You can use a render target (even just one) small resolution too, as a quick 2nd parse after an enemy is suspicious and get damn near pixel perfect detection for free

This approach is really good for horror, and it's effectively free, you can basically take your ray or sphere cast from the initial check and add it to a short render list for that check, everything black, player red -> red sum on the image on shader

If you actually want to learn about making your own engine though, use Godot

you can basically rewrite everything to your liking, which you can do in Unreal as well technically, but that will take miles more arbitrary knowledge

only thing ponki missed is a physics engine is effectively standard for a game engine now

if you understand the math to write your own render pipeline though, its almost all the same base formulas, lots of trig (w/ different optimizations for GPU and CPU use case depending on how resolute and performant you want the engine)

Even games that don't have any mechanical use for the physics engine in gameplay will have one for cosmetic things, cloth, particles, etc

Okay, so, first thing to know is that you can pick literally any country to start but there are only 5 starter countries that actually put you on a competitive footing at higher difficulties. You can start with Ethiopia if you want but in high difficulties you will lose unless you really know what you're doing

The starters are USA, Russia, EU, China and India. There's also Egypt but that start is harder. USA is obvious, you get a gigantic military and good research but the country at game start is in civil war, so you'll need to first fix USA, which will take a LONG time, unless you know what you're doing (this applies everywhere). USA also has the second biggest nuclear arsenal and managing control of the nuclear arsenal of the world is in your best interests, regardless of faction. Russia has the biggest nuke arsenal and a decent military. It is also the easiest of the starter countries to gain control of.

EU is an economic powerhouse and can generate a lot of science and eventually have a gigantic military, unfortunately you have to form the EU first. To do that you need control of france and hold control uninterrupted for 1 year. then you can start unifying the EU states, but that unification cannot start atleast until 2 years into the game. So this is a long and slow start, but arguably the most fun

China is very hard to break into, but has a decent nuke arsenal, amazing economy, a crapton of people and good gdp. Unfortunately it's science is abysmal and it'll take you a long time to fix that.

India has a decent gdp, a crapton of people and the highest population growth rate in the game. Coupled with the fact that the Indian economy grows very easily due to multiple core economic zones within the country, India within 2 years can outperform USA in gdp and science. Problem with India is, you have to build it up first and usually if you take India, you cannot control anything else because the country is so expensive to manage. Also the army is bad

Another key system is boost, which you need to go to space. Usa has a nice income, India has ok income, China starts with a space station already built, EU starts with a smattering of space programs in various stages of development. But the hands down winner is russia. Not russia specifically, but Kazakhstan. That country produces an ungodly amount of boost because of the baikonur cosmodrome

Early game, focus on boost and science. Or if you are playing as USA, spread freedom

And get to mars as fast as possible

You ideally want to secure jupiter orbit and establish the inner solar system as a complete safe zone for humanity

Whatever you do, do not start a war with another nuclear capable country. Unless you want chaos that is

There will also be a shortage of oil at some point in the game. Research nuclear power to avoid going back to the stone age when it happens

And as a final tip, you can always conquer the USA with cuba. Do it for the memes
