#will my 500watt psu support a 4060?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
EVGA 500 watt
that's still not enough information as it's missing the model name
Ok ill look at it
Where do i find it?
Ill send pic
The tier list for PSUs can be found here:
https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/
As a rule of thumb, you should buy a c tier when you build is below $1,000, B tier for below $2,000 and A tier above that. It may be worth checking the prices of some of the higher tiers as they may be cheaper than lower tiers.
You should not overbuy the wattage on the PSU, as PSUs are most efficient when at about 80% load.
Heres pic
All the parts cost 1000$ when they were brand new
So it wont support 4060?
Not just that, you really shouldn't have bought this power supply in the first place
Might as well as use this as an opportunity to fix it
Im comfused
If you're not sure, refer to #build-list build 3 for budget power supplies that are guaranteed safe. (you only need to check the power supply section)
The power supply is unsafe
Is it because its dirty?
We could easily kill this PSU since OCP (overcurrent protection) at 12V is not correctly set, but we aborted the test and let it live since we only have one sample to conduct all tests. The 5V rail was unable to deliver its advertised full power, while the 3.3V rail's OCP is sky-high, so ripple on this rail gets out of control. Finally, the Over Power Protection should be lower than 130%, given the platform's capabilities. The good thing is that there is OTP (over temperature protection), which is essential to any PSU.
No, manufacturing design fail
Cleaning it won't make it any safer
AND DO NOT OPEN POWER SUPPLIES
Huh thats odd i never had any problem with my psu
what's your previous video card?
how old is the entire system?
so likely already derated
What?
as a power supply ages the maximum wattage they can deliver safely and cleanly drops over time once they're past warranty
This particular line only has a 2 year warranty
so if this thing existed before the pandemic
that's at least 4 years old
Ok so my specs are 8700k 1660 TI 32gb ram 1tb ssd x 1
as this design's over current protection is not set correctly, and the 5v/3.3v rail are also not set up correctly
So i was lucky it didint fry all my pc parts?
Given that this system is still stable, a 4060 should still work correctly on the same system, but you really should replace the power supply as soon as you can
a little bit of this and a little bit of "at least it's not a gutless wonder"
still, this PSU is not designed correctly and needs to be replaced
You dont work for EVGA do you?
no
Say can i get some kind of compensation from evga?
I want a good PSU from amazon
650 should definetly support a 4060
This has s bunch of good ratings
Ill just get a 600 watt psu
you can get this psu ''adata xpg core reactor 850w''
its like 95-100$
actually nevermind
thats probably overkill, but if you want to get an overkill psu just incase of an upgrade its like 40-50 bucks more i think, then a 650watt tier c+ psu
but you should be fine with any 650 Watt tier C+ psu
Ill get 600
Im gonna be playing on a 1080p display so itll be good
4060 will be good for DLSS and frame generation
ok so i have an 8700k it wont be to big of a bottleneck will like i wont lose a bunch of FPS because of it right?
its overclocked so i hope that helps
It's game dependent
This CPU's single core speed is quite ropey
Most of the time this shouldn't be much of an issue, especially if you also utilise frame generation which bypasses CPU entirely
Since I do not know what games you will be playing, I cannot provide any specific advice other than to avoid higher ray tracing settings as the CPU likely will cause problems with 99ths
?
Slow
Like I said, it's game and settings dependent. That era of CPU is slow enough to have an impact in both 99th percentile frame times and sometimes outright frame rate when Ray Tracing is turned on, even when that GPU is a weakish 3050
Let alone any faster card
If your games are already running fine though there isn't a rush to get a new CPU
Shouldn't be a problem
@hollow kettle
Poorly designed in a way that can cause hardware damage if loaded up, and given its current age vs expected component life time, it's likely not even a 500W PSU anymore
Is it a software thing?
Hardware
So how come its lasted so long and still going?
Cause it didint die yet
If i put in a 4060 will it explode?
Your system shouldn't be able to max out its capacity in the first place
No, but that power supply needs to be replaced anyway since it's poorly made. Wouldn't want that "no" to become a "maybe" eventually
Ive never had any problems with it so far
Fair enough
Just avoid anything that uses more power than the 4060 Ti for now, and if you start getting unexpected shutdowns when things get loaded up time to get a second look on the PSU
It wont be a fire hazard will it?
No
As far as temps are concerned
However be aware that this PSU can't protect itself from overloading so avoid overclocking
Overcloacking the PSU?
The CPU. Overclocked CPUs can eat up much more power than rated.
You can't overclock a PSU
I dont know where your getting your information but ive been having my CPU overclocked since the day i first turned it on
Likely need to repaste my CPU gonna do that today
Might not be necessary but it wont hurt
Probably not going to be reading this thread to be honest but if you do, the suggestions here are based simply by that your PSU is part of a line that is not designed properly. It will still work if the new resulting maximum load is the same or lower as your current one, but it's still going to be a good idea to replace it soon.
