#Black screen when fullscreening games

examples:
been experiencing this ever since i got this pc (a couple months back) and i keep my drivers upto date
Is this a TV or a monitor connected via HDMI?
In NVIDIA Control Panel, there should be a section where you can specify the content type. If it's set to auto, change it to Desktop programs. This can reduce the amount of screen blackouts, but this will also cause the TV to not behave like a TV handling normal video content when you are actually playing video (which usually means any fancy post-processing done on the TV won't be available)
If it is not HDMI, or it persists:
Make sure that the desktop and game's display resolution and refresh rate are identical. If they are not, the game will need to change the display mode when it is active.
Also, for some games, fullscreen exclusive mode will cause a display mode change even if the set mode is identical to desktop. This isn't really fixable.
By the way, is there a reason why you are not using borderless? If you are on Windows 11, for the most part, they've made it to be pretty similar performance wise.
If you have checked "Disable Full Screen Optimization" on your apps maybe try uncheck
I had this issue a while ago, and managed to fix it by just doing fullscreen windowed
not a tv, a monitor connected via displayport
Make sure that the desktop and game's display resolution and refresh rate are identical
yeah they are
Also, for some games, fullscreen exclusive mode will cause a display mode change even if the set mode is identical to desktop
yeah im sure there are, but im seeing this on games that handled exclusive fullscreen perfectly fine on my previous machine(s)
By the way, is there a reason why you are not using borderless? If you are on Windows 11, for the most part, they've made it to be pretty similar performance wise.
honestly not really? i actually prefer windowed with a taskbar for a lot of games. it's moreso just that some games might launch in exclusive fullscreen, turning my entire screen black for a moment, then doing so again if i alt tab and again if i alt tab back in and again if i change display mode and- its just little things like that? its starting to get pretty tiring
well thats not a fix
imm not sure what option you're referring to
Well, setting borderless in affected games should mostly give it
i use borderless windowed wherever possible and whilst it has more or less the same outcome without this issue, that's besides the point here
like
my issue isnt that i have to use exclusive fullscreen, but rather the short bursts of exclusive fullscreen that you just inevitably get without giving a second thought, and the frustrates that come with it ^
i end up experiencing this with regular use like every 2 days or so, usually with multiple encounters in a row, and its just so annoying each time, its not something i should have to be dealing with
You did mention that this did not happen with your previous machine. Do you still have it's monitor, or the machine itself?
my previous machine being a laptop*
i mean i have it? but i dont think its really gonna be useful
I think you just found your answer
oh?
Blacking out when changing display modes due to fullscreen mode? Get used to it on a desktop
But to confirm, check if connecting your laptop to your current monitor exhibits the same behaviour
honestly i dont really wanna get out my laptop right now
but interesting
but how come so many other people don't experience this? like anyone with a pc i've asked doesn't have this issue
like
what could i be doing differently
is it a monitor thing potentially?
As an aside, see if you can reduce the amount of time black screen lasts if you change your GPU scaling mode in NVCP to use the GPU in override mode instead of the display
I'd think monitor, GPU scaling settings, game, and Windows version all have an influence
hm okay
wheree is this
It's actually pretty hard for me to verify this myself as my computer does not exhibit this behaviour at all
Open NVIDIA Control Panel
Look at the left side. (Screenshot for reference)
left sidee
Adjust desktop size and position
this?
restart as in restart my pc?
Now try starting a game that runs in fullscreen exclusive. What happens then?
Yeah
Also I noticed that you have a 4K display
should i check this
Um, yeah
yeah
okai
Otherwise the option doesn't really work
ah
BTW, pay attention to what your monitor OSD is reporting
Check once on the desktop, then again in the game
(You may want to temporarily turn off G-Sync)
okay switching to gpu scaling didnt change anything
my monitor what what
oh onscreen display, it reports the same resolution in both scenarios
Looks like you're going to need to use your laptop to confirm
😔
i'll get back to you on that then
could you let me know what i should be testing when i get the chance
thanks for helping out btw <3
Simply connect your laptop to the monitor using either the same or best cable connection you can give it
With the same or highest possible resolution and refresh rate if it is lower
Then launch a game in fullscreen
Compare it vs using just the laptop's own screen
@round stirrup sorry for the late response, completely forgot
but
i've just tried with my laptop, and it works fine with my laptop
sorry about the laptop fans ğŸ˜
the hdmi input here is the laptop, the displayport input is the pc
i also tried using hdmi on the pc to see if it made a difference, it didnt
laptop has an i7 10750h and a 2060
pc has an i9 13900kf and a 4060ti
Can you also show the contents of Change resolution and Adjust desktop colour settings here?
(Starting to think you may need to contact NVIDIA support tbh)
yeah sure
wuh oh
I wonder what happens if you reset the desktop colour settings
i actually tried resetting all these settings
(Second image, top right, restore defaults)
this is on default settings btw
Hmm. Let's see what happens when you use HDMI on the video card instead of DP, and set it to the same output res/hz as the laptop's
(Don't forget about the content type reporting, so check these two pages again)
as in the laptop's built in display's res/hz?
Look at the bottom of the second image. Change auto to desktop
oo ur right
The same as what you were using in this video
ah
that'd be 4k 120hz
nope, that didnt fix it
althoughh, when set to 120hz, im noticing like slight discoloration outside of fullscreen
idk what thats about
OK. Then just plug in the DP and probably contact NVIDIA support on this since this isn't normal behavious
i thought it was normal for your screen to go black when fullscreening something
😔 alright
It normally is tbh
So I kind of want to see why the laptop pretty much does it instantly
In my case it goes black from HDR
Maybe the entire thing goes nowhere anyway
