I played around with a multithreaded sw renderer the other day, managed to pull very respectable framerates when just doing fullscreen shaders on it

though I used a OpenGL context/backbuffer and a texture that I blitted to it every frame, and updated the texture contents too from my sw renderer output .

and multithreaded so split it up by rows, so 14 threads all got like 40 rows each when doing 480p for example

260 FPS for 15 threads at 1080p, doublebuffered though (so cant read+write at same time). singlebuffered managed 211 FPS on 14 threads

I'd recommend OpenGL if you havent worked with a rendering API before. It's much (!!) easier to work it. Vulkan is about a summers worth of pain to get through before you can make something decent with it, and that might be even with prior experience of other API's

actually you could just do what I did for that quick experiment, and use SFML. It'll give you a window with an OpenGL context in just a few locs

also lets you use sfml classes to make a texture and blit it as well (just render it as a sprite)
