As for sports, yes, there are sports guns for shooting, I guess, but there are strict rules for when and where you can use them.

Sports in India doesn't receive much public support, outside of cricket, so shooting as a sport isn't that well developed.

We have Olympic shooters, but that isn't saying much. No one here cares for the Olympics. 😄

Self defense is only really valid if you're a private security firm at a nuclear reactor or something.
Other than that, you're heavily limited to only sport shooting or hunting, and there are lots of caliber restrictions and testing needed, and you've got to be considerate of those around you, so either fairly rural private land or ranges are the places you can shoot.
