FC6 is the best for me - I've played all of them and mods - FC5 I didn't enjoy and gave up on very quickly - the rest I've played over and over. The physics and hit mechanics aren't the best - don't move and shot and you should be fine, there's little tricks that help a lot too but I won't mention what they are.

inskip is 20x faster than light
which means earth to alpha centauri takes 73 DAYS
instead of only about 3 hours
normally you have to drop out of main FTL roughly between the asteroid belt and jupiter
and then at normal STL, it would be a 6 hour trip to earth
with inskip its about 20 minutes
few ships mount the inskip drives, because they are fairly mass intensive and aside from couriers or personal yachts no one needs to cut that time off
military craft however usually do have them because it significantly cuts down response time
