I think the underlying issue is the rising costs of hosting these sorts of things, that corporatism has heavily changed the internet from its more open younger years. While you can still host a server in your basement these days alot of servers are controlled by bigger companies in pro level data centres.
There are ways around making your API entirely pay though, there are plenty of APIs which offer pay as you go type models where you only pay per API call over a certain amount. This way smaller outfits dont get hit with the same cost as the heavy users
I think Reddit are being abit shit in their failure to recognise the value add these API users bring to the platform.

what was odd is that I actually started the compile in VS as Build Project after adding a USTRUCT to a class. But it triggered the live coding. Then the LC stalled. So I had to close everything down, start the compile with just VS running and it did 3k classes.

the best thing is, I prototyped it 4 times already. First time using Havok engine, then UE3, then UE4 and now UE5. I had to write some custom stuff to make the system work properly with UE4 and World Composition but then I got work so it was sidelined. Then by the time I could get back to it UE5 released and World Partition has made my ideas not just possible, but done way better than I developed previously with more options to do the things I planned.
