As someone who experienced their first DJ set last night I’m surprised how well I handled it since I’m not used to being in big crowds

I think shows aren't as bad as other crowds because everyone's there for the same purpose creating a sort of collective vibe and point of focus so while it's still poppin there's much less chaos than something like a mall on black friday

I’m going to be real with you though the last half of the show I kinda wasn’t feeling the vibe as strong like at the beginning since I could tell some of the folks there were there to be there and not for Porter and some were actually being weird to me thinking I was someone else

yess this is absolutely true, when I saw him at escape with @red root it was still good but the vibe is massively different when you can tell 50%+ of the crowd isn't really there for porter since it's a festival

A little bit but I actually preferred where it was at for me, I feel like a lot of venues go too loud for the sake of being loud

One of the main reasons I hated Big Night Live last time I was there a few years ago was because it was basically just a big concrete room with terrible acoustics. The music was WAY too loud and it sounded like shit. Now it looks like they've got a lot more soft surfaces and the volume was actually at a more reasonable level. I didn't mind it, I was thankful to not have to use my earplugs lol

yes 100% that was my only complaint, some of those drops definitely needed more sub

it was even quieter during the openers than it was for porter, which was interesting

i also do want to point out that the speakers didn't sound overdriven, which i've experienced before in shows where the final output from FOH is too loud and the sound gets crunchy and distorted as a result

this one was a good volume and the sound was clear as a result

i agree with @sweet sky here, actually. sacrificing quality for volume is a common thing i see somewhat frequently that i don't particularly care for in live production

Honestly that was probably the most comfortable listening experience I've had at an edm or edm-adjacent show

Agreed. I wear ear plugs to basically every show I go to and the last several I’ve been to, despite having them in I feel like I’m still damaging my ears lol. I think especially for axxa and Porter’s set the volume was perfect, you could feel the bass, the music was loud enough that the energy was there, but I wasn’t worrying about my hearing all night lol

Agreed. Give me enough volume that the energy is there, but like…not so much that it breaks my body or ruins the sound quality because you’re over driving your equipment

I still wore earplugs entirely out of habit plus my hearing already kinda sucks as a result of bad production and no earplugs before, but I left that venue completely fine in terms of my hearing

(My voice, on the other hand…I was cursed with 24 hours of sore throat yesterday specifically, but I’m on the mend already)

oh thats sick! I use loops, the fit isn’t perfect but for premade “transparent” ear plugs they fit and work great!

Yep I used eargasm and loops before and obviously spending 30-40 bucks on those is way more appealing than 200+ on custom ones, but it’s been worth it as a “want not a need” purchase with all those shows I like to go to. Would totally recommend

For sure! I just got my Loops in 2025 (for Porter’s chicago show actually) after years of either using foam ones or none, was my first tip into nicer ear plugs and would definitely be interested in investing in customs someday! Thanks for the rec

i have both earpeace plugs and loops and the loops were perfect for the boston show. i like having two different pairs to switch it up so i'm not putting the same things in my ears all the time, plus when i go to multi-day things, i like bringing both in case i lose a pair or something. when i went to escape, i had the loops attached to one of the straps of my hydropack and the earpeace plugs in the bag itself in case the loops fell off my bag or the case for them broke or something

i probably would've been fine if i had lost my loops for boston, but still better to wear them whenever i can versus ruin my hearing since i need my ears for work (i've directed before when i've been sick to the point where my hearing starts to be impacted and it's the most miserable thing ever. i go from being a halfway director to being absolutely horrible lol)
