This post makes me feel old.
I'm sorry man, you're welcome to fill it out if you remember what your fav games were in that age range though.
hahaha.
"Judge Rogers questioned Epic on when, exactly Apple became a monopoly given that its App Store rules have remained unchanged since the App Store launched, which Epic had no solid answer for, responding only that it was a monopoly when Fortnite came to iOS in 2018. She also said that walled gardens have existed for four decades and that what Apple's doing isn't too different. "They created a platform," she said."https://www.macrumors.com/2020/09/28/epic-games-apple-dispute-possible-jury-trial/
I'm more than a little concerned about the uncertainty of UE support for IOS in the future.
"Epic Games continued to argue that Apple has an App Store monopoly and charges excessive fees, but the judge pointed out that the 30 percent rate that Apple collects is the "industry rate" collected by PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Google, and more. "It's all 30 percent and you just want to gloss over it," the judge said to Epic's lawyers.
In response, Epic claimed that consoles are "different" because the hardware is sold at a loss, but the judge was unconvinced. "There doesn't seem to be evidence supporting what you're saying," she said."
::The only thing I care about in all of this is whether we still have the ability to put something on IOS or not.
That point isn't wrong, but it's a poor argument to make.
I don't see the difference at all. I've thought from the start that if Epic were to win the argument they're making it would effectively be the end of consoles.
I don't know that that would be a bad thing though.
I highly doubt that, if Consoles were in such danger, we would hear about it....
If they can't enforce a closed environment I don't see what the incentive is to put so much into them.
Simply closing off competition isnt enough?
I don't follow.
The same argument that supports that anyone should be allowed to have their own app store on IOS would seem to apply to consoles too.
It's true that console hardware is subsidized by software sales, and without that percentage, that market would be a lot smaller because the hardware wouldn't be nearly as affordable. So it's that they have a greater cost because they're not making their profit from hardware, it's from licensing revenue, instead of only being a storefront and backend provider. But it's a bad argument because you can easily say that it's a distinction without a difference because 30% is 30%.
It doesn't seem relevant though. I don't see how the cost involved has an impact on the argument they've made.
I just hope for my own selfish reasons that this in one way or another ends in Epic not bothering with Apple products in the future.
More focus on PC is always good for me.
There's a lot of money in mobile games.
This time around they may have simply tried to bite off more than they can chew. They certainly have expanded rather quickly into many different areas.
You could put your game on iOS, perhaps.
No.
I hope they don't end up walking away from IOS. I really need to be able to port to IOS. I'm locked in to UE for now but if a year from now we don't have IOS, I can't see how I wouldn't have to look at other options.
Isnt Unity a better option for Mobile anyway?
I doubt that Apple could just lock Epic out of the app store.
Epic is a pretty large company with a lot of developers relying on their software.
I would celebrate if Unreal stopped supporting mobile... But that isn't going to happen.
Maybe if that's your only market but being able to make an IOS port of a PC game that could have crossplay between them is a huge boon.
They maybe able to Lock out Epics own products, but i doubt they can Lock out 3rd parties that may simply be using the Engine.
Companies like Disney use Unreal, and that's not a legal battle Apple wants to have....
I think Unreal is better in all regards, and I'm not purposely being biased, though I've never used Unity.
I used Unity for years. I like Unreal better in a lot of ways.
I havent used Unity for years but id argue its better for 2D if nothing else.
Yeah, absolutely. I tried to argue it wasn't but spending a week in it with 2D recently it's way ahead there.
Okay, yeah 2D, but... besides that.
The entire percentage focus doesn't really have a lot of relevance to their claims for monopoly
Besides 2D, yeah Unreal all the way haha
There's no way I'd switch to something else right now. In a year if we lost IOS, maybe I'd look at GODOT or Unity. But it's hard to justify the time spent getting acquainted with a different engine.
Godot should not be a consideration.
It's pretty clear that all their focus was on the public opinion front and they totally ignored any of the legal aspects.
Why? My only hold back was console support and there's options for that now.
Imo, it's just too small. Even the community. I guess it could work, but I'd be worried using it.
Unreal has a lot going for it with other areas though. I mean being able to apply your knowledge in it to film, Archviz, TV production ... It's a huge boon.
Like, the only issue with Unreal and iOS is this spontaneous legal situation. It's somewhat minor. Even if Epic dialed back their iOS support, UE developers would still probably be able to ship for iOS.
Yeah, pretty sure you wouldn't be doing any of those things with Godot
Unreal and Unity are established with large communities and lots of support.
It's not that easy to just modify the engine to support iOS without access.
Unless you were trying to bring back Transformers Beast Wars maybe
I just hope that when it's over we still have iOS support.
I'm pretty confident that iOS support won't be jeopardized. Though, Epic may naturally be less eager to expand upon it.
The way they've done things so far, would you be surprised if Epic just flipped the table over and said "Fine. We're not even going to bother with iOS at all anymore."?
Not one bit.
I hope the world someday just flips the table and says, "Fine, we aren't going to bother with iOS anymore."
There's plenty of room for that energy to go into other areas.
That decision would be incredibly selfish at the cost of Unreal users developing for iOS. I don't think Epic has that personality.
Why not? They put people in the position they're in now
The only reason it's even on my radar at all is I'm working on something that might get a mobile port. If you'd asked me 3 months ago I couldn't have cared less if it lost iOS.
Easy solution, just don't port to mobile.
It's one thing to try and put the company in a better position, it's another thing to completely screw over part your userbase (of which, Epic has always promoted).
I would have said it would be a good thing for that dev work to be shifted toward realtime film or something.
Port your game to a realtime film or something.
would love to,
I'm really interested in exploring making animated stories with UE.
nothing but visual novels
More like cartoons
interactive film
Seems more beneficial to the world than mobile ports of games.
Nah, Android is a meme.
iOS users spend money
Blood money.
Android is pretty rough. Massive hardware and software fragmentation.
and yeah, iOS is where you get users that buy things
Yes.
Huawei phones are the best option in 2020.
The largest markets.
No adjectives needed.
Well, I guess largest is an adjective...
My point was that Asia simply has the most people.
Asians like iPhones too.
So they have the largest everything market.
How many people in Asia actually have money?
Cars, clothes, boomerangs, breakfast cereal, computers...
Asians spend a lot of money on video games.
Also, I think China's middle class population is greater than the entire population of America.
Probably all of them that are not children.
No, there's a lot of "poverty" in Asia.
so azure have issues right now
That's exactly what I meant though
You asked how many people had money... which is pretty much all of them.
You are taking things a bit too literally
I also take money away from my students when they think it is a toy...
That would be the worst possible outcome. If Huawei dethrones Apple.
We live in the worst possible outcome. Just walk outside.
If China dethrones American tech companies, the world will be ruined.
Wait... don't walk outside, you might catch the Corona.
That would be awful. Competition between America and China would not be good for America (and the rest of the West).
Huawei has some interesting stuff being investigated at their Munich research center, I wouldn't mind working there
The US is in no position to compete with China on just about anything.
The US is basically withering away.
We spent the last 30 years allowing almost all of our domestic manufacturing to be moved overseas.
Why would you want to live in a world where China is super powerful?
I like living and already do.
Any scenario is better than the current one we live in.
There's really not much wrong with the current situation. In fact, it's pretty great.
I'm not saying I'm a fan of it but reality is what it is.
Pretty great for me personally, but not for most people.
I would prefer the world where neither China nor the US are super powerful
@rigid shoal we already living in it
i would buy a chinese gpu 🙂
@carmine frigate Wait until they take back Taiwan and get TSMC
"take back"
Corporation Stock Buybacks have drained the US of all life.
@fresh heath and then thailand
I don't understand how people can complain about Trump and yet glorify China.
The United States is a shell of what it used to be, withering away while the rats fight over how much they can take for themselves.
Acknowledging reality is not the same as glorifying something.
Then you need glasses.
China is 1000 times the dystopia that you think Trump's America could possibly be.
The US was sold out by Wall Street who got enough power to "optimize" away the US companies' manufacturing capabilities
America is still the GREATEST. With essentially no close seconds.
It is fun to listen to indocrtinated Americans talk about how evil China is.
@rigid shoal It sure has greatest healthcare bills
number 1 in crime in the world
I don't think that's supported by reality. We're behind by almost every meaningful metric. Education, healthcare, economic equality,
Job security,
vacation time
housing
I don't understand how you can think the Chinese government isn't incredibly over-reaching in how they govern people.
Even the Chinese elites have a lot of power.
I would take a US public school over a Chinese public school.
I would take a Chinese hospital over a US hospital.
shifting the goal post.
You keep doing that. Trying to equate one thing as being something else.
Saying the US has issues that need to be addressed is not the same as praising another country.
China has its problems, but the US is kind of just scary on the world stage.
A world where neither of the two had overwhelming power would be the preferable option.
American wealth is pretty high, but most importantly, wealth opportunity in America is unparalleled.
No it's not.
people forgot that US bases around the world are funded by the Chinese after the ww's
In fact it's declined a lot in the last 30 years.
I don't know if it's declined, I doubt that. But it's still by far the best.
@rigid shoal Wealth opportunity in the country where you have to take crazy student debt to be competitive?
simply not supported by fact
Just look at the stock market.
And wealth inequality doesn't mean a lack of wealth opportunity.
And America has a lot of INCREDIBLY rich people.
Does this alternate reality also not have medical bankruptcies and cops that don't shoot black people for being black?
The stock market has nothing to do with the economic reality of 99% of the people living in the US.
A lot of people have their retirements in the stock market. It's essentially the new pension.
no they dont
@rigid shoal America has people like Buffett and Gates, who create monopolistic moats around their businesses and kick down the ladder for future generations
401ks should be illegal. It is horrific that companies are allowed to invest the retirements of so many people into stocks.
Yeah, why is it America that has all these tech super companies?
Americans have very easy access to capital investment.
which ones?
silicon valley
Because they can pay people shit and evade taxes?
and how are they American?
@rigid shoal Because they ride on the momentum of the post-Sputnik Cold War investments
Americans are paid higher than most, especially compared to Asians. Furthermore, these tech companies pay people pretty highly.
I think when people talk about education in the United States they don't generally dig into the numbers to see the details of the comparison.
From my research and time as a teacher I have found that US students in most categories line up with the scores of countries in Europe and Asia. Kids from the higher tier of US public schools are generally competitive with the countries known for having very high level education systems.
What you will see when you dig into the numbers though is that the bottom tier of schools/students in the US is just incredibly, incredibly low. The US leaves a lot of kids behind and that incredibly horrible bottom tier brings the overall numbers down.
So it is certainly a broken system, but it isn't because it is bad across the board but because there is so much inequality between the good schools and the bad schools. There are also just so many individual students that get left behind.
But as a teacher in Shanghai I would certainly put my kid in a US public school before a Chinese public school.
And 401k's are usually managed by the individual. Though, they may be limited to mutual funds.
@rigid shoal Americans also have the highest cost of living in the places where tech companies are concentrated, like California
i pay double then American on normal stuff
Yes, but those companies still pay people highly, which is why those areas are have a high cost of living.
You can work for Activision Blizzard and barely get by from paycheck to paycheck
And American education is actually the best in the world, but I don't care about that.
It's an issue with funding schools by property taxes. It creates inequality in education. In Ohio it was actually ruled unconstitutional by the state court and yet 25 years later we still do it that way.
@north torrent Whats bad about Chinese Public Schools compared to the US?
Activision Blizzard is not a tech super company.
For anyone new here, Floss is famous for using 'But my 401k' as justification for just about anything.
Why don't you skip to a logical endpoint and also argue that health insurance is a great idea?
Most employers pay for their employee's health insurance.
The argument against universal healthcare is that it's expensive.
The best education: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ve23i5K334
Uhh? Best technological university in the world?
That's a horrible thing too.
US ranks as 27th in education that bad
That's the average. The bottom public schools drag everything down.
Tying health insurance to employment is bad for both business owners and employees.
But the top outranks everything else in the world.
show me where you derive that conclusion from
Just think about all the Ivy league schools. There are FEW competitors to those in other countries.
And a lot of European countries have INCREDIBLY high taxes. It's ridiculous.
I would rather be having a migraine right now.
I'm done. I like having a real discussion but a deluge of constantly shifting unsupported malarkey isn't worth debating.
The problem I have with Chinese schools is that they are based on memorization and not on having the students do any thinking for themselves, Mr. Boatswain.
My particular private school has the mission to be the opposite of that, and that's why they hire people like me. But in the public schools kids who think outside the box and come up with different ways to solve problems are basically taught that they are wrong for being that way. The teacher gave you a very specific way to approach this problem and you will do it that way every time and not think about it. @spare glade
i pay 11.5% on tax on everything i am part of the US
What state?
But anyway, American federal taxes are usually way lower than European taxes.
is a US territory
And you believe the US schools manage this style of teaching better?
That's pretty similar to US schools. Teaching memorization for standardized tests.
I pay about 2% with deductions from capital losses I carry over and biz deductions.
And tax credits, those make up a lot too.
Floss is generally right on his assessment of US school with the exception that he is incredibly overplaying the greatness of the top schools, Mr. Slivinski.
No, the top schools in the US are not 'the greatest in the world' but they are certainly competitive and in the top tier.
I'm just saying, MIT, Harvard, Yale, etc... are pretty unparalleled.
And especially consider connections and ... as much as I hate to say it, prestige.
Even Xi Jinping's daugher goes to Harvard.
ETH Zurich is better than any US school
ETH Zurich is better than any US school
@fresh heath Why?
US schools aren't great by any means, Mr. Boatswain, but I don't think they go out of their way to beat the intuitive thought processes out of you. They don't generally push you to expand you skills in creative thinking, but they don't beat it out of you.
But everything to do with US schools is relative to the area.
China is very standardized across every school. They have strict nationwide curriculums. The US varies greatly even in the same city. So I am sure some US schools are much better and much worse about this particular topic.
That's the impression I'm getting from following the top school's CS research output
The academic curriculum, or the value of academics in China and Korean (maybe Japan too) are dystopian as fuck.
Even if they ranked well, you wouldn't want your kids to be living that life.
I'm Chinese, but to be explicit, yes. My parents also tell me stories about that.
Please, tell me more about China's education system. I would very much like to learn from you and everything you picked up in your single trip to Shenzhen.
Consigned to the memory hole.
USA own a island that government owns everything for 100 years and he blames china for doing the same
What about the importance of the Gaokao or Suneung? That 1 year college entrance test? You don't think that's incredibly dystopian?
If I learn about the Chinese education system from Floss maybe I can get a promotion at work.
I'll take notes and share them with the Chinese teachers I work with as well, I am sure they would like to learn about schools in China.
I was asking genuinely, Mao, what do you think about the importance of their college entrance test?
But to be clear, my stance on this issue is that I would 100% send my kid to a US school over a Chinese school. I just think Floss is over exaggerating both the US and China in a false way.
yes
I do not like them at all, Floss, I just think you are over exaggerating.
There is a reason I work at an international school that is based off an International Baccalaureate curriculum, whatever that big word means... (I honestly don't know...)
I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I don't think I am over exaggerating.
And that's IB, it's pretty well known amongst American kids. Though, my school didn't have it, hilariously.
Yes, I know how acronyms work.
so your school don't have international students
I just meant that it's popular.
My school was like 50% Asians from Asia. Not 50%, but like... 25%-ish.
finds this highly amusing
🤔
My students are all Chinese citizens. Two out of my 17 students have a parent that is a foreigner.
If you want to have a discussion, anytime you find yourself typing "I think" replace it with something that supports what you're saying. Otherwise it's just an endless self affirming waste of time.
There's nothing wrong with making a claim; just be prepared to back it up with evidence, even that just means an anecdote.
don't waste our time in a false clams without evidence
I will try to find sources. But most of what I said, imo, were well known claims that did not require sources.
🤣
It gets old when it's one claim after another that when it's challenged gets moved to something else. I'm just going to take a break for a bit.
But my school is following the IB curriculum while still keeping to the Chinese standards for Math and Chinese class, as the government is very strict about those. We are actually currently under review by the IB board to get full accreditation from them which would open up great opportunities for our students if they want to apply for schools internationally later on. I actually have an interview with one of the top IB people based out of Australia on Wednesday as part of the accreditation process.
I will try to find sources. But most of what I said, imo, were well known claims that did not require sources.
@rigid shoal I would argue that every claim is subject to scrutiny. Without evidence, it's just that: a claim, and not to be taken seriously.
The plural of anecdote is not data and the burden of proof lies on the claimant.
I just find it funny when people who live in the United States lecture me on China. It doesn't bother me it all, it gives me a good laugh. The US has a lot of very negative propaganda ingrained in their brains about China.
I honestly think living in both countries is about equal. But on the world stage I would say the US is slightly more evil. But I would like a world where both had less power.
But that's just my opinion.
china buy alot of US debt
and Force a US territory (Puerto Rico) to add mandarin language as a third language
I just find it funny when people who live in the United States lecture me on China.
@north torrent Those people bum me out. I see that as a lost opportunity. I have some negative opinions about China - more specifically the CCP - but when speaking to people who live there, I'd rather learn everything I can about their perspective than lecture them about mine.
The way China interacts with the rest of the world is going to change drastically once their 'Boomer' generation is out of power.
I think that can be said of alot of Countries lol
the UK
Australia as well haha
There is basically one last generation of people running that country that still have the 'bitter' us against the world mentality. And if I grew up in the times they did I would probably be the same. But the newer generations that will be stepping into power in the coming decade are much more internationally minded and very friendly toward western culture.
Chinese people in general still really like the US even right now.
the european union will be destroy or drastic change will happen
since brexit will have snowball effect
Though the other day when I was teaching good and bad personality traits one of my topics was 'Responsibility'.
I asked my students, "Is it good or bad to blame other people when you make mistakes?" and they said, "Bad".
Then I asked them, "Do you know any people who always blame others when they make a mistake?" and my whole class yelled out "tRump!"
So I asked them, "Who does tRump blame when he makes a mistake?" and they unanimously said, "China!"
yup
The problem is though, does that say more about the US or more about China? I cant imagine that the CCP isnt influencing its populations image of the US and Trump.
Now that's just a lie. The one thing he doesn't discriminate about is that he'll blame absolutely anyone and anything for something.
I am just sharing the mindset I observed from the Chinese children.
They don't have an animosity toward the US or tRump, but they have opinions on the way he acts. He is sort of just a joke to them.
The only point that i get from this, is that every political platform is going to do 2 things, improve its own image and degrade the image of its enemies....
LEDs are responsible for making him look orange.
yes
Though, I guess taking that to its logical conclusion, they were probably manufactured in China. So... I guess they're right.
You can buy MAGA hats in China. They are all made over here.
Can't buy Joe Biden hats though. Or Boe Jiden hats.
And because it isn't a meme in China, there is no reason for them to copy the design.
Joe Biden isn't interesting enough for anyone in China to know who he is.
Im Australian, so my opinion is irrelevant in the US election, but to me Joe Biden does not seem appropriate for President.
Donald T Rump is basically Peppa Pig level meme to the Chinese children.
he already did 30 years in the government @spare glade
Joe Biden is a very smart man and a very nice man. He also knows how to listen to the experts around him and follow their advice.
he have been in the government for shit ton of years
He maybe nice, he may have been smart at one point but you seriously cannot deny that he has degraded mental capacity...
Last time, the DNC fucked over Sanders. This time, he just got constantly shit on by rich people and mainstream media. And then a bunch of people stayed in the primary far too long.
I would be friends with Joe Biden if he lived in my neighborhood. I would go get a beer with him and watch a basketball game.
i have to vote for 4 different parties plus PR house and Resident commissioner
so not the US system make sense to have 2
Joe Biden has has a stutter since he was a child. It is not new and it is not age related.
But I do not support allowing people who are 70+ to run for president.
But if all the options are 70+ then you take the better of the 70+ year old people.
Ive seen old footage of him talking at length under pressure with not a single misspoken word. Your lying to yourself if you think he isnt in serious mental decline.
and a plebiscite
Kamala Harris is also a very intelligent and capable vice president if his age does become an issue.
Then why is she not the presidential nominee?
If you watch tRump speak in the matter of a minute he mispronounced Station, Mars, and his own name.... He is certainly in a much, much further state of mental decline.
Really... 🙄
Kamala Harris lost to Joe Biden during the primary race.
trump son is a drug addict
I did not vote for Joe Biden during the primary race.
But I still think he is a good man.
Trump's teleprompter reads "Marine Core" so he (hopefully) doesn't call them the Marine Corpse.
Pretty sure most people have really just fought "communism"
Communism didn't actually happen; it was some autocrat...oligarch... horseshit that was labeled as communism to rally people
How close depends a lot on what definition you want to use for socialism
In US politics the people on the right call anyone left of themselves communist, even other Republicans they are up against in a primary.
The exact same thing can be said of the Left though....
Yeah, but I was talking using an actual definition versus what is effectively "name calling"
It is funny though that every time I go back home to the states everyone wants to lecture me about how bad China is.
I wonder if I can play Jet Set Radio with these
Looks dangerous.
Let me know when there's a wheelchair variant
America first ... in a race to the bottom
First in Covid 19.
I don't think it actually is per-capita. But I will look.
It's actually number 11 for deaths per 100k. 10 if you exclude San Marino, which I would since only like 32,000 people live there.
Poor epic losing :(
Its cus arrogant
Big... Ego...
should i use blueprints and cpp? i wanna make a game set in a city, the map wouldn't be too big maybe the size of bully scholarship edition, would blueprints alone make my game run badly?
.
i heard some people say use cpp for the big functions and stuff and use blueprints for simple stuff but what is considered a big function and what's considered simple
C++ is easier when you aren't the only person working on the game
im alone
You aren't planning to get more people on board ever?
i might, but tbh i don't have many friends that are into gamedev and even the one that is, is kind of a flake, he's the type to quit and get lazy extremely quickly
C++ is much faster when you have a lot of logic that gets executed every tick or so
give me an example
A lot of characters following their own routines in a city
ok
If these routines aren't super simple, the CPU is going to choke with blueprints
Depends, if they are just sprinting directly towards each other then maybe you won't need it
If they are running to cover from time to time and throwing grenades, then this would be a bigger deal
It's hard to predict it like this
If you are really ambitious, then it won't hurt to make your project C++ friendly
hmm ok, so do you think i should use cpp mostly for the npc's?
i mean the map in bully is pretty small
You don't have to do everything in C++, it could be piecemeal
for today's standard atleast
yeah i heard that, tbh if everything had to be in cpp i would get too stressed
For a one-man developer a Bully-sized game is still ambitious
yeah that is true
Rockstar's team that developed Bully was like tens of people at least
that is true
i don't have trust issues, but when it comes to gamedev i do, i don't wanna just get anyone to work on my game and flake on me, and idk where i could find a gamedev group around my age
I totally get you
I'm also working alone
Tried to work with others, but unless you pay, people tend to lose interest too quickly
that is true
yeah, tbh none of my games are gonna make money anyways so that sucks, not cause im not confident about my game selling, but cause it's really complicated to get that stuff figured out in my country
If I could hire an artist I totally would, but I'm broke myself
So I learn Blender and Substance Painter to do everything myself
It's hard but I'm making progress
just keep lettin the info wash over u and build the practice time :p
yeah, tbh i also kinda wanna be cocky about it, idk why but i've always felt like i just want to be the only one in the credits and the only one in the spotlight, i guess im just a narcissist.
if you ever hire an artist, it'll be much nicer on both of you if you have just some of the insight
that is true, but im broke and my game won't make any money so it would be a waste to spend lots of money on it, plus the 3d art is tbh one of the most fun parts of making a game so taking that out of it would make all of game dev boring, so if i wasn't broke getting someone to work on the cpp would be my best bet
In computer science, pseudocode is a plain language description of the steps in an algorithm or another system. Pseudocode often uses structural conventions of a normal programming language, but is intended for human reading rather than machine reading. It typically omits deta...
just gonna leave that here....
Banana
So no transparency?
:C
I could probably 3d model a banana smoothie in Blender.
Good morning, Where would be the best place to pay someone for some technicial advise? I am trying to implement something into my game and struggling to work it out.
I guess at least on this discord you'd post it on #looking-for-talent
@foggy path Thank you, unfortunatly I do not have permission to post in that room.
Check the pinned messages in that channel, it should tell you how to post :)
@foggy path Perfect thanks.
the Asus cards for RTX 3090 and 3080 use only MLCC transistors so give more overroom even tehre is old pics and videos what have things before they changed the thing
.. what?
seems they found the issue and changed things on the fly
what cause the crashes what you hear
if asus did this so now how others react to that fallout
All retail ROG Strix and TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 graphics cards use only MLCC capacitors for decoupling close to the GPU. During development, we discovered the improvement this makes to...
I still didn't got it. Asus made it right, or bad? Who is right and who is bad?
well asus made to that road more
@cursive crypt its all about the Hz point when the card comes more sensitive
well the poshcaps only seems caused issue as it lowed the limit below where the temp and core checks are there to get boost
I see, but who has good cards and who does not now? @soft night
@zinc matrix Stick with BP until it does actually become a bottleneck. I've been able to get about 100 characters roaming around and chasing my player before I dropped below 60 FPS. 0 optimizations done on my end. I did it in the most straightforward way.
(Unless of course you want to use C++)
there is videos explain more as there is those teardowns from cards to look
oof just upgraded my internets from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps
now I'm wondering if I actually have cat5e cable or just cat5
:D
Yeah I could get 1gbps from DNA here, but it comes with some kind of custom router from them and I'm like.. yeah I don't know
I care about stability more than the speed tbh, and my current connection (100mbit) has been very stable these days... and switching operators you never really know :P
my download speeds are now actually CPU limited
lol
I have dreamed of this moment since I was 15 years old
time to get that Monster LAN card
only getting around 20-30 MB/s from Epic's launcher
though probably being I/O limited here
make sure you disable windows defender if its running when downloading from the launcher, it really screws with disk speeds
good point
Don't forget to use directional ethernet cables. It will also improve your digital audio quality.
I have gold plated USB-C cables, will that be enough?
@fluid bloom nwo youre 16.
sadly I'm 31 D:

Last year, the bosses of CD Projekt Red approached me for an interview. They wanted to announce that for Cyberpunk 2077, they would be avoiding mandatory crunch.
This week, they sent out an email to staff announcing studio-wide mandatory crunch. News: https://t.co/s4OI5rUiQq...

Nice Zak Parrish reference.
speaking of Zak I found this in a flea market bookstore this weekend. Can't wait to find him and get it signed
Wow, nice find!
Anyone have a cloud sync suggestion like dropbox or onedrive that allows me to sync different folders on diff hard drives?
What are everyone's favorite web browsers for windows?
Brave
I run Brave on four different accounts, but still run Vivaldi on one.
I had some trust issues with brave because of the way he was trying to monetize it.
Opera, been using it for years now
@light spruce Ah, nice. I thought Vivaldi looked a lot like Opera, which I use to love, and I see now one of the founders from Opera is in charge of it.
and bitwarden has an extension for it
anyone know of a good 3D scanning application on android?
Guys. Let's imagine some absolutely top-national-secret laboratory, military objects. I guess what in some cases they all 100% similar to regular office who sales air conditioners. This cases are: eating, so there should be some kitchen, and cleaning, so there should be some janitors. So... all those cook and janitors in top-secret objects - who are those people?! I guess for military objects its can be soldiers themselves, but what about laboratory making some air-space stuff?
I've heard that they are recruited through top secret discord servers these days.
@chilly igloo ever heard of NDA?
@chilly igloo ever heard of NDA?
@sage tendon i did, but did that works for secret national security level objects?
No, look what this guy Steven, Stunt, forgot his name, who ran in Russia did.
Romeo? 🤔
... whatever.
lul
national security stuff is kept in area 51 in america
and laboratorians cant leave or they get shot with alien laser
so the secrets never get out
@abstract haven displayland is an app for 3d scanning
nm i think they going bankrupt
you can just take lots of photos of an object and put it in meshroom but you'd need to also have a pc or laptop with you
@chilly igloo Governments have an equivalent of NDAs, in the UK it's called the official secrets act. If you work on anything with the government you have to sign it, usually several times over the course of your careers. If you breach that contract the consequences are far far more serious and often immediate than a civil NDA.
@chilly igloo They don't necessarily have to have a security clearance. They do an initial investigation and background check on people and give them the minimum level clearance necessary for the job which is often just an indication of a "favorable" outcome which more or less means it's more likely than not there's nothing wrong with their background. In the US a lot of those jobs are handled through civilian contractors. The HQ at the last base I worked at had a Starbucks in the building right across the hallway from the base commanders office the people working there likely had only a very basic background check done even though they were a few feet away from some high level stuff.
If you really want to know what it involves for most people all they ever fill out is a SF-86 which you can find online.
Mike accidentally watched the episode "Marge in Chains" and noticed a few other things besides Coronavirus and Murder Hornets... He tells Jay all about it. Jay doesn't care.
There's a similar issue with world comp that creeps up every now and then. You can watch the RAM start creeping up and up, and if you don't kill it it will eventually lock everything up.
Says it's targeted to be fixed in the upcoming release, though I'm a little surprised it's not marked as resolved if that's really the case.
it does look a little suspect
ugh, now I have to check the one I submitted
ugh.... it was marked resolved for 4.26 and now says backlogged
nah, 500 here to
I thought the one I submitted which was for Paper2D is related to another bug with Niagara and that being that it affected Niagara it might get fixed but looks like neither is going to be. Doesn't really have an impact on my work right now though.
Yo, and yesterday I encountered a bug with udims. 100% crashing the editor. Just need two tiles with a bit different name (same suffix).
btw, I can open that link.
Can't vote for you tho.
Yeah, too fast to joy. There is a bug in the bug report page.
Too complex world.
... Also I doubt it will be fixed for 4.26 lol, seems as an way to just postpone.
As that rich duck said once: no loans today, come tomorrow. Problem this was on printed label in front.
All the ones I'm worried about are pretty minor and more of an annoyance than anything else.
That's a weirdly specific memory leak.

Ohh yeah it was "The Big Bus"
I know these actors always from Star Trek and it's always kinda funny seeing them in something else
some of them often play kind of similar roles, like the dude who plays Quark often plays a sort of snarky mean characters
That's called typecasting.
Yeah, they do fit those roles well quite often so it makes sense

But are they actually going to ever build that System Shock 2 reboot?
They were remaking System Shock 1, not 2
Haven't heard about it in a while
I think they stream its development on Twitch regularly
On this channel https://www.twitch.tv/nightdivestudios
Nightdive Studios is an independent developer and publisher of classic videogames. Established in 2012, the company now publishes 100 titles across multiple digital platforms.
They're remaking both apparently, though I actually thought it was the second one that they were doing
I remember that they only made some patches to System Shock 2's recently "rediscovered" source code
Why is rediscovered in scare quotes?
Because it was leaked anonymously by someone who shouldn't have had it or something, I don't remember the full story
It wasn't obtained directly from Looking Glass
If the rights they have include the rights for the source, it's not really an issue so much as something weird.
There are a lot of old games where no one has the source anymore because ... why would they?
By the way, it would be really cool if Epic opensourced Unreal 1 and Unreal Tournament'99
"Well, Jim ... we're out of business. Here's a box of drives with the version control database on it. Don't lose it and keep it for eternity"
Doom 3 BFG Edition is probably the last game id Software released under GPL sadly
Without Carmack there's no one to push them to do it
I don't know that I would be super excited about it. I don't know that it'd have the craziness applied with it like Doom.
I definitely don't think that Unreal was nearly as influential
UT99 is still a blast to play
I was running my own UT99 server for me and my friends about five or six years ago, it was a lot of fun
Yeah. It was fun. But there are plenty of fun games. I'm not sure what you'd really get out of the source for it at this point.
Port it to Raspberry Pi lol
Actually, to any Android device
Even the Switch maybe
And to new ARM64 Macs
port it to I CAN'T STOP FUCKING SNEEZING
porting it to arm would probably not be fun
It did at least have a linux port, but who knows how rough that is at this point.
Ports to WebAssembly are also getting popular, I've recently seen one for Super Mario 64
It was made from the decompiled source
Nintendo had to get a copy of an old game of theirs from PirateBay.... Oh the ironies 😄
Re: System Shock, I still think the Unity build that had the blockier texture filtering is a cool look. I've dicked around with a post-process shader in UE4 to create a similar gritty effect. Results were mixed.
I think it was actually Super Mario Bros. that they just downloaded someone's rom somewhere to throw in their emulator.
the current version of it is looking pretty good too
Probably, now that you say that I know it was a ROM. They probably downloaded it, then hit them with a DMCA/C&D
was watching Realms Deep and they showed some stuff in UE, custom dismemberment system
I was like okay I'd like to have this in my game thx
:D
Yeah, it was Super Mario Bros. for the Wii virtual console
they shoulda called it Wiirtual Console
Nuclear wessels?
The super bright-ass colors in this remake remind me a bit too much of when mappers suddenly had colored lighting and everything looked like you were tripping balls in a discotheque
I kinda like it, it's sort of a retro scifi aesthetic :D
Bit too extreme for me.
insane
Genshin Impact downloading at 10mb/s today
I might actually start playing it today
also, I'm not a weeb, just generally interested in this chinese zelda copy paste, because I never played switch zelda 🙂
weapon durability the game
was watching Realms Deep and they showed some stuff in UE, custom dismemberment system
@foggy path I've wanted to do a true gore system with UE4 for ages now but it's a fairly long winded process to setup right. I don't even like gory stuff anymore (thanks real internet gore videos) but it seems like we haven't had a full on realtime system for it yet.
yeah I mean overly realistic gore is kind of meh
but I don't mind stuff that's kind of stupid and over the top
it was very interesting seeing the short bit on the stream which actually showed their tooling inside UE for it
they had a system that looked like it would allow you to assign different things into bones or something inside UE with custom editor UIs
lol probably not for that game :D
needs more Gorn

I think we will see a push to use their new ARM blueprints in construction and we might see something crazy in production worthy AI terms. Either that or some alignment to engines moving towards per pixel rendering.
I would really like to see competitive workstation-class ARM CPUs

@TimSweeneyEpic Can you please solve landscape problem in UE4? Its almost impossible to make mountains in it !!!
What is the landscape problem? I haven't tried to make any landscapes yet
Nope he's right. There have never been any mountains in any UE4 games. Only grey scaled offsets. I tried to make a mountain in UE4 once but it lacked the atomic structure to contain the entire thing.
You can now use the Cloth Brush with high poly meshes as a regular brush without being constrained to a fixed simulation area.

It's a character model for Unreal Tournament 3
I had a dream last night that there was a baby grizzly bear living in my house as a pet. But then it stopped wanting to go outside and look for its own food and didn't want to follow the rules of the house. So then I decided that there is no way this bear can stay in my house when it becomes bigger, and it is very unhealthy for it to get too reliant on my food. So I used food to trick it to get in the back of a pickup truck I rented for Enterprise and then I drove to the animal shelter and dropped the bear off so the experts could re-assimilate him to the wild.
It was an odd dream.
the wild being the borg and the enterprise being from starfleet?
Enterprise is a rental car company in the United States.
The bear would eat them.
Reminds me of that movie Sleepwalkers.
A short Scene of the Horrormovie Sleepwalker...
Amazing Scenes with Cats, i love this Animals
I left school 32 years ago
i just watched bill nye to code
damn that makes me feel old 32 fucking years lol
practically ancient
https://clips.twitch.tv/PuzzledEndearingVanillaRalpherZ he is on his prime too
I was just saying something recently to a friend about him having lost his clan in a game... Finding a group to game with is just like dating, once you're over 32, give up.
Because everyone is going to be younger and dumber than you are.
Pandemics are also pretty rough on dating
"How would you like to go hang out on a sidewalk and talk from two meters away?"
"Hey, girl... you wanna yell at each other about Robolox from opposite ends of a public park?"
the pandemic hasnt altered my chances for meeting ppl, I never leave the house anyway
🤔
Sure. You're just talking about a non-zero amount
🤔
Is anyone still using OkCupid?
Do you have to social distance if the girl you are dating is your cousin and you live in the same house?
Or step sister?
🤔
Or other socially unacceptable norm?
Is dating your step sister a "so.... oh. unacceptable. Misread. Not sure it really matters at that point.
🤔
I live in China, nobody here has any shared DNA with me.
Maybe you need to share some DNA ... if you know what I mean.
No.
I can teach you how to be single forever, trust me I have experience 😉
Being single is generally preferable than being in a relationship.
I guess that all depends on how your math plays out.
I'm always pulled in different directions with it.
damn that makes me feel old 32 fucking years lol
@mossy nexus It's good to feel old. It means you survived. Takes a lot to survive this hellhole.

i feel oddly excited today because i figured out how to do the portal effect in unreal engine... without changing the game engine code itself.
Congratulations
Science!
This was a triumph
now i just need to make a whole youtube series about it and wait for the 4 views to come rolling in.
you'll get more than four just from bots
bots are the only "people" that ever comment on my videos.
i keep deleting the comments.
reach for the stars
i'm being pessimistic... i do have some videos with 170k real views....
"Yeah ... sometimes not blowing up is the best you can hope for." "Way to reach for the stars."
but to be consistent on youtube i realistically need to quit my job and go full time on youtube
YouTube canceled my partnership by moving the goalposts before they had to pay me my 100 bucks
:D
i declined enabling ads in 2007. in retrospect maybe that was a mistake.
I dunno, unless you get craploads of views it probably wouldn't have netted much :P
i have a theory that i can't prove that youtube doesn't promote videos they can't monetize.
why would they want more people to view my videos if I have ads disabled for all of them?
I have a theory with anecdotal and logical support that YouTube is morally bankrupt
I definitely wouldn't want to do YouTube full time.
anyway, i'm still excited about figuring out the puzzle on how to use ue4 to make a "fake" portal 3 game.
A lot of people don't seem to realize that it is, in fact, a job
I would rather do ue4 work full time instead of my present job, but i know it won't pay as much, so i basically need to be ready to retire to do that.
It's a lot of work, you never know when they're going to change the rules, you never know when you'll get content ID matched on something that ... actually isn't even the thing that's being claimed, totally irrespective of any kind of fair use laws
Get job at google and live in a van for a 10 years and you'll have saved a lot of money!
You would probably have to live in a van to work in that area
i've already been working in the bay area for 21 years.. i'm actually pretty close to ready to retire, but my wife isn't ready for me to retire.
i live in the same zip code as google.
so you could probably afford to do YT full time then lol
Yes, probably.
In that case, just think about how if you DIDN'T live there, you'd actually be rich
..at least if you moved somewhere with lower living costs
if i ignore the cost of housing here.
instead i get a house on a 5000sqft lot (which is actually a lot for here but bad everywhere else)
most parts of the country put houses on quarter acre lots...
random question, anyone have a recommendation on logo animation software?
"I make 250k a year! But, it turns out, it's actually the equivalent of a custodial engineer in Nebraska because I live in a literal dumpster. There are used needles and everything."
@acoustic halo Animate is decent but it's more generalised than just logos
The real pro move is to get a remote job in the bay area while living somewhere cheaper
Get the bay area salary but none of the living costs
when i first started working in the bay area, figuring the cost of housing, I realized that I would only need $60k/yr in texas for the same lifestyle as 200k/yr in the bay area... unfortunately my starting salary in 1999 was $100k.
I did that for a 6 month contract and it was nice lol
@fathom wadi as in Adobe Animate?
the pandemic lets me work from home now, so at this point, it's unclear that where i live even matters.
yup
i've read that some companies are re-basing salaries based on the home address you claim.
some of them probably do that yeah
@fathom wadi do you happen to know if it has stuff like layer effects similar to photoshop? my use case requires two images and i need to have one negate the other during an animation
yeah its called masking
i have strong bias against using adobe products... because of the subscription model.. i would probably use blender for what i imagine you guys are talking about.
@hidden drift this is strictly for a 2d logo animation
Use a VPN so that you look like you are working from San Francisco. Then work from home in Kansas. Save money, get rich, die of Covid, success.
The subscription model is fine if you're using the products professionally because you can claim it in taxes or w/e
but it's a pain for personal use for sure
Animate is fairly complete in terms of code you can add to it and animation. It can also rig a 2d model if you want to go down that route. For something simple though, it excels
just use GIMP then?
ohh the rigging feature sounds very nice
Maybe.
GIMP can do it too
Krita4life
nobody likes working in GIMP tho
photoshop does too
i've been working in GIMP for as long as it has existed, so i actually know it better than I know photoshop
ive honestly never looked into using a photo editor for that, could be neat
MS Paint?
Photoshop has had some kind of animation stuff since at least CS6
I wish I had @hidden drift . I wasted too much time on Adobe products
the only adobe product i am in love with is postscript.. i've been programming in it since the early 90s
Even if AMDs new Navi beat out the RTX 3090, I don't think I would give AMD gpus a chance...
Flash was always my thing. So Animate is a natural successor for me. But I dont use it myself. My kid does
I never cared for GIMP. But I did move to Krita some time ago. The tool palette system still sucks.. and the text support is awful... but actually using it for stuff is pretty solid.
HTML5 got me off flash. I started doing animations directly in webpages without any plugins.
alright so for an animation of a logo moving around, requiring some effects like negating two layers, glowing, blurring, chromatic abberation, etc, would Photoshop work? I'm already subbed to PS and I doubt the trial of Animate would let me export what I need
I have a Krita window layout called "Mr. Dogshit" that sets up a single window across two displays... because while you can have floating tool palettes.. none of them dock to each other or scale if they aren't docked in the main window.
to be fair, it was actually chrome banning running flash that got me off flash
Unless they've improved the photoshop animation tools I don't really know if it can do that
They've been very rudimentary at least in the past
yeah and judging from videos, it doesnt look too promising
honestly just looks like it offers flipbooking
Yeah, like basic keyframed animation
I would do stop motion with paper cutouts first
lmao
At least that would have some style to it
alright well ill try digging into Animate, thanks fellas
the last thing I animated: https://nlaredo.github.io/playmidi.html (just hit the dismiss button and start typing or use the mouse or touchscreen or a midi keyboard)
yeah, it's a visualizer i made.. that i'm now re-making in unreal engine.
intended mostly for piano streamers on twitch/youtube/etc.
So, my initial impression is "how did I accidentally open DOS edit?"
the particles are just boxes drawn on a canvas.
nice :)
@acoustic halo the trial is a full product. No restrictions except perhaps in some licensing deep in the crevasse of Adobe's legalese.
V and F are both F4 KERNEL PANIC
the sparks are just math drawing a funky half circle with random points where the radius expands.
last time I really did anything in canvas the performance of that was abysmally bad lol
but this was in like.. 2007
turns out this canvas thing runs at 240fps on my gaming laptop
so it's entertaining for sure.
@hidden drift I quit Flash and web development around the time HTML5 took off and Bootstrap took over how people wanted their sites made. Made the jump to game dev and never looked back.
I think it might be very telling that when I turned on the fire thing (because of course I would) that I thought it looked kinda like a dick
i did another example where i blew apart someone's jpg image into 80000 pixels in html+javascript and it animated at 240fps for me too
where the image basically "exploded" in a pattern
you could do it with very high performance using shaders in webgl nowadays
Imagine trying to do this in Flash. Ahem. 🙂 https://paveldogreat.github.io/WebGL-Fluid-Simulation/
by profession i'm actually a C programmer writing things like BIOS for servers.
so html+javascript is far from my domain
There was actually that sorta stuff done in Flash iirc
Flash rendering was decently quick
Is this sound like a 30% PWM?
marc: i just started trying to teach myself webgl and then i discovered unreal engine 4 and asked myself "why am i doing this to myself?"
love the look of that fluid sim
@foggy path not for the good stuff. When I hit the 3d domain, it was running awful with around 2000 polys. That being said, you could fake something similar I guess
i made my first shader based material in ue4 just last week.
I did see some fluid dynamics in flash tho. Shame it will all be lost soon
looks like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WUgb6Q9h30
My first shader was a dynamic spline I used to create winline indicators for a slot machine. Made me realise that if you can get the data in, the sky is the limit.
if you want drugs.avi, I need to upload the footage of my nightmare shader that happened by accident
that music is super chill
the original video had a flythrough, but OBS recording got all frame-droppy on me so i had to cut that part out.
next time i'm just going to record the output externally over hdmi
i am guessing the problem is the laptop is displaying at 240fps and recording at 24fps in OBS.. or that unreal engine somehow blocks the gpu video encoders
if the game is maxing out your GPU it used to cause stutters in OBS due to render lag
recent OBS versions should no longer do that at least if your windows 10 is up to date and you run OBS as admin
they added GPU scheduling into Windows 10 and OBS supports it now
i don't run obs as admin. i guess that's my problem
but since i have an atem mini pro, i can just record with that next time.
plugins could add streaming support fairly easily to UE4 I reckon. I mean the entire thing is slate so its render info is already there. Just need to get it out in a format via an interface. hmmm. tempted to go wrap the entire editor in a retainer box and see what happens 😄
gpu scheduling has generally just shit up background performance as I've read
Does that mean that OBS actually can do something else with it?
actually now that i think about it, whenever i start a game, the nvidia experience asks me if i want to start some overlay.. i should use that to record.
The problem with the render lag in OBS was that if the game uses 100% GPU, there's nothing left for OBS to do scene composition
I wouldn't. That thing lags my editor really bad
In fact, turn it off and you might find OBS works fine
My understanding of the GPU scheduling fix was that windows can now prioritize OBS over the game, so there's always resources on the GPU for the OBS rendering
i think for me the fix will be to just make the game rate-limit itself to 24fps.
i just need to figure out how to do that in unreal engine.
with my gaming laptop defaulting to 240fps, these things seem to want to run with full framerate except when running in the editor, which for some reason limits itself to 60fps
What I read about was that that any kind of video stuff just ate shit and dropped frames if a game was running... so it just didn't care about background stuff at all
though yesterday i was seeing 120fps and i'm not sure why
the editor runs at 120fps by default
(also after 3 weeks working in blueprint, i learned that I should have started all my projects in C++)
I dunno, all my BP projects worked fine if I needed to add C++ stuff into them
If you can code for sure. I setup my projects with base C++ classes for most everything because interfacing between BP/C++ used to be a pain, so I got in the habit. It's less painful these days, but still, it gives you a platform to place time critical calculations and optimisations. Better doing it sooner than later.
i made the mistake of making structures in BP and wanting to use them in C.
(because I'm a C programmer ... as i mentioned earlier)
you can access it in C++ but it's accessed the long way around
turned out easier to just kill the BP and rewrite in C++
kinda like checking the asset registry if it exists then getting the ref/pointer etc
yeah simpler to make them in C++
Yeah I've had to move a few structs and enums to C++
then anything i want to do in BP can just extend C++ classes, and i'm golden.
My philosophy is to not overthink how I make stuff... it's a fairly trivial task usually to move something over to C++, and when I'm building new systems BP's are faster to work with when I don't necessarily know how I want it to work
I live in a cycle of necessary recycling due to blueprints. They are just too quick to prototype with. So I end up deciding which to re-write. Not the fastest workflow but sometimes you need to know if it works before you get serious on the code
yeah
i guess i'm in a unique position in that I am porting code i originally wrote in C for linux in 1992 to run at the command line to use unreal engine 4 as its "compatibility layer" to be multiplatform and have nice visuals.
I'm doing a lot of prototyping for new game systems and such and I just have to have an implementation of something before I can tell if it's going to work :P
I converted C source code a couple of times and aside from some confusion with char types and how to convert, it was fairly straight forward.
most things would be, but this includes a software synthesizer.
or let me phrase it this way: i'm porting my midi player with soft synth to unreal engine
a sine wave abuser 😄
Unreal DAW.
it does know how to abuse sine waves, yes.
I had a plan for a Markov Chain for game music creation using the added Audio Engine a couple of versions ago and never started it. It's been in the back of my mind for ages.
and yes, it might be an unreal daw at some point, for some definition of daw.
If I could just plug my Kontakt stuff into an Unreal DAW I would be happy.
by the time i'm done you'll be able to plug some VSTs into unreal engine.
I would be happy with Music XML and let the engine do the rest. Perhaps some UMG Sheet Music and Midi Notation editor
unfortunately since i'm still working my paying job full time, by the time I'm done, years will have passed.
I will be dead by then.
I think I could run up a Midi stave pretty quick in UMG. I mean all the tools are there.
