked in to UE for now but if a year from now we don't have IOS, I can't see how I wouldn't have to look at other options.

spare glade
#

Isnt Unity a better option for Mobile anyway?

rigid shoal
#

I doubt that Apple could just lock Epic out of the app store.
Epic is a pretty large company with a lot of developers relying on their software.

north torrent
#

I would celebrate if Unreal stopped supporting mobile... But that isn't going to happen.

plucky pagoda
#

Maybe if that's your only market but being able to make an IOS port of a PC game that could have crossplay between them is a huge boon.

spare glade
#

They maybe able to Lock out Epics own products, but i doubt they can Lock out 3rd parties that may simply be using the Engine.

north torrent
#

Companies like Disney use Unreal, and that's not a legal battle Apple wants to have....

rigid shoal
#

I think Unreal is better in all regards, and I'm not purposely being biased, though I've never used Unity.

plucky pagoda
#

I used Unity for years. I like Unreal better in a lot of ways.

spare glade
#

I havent used Unity for years but id argue its better for 2D if nothing else.

plucky pagoda
#

Yeah, absolutely. I tried to argue it wasn't but spending a week in it with 2D recently it's way ahead there.

rigid shoal
#

Okay, yeah 2D, but... besides that.

light spruce
#

The entire percentage focus doesn't really have a lot of relevance to their claims for monopoly

spare glade
#

Besides 2D, yeah Unreal all the way haha

plucky pagoda
#

There's no way I'd switch to something else right now. In a year if we lost IOS, maybe I'd look at GODOT or Unity. But it's hard to justify the time spent getting acquainted with a different engine.

rigid shoal
#

Godot should not be a consideration.

light spruce
#

It's pretty clear that all their focus was on the public opinion front and they totally ignored any of the legal aspects.

plucky pagoda
#

Why? My only hold back was console support and there's options for that now.

rigid shoal
#

Imo, it's just too small. Even the community. I guess it could work, but I'd be worried using it.

plucky pagoda
#

Unreal has a lot going for it with other areas though. I mean being able to apply your knowledge in it to film, Archviz, TV production ... It's a huge boon.

rigid shoal
#

Like, the only issue with Unreal and iOS is this spontaneous legal situation. It's somewhat minor. Even if Epic dialed back their iOS support, UE developers would still probably be able to ship for iOS.

light spruce
#

Yeah, pretty sure you wouldn't be doing any of those things with Godot

rigid shoal
#

Unreal and Unity are established with large communities and lots of support.

plucky pagoda
#

It's not that easy to just modify the engine to support iOS without access.

light spruce
#

Unless you were trying to bring back Transformers Beast Wars maybe

plucky pagoda
#

I just hope that when it's over we still have iOS support.

rigid shoal
#

I'm pretty confident that iOS support won't be jeopardized. Though, Epic may naturally be less eager to expand upon it.

light spruce
#

The way they've done things so far, would you be surprised if Epic just flipped the table over and said "Fine. We're not even going to bother with iOS at all anymore."?

plucky pagoda
#

Not one bit.

north torrent
#

I hope the world someday just flips the table and says, "Fine, we aren't going to bother with iOS anymore."

plucky pagoda
#

There's plenty of room for that energy to go into other areas.

rigid shoal
#

That decision would be incredibly selfish at the cost of Unreal users developing for iOS. I don't think Epic has that personality.

light spruce
#

Why not? They put people in the position they're in now

plucky pagoda
#

The only reason it's even on my radar at all is I'm working on something that might get a mobile port. If you'd asked me 3 months ago I couldn't have cared less if it lost iOS.

north torrent
#

Easy solution, just don't port to mobile.

rigid shoal
#

It's one thing to try and put the company in a better position, it's another thing to completely screw over part your userbase (of which, Epic has always promoted).

plucky pagoda
#

I would have said it would be a good thing for that dev work to be shifted toward realtime film or something.

north torrent
#

Port your game to a realtime film or something.

I don't understand how you can think the Chinese government isn't incredibly over-reaching in how they govern people.

I would take a Chinese hospital over a US hospital.

plucky pagoda

shifting the goal post.

You keep doing that. Trying to equate one thing as being something else.

#

Saying the US has issues that need to be addressed is not the same as praising another country.

north torrent

China has its problems, but the US is kind of just scary on the world stage.

A world where neither of the two had overwhelming power would be the preferable option.

rigid shoal
#

American wealth is pretty high, but most importantly, wealth opportunity in America is unparalleled.

plucky pagoda

rich quiver

plucky pagoda

I don't know if it's declined, I doubt that. But it's still by far the best.

fresh heath
#

@rigid shoal Wealth opportunity in the country where you have to take crazy student debt to be competitive?

plucky pagoda
#

simply not supported by fact

rigid shoal
#

Just look at the stock market.
And wealth inequality doesn't mean a lack of wealth opportunity.
And America has a lot of INCREDIBLY rich people.

fresh heath
#

Oh yes, the stock market

#

The ultimate benchmark

light spruce
#

Does this alternate reality also not have medical bankruptcies and cops that don't shoot black people for being black?

plucky pagoda
#

The stock market has nothing to do with the economic reality of 99% of the people living in the US.

rigid shoal
#

A lot of people have their retirements in the stock market. It's essentially the new pension.

rich quiver
#

no they dont

fresh heath
#

@rigid shoal America has people like Buffett and Gates, who create monopolistic moats around their businesses and kick down the ladder for future generations

plucky pagoda
#

401ks should be illegal. It is horrific that companies are allowed to invest the retirements of so many people into stocks.

rigid shoal
#

Yeah, why is it America that has all these tech super companies?
Americans have very easy access to capital investment.

plucky pagoda
#

which ones?

rich quiver
#

silicon valley

light spruce
#

Because they can pay people shit and evade taxes?

plucky pagoda
#

and how are they American?

fresh heath
#

@rigid shoal Because they ride on the momentum of the post-Sputnik Cold War investments

rigid shoal
#

Americans are paid higher than most, especially compared to Asians. Furthermore, these tech companies pay people pretty highly.

north torrent
#

I think when people talk about education in the United States they don't generally dig into the numbers to see the details of the comparison.

From my research and time as a teacher I have found that US students in most categories line up with the scores of countries in Europe and Asia. Kids from the higher tier of US public schools are generally competitive with the countries known for having very high level education systems.

What you will see when you dig into the numbers though is that the bottom tier of schools/students in the US is just incredibly, incredibly low. The US leaves a lot of kids behind and that incredibly horrible bottom tier brings the overall numbers down.

So it is certainly a broken system, but it isn't because it is bad across the board but because there is so much inequality between the good schools and the bad schools. There are also just so many individual students that get left behind.

But as a teacher in Shanghai I would certainly put my kid in a US public school before a Chinese public school.

rigid shoal
#

And 401k's are usually managed by the individual. Though, they may be limited to mutual funds.

fresh heath
#

@rigid shoal Americans also have the highest cost of living in the places where tech companies are concentrated, like California

rich quiver
#

i pay double then American on normal stuff

rigid shoal
#

Yes, but those companies still pay people highly, which is why those areas are have a high cost of living.

fresh heath
#

You can work for Activision Blizzard and barely get by from paycheck to paycheck

rigid shoal
#

And American education is actually the best in the world, but I don't care about that.

plucky pagoda
#

It's an issue with funding schools by property taxes. It creates inequality in education. In Ohio it was actually ruled unconstitutional by the state court and yet 25 years later we still do it that way.

spare glade
#

@north torrent Whats bad about Chinese Public Schools compared to the US?

rigid shoal
#

Activision Blizzard is not a tech super company.

north torrent
#

For anyone new here, Floss is famous for using 'But my 401k' as justification for just about anything.

light spruce
#

Why don't you skip to a logical endpoint and also argue that health insurance is a great idea?

rigid shoal
#

Most employers pay for their employee's health insurance.
The argument against universal healthcare is that it's expensive.

fresh heath
plucky pagoda
#

That's a horrible thing too.

rich quiver
#

US ranks as 27th in education that bad

rigid shoal
#

That's the average. The bottom public schools drag everything down.

plucky pagoda
#

Tying health insurance to employment is bad for both business owners and employees.

rigid shoal
#

But the top outranks everything else in the world.

plucky pagoda
#

show me where you derive that conclusion from

rigid shoal
#

Just think about all the Ivy league schools. There are FEW competitors to those in other countries.

#

And a lot of European countries have INCREDIBLY high taxes. It's ridiculous.

light spruce
#

I would rather be having a migraine right now.

plucky pagoda
#

I'm done. I like having a real discussion but a deluge of constantly shifting unsupported malarkey isn't worth debating.

north torrent
#

The problem I have with Chinese schools is that they are based on memorization and not on having the students do any thinking for themselves, Mr. Boatswain.

My particular private school has the mission to be the opposite of that, and that's why they hire people like me. But in the public schools kids who think outside the box and come up with different ways to solve problems are basically taught that they are wrong for being that way. The teacher gave you a very specific way to approach this problem and you will do it that way every time and not think about it. @spare glade

rich quiver
#

i pay 11.5% on tax on everything i am part of the US

rigid shoal
#

What state?
But anyway, American federal taxes are usually way lower than European taxes.

rich quiver
#

spare glade
#

And you believe the US schools manage this style of teaching better?

light spruce
#

That's pretty similar to US schools. Teaching memorization for standardized tests.

plucky pagoda
#

I pay about 2% with deductions from capital losses I carry over and biz deductions.

#

And tax credits, those make up a lot too.

north torrent
#

Floss is generally right on his assessment of US school with the exception that he is incredibly overplaying the greatness of the top schools, Mr. Slivinski.

No, the top schools in the US are not 'the greatest in the world' but they are certainly competitive and in the top tier.

rigid shoal
#

I'm just saying, MIT, Harvard, Yale, etc... are pretty unparalleled.
And especially consider connections and ... as much as I hate to say it, prestige.
Even Xi Jinping's daugher goes to Harvard.

fresh heath
#

ETH Zurich is better than any US school

bronze axle
#

ETH Zurich is better than any US school
@fresh heath Why?

north torrent
#

US schools aren't great by any means, Mr. Boatswain, but I don't think they go out of their way to beat the intuitive thought processes out of you. They don't generally push you to expand you skills in creative thinking, but they don't beat it out of you.

But everything to do with US schools is relative to the area.

China is very standardized across every school. They have strict nationwide curriculums. The US varies greatly even in the same city. So I am sure some US schools are much better and much worse about this particular topic.

fresh heath
#

That's the impression I'm getting from following the top school's CS research output

rigid shoal
#

The academic curriculum, or the value of academics in China and Korean (maybe Japan too) are dystopian as fuck.
Even if they ranked well, you wouldn't want your kids to be living that life.

#

I'm Chinese, but to be explicit, yes. My parents also tell me stories about that.

north torrent

Please, tell me more about China's education system. I would very much like to learn from you and everything you picked up in your single trip to Shenzhen.

rigid shoal

What about the importance of the Gaokao or Suneung? That 1 year college entrance test? You don't think that's incredibly dystopian?

north torrent
#

If I learn about the Chinese education system from Floss maybe I can get a promotion at work.

#

I'll take notes and share them with the Chinese teachers I work with as well, I am sure they would like to learn about schools in China.

rigid shoal
#

I was asking genuinely, Mao, what do you think about the importance of their college entrance test?

north torrent
#

But to be clear, my stance on this issue is that I would 100% send my kid to a US school over a Chinese school. I just think Floss is over exaggerating both the US and China in a false way.

rich quiver
#

yes

north torrent
#

I do not like them at all, Floss, I just think you are over exaggerating.

#

There is a reason I work at an international school that is based off an International Baccalaureate curriculum, whatever that big word means... (I honestly don't know...)

rigid shoal
#

I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I don't think I am over exaggerating.
And that's IB, it's pretty well known amongst American kids. Though, my school didn't have it, hilariously.

north torrent

Yes, I know how acronyms work.

rich quiver

so your school don't have international students

There's nothing wrong with making a claim; just be prepared to back it up with evidence, even that just means an anecdote.

rich quiver

don't waste our time in a false clams without evidence

plucky pagoda

It gets old when it's one claim after another that when it's challenged gets moved to something else. I'm just going to take a break for a bit.

north torrent
#

But my school is following the IB curriculum while still keeping to the Chinese standards for Math and Chinese class, as the government is very strict about those. We are actually currently under review by the IB board to get full accreditation from them which would open up great opportunities for our students if they want to apply for schools internationally later on. I actually have an interview with one of the top IB people based out of Australia on Wednesday as part of the accreditation process.

bronze axle
#

I will try to find sources. But most of what I said, imo, were well known claims that did not require sources.
@rigid shoal I would argue that every claim is subject to scrutiny. Without evidence, it's just that: a claim, and not to be taken seriously.

light spruce
#

The plural of anecdote is not data and the burden of proof lies on the claimant.

north torrent
#

I just find it funny when people who live in the United States lecture me on China. It doesn't bother me it all, it gives me a good laugh. The US has a lot of very negative propaganda ingrained in their brains about China.

#

I honestly think living in both countries is about equal. But on the world stage I would say the US is slightly more evil. But I would like a world where both had less power.

#

But that's just my opinion.

@north torrent Those people bum me out. I see that as a lost opportunity. I have some negative opinions about China - more specifically the CCP - but when speaking to people who live there, I'd rather learn everything I can about their perspective than lecture them about mine.

north torrent

I think that can be said of alot of Countries lol

There is basically one last generation of people running that country that still have the 'bitter' us against the world mentality. And if I grew up in the times they did I would probably be the same. But the newer generations that will be stepping into power in the coming decade are much more internationally minded and very friendly toward western culture.

Chinese people in general still really like the US even right now.

Then I asked them, "Do you know any people who always blame others when they make a mistake?" and my whole class yelled out "tRump!"

#

So I asked them, "Who does tRump blame when he makes a mistake?" and they unanimously said, "China!"

rich quiver
#

yup

spare glade

The problem is though, does that say more about the US or more about China? I cant imagine that the CCP isnt influencing its populations image of the US and Trump.

He maybe nice, he may have been smart at one point but you seriously cannot deny that he has degraded mental capacity...

Last time, the DNC fucked over Sanders. This time, he just got constantly shit on by rich people and mainstream media. And then a bunch of people stayed in the primary far too long.

Joe Biden has has a stutter since he was a child. It is not new and it is not age related.

But I do not support allowing people who are 70+ to run for president.

But if all the options are 70+ then you take the better of the 70+ year old people.

#

should i use blueprints and cpp? i wanna make a game set in a city, the map wouldn't be too big maybe the size of bully scholarship edition, would blueprints alone make my game run badly?

#

.

#

i heard some people say use cpp for the big functions and stuff and use blueprints for simple stuff but what is considered a big function and what's considered simple

fresh heath
#

C++ is easier when you aren't the only person working on the game

zinc matrix
#

im alone

fresh heath
#

You aren't planning to get more people on board ever?

zinc matrix
#

i might, but tbh i don't have many friends that are into gamedev and even the one that is, is kind of a flake, he's the type to quit and get lazy extremely quickly

fresh heath
#

C++ is much faster when you have a lot of logic that gets executed every tick or so

zinc matrix
#

give me an example

fresh heath
#

A lot of characters following their own routines in a city

zinc matrix
#

ok

fresh heath
#

If these routines aren't super simple, the CPU is going to choke with blueprints

zinc matrix
#

ok

#

would shooting or sprinting be considered a big deal? would i need to use cpp

fresh heath
#

Depends, if they are just sprinting directly towards each other then maybe you won't need it

#

If they are running to cover from time to time and throwing grenades, then this would be a bigger deal

#

It's hard to predict it like this

#

If you are really ambitious, then it won't hurt to make your project C++ friendly

zinc matrix
#

hmm ok, so do you think i should use cpp mostly for the npc's?

fresh heath
#

A Bully-sized game is pretty ambitious

#

@zinc matrix Yeah, you could do that

zinc matrix
#

i mean the map in bully is pretty small

fresh heath
#

You don't have to do everything in C++, it could be piecemeal

zinc matrix
#

for today's standard atleast

fresh heath
#

Some parts blueprints, some C++

#

It would be fine

#

They are made to be mixed

zinc matrix
#

yeah i heard that, tbh if everything had to be in cpp i would get too stressed

fresh heath
#

For a one-man developer a Bully-sized game is still ambitious

zinc matrix
#

yeah that is true

fresh heath
#

Rockstar's team that developed Bully was like tens of people at least

zinc matrix
#

that is true

#

i don't have trust issues, but when it comes to gamedev i do, i don't wanna just get anyone to work on my game and flake on me, and idk where i could find a gamedev group around my age

fresh heath
#

I totally get you

#

I'm also working alone

zinc matrix
#

that is true

fresh heath
#

Royalites just aren't strong enough motivator

#

Not like salaries

zinc matrix
#

yeah, tbh none of my games are gonna make money anyways so that sucks, not cause im not confident about my game selling, but cause it's really complicated to get that stuff figured out in my country

fresh heath
#

If I could hire an artist I totally would, but I'm broke myself

#

So I learn Blender and Substance Painter to do everything myself

#

It's hard but I'm making progress

teal kindle
#

just keep lettin the info wash over u and build the practice time :p

zinc matrix
#

yeah, tbh i also kinda wanna be cocky about it, idk why but i've always felt like i just want to be the only one in the credits and the only one in the spotlight, i guess im just a narcissist.

teal kindle
#

if you ever hire an artist, it'll be much nicer on both of you if you have just some of the insight

zinc matrix
#

that is true, but im broke and my game won't make any money so it would be a waste to spend lots of money on it, plus the 3d art is tbh one of the most fun parts of making a game so taking that out of it would make all of game dev boring, so if i wasn't broke getting someone to work on the cpp would be my best bet

@chilly igloo Governments have an equivalent of NDAs, in the UK it's called the official secrets act. If you work on anything with the government you have to sign it, usually several times over the course of your careers. If you breach that contract the consequences are far far more serious and often immediate than a civil NDA.

plucky pagoda
#

@chilly igloo They don't necessarily have to have a security clearance. They do an initial investigation and background check on people and give them the minimum level clearance necessary for the job which is often just an indication of a "favorable" outcome which more or less means it's more likely than not there's nothing wrong with their background. In the US a lot of those jobs are handled through civilian contractors. The HQ at the last base I worked at had a Starbucks in the building right across the hallway from the base commanders office the people working there likely had only a very basic background check done even though they were a few feet away from some high level stuff.

They're remaking both apparently, though I actually thought it was the second one that they were doing

fresh heath
#

I remember that they only made some patches to System Shock 2's recently "rediscovered" source code

rich quiver
light spruce
#

Why is rediscovered in scare quotes?

fresh heath
#

Because it was leaked anonymously by someone who shouldn't have had it or something, I don't remember the full story

#

It wasn't obtained directly from Looking Glass

light spruce
#

If the rights they have include the rights for the source, it's not really an issue so much as something weird.

#

There are a lot of old games where no one has the source anymore because ... why would they?

fresh heath
#

By the way, it would be really cool if Epic opensourced Unreal 1 and Unreal Tournament'99

light spruce
#

"Well, Jim ... we're out of business. Here's a box of drives with the version control database on it. Don't lose it and keep it for eternity"

Doom 3 BFG Edition is probably the last game id Software released under GPL sadly

#

Without Carmack there's no one to push them to do it

light spruce
#

I don't know that I would be super excited about it. I don't know that it'd have the craziness applied with it like Doom.

#

I definitely don't think that Unreal was nearly as influential

fresh heath
#

UT99 is still a blast to play

#

I was running my own UT99 server for me and my friends about five or six years ago, it was a lot of fun

light spruce
#

Yeah. It was fun. But there are plenty of fun games. I'm not sure what you'd really get out of the source for it at this point.

fresh heath
#

Port it to Raspberry Pi lol

#

Actually, to any Android device

#

Even the Switch maybe

#

And to new ARM64 Macs

light spruce
#

port it to I CAN'T STOP FUCKING SNEEZING

#

porting it to arm would probably not be fun

#

It did at least have a linux port, but who knows how rough that is at this point.

#

Ports to WebAssembly are also getting popular, I've recently seen one for Super Mario 64

#

It was made from the decompiled source

Re: System Shock, I still think the Unity build that had the blockier texture filtering is a cool look. I've dicked around with a post-process shader in UE4 to create a similar gritty effect. Results were mixed.

I think it was actually Super Mario Bros. that they just downloaded someone's rom somewhere to throw in their emulator.

@foggy path I've wanted to do a true gore system with UE4 for ages now but it's a fairly long winded process to setup right. I don't even like gory stuff anymore (thanks real internet gore videos) but it seems like we haven't had a full on realtime system for it yet.

foggy path
#

yeah I mean overly realistic gore is kind of meh

#

but I don't mind stuff that's kind of stupid and over the top

#

it was very interesting seeing the short bit on the stream which actually showed their tooling inside UE for it

they had a system that looked like it would allow you to assign different things into bones or something inside UE with custom editor UIs

I had a dream last night that there was a baby grizzly bear living in my house as a pet. But then it stopped wanting to go outside and look for its own food and didn't want to follow the rules of the house. So then I decided that there is no way this bear can stay in my house when it becomes bigger, and it is very unhealthy for it to get too reliant on my food. So I used food to trick it to get in the back of a pickup truck I rented for Enterprise and then I drove to the animal shelter and dropped the bear off so the experts could re-assimilate him to the wild.

It was an odd dream.

YouTube canceled my partnership by moving the goalposts before they had to pay me my 100 bucks

hidden drift

i declined enabling ads in 2007. in retrospect maybe that was a mistake.

I dunno, unless you get craploads of views it probably wouldn't have netted much :P

hidden drift

i have a theory that i can't prove that youtube doesn't promote videos they can't monetize.

#

why would they want more people to view my videos if I have ads disabled for all of them?

light spruce
#

I have a theory with anecdotal and logical support that YouTube is morally bankrupt

foggy path
#

this is from over 10 years of random videos that nobody watched lol

light spruce
#

I definitely wouldn't want to do YouTube full time.

hidden drift
#

anyway, i'm still excited about figuring out the puzzle on how to use ue4 to make a "fake" portal 3 game.

light spruce
#

A lot of people don't seem to realize that it is, in fact, a job

hidden drift

I would rather do ue4 work full time instead of my present job, but i know it won't pay as much, so i basically need to be ready to retire to do that.

light spruce

It's a lot of work, you never know when they're going to change the rules, you never know when you'll get content ID matched on something that ... actually isn't even the thing that's being claimed, totally irrespective of any kind of fair use laws

foggy path

Get job at google and live in a van for a 10 years and you'll have saved a lot of money!

light spruce

You would probably have to live in a van to work in that area

hidden drift

i've already been working in the bay area for 21 years.. i'm actually pretty close to ready to retire, but my wife isn't ready for me to retire.

i live in the same zip code as google.

@acoustic halo Animate is decent but it's more generalised than just logos

foggy path
#

The real pro move is to get a remote job in the bay area while living somewhere cheaper

#

Get the bay area salary but none of the living costs

hidden drift
#

when i first started working in the bay area, figuring the cost of housing, I realized that I would only need $60k/yr in texas for the same lifestyle as 200k/yr in the bay area... unfortunately my starting salary in 1999 was $100k.

foggy path
#

I did that for a 6 month contract and it was nice lol

acoustic halo
#

@fathom wadi as in Adobe Animate?

hidden drift

the pandemic lets me work from home now, so at this point, it's unclear that where i live even matters.

hidden drift

i've read that some companies are re-basing salaries based on the home address you claim.

foggy path

some of them probably do that yeah

acoustic halo

@fathom wadi do you happen to know if it has stuff like layer effects similar to photoshop? my use case requires two images and i need to have one negate the other during an animation

fathom wadi
#

yeah its called masking

hidden drift
#

i have strong bias against using adobe products... because of the subscription model.. i would probably use blender for what i imagine you guys are talking about.

acoustic halo
#

@hidden drift this is strictly for a 2d logo animation

north torrent
#

Use a VPN so that you look like you are working from San Francisco. Then work from home in Kansas. Save money, get rich, die of Covid, success.

hidden drift
#

you can use blender for 2d logo animations too

#

i did.

foggy path
#

The subscription model is fine if you're using the products professionally because you can claim it in taxes or w/e

#

but it's a pain for personal use for sure

north torrent
#

I'm not about to use Blender for 2d stuff...

#

Not going to happen.

fathom wadi
#

Animate is fairly complete in terms of code you can add to it and animation. It can also rig a 2d model if you want to go down that route. For something simple though, it excels

hidden drift
#

just use GIMP then?

acoustic halo
#

ohh the rigging feature sounds very nice

fathom wadi
#

Flash was always my thing. So Animate is a natural successor for me. But I dont use it myself. My kid does

light spruce
#

I never cared for GIMP. But I did move to Krita some time ago. The tool palette system still sucks.. and the text support is awful... but actually using it for stuff is pretty solid.

hidden drift
#

HTML5 got me off flash. I started doing animations directly in webpages without any plugins.

acoustic halo
#

alright so for an animation of a logo moving around, requiring some effects like negating two layers, glowing, blurring, chromatic abberation, etc, would Photoshop work? I'm already subbed to PS and I doubt the trial of Animate would let me export what I need

light spruce
#

I have a Krita window layout called "Mr. Dogshit" that sets up a single window across two displays... because while you can have floating tool palettes.. none of them dock to each other or scale if they aren't docked in the main window.

hidden drift
#

to be fair, it was actually chrome banning running flash that got me off flash

foggy path
#

Unless they've improved the photoshop animation tools I don't really know if it can do that

#

They've been very rudimentary at least in the past

acoustic halo
#

yeah and judging from videos, it doesnt look too promising

#

honestly just looks like it offers flipbooking

foggy path
#

Yeah, like basic keyframed animation

light spruce
#

I would do stop motion with paper cutouts first

acoustic halo
#

lmao

light spruce
#

At least that would have some style to it

acoustic halo
#

alright well ill try digging into Animate, thanks fellas

hidden drift
foggy path

that's neat

#

is it using some kind of particle fx system for the sparks?

light spruce
#

you know how to farm them clicks

hidden drift
#

yeah, it's a visualizer i made.. that i'm now re-making in unreal engine.

#

intended mostly for piano streamers on twitch/youtube/etc.

light spruce

So, my initial impression is "how did I accidentally open DOS edit?"

hidden drift
#

the particles are just boxes drawn on a canvas.

foggy path
#

nice :)

fathom wadi

@acoustic halo the trial is a full product. No restrictions except perhaps in some licensing deep in the crevasse of Adobe's legalese.

light spruce
#

V and F are both F4 KERNEL PANIC

hidden drift
#

the sparks are just math drawing a funky half circle with random points where the radius expands.

foggy path
#

last time I really did anything in canvas the performance of that was abysmally bad lol

#

but this was in like.. 2007

hidden drift
#

turns out this canvas thing runs at 240fps on my gaming laptop

#

so it's entertaining for sure.

fathom wadi
#

@hidden drift I quit Flash and web development around the time HTML5 took off and Bootstrap took over how people wanted their sites made. Made the jump to game dev and never looked back.

light spruce
#

I think it might be very telling that when I turned on the fire thing (because of course I would) that I thought it looked kinda like a dick

hidden drift
#

i did another example where i blew apart someone's jpg image into 80000 pixels in html+javascript and it animated at 240fps for me too

#

where the image basically "exploded" in a pattern

foggy path
#

you could do it with very high performance using shaders in webgl nowadays

fathom wadi
hidden drift
#

by profession i'm actually a C programmer writing things like BIOS for servers.

#

so html+javascript is far from my domain

foggy path

There was actually that sorta stuff done in Flash iirc

Flash rendering was decently quick

light spruce

Is this sound like a 30% PWM?

#

love the look of that fluid sim

fathom wadi
#

@foggy path not for the good stuff. When I hit the 3d domain, it was running awful with around 2000 polys. That being said, you could fake something similar I guess

My first shader was a dynamic spline I used to create winline indicators for a slot machine. Made me realise that if you can get the data in, the sky is the limit.

light spruce
#

if you want drugs.avi, I need to upload the footage of my nightmare shader that happened by accident

fathom wadi
#

that music is super chill

hidden drift
#

the original video had a flythrough, but OBS recording got all frame-droppy on me so i had to cut that part out.

#

next time i'm just going to record the output externally over hdmi

#

i am guessing the problem is the laptop is displaying at 240fps and recording at 24fps in OBS.. or that unreal engine somehow blocks the gpu video encoders

foggy path
#

if the game is maxing out your GPU it used to cause stutters in OBS due to render lag

#

recent OBS versions should no longer do that at least if your windows 10 is up to date and you run OBS as admin

#

they added GPU scheduling into Windows 10 and OBS supports it now

hidden drift
#

i don't run obs as admin. i guess that's my problem

#

but since i have an atem mini pro, i can just record with that next time.

fathom wadi
#

plugins could add streaming support fairly easily to UE4 I reckon. I mean the entire thing is slate so its render info is already there. Just need to get it out in a format via an interface. hmmm. tempted to go wrap the entire editor in a retainer box and see what happens 😄

light spruce
#

gpu scheduling has generally just shit up background performance as I've read

fathom wadi
#

Im not gonna do that.

#

im tired and its late 😄

light spruce
#

Does that mean that OBS actually can do something else with it?

hidden drift
#

actually now that i think about it, whenever i start a game, the nvidia experience asks me if i want to start some overlay.. i should use that to record.

foggy path
#

The problem with the render lag in OBS was that if the game uses 100% GPU, there's nothing left for OBS to do scene composition

fathom wadi
#

I wouldn't. That thing lags my editor really bad

#

In fact, turn it off and you might find OBS works fine

foggy path
#

My understanding of the GPU scheduling fix was that windows can now prioritize OBS over the game, so there's always resources on the GPU for the OBS rendering

hidden drift
#

i think for me the fix will be to just make the game rate-limit itself to 24fps.

#

i just need to figure out how to do that in unreal engine.

#

with my gaming laptop defaulting to 240fps, these things seem to want to run with full framerate except when running in the editor, which for some reason limits itself to 60fps

light spruce
#

What I read about was that that any kind of video stuff just ate shit and dropped frames if a game was running... so it just didn't care about background stuff at all

hidden drift
#

though yesterday i was seeing 120fps and i'm not sure why

fathom wadi
#

the editor runs at 120fps by default

hidden drift
#

(also after 3 weeks working in blueprint, i learned that I should have started all my projects in C++)

foggy path
#

I dunno, all my BP projects worked fine if I needed to add C++ stuff into them

fathom wadi
#

If you can code for sure. I setup my projects with base C++ classes for most everything because interfacing between BP/C++ used to be a pain, so I got in the habit. It's less painful these days, but still, it gives you a platform to place time critical calculations and optimisations. Better doing it sooner than later.

hidden drift
#

i made the mistake of making structures in BP and wanting to use them in C.

#

(because I'm a C programmer ... as i mentioned earlier)

fathom wadi
#

you can access it in C++ but it's accessed the long way around

hidden drift
#

turned out easier to just kill the BP and rewrite in C++

fathom wadi
#

kinda like checking the asset registry if it exists then getting the ref/pointer etc

#

yeah simpler to make them in C++

foggy path
#

Yeah I've had to move a few structs and enums to C++

hidden drift
#

then anything i want to do in BP can just extend C++ classes, and i'm golden.

foggy path
#

My philosophy is to not overthink how I make stuff... it's a fairly trivial task usually to move something over to C++, and when I'm building new systems BP's are faster to work with when I don't necessarily know how I want it to work

fathom wadi
#

I live in a cycle of necessary recycling due to blueprints. They are just too quick to prototype with. So I end up deciding which to re-write. Not the fastest workflow but sometimes you need to know if it works before you get serious on the code

foggy path
#

yeah

hidden drift
#

i guess i'm in a unique position in that I am porting code i originally wrote in C for linux in 1992 to run at the command line to use unreal engine 4 as its "compatibility layer" to be multiplatform and have nice visuals.

foggy path
#

I'm doing a lot of prototyping for new game systems and such and I just have to have an implementation of something before I can tell if it's going to work :P

fathom wadi
#

I converted C source code a couple of times and aside from some confusion with char types and how to convert, it was fairly straight forward.

hidden drift
#

most things would be, but this includes a software synthesizer.

#

or let me phrase it this way: i'm porting my midi player with soft synth to unreal engine

fathom wadi
#

a sine wave abuser 😄

north torrent
#

Unreal DAW.

hidden drift
#

it does know how to abuse sine waves, yes.

fathom wadi
#

I had a plan for a Markov Chain for game music creation using the added Audio Engine a couple of versions ago and never started it. It's been in the back of my mind for ages.

hidden drift
#

and yes, it might be an unreal daw at some point, for some definition of daw.

north torrent
#

If I could just plug my Kontakt stuff into an Unreal DAW I would be happy.

hidden drift
#

by the time i'm done you'll be able to plug some VSTs into unreal engine.

fathom wadi
#

I would be happy with Music XML and let the engine do the rest. Perhaps some UMG Sheet Music and Midi Notation editor

hidden drift
#

unfortunately since i'm still working my paying job full time, by the time I'm done, years will have passed.

north torrent
#

I will be dead by then.

fathom wadi
#

I think I could run up a Midi stave pretty quick in UMG. I mean all the tools are there.

hidden drift
#

SF2 support is a high priority for mine..

#

i don't think unreal will support that without the work i've already done.
