They are not over-reacting, technically. The DLC allows players to set their difficulty by collecting those special shards or essences. The more of them you collect, the more damage boost and reduction you get, thereby making the DLC fall in line with the base game. There IS balancing to do and the DLC enemies do have longer combos and high damage, but it isn't unsurmountable.
The problem comes if you jump into the DLC blindly. Without the aforementioned shards/essences, the bosses and wildlife do indeed decimate you. Just like the base game, it's better to explore the new terrain instead of heading directly for the first boss. Also, the first boss is right in front of you, just like the Golden Knight on Horseback in the base game.
@zinc matrix I didn't. I have been dancing around with my axe, exploring left, right, and centre. I just defeated that massive giant-knight lying in the middle of that open field, in the starting area. Fun.

not like i am doing something revolutionary, this is a very slow approach. what im doing is basically taking the start point, making a hypothetical rubik's cube around it, calculate the positions of the 26 cubes, fire a line trace at each of those positions, if it doesnt hit check the distance of that point from the original point, do the same steps again from this new location, if it hits stop for that chain.

In my experience it is faster to use recursive loops through functions (In BLueprints) than the For Each Loop; by far. Like testing right now, it hitches with For Each; I had to alt tab. The function is apparently instant, only hitching a bit on int limit; which is still slow; but better than For Each Loop. Imma share SS of how I'm testing to see if I'm wrong though; happs I am doing smth wrong.

Bp start is placed into the scene and game is started. BP start calls event begin play which spawns one instance of Bp Boxfill. It then tells BP boxfill the identity of Bp start and tells it to spawn BP boxfill's neighbours.

Bp boxfill calculates its distance from Bp start, if its less than Max Distance, it calculates 26 positions relative to itself and then uses a for loop to draw line traces from its center to each position. If the line trace doesnt hit anything, it spawns a new instance of boxfill at that location, tells this new instance the identity of BP start, and then tells this new instance to re do step 2

well i realised even in best case scenarios, i was gonna make 26^(n-1) function calls where n is the depth. setting a grid size of 50, id get to 350 units of coverage before i hit 11 million calls
or was that 110 million calls
yeah thats a good point. problem is i just need a cleaner algorithm because a lot of the rays would just reach places that were already explored by other rays

im pretty sure over 80% of the rays are just doing absolutely nothing cause they are checking positions that were already checked
i actually had an idea that i was just starting to implement, basically id set the max grid size to something absurd like 5000 units. then id try to spawn something and see if it spawned. If not, i subdivide the box by 2 and try again. continue until atleast one instance has been spawned. Then i do a shallow search (2 or 3 depth) to find the exact volume that is empty. i then throw out everything until that point and then just take the max bounds and build an octree in that space
should be far more efficient than 11 million calls lmao

thing is, i am doing this to find the available space in a room in the ship. that room is denoted by a door (which is where the scan begins). If i can just find the largest line in can fit into the room emanating from the door, i can start using that axis and work my way from there. ofcourse there's plenty of edge cases (what if the room is very tall and not very wide etc) but this somewhat resolves the irregularity of scale and size

i did a test once where I was spawning a 3 axis box fill algo and used a mesh with multiple pieces adding upto around 150,000 tris per box. Each box was emissive lit with Lumen. I got around 10 iterations depth on a 1080ti/12700k/32gb ram before I decided I was viewing insanity.

what turned me off shader code really was it's iterative nature and the limits of getting data between multiple shaders and their internal types. Part of the reason I prefer doing gameplay coding than anything else is you only get sporadic moments of that between more fun coding things.

I remember the day matrices clicked for me. It was probably the biggest epiphany I had in coding since learning about OOP/Class structure. I had to see an animation of it in action to get it down in my head as the theory was twisting my mind. But shifting around visually made me realise how simple it was.

But, they did expand the story like it was a novel. It was nice, but I didn't feel too great that my hero was basically a demented psychopath at that point.

Now, with cinematics and camera-blood effects, you don't need it.
One good reason to include it would be for dialogues.

On a serious note: warehouses are your best friend in this game. They are the equivalent of bazaars and agoras from the Pharaoh and Zeus city-builder games, except that you also have to designate a separate market zone for them to set up shop.
Most logistical issues are solved with more warehouses.
On the other hand, you do have a diamond of dubious value.
