So basically i have restructured my ship internal registry into a sort of graph data structure. Earlier it was just the starter block (the thing that defined the start of the creation process) and then every other block childed to it in order of placement by player. This made it a lot more difficult to detect loose parts when deleting or moving sections. So i finally opted to go for a graph approach.

What im doing now is this, instead of just one fixed point, i.e starter block, im a adding multiple, in the form of what I'm calling "doors". Each of these doors represent the parent node of a graph. The graph is filled by a BFS approach where where a random adjacent block to the door is chosen as a starting point. The search extends only till a maximum of two layers (think two bricks thick wall) and completes when it has exhausted all eligible blocks (connected to a block that is also connected via a chain of blocks to the door and is a max of two layers deep). This is then done for all the doors that the user places and the door graphs are then connected to the starter block as sub graphs. The user is free to remove it add blocks at will, so creating islands and loose subgraphs is a possibility. If such a situation is detected, the player will not be allowed to exit the build mode. However the problem in running into is, how do i actually store the graph data structures? Right now I'm using lists with each entry have 3 data points to juggle, its relative distance from the door, the identity of the adjacent eligible blocks and a cost value that is used to determine the "connectedness" of the block. This is mostly to identify and prevent islands and loose sub graphs but this approach is quickly ballooning out of control with the number of doors the user adds. Im confused on how to better represent this information

Consider this though, a single block may be child to multiple parent doors. Each of the door is its own data structure but in the actual game, a block may be at a position where it is the wall between two rooms, or more. Each of those two room doors will contain an entry for that block and deleting that block might cause a disjunction in one tree but when looking at it from the perspective of the starter block, it might still be connected

If you're looking for it professionally it depends what sector you want. Mobile games tend to favour Unity.

One engine won't fit all in this regard. An engine is just a tool for a product, and not all engines fit all requirements. I reccomend reading my linked message, while it is 2D centric, it does point out other issues and positives with other engines.

I wouldn't choose either personally. Unreal is my only real choice for 3D projects as I find the tooling more suitable, the license more permissive and it more appropriate for large projects,

Between Godot and Unity in general, Unity has nice C# ability, but a lot of asset store reliance as there is lacking tooling. There's also shady business practices to be weary of. Godot is mainly good for smaller projects, it has the slowest gameplay scripting language out there (GDScript), and the main dev of it is highly opinionated and skips essential tooling for personal biased reasons. I wouldn't tackle anything large in it personally.

The real question I'd ask is how good your art, programming, and project management skills are. If you have solid art skills, you'll be fine making Paper 2D games in Unreal Engine too and having learnt UE for that, you'd find it easier to transition to 3D games. Vice versa applies here, too.

If your core art and programming skills aren't good, then just dabble in the three engines and see what strikes your fancy.

Ultimately, you can use any one of them, so long as you have the discipline to finish a project.

Generally stuff like this. He has a bad habit of not understanding other engines, and pretending he does, as well as just "hur dur I know more than you".
He's also reluctant to accept new feature PR's, as he wants people to use GDExtensions, which are essentially like plugins.

An example of tooling would be AI tools. Godot does not and never will have AI tooling because Reduz doesn't like it. No terrain tooling either, you'll have to build that yourself

terrain tools are whatever you make of it in each engine. In unreal, it would be the landscape tool, that has the ability to make terrain via sculpting or heightmap

I this should be the answer, but installing scons through pip on python3.10 just didn't give me an scons.exe, so I installed python3.8 and pip installed scons through that, and then it showed up in scripts! Maybe there is a bug with python3.10 but at least its solved. ---
