Yeah that's what it used to mean. The "service" was actually intended for the benefit of the players.
Like with Halo 3. They weren't making any money on the file sharing system. It was just another "live / online" service that they maintained and operated for the players to have fun with. They didn't even have "the cloud" back then, the servers were in Bungie's office.
Now, it's along the lines you describe, A "game" constantly presenting you with opportunities to buy more stuff. Usually with heavily manipulated gameplay, designed not around the idea of player fun, but around the idea of player engagement, Fun is just the thing they can occasionally reward the player with.
This shit is cancer for the games industry. They literally have people whos entire job is making the player experience less fun or more stressful / pressured so they buy more stuff.

Map generator, 2d grid, adding differing heights/floor levels to cells using perlin noise. hmm.. doesnt seem to be affecting wall tiles at all... why.... Anyways this function goes thru each floor tile, checks if the immediate neighbours are walls, and if so should set it to the same height as the floor tile. But its not triggering... ever...

I have a breakpoint on the GetMutableCell line, and it doesnt ever trigger. atleast 25% of the tiles will have a wall next to it....GetCellData returns an int32 representing if its a wall, floor,etc. 1 is floor, 3 is wall

the bitmask function is this : bitmask = 1 * boolMap[0] + 2 * boolMap[1] + 4 * boolMap[2] + 8 * boolMap[3] + 16 * boolMap[4] + 32 * boolMap[5] + 64 * boolMap[6] + 128 * boolMap[7]; the boolmap populated yes/no by checking the tiles around it

Inspect your boolMap and its content in the debugger, or log it.
Then check the hex/bool view of your bitmask and see whether it behaves.

For whats relevant to my current issue is the number in the middle, and F0 or F1 which is floor level. well, thats what it does to generate the bitmask, it checks if a neighbouring cell is a higher floor. I think the issue lies in the generation of the heightmap code, it shouldnt make areas like that, the stairs should only be marked in single lines, not doubled up like that

I think the perlin noise put in the two cell wide area and the one marked 63 as floor 0, so when its marking stairs, it just checks if one of its direct neighbours are a higher floor. So in the noise gen I will have to loop thru and check if theres tiles like 63 there and correct it there

I'm just using const auto RawHeight = FMath::PerlinNoise2D(PerlinPosition); const auto NormalizedHeight = (RawHeight + 1.f) / 2.f; and then a if > .5 its floor1
once it "works" mostly, I will try and find a better perlin noise gen that gives more options
