#I Still Use A GTX 1070. Should I Still Be Updating My Drivers?

I'm someone who's still using a GTX 1070. I'm also still on Windows 10. Do I even bother updating to each and every newly released driver? To tell you the truth I don't even know what driver I'm currently on. I've always figured it doesn't make sense to update to a new driver if the driver isn't fixing issues with the games that I'm playing, and in all honesty I haven't seen a driver in the last 5+ years mention any of the games that I play.

Probably the last stable driver and perhaps the best for your 1070 since later drivers don't bring anything relevant to 10 series

Ok, so, I installed this driver, and after running games on it for a day I'm noticing I'm not steadily holding 60 FPS, or any FPS above 60 for that matter, compared to the driver I had previously, which upon removing that driver via DDU I had found out it was older than this one. For reference of games that I'm playing, I play older games: older Call of Duty games, older Halo games (MCC), older Battlefield games, Destiny 2, Fallout 76

Run 3DMark to confirm that it is functioning correctly or slower than expected. Given its age I'd also check HWINFO

HWINFO has two modes, Summary and Sensors. Normally, when asked, you'll want to use the Sensors-only mode to get the information that may be needed (e.g. temperatures, power usage, clock speeds.)

When opening HWINFO, make sure to tick "Sensors-only" so that it does not open the summary display first. Then click Start.

On some hardware, HWINFO may ask if you want to monitor them or not, as there may be some potential conflicts if they were monitored. Usually these aren't important enough to matter if it's being monitored or not.

Once HWINFO's sensor status window open, look for the relevant sections and screenshot them. If you're unsure, screenshot the entire thing. This window is scrollable, so you'll need to scroll and take multiple screenshots.

If you know what you're doing, these are the items you'll probably need (names may vary; below are samples from Intel CPUs; some items may not exist for your particular system):

  • Core VIDs
  • CPU Package Temperature
  • Core Thermal Throttling
  • Package/Ring Thermal Throttling
  • CPU Package Power
  • PL1 Power Limit (Static)
  • PL2 Power Limit (Static)
  • MOS
  • VR VOUT
  • +12V
  • Vcore
  • CPU Fan
  • Pump Fan
  • GPU Temperature
  • GPU Hot-spot
  • GPU Core Clock
  • GPU Power
  • GPU +12V
  • GPU Fan
  • GPU Performance Limit Reasons
  • Windows Hardware Errors (WHEA)

Have HWINFO open in the background, then run 3DMark once. Send in the values and the 3DMark result as screenshots here.

Alright, here are the screenshots. Hopefully I did this right. I'm hoping you meant to run "Steel Nomad" in 3DMark because that's all that I could run in the free version and I'm really not about to buy the whole package.

it's even performing above average

#

I'd check settings and things like that. Also consider if any usage habits changed (additional monitors, background apps)

Weird. Games feel a bit choppy since going on this driver. When I game I usually only ever have the game open, or occasionally I'll open a browser to look something up but then I close it. Would there be another driver you could recommend just so I could see what the performance is like compared to this one?

This might be the last "GRD" driver for the 10 series

#

before it goes into extended support/legacy

I used the nvidia app to download game ready driver ver: 581.80 and it's bad

#

I forgot which was the driver before I install the new one but the new one here reduce around 10-20 fps when I test it with Where Winds Meet

#

I wonder if I need a DDU to install it

#

and somehow Minecraft fabric sodium without shader it used to reach 900fps or more near 1000

#

but this 581.80 destroys it

#

it only reach around 300fps under 400fps

I updated to the hotfix version yesterday btw

you probably need to fix that first. no gaming PC should run in single-channel

#

It's very hard to troubleshoot problems when the underlying system is just plain "slow" due to a misconfiguration

#

but as things are right now, 3DMark thinks that your computer is performing at the correct speed as is

#

but almost every game nowadays chokes on single channel

I do need 1 more ram bar

#

I guess I will buy that in the next new year eve

it is interesting that somehow your games felt slower than before the update though. If you still remember what older driver you are using, try installing that again after you perform a manual DDU, then get the numbers again

Tbh I've just been updating to every new driver cause Windows makes me anyway. No matter what methods I do to not make Windows automatically install new drivers, it just always does. I don't even have the Nvidia App installed and it still automatically updates drivers. And I feel like Nvidia drivers are so inconsistent that one driver will give amazing results compared to others.
