It isn't a turd, though. Yes, the subscription system is just ridiculous, but the game itself is Fallout 4 online.

Eh, I disagree as someone that's put some fair time into it.
Never had issues with people trying to kill me. If someone attacks you and you don't attack back they do like 0 damage, and their damage is severely reduced if it's against a significantly lower level.
That is of course if you don't play the mode that explicitly states "PVP is always on".
The only other time people can get you is if you're an ass and destroy camps and rack up a bounty.
I agree trying it vanilla, but unfortunately they've made it so that it's really annoying to play past midgame without fallout first, because of the ammo box, scrap box, and stash space

Ah, they changed the PvP system from when I played. Way back when, there was no pvp flagging. The griefers could see you and kill you. The checkpoint where they fragged me was on that autumn-style road, with trees on either side and buildings on the horizon. There was an idiot wearing a MAGA-type vase-hat on his head who was particularly annoying.

There actually was the PvP flagging, but in an amazing Bethesda moment some of the weapons were so cracked the damage reduction didn't matter 😆
I was normally fine if I avoided train stations, but you'd still get the occasional asshole that liked to grief camps and stick around the newbie area.
In typical Bethesda fashion it took them quite a while to fix that one. In fact I think I stopped playing before they did, just got bored of the lack of world interaction. There was nothing to do once youve launched all the nukes.
Picked it back up after wastelanders for a little while, and it was much much better, but again got bored of grinding scrip and gold bars

Honestly, the art style has been quite disappointing to me. It feels flat, especially compared to the range of colours and lighting they used even in D1, but especially in D2. The lighting most importantly seems lacking, or just 'generic'.
D3, despite the more cartoon-y WoW style, had much better lighting. The byplay of light and dark areas along with god rays, was particularly captivating. In D2, the best moments I remember are exploring Tal Rasha's pyramids, with the golden god rays blended with very dark areas inside.

What I love about D4's online play is that any passer-by can help you out in any of the game's random world events.
There are mini-bosses and stuff that strangers can help you deal with and vice versa.
And USUALLY, that ends with a 'cheers', or 'thank you', and 'well done' gesture. Which is great.

I can't say I found the online play annoying, other than the disconnects.
There are world bosses that spawn and everyone on the server can gather to kill it. I think that's cool; kind of like Sword Art Online anime.
But yes, it definitely feels like a 'different' Diablo. Let's see if Act 3 and 4 change anything. I am still on Act 1 and 2 - yay for non-linearity.

You know, I had this feeling when I began to play the game, but I am fairly sure about it now.
I think Blizzard used different art teams for the dungeons and the overworld map.
In the dungeons, especially the main ones, you can see the Diablo-esque art in all its glory. There's lots of cool lighting with dark and bright blends, tons of gore, great atmosphere, etc. etc.
It's the overworld that feels off. I reckon the dudes who worked on it were either outsourced employees or just total newcomers to the D-world.

To make it even better, a slice that isn't empty looks like this &[0...10] so that more verbose version literally has no purpose
