If we're talking about legit use cases, store info about players. For example for purchases which the dedicated server can then request from the database (or something in between) and see if person X actually owns whatever they claim they own. Skins for example.

But let's go a step further and say it's not a telecommunications provider, it's your gas company. Since these things are made by a small number of hardware providers and those instruction manuals are available publicly all one would have to do is log in and do whatever.
