HM is the original. RF: HM was the RPG spin-off of it.
The latest HMs are 3D.
But, their immediate prequels are beautiful 2D games.
You can check the images on google, separate for HM and RF:HM and pick the game you want to play. The order is not important. The stories are all standalone.

There're some magic tools that substitute for sprinklers.
The entire field is pretty big, but yes, you plant each seed in a 1x1 square.
You also have field plots in the dungeons, and in other parts of the world map.
Ultimately, it becomes a stamina/energy management game. 😄 You can use magic stuff to automate things later.
This one is from Rune Factory 3.
2 and 3 are arguably the cutest and nicest to play, in terms of art and gameplay.
After that, they began experimenting more and more with 3D.
Oh, if you want a really good 3D-style donghua farming game, try Immortal Life on Steam.
The early parts of the game are more tutorial-ish, but the emphasis shifts more and more to farming after you get through the early-game.
It's like Harvest Moon, BUT the 3D graphics are much better. It's a Chinese game, with good English translations.
