You may not necessarily need to apply this to an entire system, this process rings true to more granular levels. Rewriting a function is the same idea.
Write the function badly the first time.
Understand what it needs to be doing.
Then come back to it and rewrite it with that knowledge of how it worked and how it didnt after seeing the result from its first iteration.
Over time, after having rewritten code time and time again, you will gradually write better code the first time around.
This is what experience is.

You just gotta do the duct tape approach if you want to get things done, you can go and fix them afterwards, but it never works correctly on the first try.

Its a long story but I thought I had ADHD and got some testing done that involved IQ tests. It aint that high hehe, but I don't think intelligence really matters here, and I mean IQs have been steadily going up since like the 50s but the effect seems to have leveled off (the Flynn Effect). So we're all smarter as a population anyway, and really your IQ just represents your score vs other people with 100 being the sort of middle point.

There's not really a hard distinction between "god rays" and "light shafts"
except that by implementation you're dealing with either a post process shader, translucent cards placed in level, or a raymarched fog shader.
