it's not enforced to use state machines. You can always keep track and handle animations manually as one-shots. But if you start getting into more complicated logic for switching animations, or situational transitions, you will wish you had used them. However I wouldn't use the older state machines anymore. I'd use the newer State Trees that have better functionality and focus more on the integration between state machines and behaviour trees.
