deep copper
#

they already use reference pics etc so if ai just brings the reference to them, yeah

foggy path
#

I don't really know, AI's are still effectively just combining and replicating

#

They aren't innovating anything brand new, you can't instruct it to perform precise changes to things, etc.

foggy path
#

There are just so many problems with AI's for anything else than rudimentary "first draft" art

#

not for a very long time is the thing

deep copper
foggy path
#

I've been in software for 20 years trust me I know something about tech advancing lol

deep copper
#

i didn't think i would see nanite lol

#

in gaming

foggy path
#

AI doesn't even understand what you mean when you say something, it's not even close to understanding what you mean

#

It just pattern matches the phrase to the patterns it has seen

#

so it's basically like a really elaborate jigsaw puzzle

deep copper
#

well it did draw grapes when blue man asked it so

foggy path
#

Yeah based on pattern matching, not understanding

deep copper
#

if you don't describe abstract stuff, it should work, which is generally how clients tell stuff to artists anyway right? because artists don't like to draw a lot only to be told "not what i want"

foggy path
#

It depends on what patterns it has seen more or less

deep copper
#

considering people also draw based on stuff they have experienced, yeah

foggy path
#

This is why they struggle doing things like "a photo of a man with an elephant head" because they don't have a pattern for it

#

however an artist who has seen a man and an elephant could do it just fine

deep copper
foggy path
#

(that specific phrase I used there could work, but it's composites like that which can be problematic for them depending on things)

deep copper
#

it gets confused when you write a para about it i think

broken sigil
deep copper
broken sigil
#

That's a very oversimplified explanation tho

deep copper
#

if i can tell it to draw a fanart of something, i believe that's when we can start getting the same person in different poses

#

but i do remember someone generating gandalf with some dude's head so

foggy path
#

actually this conversation reminds me

#

the advent of photography

#

guess what happened back then?

#

outrage about how it would destroy artists

#

:P

deep copper
#

it kinda did, now kings don't need them to draw portraits that glorify them

foggy path
#

today's kings are so cheap they wouldn't even if they had to

#

how many statues have today's kinds erected of themselves

#

or how many songs of praise

#

:D

deep copper
#

xD like they have the time to sit in front of people in the same pose for hours

foggy path
#

I thought about ordering an oil painting in a communist propaganda style of myself

i wonder if it can draw communism stuff

gusty star
#

Idk in the same way that some goods are now hand crafted and luxury just makes me think that human-made art will always have a niche

#

but I am also an Artist™️ and am probably biased

#

also AI art can't account for things you didn't think of in your prompt

deep copper
broken sigil
gusty star
#

and atleast half of the design process is brainstorming

deep copper
gusty star
deep copper

deep copper

why are there no AIs for other lame jobs

gusty star
deep copper
#

the first time i got here i talked with luqtas and strivvy, now that i think about it, that was a really odd combination of people

deep copper
#

or so you would think! but that's not the case ! yet

gusty star
#

Idk maybe the AI will take over art, when they can draw like Moebius or Kim Jung Gi, or Austin Briggs, or one of the countless others that are top of their class in drawing and rendering

cursive crypt
#

^ Find another room, dying from cringe here.

gusty star
#

ye

deep copper
#

but even 25% means a lot will be replaced

#

because there are tons of low tier artists

gusty star
#

yeah

deep copper
#

my worry is that people will stop honing (?) there skills

#

their*

gusty star
#

but apparently what passed for concept art in the 90s is a far cry from what we have now (it used to be really bad lol)

#

nah

#

people will compete with one another, for bragging rights, contracts, etc

deep copper
#

but without getting paid, for how long?

#

they will probably need a side job

#

which most artists probably already do

gusty star
#

Even if you can outsource some of the grind-y grunt work to the AI, theres probably still demand for artists and designers.

#

The entertainment industry (film and games) is pretty big

deep copper
#

i think artists will just buy the subscription and offer to use it with their work

gusty star
#

art directors and all that

deep copper
#

because tbh, who needs a full blown subscriptions and learn how to use ai for 1-2 pics

gusty star
#

ye i suppose eh

deep copper
#

it would take up a generation atleast

#

to fully shift, and that's if artists stop coming up with stuff good enough to challenge the ai of that time

deep copper
#

that might wipe the ai off if it ever comes to be true

foggy path
#

I think that's even further away than AI that doesn't have the limitations of what we have today lol

#

We don't even have a full understanding of how the brain works

deep copper
#

true, that would probably take way too long

#

and it uses human combo so that means costly reasearch and danger and worry

gusty star
#

hmmm

foggy path
#

They should just make cloning legal and grow clones of people in vats for research. You're technically not killing anyone! alex

gusty star
#

I always dreamed of a machine able to read your minds eye and like inscribe it onto paper or print it lol

deep copper
#

or did they?

foggy path
#

Not to anyone's knowledge at least

deep copper
gusty star
#

but ye idk, AI can generate images, but it displays no where near the mastery that a human can

deep copper
#

i often see animators talk about how they have a limited time to make stuff, it's such a gloomy world

gusty star
#

deep copper
#

if*

gusty star
#

We'll see haha

#

the human body is v complex

deep copper
#

but yes, form is one of its weakest points so far

gusty star
#

ye

#

its good at textural effects tho

deep copper
#

and i doubt they can just teach it anatomy easily

gusty star
#

ye

deep copper
#

it has to make scenes etc anyway

#

and then there's stylisation of anatomy

gusty star
#

yep, or art style itself

#

which is often just a set of arbitrary visual effects and flourishes

foggy path
#

That's the thing again with the AI's

#

They don't understand what something is

deep copper
foggy path
#

Therefore you can't "teach it anatomy"

gusty star
#

ye cuz it has no concept of anatomy, let alone bone, or even the letter B

foggy path
#

Yeah

deep copper
#

it gotta get more human before it draws well lol

foggy path
#

If you show it a sufficient number of different images of humans in various poses and with different muscular structures and body shapes, it will be able to produce reasonable facsimiles

gusty star
#

has anyone ever wrote like a thoughtProcess.exe?

deep copper
#

there was a sophia bot right

gusty star
#

or tried to model the mind programatically

deep copper
#

what happened to that

gusty star
#

like i guess theres bots but

foggy path
#

There's actually a trick to detect deepfaked videos as well relating to this

gusty star
#

hmm

deep copper
foggy path
#

There are tools that can do a live deepfake of someone's face, for example for a webcam

#

You only have to ask them to turn their face to completely sideways

#

and the deepfake always fails at that point :P

gusty star
#

weird

deep copper
#

yeah that sounds like those face filters on social media stuff

foggy path
#

Yeah it doesn't have sufficient data to extrapolate what the side view looks like

#

and depending on the shape of the "host" head it's being shown on top of, it doesn't have enough data to extrapolate the background

gusty star
#

ye

deep copper
#

guess no one wants to see people from side

gusty star
#

well some people suck at the 3d rotation task

#

but most people can do it lol

deep copper
#

deepfake is a weird world anyway, that's some borderline identity theft lol

gusty star
#

ye

deep copper
#

but hey it should help stunt doubles

gusty star
#

just imagine if it was made cheap and ez

#

This?

It does make me wonder if the human mind could in theory be modeled on a computer or not

bleak remnant
#

One more step towards morphing into other animals 😈

foggy path
#

I think the answer may be no, at least not with a regular turing machine

#

I've been reading a book on the topic recently from Roger Penrose "Emperor's New Mind" who argues it seems plausible there is quantum phenomena or something that exists between quantum and regular physics that is missing which is what brings together the consciousness

#

I don't know if I agree with all the points but it's interesting reading nevertheless

gusty star
foggy path
#

I recommend the book if the topic interests you

gusty star
#

cuz idk the machine learning approach is cool, but its making these mind-less generation algorithms. And like..

foggy path
#

There's a bunch of mathy stuff in the start which goes a bit over my head, but I learned something about set theory, gödels theorem and what have you even if I didn't fully get it lol

broken sigil
gusty star
broken sigil
#

The Tricky part is that there isn't a part in the brain that you can point at and say this is where consciousness comes form

Definitely feels like we are still missing something

gusty star
#

yeah eh

#

its like we can't see the forest for the trees

fleet tangle
#

We don't even know what consciousness is.

gusty star
#

or however that saying goes lol

#

ye exactly, philosophers debate its very nature all the time

fleet tangle
#

I don't think it's anything particularly hard. It's just a constant reaction to stimuli.

foggy path
#

I kinda grabbed it on a whim and it was more interesting than I thought lol

gusty star
#

idk I kinda think the mind is just emergent complexity but I don't have a well developed framework to explain the idea lol

fleet tangle
#

Indeed.

gusty star
#

consciousness is sort of the "ghost in the machine" of the brain lol

foggy path
#

It's sometimes a bit hard to judge these types of books because there's always people who say it's bad because they don't agree with it or whatever, same with stuff from Michio Kaku which as far as I can tell is actually still quite good even if people complain about it

broken sigil

Considering we live in a reality where time dilation is a real thing

I wouldn't be surprised if consciousness exists thanks to some crazy effect we still don't know know about

Time dilation is completely nuts if you think about it

foggy path
#

I think it's somewhat understandable for early MS folks, it was a different time back then and it was definitely more exciting and groundbreaking work

gusty star
#

I bet Bill is super charismatic too or something

#

there has to be something like that

fleet tangle
#

What's so nuts about time dilation?

#

I keep saying "dial-ation" Like a phone dial. Annoys the crap out of me.

gusty star
#

i say di-lation, shift the emphasis

fleet tangle
#

Yeah, that's what I say moments later!

gusty star
#

hehe

broken sigil
# fleet tangle What's so nuts about time dilation?

Like for example the scene from interstellar is what would actually happen in reality

If you go near a strong gravity field it distorts time, 10min for you could be 10 years for someone else watching you from a distance

To me that's crazy interesting
That's how we even detected black holes using gravitational waves

foggy path
#

I had a random thought once that if we consider time as a dimension similar to space (which seems to have at least some basis on real scientists saying so)... It would make sense that the time dimension was also expanding as they say space is... and that's why time passes

gusty star
#

its a bit of a tangent but I never get the chance to ask this, but has anyone read A Theory of Mathematical Communcation by Claude E Shannon? the paper itself i mean?

its crazy af that einstein wrote that paper at 25

deep copper

so you gotta go by reviews at start

foggy path
#

lol

gusty star
#

ye, college really tests you in reading and breaking down large tracts of information quickly lol

#

but idk, reading is a use it or lose it thing

#

i try to offset not reading books by going thru piles of hyperlinked articles

#

but it aint the same

#

(reading 50 pages ina sitting is use it or lose it i mean, you wont suddenly become illiterate ofc)

foggy path
#

I'd suggest getting an e-reader

deep copper
#

i have got to be one of the slowest readers here lol, i can listen someone read it i guess but that doesn't gives you time to stop and think "huh" like books

foggy path
#

I've been reading more books after I got one

#

even though I like having actual physical books

gusty star
#

maybe I should 🤔

#

part of the reason i don't read is cuz i like to read at night but I dont have a lamp near my bed lmao

#

kind of a dumb excuse

#

but an e-reader has a backlight right?

foggy path
#

E-ink devices have a front light

deep copper
#

sounds like a job for e reader!

gusty star
#

mm okay

foggy path
#

so it's a bit different but it effectively does the same job of illuminating the screen

gusty star
#

any models you can recommend?

foggy path
#

I have a Kobo Libra, I've liked it. Weighs only around 200 grams so it's easy to hold with one hand and the wider side with the buttons is well designed so you can easily hold it from there and use your thumb to go to the next page

deep copper
gusty star

and he used to be like "read it again, youll get more from it"

Yarp

#

Gravity isn't force, it's an incomplete observation. Time is an illusion. Quantum tunnelling is weird.

deep copper
#

should've paid more attention in physics class i guess 😔

broken sigil
#

I hated math but loved physics in school

mossy nexus
#

The gravity bit is one of these really odd things to try and explain, but super basically say you jump up, you don't fall down - the ground is actually moving towards you. What happens if two people jump on opposite sides of the world, surely that means people fall towards the ground because the world can't be moving in opposite directions, right? Well.. no. I'll admit this is where my understanding starts to break down, but I take the word of a few experts in the world who have explained it. It comes down to how we are all moving in spacetime, and that spacetime isn't anywhere near as flat and linier as we all observe.

Time as an illusion, can be demonstrated fairly easily by anyone. All you need is a torch/flashlight, a dark room, and a couple of people. One person has the torch and moves it slowly, say from their shoulders to the top of their head. The light appears to everyone to move slowly up and down. Now the person also moves slowly from side to side. From is point of view the light is moving exactly the same - up and down. But from the others point of view it's now moving diagonally up then diagonally down. So from the others point of view the same light moved a greater distance, than the man holding the torch.

Quantum Tunnelling, is weird. Very weird. If you had a beam of electrons fired forwards, and they hit a thing [the right sized thing] in the right circumstances they vanish when they hit it, and instantly appear on the other side of it. I mean instantly in the real terms of instantly, not just super fast.

Your welcome. I really enjoy trying to learn about such things. School was so goddamn boring and I was an under achiever at school. Wasn't until my final year when things made sense. Someone was teaching maths. Fractions.. and something they said, the way they explained it suddenly made sense. And very quickly everything else suddenly just clicked. Shame really, I got bad grades all the time at school, got made fun of because people thought I was dumb. I thought I was dumb. ye, I'll probably use fanatical from here on in

edgy ice
#

I'm still 50/50 with games planet

#

Not sure yet

#

Greenmangaming never has good sales so I barely use it

#

Fanatical's biggest issue is that they love to do bundles, so you're often wanting 1 game and forced to pick up 2 other games you don't want, which leaves me with a bunch of games to give away to friends but....

#

The price is still usually better then if it was just solo buy :U

hmm 🤔 makes sense eh

also the way you can tell G2A is sketchy - they accept bitcoin (bitpay) xD

I told the guy how to get across a bridge without falling off and he went off on one because I wouldn't let him auto follow me [I was in a rush and couldn't be bothered] I blocked him, and then I see a one sided convo between him and a couple of others.. who were giggling when they realised I had blocked him.. and he was told.. I can only imagine what he said after that because the others found it amusing enough though. That's the main reason I don't block anyone now. I am willing to read the complete and utter codswallop some people write, I'll simply choose not to engage if I don't like the convo. It's the only way you can make informed decisions about their nature, character. Communicating using just text is inherently prone errors, misunderstandings so while I do not engage I am willing to allow that not everyone is a delusional muppet and observe..... 😄

anyway ive at least made some progress in the sense that the code, before i touched it, does in fact not have the issue. its reassuring i guess that i can track down whats wrong

#

or rather that its definitely "my fault (TM)"

#

yeah im planning on bisecting but it will be expensive, builds are pretty slow in this codebase

#

still have some other checks and theories based on some reading im doing

#

@cursive crypt you asked whether i could allocate other classes and if they exhibited the same issue, the answer is: yes i can allocate other classes and it works fine. so its something specific to this particular rtc::Thread type

#

To sum it up, I get nullptr back from new() without memory issues, and without calling the null-allowed form of new, but no exception

#

and it only occurs in linux when compiled with GCC

#

in MSVC/windows , everything is fine

#

I do not believe so, but im under the impression that if I was, a memory allocation failure during new() would result in an abort. Is that right?

cursive crypt
#

Memory wipe. It's fine.

rapid hare
#

graceful sequoia
#

yeah and to complicate this, libwebrtc is compiled with clang and a custom libc++ that is in-tree

#

and the binding code that I've got links to that libwebrtc, but is compiled with GCC using -nostdlibinc and linking to that custom libc++

#

luckily libc++ mismatch causes link error in this situation

stdlibc++ uses std::*

libc++ (with the configuration ive got here) links to std::__1::*

#

I'm loving WebStorm

graceful sequoia
#

OK so, I debugged all the way through and everything is perfect right up until when the std::unique_ptr<rtc::Thread> is returned from rtc::Thread::Create() back to my code.

Up until that point, we have a valid, obviously heap-allocated pointer address 0x4792ca0.

As soon as the move constructor for the std::unique_ptr member variable accepts the std::unique_ptr rvalue though, things change

#

Long story short, you get this:

#
rtc::Thread::SetName (this=0x7fffffff5900, name=..., obj=0x0) at ../../download/src/rtc_base/thread.cc:759
759       RTC_DCHECK(!IsRunning());
(gdb)
trail wedge
#

well I'm doing node/typescript/react stuff

I stopped using php a while back but phpStorm was the last IDE I used for it

graceful sequoia
#

That is clearly a stack allocated address

#

I still do not know why this mismatch occurs

#

I tried looking into whether libwebrtc did some calling convention stuff

#

But it clearly does not

#

However

#

I said fuck it and just tried using the system libstdc++

#

and it worked

#

So, its clearly a problem with Google's in-tree libc++ or somehow libstdc++ is still involved in my own compilation units (outside of libwebrtc) or perhaps G++ has a bug when its own stdlib is not used

#

It's worth noting that though my debug session saw a stack address in there, I have also observed stupidly low numbers that look like non-pointer values

#

such as 0x80 or 0x1

#

Which really smells of some kind of calling interface mismatch or something weird

#

It's not (yet) clear why the original developer opted with using the in-tree libc++ for linux x64 builds (notably, for ARM64 builds it seemed like he opted not to)

#

libwebrtc can be built with the system c++ stdlib by using the gn arg use_custom_libcxx=false

#

I bet you it's some kind of move optimization which is implemented half in g++ and half in libstdc++

#

I couldn't find a quick easy to test entry point that didn't rely on move semantics the way std::unique_ptr does to test that theory though and I'm honestly happy to just have it working

zinc matrix
#

you have to do it for 'linux'

#

?

graceful sequoia
#

honestly given the fact that the app I'm building will most certainly use a ton of other native add-ons that are also written in c++, which will, of course, link in libstdc++ anyway, it's for the best -- why have two libc++s loaded in memory even if it does work correctly

#

anyway thanks for going on the journey with me folks, it was super reassuring that it wasn't an obvious mistake on my part

#

cue Laura snarkiness about Linux again 🙂

#

also Laura hope you're doing well, haven't been working on unreal lately so I've been MIA

#

I will underscore how absolutely atrocious the dev experience is with gdb and linux in general compared to VS.

#

That being said, VS' gdb support fell over immediately

#

I should say, linux-native debugging support

#

it was absolutely useless. The alternative was not useless, but was horrid (stepping through with gdb for like 30 thousand operations)

#

yeah i actually pinged you the other night when i first brought this issue here precisely because it looked like malloc returning nullptr and i thought that was pretty similar to the story you told me

#

turns out it was not the case though

#

oh man, im so pumped to actually do the next 1000 hours of dev for this project and not be blocked by this stupid crap
