it's really hit or miss, on nye we showed up like an hour and a half before doors opened and got rail no problem, in Copenhagen I showed up two and a half hours before doors opened and wasnt even close because VIP had early entry

seeing nothing but the screens is totally possible and unfortunately there's really no good answer. if you're really short, your ability to see the stage usually relies on finding a spot you can see between two people, getting a spot on the barrier, or an elevated position. concerts are not the most friendly to us short ppl

Chicago big. Be prepared. I assume you're flying into the airport? Are you renting a vehicle or uber? If renting make sure you plan out parking in advance, I believe somewhere in this thread parking near the venue was discussed.
If you're here for longer than a day, please do take the time to sight see. There's so much to do in the city. There's boat tours, there's navy pier, so many museums (my personal favorite is the field museum), parks, DA BEAN, zoos

Chicago does have plenty of public transportation as well, busses and the trains, but I'm not familiar with those because I usually just drive into Chicago and park somewhere for the day

And ofc I'd recommend finding some good Chicago style pizza

Id say ask the locals or check reddit for the best places for food because there's too many options

I also want to make sure you have all your paperwork figured out right now, especially with the weird erm, political climate here with people travelling to the US

Personally I've never seen a venue that doesn't allow lining up early, being a fellow short person I usually aim to be at the venue at least an hour before doors open, sometimes even two hours or more if the weather allows.

It really varies based on city, time, venue size, and if there's tickets that allow early access; for the NYC show I showed up late, like 20 minutes before porter went on, and got pretty close to the stage. For New Years, we showed up about an hour and a half before doors and got right on the barricade. In Copenhagen there was VIP early entry, I showed up 2 hours before doors with a GA ticket and wasn't even close to the barricade and couldn't see at all.

It honestly does, but one thing I learned that helps, is make sure you leave them in during the entirety of the opening act, because your ears will be a lot more used to it when the transition into Porter playing happens. Usually headlining acts get a little boost of volume in the mix, so it will be louder than the opening act. If you wait TIL Porter comes on to put them in, your ears and brain will notice the muffling a lot more lol

I have a set of EarPeace plugs from a VIP bag from a show I went to in 2023 and they've served me really well. They're relatively small and they're mostly clear in appearance, so after you put them in, you can just kinda leave 'em in and forget about 'em until the show ends (where you'll have to grab a little clear tab that's attached to the end of each of them and gently wiggle them out of your ears). I haven't noticed any obvious degradation in sound quality with them and you can also get different levels of cancelation filter with them if you buy them online that you can swap out yourself. They come in a relatively small metal tube that you store them in that has a keychain loop on it, so you can attach it to a keychain/lanyard or just drop in your pocket/bag with your phone/keys/wallet/porter robinson art prints/kandi/potaro plushie/"play 100% in the bitch" sign/etc

The risk is always there, but in a musicians discord like this you're almost exclusively talking to people who're relatively normal and you already share an interest with - the way I look at it is that most of the people you're talking to in meetup threads were going to go to the show anyway, and you're in a group with other people keeping an eye out.

Every Porter discord group I've been with has been awesome, looking out for each other, making sure ppl get back to their hotels safe, ready to throw hands with any ne'er-do-wells

Also PRD has been around for a while so a lot of people here have known each other and meet up before, etc

Smile Copenhagen: showed up 2.5 hours before doors and was 20 feet behind barricade in a venue way smaller than either NY shows

luckily there are a lot of tutorials on youtube for diff stitches and great pattern resources and pattern mock up resources. singlet bracelets are the easiest kind and ladder stitching is pretty easy ! im just now learning other stitches bc i started making more than singles like a day or two ago 😭 tho for me it’s more hard to afford the supplies esp in a hurry than learn something quickly

The first kind I ever learned to make was the x-base cuff! The best thing about it is that you can get bigger and bigger pretty easily the more comfortable you get with making it. I've been practicing for only like 3/4 months!

Hey everyone, unfortunately after multiple follow-ups with a lot of venues, I was mostly met with a lack of response or quotes that were way too high for what we’d be doing (not their fault of course), or in the case of the last venue I was in contact with, a weird last minute vague rental quote change and oddly rude communication, I’m going to have to say the pre-show is not going to be able to happen. If anyone happens to have any other leads, I’m happy to look into that, but I tried every avenue I could find to no success! Very discouraging as I wanted us to have something really fun and memorable to get amped up for seeing Porter, but I know we can still just gather up at a park or shop or something and hang out and have a great time! I’m really excited to see and meet you all!! ❤️

Side note though, my buddy is DJing a Shrek Rave on 5/9 at the House Of Blues in Chicago, and a few days ago invited me to spin for a bit, so if anyone in the area is interested in details for that, dm me lol, I’d love to see you!✌🏻❤️

Having been to a couple porter meetups, just getting everyone together is SUPER memorable, so I'm totally up for anything. I don't know this part of the city super well, so if anyone local has any suggestions for a good spot within a 10-15 walk from the venue I'm down to pick something and send it. For New Years we all met up at the cafeteria area in a Wegmans supermarket and it worked fine, anywhere people can gather, sit, and get a snack or drink nearby before the show works.

Wegmans worked great! Anywhere people can gather without having to buy something, but also being able to get a snack and drink before the show is really good. Realistically we just picked somewhere relatively close a local knew we could all go and fit, and it turned out to be a supermarket.

Most of us wanted to get barricade, so we met about 2 hours before we wanted to be in line, the people who didn't care about barricade followed up in a second group a bit later.

We probably had like 2 dozen people total

I’ve done semi big meetups at breweries in my area (central Iowa) and whenever we do these (usually 20+ people), we always call ahead and let them know we’re bringing a group, give them an approximate size, and an approximate time. The Goose Island place looks really cool, and a phone call the day before would definitely be helpful for them

I'm not totally against it, but I'm not sure if it's the best spot for a meetup. There's 160 people in this thread and while I doubt even 20% will meet up beforehand, that's a lot of people, and in my experience with meetups before shows usually less than half the people want to eat, and it's pretty pricy, too... I find it's usually best to pick a public space like a park or mall where there's no expectation of spending money and people can branch off and come back if they want food, drinks, etc.

People can always head there if they want to eat, too 🙂

i love the nature museum !! they have access to the butterfly haven almost at all times but if anyone from out of town visits please remember that it is both a taxidermy museum so if youre uncomfortable around that be careful (plus there are alarms for some of the taxidermy exhibits) and a lot of children and families go there, a lot of the features are almost overwhelmingly for young children so while i do highly encourage visiting even during outside events just please be mindful < 3

I saw TLG Live in both the 2023 and finale runs and I can 100% agree: life altering experience. I wish I had a better memory of the finale show I went to (tl;dr: not good things were happening back home), but the 2023 show I saw in KC was genuinely a top 5 most memorable moment of my life type experience

I’ve spent most of my life with EDM and I’ve enjoyed it from a decently young age, but every single time I go to a concert, I leave even more in love with EDM

I'm sorry you had bad things happening that invaded your headspace but yes, 100% a life altering show. I know it'll be a while, esp since they both have families, but I will absolutely be at a show when they tour again. Everything about it was incredible. Their artistry goes beyond just their music, and I just. No other show I've seen compares.

Check a local forecast about 48 hours out, either from a local NWS office or a local TV station. The amounts and locations are much more accurate once you get into the 48 hours or less range (source: I work in tv production and that’s what every single meteorologist I’ve ever worked with has said)

Hi y’all! Sooo I’m going to Chicago from Miami completely solo. I’m a lady and I’m 28…. I’ve flown/traveled to Europe on my own when I was 21… my family is freaking out about me going to Chicago alone for this show.

Is Chicago actually dangerous??? Are there things I can do to keep myself safe? I’m staying in a hostel that’s literally a 4 minute drive to the venue (20 min walk that I’m not doing lol)

I haven’t properly visited Chicago before (only the airport), but I used to live near and frequently visit Philadelphia, and have been to New York City many times. I understand the feeling of concern over your safety—I would say first and foremost, as a man, my experience regarding safety will be different than yours, and in general, if you can find someone to buddy up with (since a bunch of us plan to hang out before the show, hopefully that will be easy for you!), that would be best. But overall, most cities, even ‘dangerous’ ones, it depends on two factors: where in the city you are, and more importantly, how you carry yourself.

Don’t spend a lot of time looking at your phone like you’re trying to figure out where you are or how to get where you are going. Walking with confidence like you know the area will make you appear as a much less vulnerable target than someone who is lost and confused. The iPhone maps app has vibrations available for when you turn, so a lot of the time I’ll memorize the next few turns, and I’ll keep my phone in my hand in a jacket pocket or something, and you’ll feel when you are supposed to take your turn.

Beyond that, use common sense. You can usually pretty easily visually determine the general safety of an area based on the appearance of the buildings and other property upkeep. I wouldn’t recommend walking alone at night. Your hostel is incredibly close to the venue which is a huge plus. While I am not familiar with the neighborhoods to be in and which to generally avoid, the venue SEEMS to be in a nice location.

But best things to remember is that even if you end up in a shady spot, looking like you belong there is your best move.

As someone who's lived in both Miami and Chicago, as a small guy they felt pretty equivalent to me- honestly Miami felt a little worse, but that was 10 or so years ago. Jayzaw's advice is perfect, and LOTS of Chicago is extreeeemely nice. The buddy system is an idea I'm a big fan of, at NYE we had two groups that went out in different directions to make sure everyone got to their lodging safely so we can definitely do that in Chicago

I've been to Chicago multiple times now and generally speaking you'll be safe. Most times I've been with one other person even walking a few blocks at night, but I'll be honest in saying I'd be more scared of Miami lmao.
I'm also a 28 year old woman, I just avoid going anywhere not heavily trafficked by pedestrians at night and other than that I walked around Chicago in the daytime with no issues.
It helps if you literally look like you live there, I had earbuds in, RBF on while I was navigating, and had a backpack. So I looked like every other local commuting lol

I also walk super fast and just kept going between navigating and texting so it just looked like I was on the phone with someone

Admittedly this was around the mart and the bean which are both touristy areas
