textures get a bad wrap but when you dont precache for weapons its all of the effects, visual, audio, it all gets streamed in and thats why it hitches on the first load only
its always on input too which makes it more noticable to users

You could load stuff on weapon spawn but then you run the risk of moving the hitch not actually correcting it. Which would be precaching the weapons in advance, in a spot where you have plenty of spare processor and drive
there seems to be a heavy focus on load/save system hitches which can definitely impact some games but Ive seen plenty where weapons hitch on first load

I don't think there's a competition between AAA and indies, per say. When the prices were more competitive, that might've been true, but I think AAA-crap games have nicely pigeon-holed themselves into the $50-70 category.
