Guess who is likely producing something.

proud jay
#

no-one probably

fathom wadi
#

imagine though if something was produced that said "fuck gameplay" and required a credit card to complete the game. And they made it in the Diablo Universe. And made it a mobile only game before succumbing to pressure and releasing it for PC mastercard gamers to play along. And imagine Blizzard released it in all seriousness.

cursive crypt

I heard Diablo sells well. Makes money which is the most important. If ppl spend, then they like the game ๐Ÿค‘

I always had this controversial opinion that I want anyone to play my games no matter if they can afford it, and if they can't they have my permission to pirate it. A lot of people threw shade on me for that opinion but I remember being a poor kid who thrived on games for happiness and couldn't afford a new game most months. When I grew up I spent thousands on games and console and pcs. What goes around comes around I say.

cursive crypt
#

I know these times :/ So, I understand ๐Ÿ‘

mystic moth
#

The stance the Darkwood devs took was "don't go to a grey market store and we're good."

fathom wadi
#

We released a game once and it was pirated on a famous site. But they pirated the pre-release steam version and the game had a day 1 patch that fixed a bunch of vital stuff. So I did support on this famous piracy site for the game. People really appreciated it ๐Ÿ˜„

mystic moth
#

I think it depends, most of the games I used to play had a note included in the readme asking that if you were playing a pirated copy to consider supporting the devs down the line.

fathom wadi
#

yeah

mystic moth
#

At the end of the day you really have to acknowledge the fact that it's going to happen, there simply isn't a way to stop piracy so all you can really do is make sure your product is legitimately worth buying.

fathom wadi
#

I've bought every pirated game I enjoyed. I know that sounds awful that I pirated it in the first place but when the demo became a thing of the past I had to test games to know if I liked them or not. Of course this wasn't every game. You just know you're gonna enjoy some games and multiplayer games tend to get a buy if you are semi intested

mystic moth
#

That and make sure purchasing is actually a good accessible investment, there have absolutely been games that are objectively worse in their official release. I own American McGee's Scrapland but because it has Starforce I wouldn't put it within ten feet of my computer in a million years.

fathom wadi
#

does that even work anymore?

mystic moth
#

I'm not willing to find out.

#

I do know at least as far as some versions of Windows 7 and 8 it could corrupt your OS.

#

Raycevick mentions it in his video about Ubisoft's King Kong game.

fathom wadi
#

yeah I was never a fan of old DRM. The new DRM is just as bad tbh. Another advantage of piracy sometimes. Like Resident Evil Village had severe FPS issues with denuvo. The piracy scene ripped it and the fps issues were gone.

proud jay
#

tbh I think DRM is overrated from a developer standpoint

#

people that pirate your game are not likely to buy your game in the first place I think

slim atlas
mystic moth
#

I didn't play Village at launch so I wouldn't know, but it could very well be DirectX12 jank as well.

slim atlas
#

holy cow

proud jay
#

like if there was no crack, chances would be slim they play your game at all

slim atlas
#

what a morning

fathom wadi
#

it depends on the drm. For some time the Denuvo games were not being pirated for upto 6 months after release. That is guaranteed extra sales. Whether it was worth the cost/time/manpower I dunno

mystic moth
#

The patches for RE2 and RE7 dropped performance severely, and AFAIK Denuvo is still absent from both.

#

But generally speaking I tend to agree, at least of my level of development any interest on my game would be a positive paid or not. Someone playing my game and not buying it would be as harmful as looking at the page and not buying it. Same monetary difference really.

#

The only thing I absolutely am 100% on board with is prerelease DRM, I totally get it if developers want to make sure reviewers don't leak out a build before the game is even out. It's kind of a courtesy to your players to keep a story based game under lock and key before they can even touch it.

stiff crystal
#

@carmine frigate mona lisa example is bit off because copyright only protects the original piece from time the artist is alive and some predetermined amount of years from original authors death

#

how long that period is varies by the laws of the country afaik

#

wikipedia says it can be from 50 to 100 years

#

this is why you are free to use old audio recordings and pretty much most of the known classical music arrangements without paying anyone for it

gusty star
#

yeah public domain

#

tho disney has lobbied to extend copyright in the US significantly

stiff crystal
#

yeah, there were some works that concern disney characters recently that fell into PD

proud jay
#

yes micky mouse will enter the public domain in 2024

#

or maybe you're talking about winnie the pooh?

#

cause that one entered public domain, like the original one

gusty star
#

winnie the pooh did as well ye

#

yeah

proud jay
#

but the disney exact depiction is still protected

slim atlas
#

i got someone banned again lol

#

i am a hazard

carmine frigate
#

@stiff crystal yea most recordings of old songs in public domain are itself not public but belong to the person that played it

#

also you are allowed to make an imitation of a recent artwork aslong as you sign it yourself

proud jay
#

well imitation

#

not just copy paste

slim atlas
#

plagarism

proud jay
#

and it has to be different enough from the original

carmine frigate
#

well you are allowed to make it as close as possible

proud jay
#

that would still be infringing copyright afaik

#

if you make an exact copy, that's illegal

carmine frigate
#

no doesnt have to be diffrent

deep copper
#

i mean, many song lawsuits happen if they sound similar enough right?

stiff crystal
#

like if there's a recording of a symphony from last year, obviously you can't use it even if the original author of the symphony itself died 150 years ago

#

the whole music copyright thing is a complicated mess for newer content

proud jay
#

reproduction and derivative are covered by copyright

gusty star
#

ye

stiff crystal
#

like you can't really produce music anymore that doesn't have same melody as some previously made content so they have all kinds of rules on how long duration you can have for the same sounding part etc

proud jay
#

I would argue repainting a painting exactly is reproduction

gusty star
#

reproduction usually means mass production in this context iirc

proud jay
gusty star
#

Yeah like you could do a master study of it, for learning, but dont sell it ofc

proud jay
#

that's my point

gusty star
#

mb

proud jay
#

it has to be different enought to be considered yours before you can sell it

gusty star
#

yeah

#

US copyright defines that as:

Section 107 of the 1976 Copyright Act are four elements courts must consider when determining whether fair use is an adequate and applicable defense: (1) the purpose and character of the work, (2) the nature of the copyrighted work, (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

http://uspatentlaw.cn/en/what-is-the-difference-between-a-transformative-and-derivative-work-in-united-states-copyright-law/

stiff crystal
#

this is really weird one

#

because it makes very little sense

deep copper
#

so how do you exactly figure out what's okay and what's not?

proud jay
#

you let a judge decide

gusty star
#

its usually a copyright lawyers job

#

and judges haha

proud jay
#

that's why copyright is often times ignored if it's about small enough issues

deep glen
proud jay
#

now TradeMark is something else

#

that is fought all the time

stiff crystal
#

I really wish building copyrights were less strict

proud jay
#

because if you don't actively defend your Trademark you can lose it

stiff crystal
#

because it's silly that we can't like have known buildings on our games without permission but if we were to film a movie there, it would be fine

gusty star
#

ye

#

the film industry runs on some shaky economics tho lmao

stiff crystal
#

it's kinda case where it's just more of copyright laws not being up-to-date with modern world

proud jay
#

they also have to get permits often times though

stiff crystal
#

yeah there are some really famous structures

proud jay
#

like you can't just film a commercial product in the coliseum for example

stiff crystal
#

or that Jesus statue in brazil

deep copper
#

dietered <-- so how's the copyright work for this emoji

stiff crystal
#

that's been in many films tho but people have tried to prevent it

proud jay
#

it's my face

stiff crystal
#

bottom line is... if it's in the gray area, you just want to avoid it unless you have army of lawyers

proud jay
#

I don't have copyright on my face

carmine frigate
#

or if u just want to toss a hissyfit

gusty star
#

Don't tempt a hungry lion

proud jay
#

whoever made the emote would have the copyright

gusty star
#

original IP is more valuable anyway

proud jay
#

but it is using my likeness so I think I could get it taken down if I wanted

deep copper
carmine frigate
#

you do have copyright on ur face

gusty star
#

yeah dieter has to agree to having his likeness used

proud jay
#

copyright only applies to man-mad creative ventures

cursive crypt
#

So, we can get all these AI textures from the MP for free?

deep copper
#

okay so, mona lisa painting, if mona lisa wanted they could've taken the painting down, but the painter owns it otherwise

stiff crystal
#

there are laws on photography for people where you focus on their faces

gusty star
#

megapixel or w/e?

#

if you use it with UE yes, per the license terms

stiff crystal
#

like, you can't publicly photograph peoples faces only and share them

#

I mean without their permission

gusty star
#

yeah, but thats more about privacy

#

well

proud jay
#

yeah, but that's not copyright

stiff crystal
#

yeah it's not

gusty star
#

so wait

deep copper
#

okay so bodies are okay?

proud jay
#

the photographer always has copyright

gusty star
#

usually you can't be photographed in places with a reasonable expectation of privacy

#

but if you're in public...

proud jay
#

the picture could have privacy concerns though

carmine frigate
#

there was a commercial where they made some guy that looked like a famous footbal player wear the shirt with number of said player

gusty star
#

that doesn't add up with the copyright understanding?

stiff crystal
#

if the person in picture is not the main thing, it's generally considered ok

proud jay
#

it's like that one court case where a nature photographer was fighting for copyright over his picture with the monkey of the picture

carmine frigate
#

so other ppl might own the rights to a verry similar face

proud jay
#

because the monkey took the camera and actually made a selfie

#

I think the monkey actually won the case

deep copper
#

wait how did the monkey

#

apply for it

proud jay
deep copper
#

between 2011 and 2018...

#

long

gusty star
#

yeah legal battles ๐Ÿคท

proud jay
#

ok the photographer actually won

gusty star
#

but fo real tho

proud jay
#

but only because copyright only applies to man-made things

#

and monkey is not man

gusty star
#

come up with original Intellectual Property

#

document it early on

#

and then boom you're fine

deep copper
#

In a separate dispute, PETA tried to use the monkey selfies to establish a legal precedent that animals should be declared copyright holders.

#

does PETA not have anything better to do

gusty star
#

so the monkey can't hold copyright cuz monkeys/animals don't really have rights per se?

supple apex
deep copper

well, human rules should be guidelines for humans, monkey should make their own

we have copyrighted our laws for ourselves

deep copper

cold aspen
#

zero sum personal.
negative sum if you include others non crypto-miners

carmine frigate
#

ppl put a lot of energy into crypto... if no1 wants to buy there is nothing to take out

carmine frigate
#

also if ppl stop mining it.. its instantly worthless

cold aspen
#

yep. But people wanted the money when mining

#

isn't crypto a security thing?

#

I forgot what it does

carmine frigate
#

we will see this winter then power bill goes times 4... this does not make crypto more expensive... ppl like to link it to the cost to mine but this is far from true

foggy path
#

crypto usually refers to cryptography ("a security thing") or cryptocurrency (not a security thing lol)

#

although in the word cryptocurrency the word crypto refers to cryptography :P

carmine frigate
#

if europ stops mining the great firewall of china can take 51%

#

its not secure at all

cold aspen
#

Oh. I thought companies pay miners for using their GPU for security processing, through cryptocurrency

proud jay
#

that is more blockchain tech than crypto

#

but crypto uses blockchain

cold aspen
#

so crypto uses blockchain just to confirm currency/transaction process.

#

Nothing external... Just internal.

proud jay
#

it's decentralized

#

it's like everyone keeps a notebook with all transactions

carmine frigate
#

energy price went up a lot and crypto went down a lot

proud jay
#

and if you have a transaction and someone else doesn't, something must be wrong

#

that's why if you have 51% of the power of the blockchain you can do anything you want

carmine frigate
#

thats how linked it is to cost to mine... it isnt

#

cost to mine goes up.. price goes down.. less ppl mine... the chain gets unsecure

proud jay
#

elaborate

cursive crypt
#

Basically, which blockchain you are discussing?

proud jay
#

any PoW crypto blockchain

cursive crypt

#

I have a question, for those who don't mind chatting for a while

Why are gamedevs that work on fan games willing to work on a fan game for free and not with a team that would bring them extra capital?

I already have an answer, but I want to know if there are different opinions to this

fleet tangle
#

Maybe they are passionate about their game?

#

Maybe you aren't paying enough.

iron knoll
#

Okay, but let's say that the mechanics of the game you're working on is the same
But instead of fan game, they would be part of a team where they can build a world together

iron knoll
# fleet tangle Maybe you aren't paying enough.

Although I wouldn't be able to pay them right away, I would extend them a contract that states I will do so

And for the price we settle, and just to be clear, if would be the regular rate in the industry

fleet tangle
#

So yeah, you're asking a person making a passion project to work on your project pro bono with no guarantee of a return... you're not going to get people.

iron knoll
#

No no, not pro bono

fleet tangle
#

If you aren't paying them from day 1, it's working for free.

iron knoll
#

I was thinking more along the lines of paying them via crowdfunding

#

Or is that even worse?

#

๐Ÿ˜…

fleet tangle
#

You are not Star Citizen, you will not get 10 bajillion from crowd funding.

iron knoll
#

Hahahahahahahah

fleet tangle
#

And if you think you will, you need to hire people after getting the money.

fleet tangle
#

I'm just not motivated enough to work for free for somebody else.

#

Promise of payment or not.

#

To be honest, you sound like every other guy who has a game idea and wants people to make it for him for free.

iron knoll
#

What I'm saying is, I want to make sure that I have a team rwdyto start working after we've completed the funding

#

First of all

fleet tangle
#

It just isn't feasable unless you have a solid game idea, publisher contacts, etc.

iron knoll
#

Second of all, I want to know what their rate is before launching a campaign

fleet tangle
#

And a large pool of hobbyists who have no experience and will flake out after 2 months.

iron knoll
#

How do you guys propose I approach the subject?

fleet tangle
#

You need to secure funding or have a reasonable expectation of funding.

#

You have neither.

iron knoll
fleet tangle
#

Secure more funding than you need.

iron knoll
#

Before I can launch a campaign, I need to establish a budget

night grove
fleet tangle
#

If you want to secure good developers, expect ยฃ50-100k/year for 5+ years?

iron knoll
#

And to establish a budget, I need to know how each member is going to need

fleet tangle
#

What you need is to know how much a team member is going to cost based on current salaries.

night grove
#

It isn't just salaries though. Equipment, dev ops, taxes, and a whole lot of other overhead

fleet tangle
#

Then you advertise for that job and start interviewing people.

#

(once you have the other stuff, yeah.)

iron knoll
#

Would people like sign up bonuses?
Just for equipment and software?

fleet tangle
#

You can probably get away with a github project and a locally hosted perforce or something for not much money.

#

People would sign up and instantly leave if you didn't pay them - and keep their bonuses.

iron knoll
#

Okay, so:
-Get all legal business documents (Done)
-Get concept and timeframe (Done)
-Get the money (Pending)
-Get contracts (Done, edit based on team's requirements)

#

Anything missing?

fleet tangle
#

Contact publishers

#

Once you have a game design document and such.

night grove
#

Do you have a vertical slice demo?

iron knoll
#

Why would I need a publisher when we can publish it as a our own?
I guess you mean for marketing purposes, but besides that?

#

Kickstarter

fleet tangle
#

Publishers make a living for a reason.

night grove
#

I wouldn't work with or fund anyone that doesn't have either A) An incredibly compelling vertical slice or B) An incredible impressive history of titles worked on and shipped

iron knoll
#

I'm also in a line of angel investors, but I'm skeptical of their intentions

fleet tangle
#

Intentions are irrelevant if they give you money when you have none.

#

As long as they don't demand 90% of profits.

night grove
#

I'll be looking into investment funding myself soon. I'm a little skeptical of angel investors. I've heard of lots of project (game and non game) sabotaged by short term expectations of angel investors.

#

They most often want equity stake, which means their #1 interest is in the company getting sold to a bigger company ASAP

iron knoll
#

I want to thank all of you, and I really appreciate all of the advices you've provided

night grove
#

Friends and family may also be an option, though I'm skeptical of it

#

I've heard you want to divest your risk into OPM (other people's money) as soon as reasoanble for the project

fleet tangle
#

Friends and family aren't going to pay enough.

iron knoll
fleet tangle
#

And you don't want them to lose out if your project fails.

night grove
#

Don't forget the Epic Megagrant

iron knoll
#

Exactly

night grove
#

Ah

iron knoll
#

But I'm not sure I'll be able to apply for it

night grove
#

Some investors require that you've tapped friend / family before they will invest

night grove
#

I plan on applying lots of places when my vertical is done

iron knoll
#

That's the issue ๐Ÿ˜ช

night grove
#

Are there any good indie developer accelerator programs?

iron knoll
#

I know that I've had a word with you guys in the past

night grove
#

I've seen a few that are all about bringing foreign talent into their country

iron knoll
#

And I showed you my game, and talked about the issues we had when we released it a year ago

#

It's 70% done, that missing 30% is finishing the fighting mechanics

#

And updating the character models

#

Map is ready

night grove
#

Is it terrible I'm leaning towards using Manny in my vertical slice?

fleet tangle
#

Couldn't you use a cheapo model off the marketplace?

#

Just so it isn't so basic.

night grove
#

I've bought a lot of models already tbh

#

Maybe 20 different packs?

fleet tangle
#

Nice.

#

Don't buy terrible ones? ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Is the model something you are showing off ?

#

Then use manny?

#

If you have a character model selection or osmething, perhaps show off that system by changing models?

#

Oh were you the guy that showed the big monster moving through the city turning all the buildings into cubes?

deep copper
#

turn lyra into a destroyable apocalyptic scene

#

idk license don't listen to me

#

oh cool

fleet tangle
#

Does your replication system deal with replicated destroyed bits, or is it all dealt with locally? (just the buildings themselves are told to explode certain areas and the clients deal with the fallout)

iron knoll
#

So...
Let's say I need programmers to finish developing the fighting mechanics of the game

The gameplay is similar to that of Naruto Ninja Storm, Dragonball Kakarot, etc.

How should I narrow the numbers for the budget?
1 person is enough to work in that alone?

fleet tangle
#

I guess the bigger bits get replicated and when they're small enough, the client deals with it?

#

Ah right. Neat.

#

Nice.

#

Is it a sort of voxel approach?

that would be kinda weird to go through actually

gusty star

under the FAQ on eligibility:

We focus on individuals beyond high school with 0-3 years of formal working experience. Experience in either tech or gaming industries is preferred. This ranges from undergrad, grad student, PhD, and recent grads, as well as non-traditional higher education. We hire both current students and recent graduates within 1 year of their graduation.

i really don't like any education body that offers a degree of any sort, sure you got the degree but. yeah idk

gusty star

the govt. backing free student loans for everyone means Unis can raise tuition indefinitely, without any consideration for the overall economic enviroment. I'm sure in practice theres varyign amounts of actual fiscal management but some unis have def abused the situation

#

atleast in the US and Can

edgy ice

college in general is a scam, honestly. were it not for a paper that says "u no beeg dum dum", college offers very little that you cant get yourself

But I mean Cal Arts, RISD and a couple other high end design schools are all 50k USD/a year

and thats your competition -_-

deep copper
edgy ice

@deep copper its less "not told" and more that US education has become full meta where instead of teaching concepts and ideas, professors are just teaching exactly what should be expected on the final exam

and instead of giving room to practice what you learn or have a good grasp on the concept

gusty star
edgy ice

its just regurgitating memorized answers

edgy ice

but yea when it comes to modern day millitary stuff, its on a downward trend and most jobs are being phased out for machines and non-direct combat

from what i understand doing my research

the millitary is gonna phase out boot troops more and more and expand specialized jobs

gusty star
#

the real problem is autonomous weapons platforms

#

ie hunter-killer drones that act on their own

#

its approaching Metal Gear levels of insanity

edgy ice
#

well actually theres a BUNCH of studies being done recently(within the last 10 years) suggesting we are becoming less and less war-based people

gusty star
#

ye

edgy ice
#

i mean, look at the russian invasion

#

everybody disliked that

gusty star
#

francis fukuyama used to argue that war was dead cuz democracies don't start wars against one another

deep copper
fleet tangle
edgy ice
#

and countries are being very cautious about helping ukraine or stopping russia because we dont really want anymore war

#

deterrents or not

#

war is less and less on the table

#

it will be inevitable, i mean come on

#

as long as two men exist on this earth, someone is gonna want someone dead

gusty star
#

ye but cyber war and proxie wars still happen

#

russias backing al-assad in syria too iirc

deep copper
#

i was curious how internet would work with wars, but after watching the russia vs Ukraine internet blocking etc, it kinda made sense

gusty star
#

mostly denial of service and disruption

edgy ice
#

personally, my personal take

#

from what i know and what i have seen

gusty star
#

if you could hit another nations power grid? that'd be real bad

#

take them back 2 centuries

edgy ice
#

war in the next 50 years will become 90% cold, using service denials(corpos pulling out), assaults on their infrastructure, internet, etc etc

deep copper
#

so basically indirect suffering

gusty star
#

I wonder too at what point we'll see more PMCs like blackwater

edgy ice
#

its gonna be all cyber war and any hot battles will be mainly machine v machine with some humans in the way

#

either that OR

gusty star
#

since some corporations are literally bigger than countries in terms of economic size

and CEOs aren't known for ethics

gusty star

Mali

#

my message isn't sending

deep copper
gusty star

Idk some countries are just too small to deal with some problems, like insurgency, which the US military has trouble dealing with even

deep copper

i sometimes really feel bad for small countries

a single issue can turn them to post apocalyptic world

gusty star

and then imagine if those insurgents / bad actors were ex-CIA and black ops, on 300k a year pay roll plus hazard pay

PMCs ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

edgy ice

well insurgency is never going to be something you can solve

no matter how big you are.

gusty star

yeah fair

how do you fight an enemy you dont know is the enemy?

you cant reasonably kill everyone

Kill everyone

its kinda like the old issue with criminals and the police

i saw a video about covid vaccine being offered with incentive, and incentive was gun, like a few guns

edgy ice
#

but the best solution is to have better education and training, for all peoples who want to own a weapon.

#

and since a gun is a specialized tool, it should be treated as such

If only, I bet you that sort of regulation is on a state to state basis and wheres the money to regulate

Select the country with most individual armament:

2๏ธโƒฃ Micronesia
3๏ธโƒฃ Principality of Sealand
4๏ธโƒฃ USA

license, psychological reviews, criminal background check and a mandated semester of gun safety and handling

my personal belief

Japan did that and they still managed to get their old president assasinated

Abe Shinzo was very valueable for me ๐Ÿ˜”

Because of stupid cults

deep copper
#

that guy self made the gun, i mean, if he had the gun easily available maybe it would've happened earlier

#

tbf if you really want to kill, even a knife works, but guns just make things easier

It's totally not illegal to give yourself whatever title you want, as long as you don't use it for defrauding people.

random question, what is intel optane memory ui?

#

it's a 'startup app' on my pc i just noticed. can i disable it or should i keep it on?

empty sphinx
#

its some "make your pc faster" tech

#

dunno the ins and outs

#

but if your systems supports it, i guess windows at some point installed the drivers for it

#

dunno if its a bad thing/bloat to have

glacial finch
#

ahh thank you, guess i better leave it as it is for now just in case. xD

empty sphinx
#

is it a laptop by any chance?

glacial finch
#

no PC

#

*desktop

empty sphinx
#

cos usually default drivers wont come with a "UI"

#

assuming ui ib the optane memory ui means user interface....could mean anything

glacial finch
#

it was a custom built PC tbf.

empty sphinx
#

custom built as in? you chose the parts and a store built it?

#

i mean i cant really see it being a bad thing

glacial finch
#

yeah, i guess it's probably some thing that must be benefiting it. i've never noticed it before, just saw it and wondered what it might be.

empty sphinx
#

i dont even know what the requirements are for optane support. i did some research into it a long time ago and saw some quips about it on linus tech tips....but i remember nothing

#

so it cant have been important xd

#

from small portions of my memory, i recall it being not bad, useful, but not the amazing feat intel were marketing it as at the time
