I can't rent. What happens is, I go check out a house, fill in the forms, they do a credit check, the credit check fails (I don't use credit and I have a default from 2015) so they refuse me.
I checked out 20+ houses all trying to get at least one place to rent regardless. I tried private landlords too. But they all came back with nope.

the problem is social housing. In the 1980's, Thatcher created the "Right to Buy" scheme that meant if you rented a council property for a certain length of time, you were entitled to purchase it. So people did because it was cheaper than regular housing. But the councils after that didn't keep up with replacing the social housing. So it's always been in a backlog. Then the private sector was filled with people soaking up the houses and trying to gentrify places so they wanted to keep out "the scum". Which meant anyone with debts, anyone on social security and families with large numbers of children or pets. So now it's always lagging behind the needs of the people.
the private landlords I spoke too all said we were too many for their house as there are 7 of us. I understand their reticence as where I live there are a lot of common folk with common issues and are considered undesirable tenants.
Myself though, we paid rent, in full, on time, for 10 years straight without fail. But the landlord wants to retire so that's that.

You have to understand. I am a family man. There is nothing more important to me than family. I work only for them. I give all my money to them. I have done everything I can to find a place for them. But circumstance as it is, the tide just wasn't turning.
My best bet now is to go to the hostel, get put on a high priority list for social housing, hopefully get a solid place higher up in the queue and get lucky with a council home. That or find 100k in a suitcase in the back of a taxi.

indeed. The worst part is this. The debt was incurred because of a bank error. The error caused me to get a ยฃ10 unauthorised overdraft charge on an account with no overdraft facility. So when I challenged it they removed the initial error but never removed the overdraft charge. Stubbornly I argued against it, then told them I wanted to close my account. They said it would cost ยฃ70 to close the account. I refused and threw my bank card at the guy and stormed out. That ยฃ10 debt accrued interest until it was a ยฃ730 debt and was then sold to a debt collection agency. The debt was supposed to be wiped off my record in 2022, but the debt collection agency used a loophole to extend it.
So ยฃ10 debt and my stubborn nature caused this.

In UE, iirc, it was kind of so-so working, a bit unstable.
