Running isn't typically an option, and given the distribution of winds and hail within, trying to drive away is both hazardous and equally likely to put you in a worse spot.
as far as our birds, the ducks, chickens, and peacocks have a nice long run full of tree cover, a covered kennel on one side, a coop on the other, and often they just hide under the trees instead of under hard cover. The guineas that free-range could get under any number of structures, vehicles, or tables but fly up to roost in tree branches to ride it out.

The trees and terrain break up most strong low-lying winds except for some weak downbursts, and the terrain that leads to the turbulent mixing that allows them to form so readily keeps them from developing strongly until they're well past.
