I was saying the other day how I preferred their use of the bright lighting to how Marathon is doing it, just seems more hodge podge in Marathon but very deliberate in Mirrors Edge

the sequel even has a more interesting use of the colour, I didnt realise at first but as you climb higher the colours change

I do love the idea of a flow state or locked in as they call it these days, I wish more games took that into consideration

back when all shooters were super fast movement and simpler levels flow was at the forefront of almost every conversation on level design

yeah the physics arnt quite as good in Frostbite as they were in Unreal Engine, the second game is more refined but some people might not like that because it feels less indie more AAA

I can definitely see the benefits of Lumen, we used to have to render tiny previews in VRay back in the day

software lumen can look real bad though when its constantly readjusting, just noise everywhere

yeah its tricky because if you stand still and it clears up it looks great, if you do slow deliberate movement it looks better too but for faster paced it just ends up smeary. There are cases where it doesnt look so bad, Marvel Rivals uses it but I feel like that flatter sort of lighting lends itself to looking better where more contrasty lighting ends up looking worse which is why we see less games like that

I think one thing people ignore on the fidelity argument is while yes games can still look good there is a clear homogenisation of the titles which look good because they are playing to the strengths of the technologies they are built on. What we want is more diversity in the artform while also keeping the fidelity, plenty of darker games arnt really dark at all just toneally darker while still having most corners completely uniform in lighting with a hint of AO

I cant even list every dark ninja game lately which is basically your hero shooters with a darker palette instead of actual shadows

yeah I agree, it really wasnt made with GI in mind back then and now light just floods it and makes it seem less spooky. I can imagine the same happening in Quake or Unreal as well with some of the darker bits

Something that always confused me is why on earth Path Tracing is so expensive over Raytracing?
It is my understanding that Path Tracing is the reductionist version so if you can't afford full RT, you do path tracing which quantizes the rays where RT uses all rays. But it always seems the RT side performs way better in realtime.

I got a 1660 Super which plays Cyberpunk 2077 just fine, sure its not as pretty but we like to say how important gameplay is, modern indie releases just keep hammering the point home you dont need that level of tech.
