I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y700-15ISK, with a GeForce GTX 960m, and Intel HD Graphics 530 (intel core i7 6700hq)
Recently (after installing forza horizon 4) i started experiencing problems with my 960M, mostly after shutting down my laptop, and turning it on the next day i get this error in device manager
first of all it says
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
then after disabling and enabling it i get this error EVERYTIME
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) A device which does not exist was specified.
Then, if i go update the driver and restart it works fine again
And if i go to sleep mode and wake it up the next day, theres a 50/50 chance for me to get a BSOD with this: VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR
Thanks for your answers!

-# Theres nothing more annoying than seeing this when you wanna play after turning on your laptop:

#

Also, i tried alot of NVIDIA driver versions (522.xx), 472.12, repasting and cleaning out the fans, upgrading/downgrading bios, reinstalling windows 2 times, but everytime this happens. so annoying.

#

I have a feeling, that the 960M started slowly dying after installing FH4 (might be a coincidence), and Fast Startup is turned off.

#

Then after manually going to update the driver, it shows this, and after the reboot it just says its working fine again until i leave it shut down, or sleeping for a longer period (about 6 hours, i don't really know.)

If you encounter Code 43 within the Device Status of your GPU in your Device manager, it means that your GPU has encountered a severe hardware issue and your GPU is dead. Code 43 is equivalent to a hardware failure such as the “Yellow Light Of Death” on the PS3 or “Red Ring Of Death” on the Xbox 360 and requires a GPU chip replacement.

If your GPU or laptop is still covered under warranty, please send the device for RMA/Warranty for a replacement. If your GPU or laptop is no longer covered under warranty, you will need to buy a new GPU or a new laptop.

Just get yourself a new laptop of desktop

#

an Intel iGPU has significantly better performance

and better game support

I understand Code 43 can indicate hardware failure, but in my case the GPU works normally under full load for hours (no artifacts, no crashes). The issue only appears after cold boot or sleep, and is temporarily fixed by driver reinstall. Doesn’t that point more toward a power state or initialization issue rather than a permanently failed GPU?
