I know that Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, reminds me a lot of tRump.
hahaha
Emperor ;)
It is actually not emperor the translation
but i do not know the translation
King is more correct
I actually do know a bit about German history, but I just try not to not pretend like I know about subject I am just moderatly familiar with.
He was King of Prussia, and the King of Prussia was the leader of the German Empire.
generally i would translate that to King
yeah
but still the word wasnt Emperor
he was never ever called emperor
which is very relevant
Because Germany was made of more than just Prussia.
yeah hw as König of X Y Z and Kaiser of the German Reich
he was NOT emperor of German Reich, that term was never used
there was just this "grade" above König
But by definition, he was the Emperor. The English definition of the word Emperor.
but i dont know that there is another term
yeah no
emperor implies some more things
the Kaiser was more like a president
and you wouldnt call your american president emperors at the time ;)
the problem here is only the missing translation of hte word
wait i check what leo.org says
It was a monarchy.
yeah and emperor is not the word for a monarchy
can be ;) but shouldnt
DAMN IT
you are right
It can be, if the Kingdom controls other Kingdoms, making it am Empire of multiple states.
the ACTUAL translation of the term IS emperor
yeaH I SE
yeah i see it even clearly states here: Emperor of Germany
damn
the word we use for the Emperor of star wars is IMPERATOR
so the gemran translation of Emperor is Imperator
Anyways, I have some interesting quotes about Willhelm II that I like.
so in german language there is a difference in those terms
i am not surprised that this difference is washed away in english
and i am also not surprised that we germans made up new terms for leadership that doesnt sync with the world
"Führer" was just another one in that regard
yeah... we are really into that leadership topic ;)
Germany - we are in the empire business
You know, we use the term Imperator for Julius Cesar ;)
thats why i am so disturbed that Kaiser actually maps to the same word in english
somehow i feel there is something to see in that ;)
gifted, with a quick understanding, sometimes brilliant, with a taste for the modern,—technology, industry, science—but at the same time superficial, hasty, restless, unable to relax, without any deeper level of seriousness, without any desire for hard work or drive to see things through to the end, without any sense of sobriety, for balance and boundaries, or even for reality and real problems, uncontrollable and scarcely capable of learning from experience, desperate for applause and success,—as Bismarck said early on in his life, he wanted every day to be his birthday—romantic, sentimental and theatrical, unsure and arrogant, with an immeasurably exaggerated self-confidence and desire to show off, a juvenile cadet, who never took the tone of the officers' mess out of his voice, and brashly wanted to play the part of the supreme warlord, full of panicky fear of a monotonous life without any diversions, and yet aimless, pathological in his hatred against his English mother.
And as I learned more about Bismark and Bismark's balanced leadership with Willhelm I, this quote started having a lot more power to me.
He believed in force, and the 'survival of the fittest' in domestic as well as foreign politics ... William was not lacking in intelligence, but he did lack stability, disguising his deep insecurities by swagger and tough talk. He frequently fell into depressions and hysterics ... William's personal instability was reflected in vacillations of policy. His actions, at home as well as abroad, lacked guidance, and therefore often bewildered or infuriated public opinion. He was not so much concerned with gaining specific objectives, as had been the case with Bismarck, as with asserting his will. This trait in the ruler of the leading Continental power was one of the main causes of the uneasiness prevailing in Europe at the turn-of-the-century.
yeah i mean we did had a WW ;-)
but you must see
he was that kind of candidate you told about before ;)
not so bad
he WAS very impressive
I think if his farther Fredrick III had not died the same year he inhereted the throne, then the two World Wars might not have happened, or at least not in the same way.
well, it was kinda clear that WW1 happened
if you watch german history
it was ABSOLUTE CLEAR that we wanted to punch something and took any chance
we WERE the biggest war monger on the planet
I just think Willhelm II's parents were very progressive in comparison to their son.
we ARE responsible for most of the historical disassters that hindered civilization come forward
like best funny moment in that regard
Germany: "Oh we have guns, they don't have guns... lets take them!"
we LITERALLY just started military actions cause we had guns before the others around
Bismark is more along the lines of who I would support over Willhelm II.
I don't support either one in policy, but one is stable and steady in the way he goes after his goals (that hurt the rest of Europe most of the time).
yeah, Bismark is ultra famous :D but sadly he was probably more a Biden in real ;)
he did put hitler where he was
Bismark could have single handed prevented that all
to be fair: it was no clear easy way to prevent it, but he was in the position
and made the wrong decisions
the last wrong decisions were the ones who actually put hitler into the absolute power that he held till end of war
The thing is, the other nations of Europe knew what Bismark wanted.
With Wilhelm II, he just wanted to assert his will on other people and prove he was the big man. It wasn't about a goal, it wasn't something to be reasoned with.
and what i heared so far historical, i am kinda sure that the german people themselves had this mentality
somehow i am kinda getting the feeling that we were America, that we felt the same way
Maybe.
that not only our leaders were mad often but the people behind them were also arrogant and believing that germany earns MORE
we cant REALLY know that good, cause we have no full "life snapshop"
sadly
but it makes ABSOLUTE sense
like think about it
Hitler was standing there saying "DO YOU WANT TOTAL WAR?" and the crowd cheered
they cheered the loudest
this wasnt an enforced cheer, that was a real emotional cheer
you know that speech?
So what would have happened if Austria had become part of unified Germany, making Austria the largest power of the German States and Prussia being second?
think about the gemran terriotry is kinda weird
if you see the original german landarea
we practical owned half europe
If I remember correctly, it was actions taken by Bismark that drove the wedge that kept Austria out of unified Germany.
But I may be remembering wrong.
i mean before just in history
at some points ;)
mostly it was that austria was/is the legacy of another empire
i am very certain that whatever unifing was talked about the austrians would have did everything against that
against not for ;) hehe
Hitler was really the crazy one
"The German Question" was a debate in the 19th century, especially during the Revolutions of 1848, over the best way to achieve the unification of Germany. From 1815 to 1866, about 37 independent German-speaking states existed within the German Confederation. The Großdeutsche ...
This is what I was thinking about.
Couldn't remember the specifics.
yeah that yellow area
not have gonna happen ever
way way way way too far historical away, thats the point i mean
like austria specific is kinda a root of one of our root enemies
and everything in that direction is "high war zone" historical
or lets say: war zones we germans never conquered ;)
This says that the "Großdeutsche Lösung" was supported by Austria.
i mean i dont know i just say what i think given the history of austria, might be that the austrian government was supporting it
it would be weird
for sure in a unified gremany that would have been the first for revolution ;)
Well, they would be the ones with the most power.
might be
probably was that the idea of the government
to be part of that
and so get the higher power overall
but they would had to fight with the classical "you are not really german" problem
so even with being the biggest power
Prussia would have been subject to the decisions of Austria in that case.
they would have the lowest blood flow of german heritage ;)
so it would be a tight pot
boiling pot
something
i am btw actually from that poland area
i mean not me me, but my grandfather
My grandma is from Berlin.
Königsberg
so far far far top right spot
on that area
in poland
and that was like TOTAL german germany
they all had to flee when the war started
You mean the former Prussian area?
yeah
there was a lot of people fleeing from there when the war started cause they didnt thought that ends good and then later they had to, cause of end of war and poland and blabla
I learned a bit about the history of Prussia and the complicated nature between the German people of the area and the local, I guess Polish... people of the area.
yeah
Been a while, so I can't remember much.
there are not that many germans since after WW2 poland did a bit of cleansing
and send germans back to germany as war prisoners
But basically the Duke of Prussia or whatever inside the Holy Roman Empire took the land outside the Holy Roman Empire, creating two different Prussias. One that was subordinate to the Holy Roman Empire and one where the Duke of Prussia was the King and he called himself King.
That made the Holy Roman Emperor mad or something.
Then at one point Poland controlled the land in between the two Prussias... So Prussia had North Eastern Poland and the Holy Roman Empire terriory, but Poland had North Western Poland.
and germany just cared for the resources of the noth ;)
historical seen the only red line going through the reasons why there were germans ;)
Well, it is still easier than Chinese history...
5,000+ years...
thats shit is crazy
and so pointless in some way
like they fought each other in the same area all the time forever
Well, you get back far enough and it is impossible to seperate fiction from written history.
especially given that no one outside could have seen anything
its like there are ONLY the sources of those who wrote history
and no alternative source of history
and often the winner probably burned down the archives of the loser ;)
and so rewrote history
writing history is so fantastic :D
History in general is kind of insane...
Like there is some Greek dude in Roman controlled Egypt making a coin operated water fountain full of wine, 2,000 years ago...
Put a coin in, and it shoots wine into your mouth... WTF...
i still like the guy who send soldiers to attack the ocean
kinda like a historical trump
you know what you should look up?
War Equipment Mass Production.................. might be different wording but i once watched a huge block of youtube videos about how the old empires produced their weapons and armors and general war equipment
crazy! :D
Much of the writing that I do takes inspiration from real history. A lot of the time I avoid topics like war, because I just feel like battle has been way overdone.
But when I do write about war type stuff it is always about the arms race between two factions or things like how having a well organized supply chain to bring food to soldiers wins wars.
morning
Through the different short stories I write, it starts out with the two sides using catapults and such, and then slowly progressing into gunpowder. But they end up developing things in different weird ways.
Has anyone seen this short made in unreal https://youtu.be/0qYU11m0lBU
Aengea, was my graduation project for college and was accomplished in a 6 week time period, using Unreal engine for real time ray tracing and Blender Eevee.
Music by Kai Engel
Nope.
new video from unity is cool
@north torrent so you read Clausewitz? ;)
No.
if you like the details of war history with supply chain and co. then you need to play D.A.K.
Deutsche Afrika Korps
I mostly like stories about cute things...
it is a very precise reconstruction of the situation so the external factors are totally fixed
like when which supply arrives where
and you need to make supply chains and actual care for the morale of your soldiers
its like one of the most precise war simulator ever written
and Clausewitz is what you MUST read if you wanna talk serious about technical details of war
Clausewitz is THE strategical reference work
tactic more like
you take the strategy of Sun Tsu and you get the tactic of Clausewitz and you are unstoppable
Part of what is going on in my story right now is they have discovered how to make durrable rubber from trees found in the tropic.
So the advantage of making rubber soled shoes is pretty huge, so each major faction wants to have a presence in the tropical area in order to 'politely insist' that the locals farm said trees.
But then the mafia boss ends up controlling most of the trade on shoes...
hehe
I try to be believable enough that it doesn't sound like I am explaining things with magic, but I am not shooting for ultra realistic. More just fun slice of life stories set in the early industrial revolution of this odd world.
wasnt it general lee who ordered his troop to conquer a shoe factory cause they had none anymore? ;)
just got reminded of that
Basically, imagine if Rome had never fallen and the industrial revolution happened around 900ce.
you must check the chemistry
Shoes are important.
and the amount of people
also relevant
industrial revolution in relation to amount of people actually doing it
and the demand is also ULTRA relevant
The mafia boss was originally just using shoes to transport outlawed booze in. He just wanted something he could hide a bottle of illegal whisky inside.
The population of my world is way to small for it to realistically be the industrial revolution. But I will compromise that for the sake of having the story feel smaller.
what about them having early access to nuclear power
theoretical, in a world very science orientated, you might reach ultra early the point of understanding and using nuclear power
But I have studied how the introduction to South American foods like Potatoes, Tomatoes, and Corn helped Europe maintain the population needed to advance the Industrial Revolution.
the basic concept is kinda simple and ultra powerful if used in smaller context
i mean a lot of people die while producing the energy but the advantage would be ennourmus
:D
actually not even that, they just need to learn that lead needs to be covered
so there is a small path
that just didnt happened
The highest tech available by the secret organization is a high voltage battery...
You saw Iron Sky? ;)
And the hive mind creatures that live under the sea have some hardcore knowledge of genetic engineering.
They don't have manufacturing in any way shape or form, they just grow plants or breen animals to meet all their needs.
If they need an elevator, they grow a plant that works like an elevatior. If they need a gun, they grow a plant that shoots seeds at high speeds. If they need a car they breed an animal that can work as a car.
A long time ago.
both are practical scifi versions of what you just described ;)
It is by no means a new idea.
Zerg vs Terran, Bugs vs Human
yeah just felt now heavily reminded :D
of a race that genetical engineers their "weapons"
I just wanted to play around with deep sea creatures. I feel like there are animals in Earth's oceans far more alien than the things you see in most Sci Fi movies.
hope you checked the videos on youtube about
that giant squid thing is crazy
and we wouldn't probably know about them without oil greed! haha :D
history.... classy
I treat my short stories like Sci-Fi, even though it is set in early industrial revolution times.
In a lot of ways it is quite the oposite of Steam Punk though...
i mean that would be the way how they use nuclear power
boiling water
to use for everything else
:D
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1236350/ that is btw the documentation i mentioned earlier
There isn't much grand or exciting about my world. They aren't using steam power to make jetpacks or robots or anything like that, they mostly just use water wheels to power garmet factories.
if you can get access to it in english, its TOTALLY worth it, very compact while still complete
give htem nuclear power
:D
But the people of said world are actually fairly modern thinking. I don't in any way try to fit them into the way people of the industrial revoultion viewed the world.
It is very much an oxymoron.
that would fit to my idea ;)
The world just formed out of the slice of life stories I wanted to tell. On its own it sounds like a bit of a mess.
if there is no metal revolution if there is not much reason to use metal cause of less war
btw what i also find a VERY interesting point: Religion in the time of englands history
not specific the relgiion in that time
but more the fact how much it influencede war
that practical all about honor and everything was just supplied through the religion of all participations in the game
I have many short stories that cover many character. The characters overlap into each others stories a lot. I have 2 characters that have a serial aspect to them, where they have a handful of stories that stand alone but slowly progress the characters.
The one character is a journalist, but his job is more like one of those guys on YouTube that reviews tech. The difference is he review Industrial Revolution era technology and writes about it useing a printing press.
He ends up getting dragged into the mafia while writing an article about the groundbreaking process of making 'Converse' type shoes. He is writing about the rubber process specifically and how they are superior to leather soles on shoes.
I took one of my short stories and am turning it into a game. I will probably take a second one and do the same after I finish.
But most of them I just do for fun. Write it, put it in a folder, leave it there.
The game I am working on is meant to be a really small story driven game that only lasts about 90 minutes.
The core mechanics are just simply investigating or interacting with objects and dialogue with other characters.
I am keeping it simple and will slowly build more complex stuff as I go.
You can get rid of compiling shaders
it's 1 material
If you have enough power hehe
No it's a change that impacts all hehe
are you pulling my plonker?
I worked in the game industry back in 2012ish, and have been part of many game projects. I have never had a successful solo project though, so I try to just do simple, managable stuff.
that story line sounds less simple :D hehe
you need to bring it over to the people, like all kind of
not saying you cant do that, just saying that its hard in a game ;)
The stories I write are much more complex than what I do as a game designer.
I just write that stuff for fun and as a thought exercise. I don't ever really plan to share them with lots of people.
hehe ok
The story for my game is just a journalist who is trying to write a newspaper article. He travels to a town where a labor strike is in progress and tries to get to the bottom of the story.
In the end he ends up getting pulled into the personal problems of both sides of the labor strike and has to question his own rules of telling an impartial story.
There are only 6 characters total and a small village in the mountains.
wow, i am already not a big fan of single player games, but that sounds extra boring :D no offense but i also dont see your imagination of it
but i already assume you dont wanna make it for "everybody"
It is very much meant to be the kind of game only a niche market of people will like.
right? more like about your vision less about being accepted?
when you said that i directly thought of "It Came From The Desert"
but even there you have more than 6 characters ;)
I just want to make something that is uniquely my vision, just for the fun of it. I already know it won't sell.
I want to eventually make everything I do co-op story driven.
I don't have much interest in designing traditional multiplayer. I play those games, I hold nothing against them, just not what I personally feel drawn to create.
I like the idea of story driven games that you can play with a friend who is in the same room. Not online co-op.
But I guess that's just how I grew up playing games on Atari and NES and such.
The survival concept has its charme and could be used in a way that covers all topics
practical its all about having a permanent running world
in survival games its always a bare world, but it could also be a viral town
i meaen like running a world on a server as user
so that you can run a local game to it singe player
or let a friend join via coop
or even have deathmatch in the environment without the story mode as a game mode
i think that kind of direction where multiplayer and single player can be covered would be a future way i hope comes up more often
i love playing ark but it has no sense
I don't plan on adding combat for my first few games. If I finish my first 3 small games, I might make combat something in my 4th.
yeah no i just say, that there are paths these days that could be ending up a good merge of all worlds
not necessary making it combat at first
but open up a world where later that is just a map for a game mode
that can grow into so much at once
My game right now has 1 gameplay aspect and 1 dialogue aspect. If I make a second game I will add one more gameplay aspect and 1 more dialogue aspect. Then if I make a third game it will be +1 and +1 again.
Maybe eventually if I keep at it long enough I will have more complex stuff.
But I have a day job that makes me money. I am free from the need to make games other people like.
If I make stuff it is simply because I feel drawn to it.
I like storytelling more than I like game design. My interests are in using the environment to tell a story, cinematography in games, using colors and shape language to tell a story or develop characters, and writing music to fit the stories that I tell.
you know that the colors of the clothes of Breaking Bad are specifically design to cover the characters development?
That's the kind of stuff I study and try to implement.
and i recently heard that the intro of seinfeld was every time specific designed for the specific standup intro he made
heard is good, saw a youtube video about it :D wording these days
these days you dont "Heard" things anymore ;)
If by some miracle people did like my game and stories, which is by no means something I think will happen, I would hire people who are more interested in the game design aspect of game design to work with me, while I focused on interactive storytelling.
thats ALWAYS the plan ;)
I'll work toward that goal, but I am very familiar with how slim the odds are. In the end I am just doing this because I enjoy it and am not about to quit my day job.
But I do work hard at this and will try my best to make something a niche audience might like.
I do honestly believe that there is a niche audience that is looking for story driven games that are more relaxing than action packed.
That doesn't mean I will by any means make money in that niche market, or that I am even right at all that the market exists.
But I have logically thought about it when choosing to make the game I am making.
yeah but you cant make them pay 400 EUR per game to compensate for being a niche
ALTHOUGH you can try, there is a steam game with all DLCs combined costing something 2000 EUR 8-D
I actually plan on giving my 1st game away for free.
thats always good start
If I were to be sucessful, it would be a down the road thing.
it would be still a shame if you have some fans and then dont continue! :D
niche is a better market than flooded
well depends on what definition of niche ;) he means a niche of customers not a niche of product design, at least it sounds like 8-D
remember when they made this app in The big bang theory? ;)
sry dont watch that 😛
1st game for free, 2nd game for free, if people seemed to want more maybe do a Kickstarter for people who want me to make them faster. Maybe sell the 3rd or 4th for $5 assuming they are still only 2 hour games.
If I ever did get enough donations to hire 2 or 3 people to help then I would make slightly bigger games for maybe $10.
"How much we should take?" "Giving that you wanna buy a boat, probably 1 million" "And what if we make a preview version for half a million to make them interested?"
I would never do a Kickstarter without first having a few games to show people. Show people that "this is what I can do in 1 years time as a solo dev" and see if they want to help me keep going with it.
@north torrent i actually get employee for free
i just have no idea how to ujse them without more prepared targets especially giving that they would be untrained ;)
i always think about how i can use that
the government unemployment agency can give me as much as i like
and i just pay like a small part of their payment
I decided a long time ago that I will be a solo dev until I have enough money to pay someone a fair industry rate.
It is easier for me to just do it myself or purchase assets than it is to deal with free labor or undedicated volunteers.
i like to train my friend i hired through that ;)
he is a noob and wee joke about it a lot
but he is eager to learn
and i really like the idea to train more people
and just scale
I totally get that, but I personally don't want to keep dealing with the disapoinment of working with people who aren't as passionate as me.
more games! MORE GAMES!!! :D
yeah, my dad had the same mentality as you, that might be the reason why i am less into that
and i got A LOT of disappointment
but i just cant stop believing in people
cause i dont wanna be in a world where i dont believe in people
I am by no means recomending other people walk the same path I am. I just chose this for myself and enjoy it.
i think thats called stupid 8-D
well, there was no one at the death bed of my dad beside me
there was no funeral
just saying ;-)
take it or leave it :D just wanted to add this for completeness
Well, there is a difference between my hobby and the rest of my life.
Just because I do my hobby solo doesn't mean I don't trust people in other parts of my life.
hehe ok :D my dad had as hobby his job, electronic engineer, master of metal detection
and spyware ;)
I hated having my hobby as my job. That is why I left the game industry.
Now I am an elementary school teacher.
haha and i am going other around
i am so done doing business software development
and i once made a gameserver provider
actually at the time the best gameserver provider on the market
I've thought about maybe doing something else than software for work but frankly it all pays like ass and doesn't have as nice work environment ¯_(ツ)_/¯
which provider was that Getty
Sounds vaguely familiar 🤔 Did you do HL1 servers
we had 50 promo CounterStrike servers ;)
we had 150 games
i think around 500 mods
and 20.000 seettings via web interface
Ah yeah could be I recognize the name from around that time then :)
my normal day started with going on those counterstrike servers via RCOn
and saying "HALLO HARTZ 4 EMPFAENGER!"
lol
they were btw all full
like 50 servers, max players, full
and you know what?
all de_dust
\o/
90% of the servers we sold were counter strike
well i hate them all
I honestly like going to a job and working hard.
Teaching 4th graders is something I find fun at time and super annoying at others. It isn't something I would do as a hobby for free, but it certainly is a job I am happy with.
It makes me a lot happier than trying to get paid for my hobby and trying to make money from my art.
i was paid by company to buy counterstrike
i was the Assault Cube player more
;)
i also made there a huge wave
I am the guy who made the seerver that made 60% of the online gaming traffic of assault cube
till i got banned
why? cause i gave to the people what the developers didnt wanted them to give ;)
never do that
devs dont like that one bit
like a de_dust remake in assault cube ;-)
Devs don't like players and players don't like devs.
well depends
that is one thing i TOTALLY wanna change
cause part of my business plan is clearly saying: we want to offer support 24/7 and actually interact with the community
thats why i want to be less attached to my games to be able to allow that to happen without bad feelings
i want them to define where the game should go
dedicated employee for the project to observe that
I personally think offering 24/7 support just means you will eventually receive 24/7 abuse from a fandom that you can't possibly please them all.
haha well i mean it more like that 24/7 someone is actually checking the forum posts and actually gives professional replies
and that if some proven customer emaisl in that he gets a reply
of a human
i dont want to have dedicated employes on that tho, that is then overall mixed with other games
and then made happen through technology
so i just need to bring up a 24/7 crew for all games to take inthe flow
I like talking to people about games and getting opinions of others. But if I ever had a toxic fandom who wanted to go off on every little thing I would just shut the whole thing down and leave them with a cliffhanger that never got resolved.
Fuck you guys, I don't owe you anything.
haha yeah i think its important that you are there as company from start on
and that you are mostly the first reply on questions
and then you get a community that "fights" for you
you just need to show them that you listen
i think its doable
i saw it, i also saw a lot of doing it wrong
Well, if you can do it then you are a better man than I.
not per se by game compoanies but by communities
well i will try!
important is to be realistic
i think
one huge point
that all gamedev companies do wrong is not binding the community into the processes
oh look Extras button just fixed magically
i think the best you can do is telling the people who works on the shit and what those people do in times of stress
I'm just naturally a hatable person though, so I figure I shouldn't even bother.
I'll be transparent about what I do and what fans can expect, but I won't even promise that the fans have any say in anything.
that you are involving them more into it
thats all you need!
if you are transparent it will work out
and no one can hate you
its really kinda simple
especially as one dev
the problem is tho
if you are shitty
then you cant hide it ;)
hehee
i just assume thats not the case but i just wanted to say
People will always find a way to hate me, that's just the nature of my life.
yeah but if others tell them how wrong they are
then you are more relaxed about it
the problem with bad interactions online is often
that its just "you vs him"
and no one else gives a statement
cause they are not in it
but if you have a bigger follower group on your topic
then this is more... dynamic
the hive protects you and gives your statement
just thijnk about No Man Sky ;)
they fucked up so hard and still got fans left
i dont think they feel bad about all the haters
cause they got a good bunch of actual fans
(i am none of those ;) i just wanted to state the fact)
Well, like I said, I want to make at least 2 games that I release for free. People can play those games and know what I am capable of.
If they choose to put money into that, they know what to expect.
I'm not going to try to be a salesman, I'll just show them the work I've done and let them decide if they want to pay for more.
I dunno if you should sell your work short by being like that
at some point you need to be a little salesman cause even tho you know you have a niche group, you still want them to actually hear that it exists so that you know if they like it or not
I mean yeah if you really want to give 'em for free then sure
but if you make good shit people will be happy to pay for them
The idea is that people play 90 minute game, decide if they want a full game of that, and if they do maybe they will support my next project.
what he could make is actually reality items as support way
in such a good designed world, you might can make extra products and people can buy them
hehehe
shareware is a sound concept tbh
that is so 90s ;)
Coronavirus Simulator is a clicker that will allow you to see the world on behalf of the coronovirus, understand its feelings and help it to seize power over the whole world. Great game to relax after a working day. Several different locations, various modifications to infect ...
Feb 21, 2020
hey i need to sleep its 11 am here... fuck i kill my life
I actually want to go local with my stuff, go to local video game and comic book and anime conventions, set up a booth, and sell my game for the cost of the usb drives I put them on (you can get them for about $3 each if you buy them in bulk from a company that will print your logo on them).
I want to do things from the grassroots level. Show the game to people face to face, let them know I am a real person who is just doing the best I can, create a real world connection and sell them a $3 piece of plastic with my game on it.
Let that spread if people like it. If they don't, I am happy to eat the losses I paid for the booth at said convention. My day job allows me to spend at least $1,000 on marketing my game in the next year, so I'll take that gamble.
I'm looking at this scifi revolver asset on marketplace
and the barrel doesn't line up with the rotating cylinder at all 🤔
the barrel is at the top fo the gun while the cylinder is way below it
Don't question the design!
lmaooooooooooooooo look at him go https://twitter.com/justindchapman/status/1231336002175717376
Mad Mike Hughes just launched himself in a self-made steam-powered rocket and crash landed. Very likely did not survive. #MadMike #MadMikeHughes https://t.co/svtviTEi8f

I saw a kite surfer get higher than that
he probably would've gotten like at least 50ft higher if his landing parachute didn't deploy 0.1 seconds into the launch
the round Earth conspiracists offed him, they dont want you to know the truth
Every news asking for the video usage, and people making fun in a video where the guy dies, another remind of the piece of shit planet we live at
And you posting that here making fun too
not to mention people just casually posting videos online where people die for real
Its not like it was some accident, pretty clear this guy took a big risk
none of the news outlets did show the actual part where it crashed
its because theyd need 5 minutes of disclaimers to tell people not to try this at home
But is always the same tbh, the corona virus game at steam I mean the people don't know where set the limits on jokes or have 0 empty, what reminds me of every single person on Tinder and alike networks sexy alike posing in the ww2 monument to the dead people from the concentration camps
Its how people cope with things, some jokes are definitely in bad taste but there is no obligation to find them funny
yeah set no limits and do these things today is called open minded
I just have very little sympathy for idiots who put themselves in massive risk situations. It can be tragic when things go wrong but this one in particular I never thought would go right, Im surprised he was even able to get a permit to launch.
Not that he really got high enough to need a permit
I wonder even he'd even test fired it before
there comes the virus italy now
that was the testfire i guess
If you mean the rocket no, that was his third launch
It failed because they added a ladder ramp to let him get in and out easier but when it launched it clipped said ladder.
parachute canister got hit and deployed during the launch adding a massive drag that caused it to tumble and arc.
Thats a pretty critical failure, I woulda thought this sort of thing should be caught before you even begin to put a human in it
He’s no professional engineer, and he’s launching a home made steam powered rocket :p
Like I said he’s launched successfully before but they added the ladder and I guess didn’t pull it away during launch
Then again I dont expect a flat Earther to understand applied science
interesting none of the articles I read mentioned his other launches
then again expecting quality journalism...
Gotta choose good sources my dude :p
choose, riiight
I don’t know what you mean by that :p implying you can’t be selective in your media consumption?
Implying that I simply dont have time to know every media source on the planet
so I get what Im given from search results
Gotcha
Well in general I stick to NPR it AP news. When searching I generally do one of those names + event I’m looking for
I wonder if there was a back up parachute in that same cannister
They are generally factual and give more complete pic
darwin strikes again i see
I understood the design to have more than one canister but since the arc and tumbling it didn’t deploy? Maybe he didn’t react in time? It’s hard to tell with such a home-made device obv
yeah its basically a flying can of beans
It’s a grown up version of those water pressure rockets we did as kids basically lol
maybe he coulda made a car that runs on mouse traps
🤣
Im new to Discord so it will sound strange. How to add post to #looking-for-work ?
read the pinned message in that channel @tawny hollow
thank you @deep glen 🙂
I'm pretty sure Google's filter bubble is responsible for all the Flat Earthers on Earth
yup 😦
yeap, some expos got changed the dates...like half a year
@rare mauve this is the guy who wanted to prove earth is flat?
this is sad that he died
like mega disturbing
also everyone roasts him but he made rocket on his own so certainly hes not a stupid
maybe instead of building his deathtrap he should have focused on becoming a real astronaut and then he could have seen for himself
it's sad but I feel like he must have known this would happen someday using homemade rockets
could have also used a balloon, there are ones that easily reach sufficient height to prove to him the earth isn't flat
Well there are gamedev that made their rocket company
It's relative
Real astronauts dead back in the time in a dead trap made by the NASA
flat earthers have no arguments for a balloon ride?
No clue about that or an airplane travel
flat earthers don't trust airplanes, they think that the occupants can be tricked
I watched a video where they explained pac-man warping, when reaching the end of the plate
He was happy doing these things so whatever did what he wanted after all
there must be another weird explanation for planes or balloons
Yeah for airplanes and alike the lens of the glass
But for some reason in land don't have the same shape
I have crossed the Pacific Ocean 12 times already, so if the world is flat the seam must be the Atlantic Ocean.
Anybody crossed that ocean to confirm?
oh, this guy needed to fly 40,000 feets = 12 km to really convince himself
alright, Im out, reading 2 much bs on this topic already :/
Apparently it is farther to get from Australia to Africa than to get from New York to Beijing...
I do like teleporting.
Teleporting I can believe in. Gravity... not so much, that sounds a little Harry Potter magic to me.
that sun orbit change doesn't even make sense unless they believe the sun works like a spotlight and not an omni-directional light
that sun is working on flashlight logic 😆
Where are the elephants???
Must suck to live in South Africa, they don't get any sun.
Maybe the southern hemisphere has a totally different sun than us northerners.
Maybe it is the worlds oldest scam, trying to convince us we worship the same sun as them...
climate change is going to suck when it melts that ice wall and all our water falls off the edge
i don't think you understand the gravity of the situation
I feel like flat earthers probably don't believe in climate change either
the venn-diagram between the groups is just a circle
- a FLAT circle
any good/popular flat earth games?
there was a Cat Earth Society entry in the MegaJam
The Earth is actually flat in most games.
touché
Even a large open world like Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't take into account that the world is not on a flat plane.
This I don't quite understand... Are they saying there is more Earth out there? We should go?
Who wants to go to Thoth, The Moving Island, with me?
It's like minecraft, just need to generate new chunks
That terrain generation algo kinda sucks tbh
this could be an alternative Attack on Titans universe
Ok, this joke is getting old now. I'm going to go do something else with my life... Like cheeseburgers.
The Birds Aren't Real movement has been active since 1976. Once a preventative cause, our initial goal was to stop the genocide of real birds. Unfortunately this was unsuccessful, and the government has since replaced every living bird with robotic replicas. Now our movement's...
if you think flat earthers are weird
burgers == flat disk == flat earth == Illuminati confirmed
these people top that
I ate a bird once. It wasn't a robot.
thanks Luos for the cue, I'm going back to writing my flock algorithm :/
isnt that just the plot of Fallout 4?
Eating birds? I don't remember that in Fallout 4.
wow, who knew we've been feeding government surveillance devices this whole time
what who was going to check flat earth died on landing
@zinc matrix (long time no see hug) and yea, people are weird yo
"I go to check my flat earth theory is right so I build my own rocket ship" well "it isn't that hard right" those guys?
Just for clarity, it was a steam rocket. IMO still a crazy idea but less so than what most people think and there are plenty of people who do equally risky things
I think the flat earther stance was dumber than his risk taking 😛
it was basically a water rocket we bulit as kids using a 2L soda bottle, 0% chance of going to space
yup
He had launched 2-3 times before successfully. He modified his launch platform to include a ladder that ended up snagging a parachute canister on launch which caused the failure
well he was injured the 2/3 other times
hihi @deep glen 💜 yea I'm starting to poke my head around here more often again since work is slowing down and I have time for my UE4 project again 😄
uh @north torrent that draw is interesting o_O
@zinc matrix yes that's the idiot who thought he could prove earth was flat by building a ramshackle "rocket" and launching himself. Thank god he died, he could have survived paralyzed and cost society hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.
@rare mauve
I think he just was paranoid and thought everyone is lying to him. Or maybe he knew Earth is not flat and just was using that to become famous
Yea the latter makes sense too, pretend a crazy -> get known in whole world
Either way he certainly wasn't qualified to be doing what he was doing by any metric lol
should probably get FAA clearance and permits while you are at it
flat earthers don't believe in air traffic safety either i bet
@median wraith like the list mentioned: PC DX12 in Preview (for DirectX Raytracing)
it's functional, it's just slower than DX11 atm (which they are addressing on 2020.2 release
:S
olento im digging into dots multiplayer
but also creating my game in normal casual style (object based)
well one can't even play online games today, tells a guy that he should mark and team kill you....
and when i get ready, ill rewrite my game in dots multiplayer
though I may keep things like inventory object based...
I dont know honestly, my player has so many differnt children objectsthat have their own systemms... would it even be possible to recreate it in dots...
I can''t even begin to comprehend ECS
tru, no one can, we do it instictively
you don't just "add multiplayer later"
and definitely don't just add dots later on
both are things that will essentially require complete rewrite of your whole codebase
@stiff crystal i would rewrite. i knew that ofc
Roblox creator made more even do there 30% fee https://twitter.com/ballmatthew/status/1232066789292625920?s=21

@rich quiver one day everyone will be computer maniac
one day, you will clone yourself to do all the hard work, via genetic AI formed from stem cell based growths produced in a home 3d printer. Or at least that's what happened in my book "Tomorrow's World - A journey into speculation of how slavery will change in the future".
the clone uprising will take care of that real fast
raises a glass to Detroit: Become Human 2
@zinc matrix hello 😉
I knew it, you were a clone this whole time
@fathom wadi so you failed to make it big in gamedev industry now your writing books? 😮
whats next
sorry did someone shit in your cereal?
Usually I would over-react at this point and get all shouty and take you down a peg or two. But this is #lounge and its my home, so I will simply say this. You aren't funny and nobody here appreciates your trolling. I shall bow out of conversing with you now and its been several times you have done this. And people are aware of it. So enjoy the time you have left.
really?
it's quite sad really
in past you kept trolling to offtopic
but now one can see you doing that across actual programming channels too
like wtf dude:
(from Unity's #dots channel)
and yes, this nonsense is going on multiple discords now
times like these I wish I had taken mod role on these groups
thats like fake
I mean, with a nick like that it should be fairly obvious the intent
you really think people here are going to believe you over my word?
inspect tool is not new in 2020
So you won't mind tracking down the actual person who sent those 3 messages?
Ought to be easy
Or, if that was you, the unedited message?
unreal bought out skookum language
maybe it will be added as new scripting language to ue4.. its insane..
You. Is there any other chris here? (okay, there probably is)
...and why would you assume thats my name?
I don't know, why would I assume that Chris's name is Chris?
i would like to talk to him... if you portray him this good lol
Chris, why are you being so weird
since when Karol has been Chris?
After he changed his name to John and before he changed it again to Chris
its getting funnier and funnier.. but you both mistake me for someone lmao
ah I missed that stage
@zinc matrix there is no mistake chris lol
You're doing that thing again where you're disassociating hard
@solar nebula BRO i have no idea what are you saying
@zinc matrix you often say that lol
considering you even deny the very messages you just sent on other server (despite them being still there on the public channel), there's like nothing you can say that would make people believe otherwise
Chris tends to do that
yeah
it's pretty clear behavioral pattern here
@zinc matrix yes, you can't seek attention every time you're feeling disassociated though
It's when you go around thinking you're someone else and then you forget it happened
The thing you do sometimes
I think there are very different Chris' involved. The one I'm thinking of doesn't really disassociate, but is funnier
Yes, most Chris'es are funnier than this Chris
But you don't drown a puppy just because it was born with a sideways leg
tru
someone should make context aware discord mute feature with AI.. like if you've blocked user, it would also hide messages that are clearly been sent to respond to the blocked person and you could be blissfully unaware of all the nonsense that happened without actually blocking the people who fell into the bait
if they could pull that off, they could finally just hide the blocked message header
@stiff crystal my dear 0lento man... where that toxicity.. comes from... ouf...
instead it kind of just sits around being useless
They should make an AI that makes it seem like you're constantly abusing the blocked user, but only they can see it
And it slowly turns them crazy because nobody else is seeing those responses
My GF is already a daki, no AI could replicate that
those are here
ever considered if this is some ai bot experiment?
and it's just not very good yet
nice
why tho
is this becuz of Chris
i remembr the guy called Chris who showed his website skilljutsu and it looked like made in 1990 and he was wondering why he cant get a job after showing the website to employers.. lmao.. he still does that and still didnt get a job
@zinc matrix
You should be careful with what you post and about who you do.
You'll lose trust.
Fast.
I'm out.
that implied there were trust to begin with :p
@neon plume P. | Skilljutsu#1073 lmao sryy but he said ur name..
not that chris
and i remembered that story..
now we'll have Chris without P joining here and wondering why he got tagged
Maybe you're just bad at discord
Going quite well
The people who developed the trains came to play with them in our simulator
Awesome
gah Epic when I say keep me logged in I do mean it
there's one things that I hate doing it
it's that nvidia experience
it even having forced login is beyond stupid
but it not even remembering the login after half the updates is even worse
at some point I kept just resetting the nvidia account password each time because I could never remember it after using it once every 2 months to keep that thing happy
it has some nice things, like the built in video capture + framerate display
Hiding behind shadowplay is lame and OBS is as good when you tune it proper
of course every video capturing tool has those too
but I don't like tuning stuff like that
Yeah it’s super dumb they make it part of the experience
Ansel isn’t, games still prompt me for that
or at least, the whole tool was totally different
Yeah idk, life is easier without that nag
I do like the idea of highlight recording too
altho your game could just have replay mode that did that :p
Yeah, that login stuff just got to me too much. Won’t be installing it again
Do wonder if highlight recording is a thing obs can do or not
I doubt it, unless they implemented shadowplay api for it
Still think it’s messed up they make you sit through ads during driver updates lol
it's a thing you'd need to add support for manually
well, I'm totally fine with the ads there
when in past installed radeon drivers, there was some random installed on the computer along with them 😄
It uses the nvenc hardware the same way so I’d think a circular buffer could be a thing
they really installed some game along with the default driver installation
Horrible lol
this was like a decade ago
trying to google here in hope of finding which game it was but yeah, had to be careful to never let that thing install with "express" settings after that
Epic did it to me in 12hrs, it never keeps me logged in, the website is just as bad constantly logging me back in
also in other news... https://techxplore.com/news/2020-02-microsoft-defender-devices-android-ios.html
LOL
when was intellij's new game deve rider app coming out?
real devs use whatever they like
real builders only use wheelbarrows, fuck cranes and other modern mumbo jumbo
real lumberjacks use hand saws too, not wood cutting machines
we have this thing called a skills matrix, the more tools you can use the more value you are to the company and the less likely for someone to be able to replace you
Its never a bad idea to know more, to be able to use more IDEs, more engines, more stuff
I remember when I made a HTML editor with live preview, now there are plenty of them
Adobe and MS have the market
Issue with only knowing how to use one tool is if that tool gets replaced youre gone
because Javascript has been one of the most actively developed languages in recent times
I had the idea of release my modules for webdev mixed with one of these new awesome editors in js
but not sure if someone will find that useful or whatever
as need to be a custom build of the editor
lots of developers like to look at the languages themselves objectively but tend to forget to factor in the human component of the system
lots of humans know javascript, lots of coders at that so they develop their tools in what they know best. Has very little to do with the he said, she said
@pearl elk do you mean the language itself has been developed? like with swift that's up to version 5 now, I think?
Yeah the javascript we use today isnt the same as the initial release 24yrs ago
At the time C++ had kinda hit a point of stagnation too, it wasnt until some time after Javascript the C++ guys got together and decided the language needed to get official updates
Even then from C++03 to C++11 was still a fairly long wait where Javascript kept chugging along with the support of the web
These things tend to evolve more organically through community since its a human system first and a machine language second
Objectively it doesnt really matter which is best, just like political leaders 😛
huh, had no idea it was worked on... so that's why Tim Sweeney considered Javascript for Unreal as a bridge between Blueprints and C++ in a fairly recent tweet?
He did? I musta missed that one, he's typically been against Javascript because it lacks structure
javascript is used because there are tons of cheap frontend developers who only know javascript
Im actually surprised at how well these Javascript apps run, VS Code is certainly slicker than VS proper even if it does lack features
One of the things that turned me off C++ back in the day was VS6 it was chunky and slow and urrrrgh
yeah its not been great, only in the more recent versions its starting to really improve by a significant amount
a big problem with C++ is the fact that it still uses headers and dependency management is hell compared to modern languages
Yeah I really do love managed languages, makes things so much easier
doesn't really have anything to do with being managed 😛
Can still screw things up though, Ive killed the autogenerated files in C# plenty of times 😛
c++ modules can't get here sooner
then we can hopefully soonish stop doing the work that belongs to the compiler
Thats really the biggest issue with the language, you got all these waring factions on what they think is best for C++ where Javascript they seem to just get it done, whatever is most popular goes through instead of endless debates
imagine expecting c++ modules to be useful
😄
don't worry, they'll find ways to make it garbage
Debate is great but theres a point at which it becomes counter-productive but they are too busy analyzing the language to have some introspection to the human aspect
they do have a ton of things to consider though
Yes some but there are people who like to throw what ifs from the 1980s in there just to screw everyone over
Its like duder, no one does that anymore, just chillax and eat some cake
Thats why Javascript surged ahead, less considerations especially in regards to legacy support. But now days they have abit more of that but still, theyre not afraid to break things cuz no one is using IE4 or whatever anymore
but what if someone is using a Borland compiler from 1982, C++20 still needs to work
oh the irony of posting a comment like that on Discord
well it's different really, C++ that throws away backwards compatibility would cause coders to flee to other languages, but how can you not use Javascript for that it does? there is no other option existing in browsers 🙂
well WASM maybe but it's rather limited, communication with the DOM isn't there
yes well Im not sure of a comparable language to Javascript, could be another reason why its so prevalent
MS tried to make alternatives, Jscript was a thing and there is Typescript now but thats just a fancy name for stricter Javascript, I suppose there was ActionScript that caught on for alittle while but none have the same stick.
Do bad languages actually have that same stick? In terms of religion the older ones are the most prominent so it wouldnt be people just doing things the way theyve always been done. People could be swayed to believe in a system thats not as good I suppose as thats the argument against OOP but I just doubt Javascript has a following akin to zealots, Im willing to bet theres alot of high level programmers with their hands in the language.
oh god.... that discussion on an unreal discord ;)
Im being entirely impersonal though, I got no vested interest'
this will end no good <run>

So I woke up and I see I missed good talk about languages.
a big problem with C++ is the fact that it still uses headers and dependency management is hell compared to modern languages
@fluid bloom There is no dependency management in C++, period 😄

Hi Im Mons and Im a user
Ive been using Unreal Engine for quite awhile now, theres just something about it that makes it hard to put down. Ive tried, even an intervention by my family was unsuccessful so I come here in hope to find help among my fellow users
Hello, I'm FoxFX. Used game engines Gamemaker Studio 2 alot and I have dabbled on Godot and Unity. I am interested in Unreal Engine as my go to 3D Game engine, and I heard it uses C++ which I want to master in most.
Hello. I'm me and also a user. I'm not quite as sarcastic as Mons.
Good day. I am a user of sorts too. I was and Is. And I am likely to be as sarcastic as Mons.
I understand I guess
I just wanted to know of any specific difficulties for making Unreal Games in C++, like threading, structs, pointers
Never trust lounge. I heard they like popcorn dipped in hot sauce
Oh, these backstabbing loungers...
alright, well thanks anyway
Best ask in #ue4-general or #cpp @agile glen
and before someone really grumpy comes along #old-rules & #more-resources
Never trust lounge.
Trust that.
Awww.... you said the d word.
well I'm only talking about color of course
damn, not making it better...
uuuhhh... of their clothes, I mean!

Mercedes driver ran through a crowd and injured 60 people
Mercedes driver? bet he didn't signal either
nah that's the BMW drivers
Theyre only saying it was a 29 yr old man
Mercedes just assumes they have right of way
well have you heard of Mr Mercedes by Stephen King?
29? that can't be right. that's way too young for a Mercedes
Wouldnt a Nazi drive a VW?
another one? we had one like what? last week? who shot up a bunch of immigrants :/
I wonder if this is related somehow
doesnt say its politically motivated, they drove through a carnival in their home town
must be a party pooper 😦 also the headline of an article says he looked pretty much dead inside. maybe someon with depression who was jealous of people having fun?
but anyways Mr Mercedes book is about a serial killer who drives through a jobs fair in a stolen Merc
huh
Really hope people arnt being inspired by books on the macabre
nah they'll blame video games, like always
nah, this time it's UE4 f&ck shader compiler!
oh wow it's not entirely clear, but his neighbor saw him getting into his car and apparently he looked like he was drugged and said "I'll be in the news soon" before driving off 🤔
yeah sounds intentional, he swerved past police barriers
according to what Im reading witnesses said he targeted children but no one is dead thankfully
this is where I liked to use medical terminology, fucked in the head
well he got a 3 year old child though, but yeah hopefully they all pull through
pretty traumatic Id imagine seeing people fly like bowling pins
I'd have thought he be better driving through, rather than running himself.
Bloody hellfire! Answerhub is back... when dat appen?

soon epic is gonna be alone at gdc
whos not going now?
everyone
Unity now gives away more stuff and the dark skin to students. Unity does this only for valid students and not people who want to learn. now sad 😦
Sony, Facebook, Kojima, EA are confirmed big names not going to be at GDC. They said about 10 of the 550 companies have pulled out
no people from china which is a bummer 😦

yes
About the china people, yeah here happened the same actually the event of mobiles was totally canceled
I only cared about getting access to the learn premium stuff. Wanted to play with the web based unity client

well spent the whole day trying to have a parameter input in the builds of UE4 packaging but no luck, will need to edit the target file each time I want to build it
wanted to difference from demo and normal build but....

Should i hire voice actors before animating?
@zinc matrix how are these two related
If you have the game script, surely you already have all the dialog and scenes figured out so you can start doing both roughly in parallel 😛
You will need to have at least some test version of the dialogs to figure out timing if that's important to the scene
But if it's something like Skyrim, the animation stuff is quite separate from the dialog stuff
How will you make yourself younger between now-you and future-you when future-you stabs now-you?
no im going for a bendy and the ink machine vibe @solar nebula
when it comes to dialogue
Well, in any case, first you need to have the script and the storyboards
Yep
I looked up that thing on youtube and it has full scenes and dialogue that's integrated with the scene timing (aka characters are speaking it)
Which means it needs a script and a storyboard, winging such things will be awkward
First you figure out all the scenes in the game, the exact dialog and rough pacing without recording any lines or animating anything - then you record lines and animate stuff
It's going to be a pain to call back your voice actors because you realized you need different pacing in a scene
well this is a small project not a big one so im using unpaid actors
Well
not unpaid but im gonna pay them any rev i make
so unpaid
lol
That means you need script and storyboards really really realy badly
Like
How else are you going to convince your unpaid voice actors that what you're doing is serious and give them a sense that it's moving in some direction and not just going to be voice lines recorded and forgotten on the hard drive?
so i need to make a script file for every character in my game?
You need a script for your entire game
so all in one file?
It should contain all the dialog from your game and probably in the context of the scenes in your game
It doesn't matter that much how you format it, the important thing is the fact that you know every voice line that's going to be said and you have planned out every scene
Wait but if it contains ALL the dialogue, how will my VA know which one is theirs?
Have you even seen a script for a play or a movie?
It'll have the characters name before the dialog line 😛
oh yea im an idiot
For a videogame, you obviously need to only include the kinds of actions and movements and relationships that make sense for your animation style/for the technical capabilities etc
so even in games, you need action or int. or ext. in your script?
oh
i didnt see that message
my bad
You have to understand the purpose of the script - it's not a formality, it's something that helps you keep your shit together 😄
The script is part of an answer to the question "So what do we do exactly?"
I wanna voice a character, but i have a speech problem 😦
