Tried to play Black Desert Online once, and it just tells you nothing. You kill 10 enemies for a tutorial and then it's just like "have fun, by the way we're not going to tell you what any of the UI buttons are for". Couldn't deal with that.

oh thats a solved problem. i made 8 "control points" and then used those to create a volume. overlap in that volume selects stuff. then i am using the local axes of the block currently hit or the ship core axes, player's choice, to define the mirror axis. from there its a simple distance mirror. im thinking of adding something to control the exact final position for a little "off symmetry" if the player wishes

right now all of the blocks functionality are done. hulls give hp and bounce shells or get penetrated, armor does the bouncing better but is brittle, shields does, well, shielding. engines are what im most proud of, it uses linear programming to calculate the thrust of the ship in any given direction based on how the user place the thrusters. the thrusters actually have vectorized thrust enabled. the only problem is i need to put the damn thing together

In Unreal? Not too familar with the engine yet to translate the logic over from concept
In Unity I'd mirror a transform position based on one empty GameObject and try keep as little memory use as possible, opting for maths operations and variables for the smallest valid usable types (i.e. I can't imagine a user would need to exceed an Int16 for an offset, let alone a float value when we're adhereing to a grid). Offsets on XYZ for either both or just the mirrored copy would be Int16s for sure. The axis of mirroring would be an enum value (None, X, Y, Z, XY, XZ, YZ, XYZ) and I'd handle it dynamically over using extra memory on more game objects to track points

i could build a preset in editor yes, but it would still take the same amount of time. each block is a static mesh component, so adding and placing them in the correct manner and then exporting the data vs just doing it at runtime makes no difference really

oh that wouldnt work at all. the blocks placed are all childed to the parent "starship" which actually manages the controlling and functionality of the ship. besides my method is not that expensive, all you are doing is getting either the local basis vectors of the block or the ship as a whole and using it to implement the mirror

the blocks are just called blocks. the dont need to be blocky. i am using a mesh modeling software to create some prefab blocks and then there are tools for the user to use mesh boolean operations in runtime to create their own prefabs and inject it into the system. so you can create fully rounded ships. however there is no ray marching

yeah the parenting itself would be separate. I believe someone at my uni used a very similar method to the one I mentioned for their dungeon builder project with some decent success.
