I once ran a cpu at 110 degrees for a while. It shutdown eventually, but it would still fire up. Then reach the temps again and shut down. The thermostat had gone on it so it was a literal crash rather than intel's power saving kicking in.

my current I9 was running at around 100C at full load and it was like that for over a year for sure, finally got an AIO like a week ago and it's now under 75C

i've never thought of cooling my hdds but I do happen to have a fan pulling air past because it helps the whole system. My case is an older style model (psu at the top) so its a bit tricky to get it just right.

I9 9900k produces way too much heat, with the cooler I got now at full loads it maxes out at around 75C, but if I run that intel diagnostics stress test it still reaches 95C... I mean that stress puts unrealistic load on it but still

yeah. I once had a collision issue that was simply my movement code was putting the object within the space of the other object and the collision wasn't counted, but it treated it like an overlap. I only noticed when I caught the overlap. Then I used that to adjust the object if it happened again.
not saying thats your issue, but just a little example of why I hate collision. It's too moody for me :p

That was back when Unity was new and all the programmers wanted to use it because it was easier than Unreal 3 for them, but the graphics downgrade was massive.
At least the programmers at my studio thought it was easier. I can't speak for all programmers.

So yes, big games will most likely edit Unity source for their purposes. Additionally, for hyper performant code, there is inline ASM. IDK if you can do that in Unity C# scripting?

What the numbers are, I can't say that. But Shanghai and Beijing were not swamped with corona-virus deaths. Hospitals were functioning like normal and people were able to get supplies delivered and return to work in a timely manner.
I think a lot of this has to do with the brutal sacrifice of the entire HuBei province by the National Government.
Those people got locked in with the virus running wild. I bet the death count there is 5x what they are reporting, but who really knows.

One of the main differences in places like Japan and South Korea is that they have a much better understanding of the the number of cases and where it is spreading from.
In the US they have been doing so little testing it is just taking a shot in the dark when they say how many cases.

So I realised what was wrong with the Epic Launcher. It wasn't bringing up the login after a session expired so it was just hanging (not by process, just waiting for the login to complete but it never would). So I restarted it and it brought it up. Then I got hit with 4 messages about free games. Which is nice as I was about to do some Unreal Engine work, which is why I opened the launcher, but now I might just go play a game 😄

sounds cool. You could have some kind of ratio between heightmap and spectrum analysis to produce something. Maybe apply a markov chain to filter out some of the worse ratios.

Anyone had issues with Firefox tearing during video playback? I have hardware acceleration on but it makes no difference. Doesn't happen in chrome (so im about to use chrome)

Turning off hardware acceleration in the browser has been my fix for that in the past

Spend now 24 hours on a project that worked and after migrating into another of my project stopped working, but no errors. The nodes where all the right one. It just didnt worked. After i renewed the same cast it started working again.

The beauty of software is it does exactly what you tell it unless it's bugged at the source. So when Unreal breaks, I check myself first.

debugging is an art to itself. If you have debug symbols + profiler + understand the code you are working with, you can fix pretty much everything.

Debug Symbols are a set of information that explains what certain objects are. ie. If you debug without symbols, you cannot see some variables in Visual Studio. But if you add them, you can see them all. This is because Visual Studio doesn't know what your code is. It could be anything by the time it gets compiled. The debug symbols explain it so VS can give you more information.
The profiler is built into the editor and gives you information about what is using memory, cpu, frametime, etc.
If you download the source from Github, and get the pre-requisites, it will install the debug symbols usually.
it might offer you the option if you get it via Visual Studio launcher or the Unreal Launcher. This is because they can be a large filesize.
Anyone interested in spending the next 5 years pissing into the wind for no compensation?

multiplayer isn't as bad as everyone says. It's just one of those exponentially complex things. The more code you do, the more complex it seems. But if you just want a lobby + game with a login and your game to replicate basics, its easier than you think.

I remember working on a game and the guy said we would be doing a multiplayer version later. So I advised him that its best to do it from the start. He was under the impression it would be easy to just replicate a few things. But needless to say, the multiplayer never arrived.

if you make a mesh, and you want collision to be exported with it, you create a meshname.UCX that matches the original meshname. Then export as FBX. Unreal then knows to read the FBX for the collision too and builds it.

Odd you are a Steve Vai fan and don't know Zappa. Most people who go for the technical guitar stuff have heard of him. I guess Vai and Malmsteen get the limelight because they went more mainstream.

I have listened to this album so much I know almost every note. Dweezil Zappa toured with it last year and I told my wife I had to go see it. Like a pilgrimage. But she forgot to buy me a ticket in time and it sold out. I could cry thinking about it.
