but in standard trek practice they developed a whole new form of FTL just for the show

It was not about the slowness, I'm fine with it (e.g. I enjoyed the vinland saga s2 beginning, or Shigurui). Shallowness more like it. I expect either something philosophical, artistical or actioniable or whatever. Didn't found anything for 1/3 of the show. Already checking out other anime btw.
